AVOID!!!!!! I would give 0 stars if I could!! UNSANITARY, NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I ordered a croissant and ice black coffee. SUPER EXPENSIVE!! They have nothing that is on their menu ready and also everything is stale! I saw the Asian lady flatten my croissant with bare hands without me asking. She just handled the money and did NOT wash them. When I told her politely I wanted a different piece she didn't touch, she realized I saw and tried to defend herself! She also seemed like I was wasting her merchandise. She then got mad, handled my order with attitude! They are located right next to the tourist office and where they get most of their customers. They do not know how to run a morning coffee business! RUDE, EXPENSIVE, GO to the STARBUCKS around the corner!! One word- DISGUSTING. read more

The lady behind the counter needs to stop pretending she is running a non-profit for prisoners. Not pleasant at all and she yells the order out like we're in a warehouse. It's half a closet this "charming" little, like very little...space. It's like someone decided to start a cafe in a stairwell lol. I feel for the guy who works with her. Hope they're not married or something. The 1 Star is for the food. It is, unfortunately? quite delicious. Not sure how much longer I will put up with the shitty lady. We'll see. read more

I don't write many reviews because they seem pointless--but I have to share this. I had a really rough day yesterday and decided on a smoothie to cheer myself up (I've been told I'm a pessimist so I'm trying to be more positive). But as soon as I decide what I want, I realized I left my wallet at home. At that point in the day I was so defeated I just apologized for wasting their time and turned around. But they gave me my smoothie for free and said they'd hoped they made my day even a tiny bit better but honestly it made my day. Not only was the smoothie delicious, the staff made my day :) I recommend it to anyone in need of a pick me up whether through a smoothie or some nice people. read more

Today I had to walk over to Sutter Street Cafe just to get a happy warm smiling welcome. I didn't even buy anything.... just went to say hi to the crew over there. I used to work in the building and they were great! They knew your name, your "usual" order and always took time to small talk even when the line was out the door. I am now much closer to Cafe Encore and I have to say the woman who works at this Cafe is sooooooo miserable looking and sounds miserable with her tone every time I've come here to buy something. She is not friendly AT ALL. They don't have printed to-go menus or a website. I wanted to take some photos of the menu but decided against it because I didn't want to risk getting some crazy evil eye from the lady. So basically I probably won't come here much... if ever. After a horrendous experience at neighboring LabCorp, I ducked into Cafe Encore to grab some quick breakfast. They have a pretty extensive menu of sandwiches, salads and tons of coffee drinks. Prices are pretty high, but since they're tucked away right in Union Square, them's the breaks. The cheerful guy behind the counter took my order for an everything bagel with egg, cheese and Black Forest ham. I figured I'd go whole hob since I needed something to build me back up after having my blood drawn. The sandwich was just what I needed. Big, toasty, hot and delicious. Next time I'll get one of the coffee drinks. Maybe a white Mocha? 3.5 stars. read more

I will give this place my business anytime! Conveniently a block from work, and 2 blocks from class. quaint and nice atmosphere right off of union square. This place has bagels, sandwiches, salads, pastries up the a^# and delicious teas and coffee. Odwalla is available as well but you could get it for like 75 cents cheaper down at what a grind. I prefer Naked over Odwalla anyways.. This place caters to the demo (tourist and student) which gets you a great price with amazing vendors (Alternative Baking Co., Daisy's Treats) and amazing small bites. Everything has a veggie option as well. The fresh OJ is off the chain as well. I'm a fan of their frequent coffee cards (but i replace it for my chai lattes!). Great place. Great people. Not much place to sit down so grab a coffee and a sami to go and enjoy it in union square! Perfect way to enjoy any meal :) read more

Talk about meh. Two lattes, two little fruit tarts, and a Nutella snack box (it's like the Italian version of Yan Yan) ran me about $25 before tip. I think the breakdown was $3.50 a latte, $6-$7 a little fruit tart, and $3-$4 for the Nutella snack box, and possibly tax. I was treating a guest, so I didn't want to get into it about prices there. I actually wouldn't have minded if the food and experience were good, but unfortunately, neither were. To make matters worse, it was dingy and service was horrible. I must've somehow missed the great baristas that others have Yelped about. The two kids behind the counter were way more into each other and their iPhones than helping customers (owner's kid and his girlfriend maybe?). There was nothing charming about this place. There are plenty of higher end cafes in the are that are comparable in price (some even less expensive) with better food and coffee and a better ambiance. I usually love discovering hole-in-the-wall places and always love supporting small local businesses over chains, but my experience here was just so not cool. read more

I remember this place being friendlier and a little cheaper-I used to have it exactly right for a large iced Chai until one day-it wasn't enough. I appreciate the fact it's small and the street traffic is almost non-existent. But the thing that gets me is the rudeness of the girls that work behind the counter. I think they have it out for their customers or something. I couldn't decide what I wanted on my bagel so I'm going back and forth in my head, literally tilting it from one side to the other and Queen of All That is Rude says, " Are you ready yet?" in an annoyed and harassed voice. My favorite cafe downtown!! The staff is super friendly, especially if you become a regular, plus they have good food for good prices--none of that $9 bagel crap you find in most places in Union Square. Some idiotic people have complained that you have to wait for your sandwich/panino/wrap/salad to be made...well no sh*t!! They're making it fresh people, it's not just another chain cafe where all of the food is ready-made and has been sitting in the window for 15 hours. If you want a low quality lunch in a hurry go to Starbucks--there are 4 within 5 blocks of here. If not, the panini are TOTALLY worth the wait, which generally isn't that long anyway. So, calm down, take a seat, and relax! That being said, they do have SOME food available ready to go if you are in a rush--fruit boxes, tarts, muffins, etc. All in all, great little cafe. The 4-stars are for the macarons only, since I did not try anything else. While in San Francisco last week, my girlfriend was fiending for macarons. We ended up getting them at 4 or 5 different places, but Cafe Encore had the best coffee-shop macrons we found. Nice crunchy shell, chewy center, and tasty filling. This is my go to place anytime I'm near Union Square. The baristas are super nice-- like, they go above and beyond the normal "hi how are you?" convos. They always remember what I like to order, check in with me about how my wedding planning is going, and are generally just very fun and lovely people to be around. They also happily prepare whatever weird order I may want-- aka my SUPER high protein, very low carb sandwich-- hello wedding dress! Shannon and Lydia always put a smile on my face. Chill tiny spot. Comfortable seating. They're generally very friendly. Relaxing music. Today, they gave me a bitter regular coffee. I try not to send things back, but I couldn't even drink it, so I ordered an almond milk latte. It was absolutely delicious. I could taste the crema, and the correct steaming brought out the sweetness and nuttiness in the almond milk (rarely done well other places). I've had a baked good and something else here in the past, also good. I think the coffee was an outlier. read more

Despite it's small, albeit cozy space, Cafe Encore has A1 service. Not only is it conveniently located near Union Sq., but the staff really create an incredibly friendly and welcoming atmosphere. They are conversational (especially the curly blonde Shannon) and just nice people all around every time I've stopped in. I'm may not be connoisseur of coffee, but the variety of choices of food and beverage available are fantastic, and everything I've had at Encore has pleased my palate and satiated my appetite. Quick, fresh, and friendly. This cafe will be my new frequent stop before I head to the airport. It's close to my apartment and close to Powell Bart station. They have macarons! They're quite tasty, but overpriced at $3 a pop. I've never even seen macarons cost that much in NYC. Anyway, everything else is reasonably priced. read more

I have class right across the street and this is my go to cafe when I'm in between breaks! They make great, fresh sandwiches here and the service is speedy, which is perfect when all you have is 15 minutes. I ordered a quiche here just a couple of times when I first started coming here and one week I just got another item, and the cashier jokingly asked "no quiche this time?" It was a thoughtful little note. I love how the servers are so lighthearted and friendly with their customers; it keeps me coming back! I ate a half sandwich of albacore tuna because I wasn't too hungry during my lunch break. But I didn't expect it to look like a third of wonder bread (it's supposed to be sourdough) with bland canned tuna and red pepper and olives. It was edible, but not appetizing. It lacked flavor and presentation. It was cute inside, it had some appealing-looking baked goods, but this sandwich makes me not want to go back. I saw the good ratings and thought I'd be delighted. I try to try new coffee shops that aren't chains (to help the small business out and to try something that's not Starbucks/La Boulange), so I came here the other day for "coffee" with a friend. I don't really drink coffee, so my go to drink is a soy chai tea latte. Their chai tea latte was from a box! (instead of steaming milk/soy milk and adding it to the tea mixture) and it tasted only of soy milk instead of chai mixed with soy. I was very disappointed :(. Maybe their other drinks/coffee is better, but for something like chai tea latte, I don't want to drink it out of a box (if I did, I could buy my own boxed drink and heat it up at home :\) read more

What I love most about the Cafe Encore is that among the fast paced, hustle and bustle of the Union Square district, there is a cafe that has the balls to maintain a "we are local" atmosphere. I understand those who are not frequent customers may get a little bummed over a perceived "line cutting" scenario, I just don't care. There's seven Starbucks within a block of Encore, so you can go there if you want a faceless customer service experience. As a resident of the downtown district, we are constantly surrounded by chains of cafes and other eateries. The fact that one cafe has the audacity to have a "for the local populace" atmosphere is just wonderful. Apart from that, the coffee is great and well priced and the barista's are all charming in their own right. And there is nothing more welcoming and wonderful than walking up to the counter and being greeted by name and already having your order placed. read more
