It was a cold day in LA my friend wanted to hang out in a nice place so we decided go to Cafe Gratitude. It was such a nice experience they have heaters outside and their food is just amazing. My friend is vegan but I'm not and I just loved the food. Our server Andro recommended me this vegan chilaquiles that was bomb, no dairy, no meat, who would have thought right?! It was just the right thing, my friend had this sandwich called great that comes with a side salad! I had this drink called Golden with homemade almond milk. The fries were completely soggy and oily and the mushroom sandwich was soft and soggy, not crispy like how it typically comes. If I'm going to spend $25 for lunch I expect it to be decent. Cafe Gratitude? More like Cafe Attitude. So this place is advertised in foreign guide books so I have to end up here a few times when people outside of the US comes here. Each time, they have the worst attitude for an overpriced food fare. I asked for one of the dishes to be for take out (for someone staying at home) and specifically told them to make it when we let them know again that we will likely get ready to leave. I always have no problem when it comes with any other restaurant with this request but I guess they didn't hear and they brought it out the same time. I let the server know what I said again and they just gave me a look and left begrudgingly without saying anything. Okay, whatever. Then when I was ready to leave, the food came out suspiciously quick. I looked at it and noticed it was cold and soggy. Pretty sure they reused refused food. This is definitely the last straw for me and definitely never coming back and definitely going to steer far away from this place. Venice has a lot of good places. Very healthy, very good food! 4 stars just because the food took so long to come out. I fully am happy that the cook to order but waiting 25 + minutes for food just seems a little over what I would want to wait. The food was great. I got the Mexican Mucha bowl: was super good and I've been trying to replicate it at home ever since then. We also got the burger and fries: was very filling and was even tasty to us even as consistent meat eaters. I have things that I really love about this place but I am sorry to say I am not a fan of the food. I went here three times in the last two weeks because it has been a great spot to get work done near the beach. There is always plenty of seating inside and I like their vibe. The staff is nice, they have free wifi and a nice bathroom. The first two times I went I got one of their smoothies (the one with the jalapeños but I got it without the jalapeños). I enjoyed the smoothie (Although I wouldn't say it was super special). This last time I went to eat and work. I got the Local and it was so without flavor I had to ask them if I could exchange it. To me that wouldn't be enough for two stars but a little later a table next to me got some drinks that looked so tasty but they did the exact same things as me and sent them back. When I asked them which one it was they said it was the adaptogen drink. I explained to them my situation with the salad I had ordered and they said that this restaurant didn't used to be like that. Everything on the menu used to be so good but at some point it changed and became hit or miss. I got the avocado toast instead and it was fine but nothing to write home about. However that's not why I gave a 2 star review. This location offers NO DINE IN at this time and it was not listed on their yelp or the website. They did not tell us this until after we had already ordered, paid, and the food was already being made. I went out for a dinner with my friend and we ended up having to eat in the car because there were no benches, tables or anything outside. It was cold, dark, and we weren't about to go find a random park to have a picnic that late. I just wish we were told they had no dine in before we paid + ordered. I understand why they had no dine in due to COVID, but I felt misled. If we had known, we would have gone somewhere else where we could have sat inside and enjoyed our dinner. Definitely very impressed with their bowls - tried the Whole/Macrobiotic Bowl (braised garnet yams, adzuki beans, sea vegetables, sautéed greens, kim chee, garlic tahini, toasted tamari almonds, brown rice or quinoa), and it was definitely very tasty. I like that it's flavorful without being overwhelming, and you just get enough of everything. I was missing most of the kim chee in my bowl but regardless still tasted yummy. Also had the chicken fried mushrooms which were great - they are like deep fried portabello mushrooms. The almond joy was delicious. The crispy quinoa bar was just OK - bit dry and I probably wouldn't get that one again. Although it's pricey (like any other vegan food), I felt it's well worth it and I definitely will be back to try some of the other dishes. read more

I had the burger, which I loved. After my stroke​ last year, fries are a treat I am only supposed to have now and then - and then they better be good. Sadly, these were not. They were soggy. Ok. I broke out of my comfort zone. Came here on Mother's Day because it's where my mom wanted to go. She's not vegan but has food restrictions and vegan food happens to coincide. I ordered the black bean burger thing with French fries and it was good. Well, when I ate it. Later I kept burping it up and it didn't agree with me, I wouldn't have it again but I think other people would like it. My dad got the burrito and liked that. The staff are very friendly and mellow despite it being a busy place. Our waitress was lovely and had endless patience with all of our questions. The only thing I didn't like was they asked a question "what's the most wonderful thing about your mom?" And when you have an already rocky relationship with your mom, that question can be a f***ing minefield!!!! Like thanks for putting me on the spot now!!! She's gonna judge my answer so hardcore!!! But man, they really stepped up their game at the Venice location! Nachos (3/5) : We started out with nachos for an appetizer! It was pretty delicious. We all wished it was bigger.. it looked like a one person serving rather than something to share! The flavors were delicious tho. If you ever don't want to feel guilty about finishing up a whole plate of food this is the best spot to do that at. They pride themselves in having a plant-based menu. Let me start off by saying I finished my whole plate, felt full but didn't feel like how I usually do after finishing a meal at other establishments. I even managed to have a little bit a room for dessert. My cousin's friend got us a reservation for dinner last night at a perfect time of 645. It wasn't too crowded when we got there. We actually ended up at the LA location by accident. Luckily, it didn't take that long to get to Venice since it was a Sunday night. There were four of us. We all got something different, but I only managed to take a photo of my food since they ate theirs like the savages that they are. Food: Mine was Lucky salad. The others got Fabulous, Original and Glorious. They all also got a bowl of the day's soup which I believe was squash. My cousin only ate half of hers and I would've finished the rest had I not already been so full. Can't speak for the other three, but my salad was so damn good. Drinks: My cousin and I both got Chic. That totally hit the spot and was perfect since it was hot af yesterday. Not sure what the other two got, but they each had a glass of red and white wine. Ended with sharing the Irresistible and Adoring. I can't say I prefer one over the other. They were equally good. I had such high expectations for Cafe Gratitude but it missed the mark. Maybe it was an off-night for them but given that it was around 7pm on a Saturday I would have expected their A game. I appreciated that they leave you with a question to discuss once you order: ours was what motivates you? Asked the waiter about the smoothies and she said they could only customize aspects of them since some had components that were premade. Explained I needed one without coconut so we went with the citrus one. It came out with little white coconut flakes on top & mixed in. That's just not acceptable, esp. for an expensive $11 smoothie. A different waiter stopped by to bring N's Mediterranean platter so we explained about my smoothie and he took it back to be replaced and made correctly though he looked annoyed at my request. Meanwhile, N's sparkling berry lemonade was good. Platter was not memorable and flavors were average. Our server returned and checked on us but didn't acknowledge her mistake. That's just not the kind of service I want when I am spending these prices. I don't mind paying more for food if it's organic, fresh, the restaurant has a good mission and atmosphere but I do expect the service to be attentive and correct. read more

I really don't like giving Cafe Gratitude a low score because they are consistently a really great establishment. The staff is great, the food is incredible and it's vegan!! But I have to complain about the recent changes in the plates/bowls that the food is served in. Today there were so many chips and cracks in the ceramic dish that I thought when I bit down I could feel something crunchy and that wasn't a good crunchy like food crunchy. They used to have really great bowls that they served their food in which was never chipped or cracked and most recently changed to this white textured ceramic bowl that when your spoon and fork scrapes across the bottom it makes a rough sound like nails on a chalkboard. The old bowls never had cracks or chips in them and they had a very smooth glazed finish. As soon as they change their bowls and plates they will get back their 5 stars!!! read more

My experience here was great from start to finish. The ambiance was clean yet cozy, service was fantastic, and the food was so fresh and flavorful. The star of the show was definitely the coconut "calamari"- I've been to many vegan restaurants and have never seen that before. It was delicious- the batter was perfectly crispy without being oily and I liked that it didn't particularly have a "fishy" taste. This might be my favorite restaurant in Venice! We went here a few times and every experience was satisfying, delicious and memorable. The forbidden black rice bowl (I am loving) and the burrito (with mushroom carnitas and guac) are my 2 favorites - full of flavor and nutritious ingredients. How precious is this place!? Everything about Cafe Gratitude screams happiness. The items on the menu are creatively named, which is good and bad. Good because it's quirky and super cute to order, but bad because I have no idea what a Humble Bowl looks like just by the name of it. We ordered: Mucho/Mexican Bowl (5/5): Literally tastes like Chipotle but healthier! Nuff said. Grateful/Community Bowl (4/5): Delicious mixture of a bunch of healthy stuff, like quinoa, brown rice, black beans, etc. I can't give this one 5 stars because I eventually got tired of eating it at the end. Liberated/ Pad Thai Kelp Noodles (6/5): My favorite dish out of the three! I typically already enjoy kelp noodles a lot, but this one was pad thai - like! The green curry sauce was delicious, and I love that there was kale mixed with the noodles. It gave each bite an extra layer of texture. Would highly recommend this dish! All the bowls here are extremely filling. I would definitely recommend sharing your meal family-style with friends. Service is super duper friendly and nice. I've been holding off on this place for 4 years because I thought it was going to be an overrated LA hype, but Cafe Gratitude deserves its iconic renown. ....and with that I have completed the Yelp 100 Challenge!!!! Celiac review -- switched a dish to gluten free bread, wrote "GLUTEN FREE -- ALLERGY!!" In the comments. Tongue starts to tingle after I have eaten it. Nooo. Ask if it's toasted on the same toaster, server says "yes, so there's definitely cross contamination. I saw your note that you have an allergy." AFTER MY FOOD IS GONE. WTF. Start feeling woozy.
