Mother's Day celebration is a perfect occasion to come back to Cafe Hiro. The Omakase is the best option when we are all together. For the omakase we get a choice of three appetizers, two pasta dishes, chefs choice entree, chefs choice risotto, and a choice of dessert for each person. Doesn't sound like a lot, but it's truly enough and you get a variety of choices. This visit we went with beef tataki, salmon burrata, deep fried oysters, shrimp tempura salad, eggplant and mushrooms pasta, Uni pasta, scallops risotto, and the prime steak. Each dish is an 8/10 or better. I would gate keep this place if I could, but many who don't know that good Japanese Cuisine is not just limited to sushi. The scallop risotto at Cafe Hiro is one of those dishes you keep thinking about long after the last bite. The scallops were perfectly seared...tender, buttery, and just the right amount of caramelized on the outside paired with a creamy risotto that was rich without feeling heavy. Every bite felt balanced and intentional, with flavors that complemented each other instead of competing. I have not had risotto like this elsewhere. That's why I keep coming back. Service is very good which I like. The ambiance feels like a cozy cafe. And the watermelon margarita? Easily one of the most refreshing drinks I've had in a while. Light, slightly sweet, and incredibly crisp it had that perfect fresh watermelon taste without being overly sugary. It paired so well with the richness of the risotto and made the whole meal feel elevated yet effortless. Overall, such a standout combo comforting, refreshing, and definitely worth going back for.
Just came here for dinner with the fam. Cute restaurant with friendly staff. Wasn't busy but of course it was a weekday! Me and family ordered family style so we got to try a few dishes. My sister in-law ordered beef tongue stew and I have to say that the meat was VERY tender! Everything was tasty. Some of the main entrees come with salad which is a plus. I got the karaage curry in mild but definitely could've done more spice. The only thing missing was the ground red spices! But I would definitely try this place again.
Yoooooooooooooooooooooo! I've been coming here maybe 4-5 times a year--not super often, but enough to know how good it usually is. Unfortunately, my last two visits have been pretty mediocre compared to how I remember it. One thing I noticed was that the Japanese chef who's usually in the kitchen wasn't there. The staff mentioned he was on vacation, so maybe that explains why the food didn't hit the same. Service was also really slow. I did see a "help wanted" sign outside, so I get that they might be understaffed--but it still took about 30 minutes just to place our order, and another 35 minutes for the food to come out. We started with the calamari, but it came out without marinara or tartar sauce. When I asked, the server said he had to check if they even had any--which was kind of surprising. They did end up having it, but only after I asked. I ordered my usual--kurobuta pork cutlet with curry--which is normally cooked perfectly, but this time it was overcooked and not tender like it usually is. My mom and sister got the seafood uni pasta, and they also said it didn't taste the same as before. I'm hoping this was just an off couple of visits. I'll probably come back when the main chef is back and give it another shot.
I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone I know. Worst bowl of spaghetti I have EVER had in my life. I ordered takeaway for mentaiko spaghetti. The woman inside made me wait outside for more than 30 minutes and couldn't have been ruder and more aggressive about it. The actual spaghetti itself wasn't worth the wait, the hostile and racist attitude to put up with, or the $30 price tag. My college dining hall had better tasting over-boiled spaghetti than that. The Mentaiko spaghetti was extremely overboiled and had the wrong flavors. It was soggy, sweet, bland, and downright DISGUSTING. It was coated in sweet milk like sauce and had a bitter aftertaste to it. The noodles had no salt and it was truly the most disgusting thing I have eaten in a very long time. The lack of customer service made the whole experience all that more vile. I highly recommend no one to get any sort of food from there. How someone can charge so much money for so little food with such foul quality is mind boggling to me. I have no idea how this place even stays in business. There are so many restaurants in the vicinity with far better quality of service and food. I suggest going to Unico Tokyo Pasta, Pasta e Allegro, Akane Chaya, just to name a few. Seriously. Anywhere but Cafe Hiro.
Had a lovely four course meal on Valentine's Day. I really liked the ambiance in here, it gives a homely hole in the wall vibe compared to Ini (which has similar food). Uni Pasta was amazing as was their bread pudding. However I was not a fan of the service. I made a reservation and asked to be sit in one of the EMPTY tables available for guests. Whoever the waitress with the blonde balayage was completely gave me attitude and coldly told me that we were getting the booth. I didn't know that a customer making a request was grounds for irritation. If you wonder why you didn't get a tip, there's your answer.
It's been over a decade since I discovered Cafe Hiro and they are as popular as ever. I highly recommend making a reservation as there are scarce availability for walk-ins. I came with my boyfriend at opening time and they definitely asked if we had a reservation. During our time there, we saw each table fill up slowly. I noticed some enhancements since my last visit like the cushions on the seats Nice touch. They had a menu for 2 but we weren't hungry enough for that amount of food, so we decided to order by the dish. My boyfriend had the Seafood Pasta ($28) and I had the Sea Urchin "Uni" Pasta ($28). My uni pasta was as delicious as I remembered it. It was well coated and you can see clumps of uni in the pasta. My boyfriend's seafood pasta had a generous amount of seafood. There was shrimp, scallop, calamari, mussels, clams, and mushrooms. Nice and chunky. The seafood felt like a large portion since the protein it comes with were more hearty whereas the uni pasta is a light coating, but it is sufficient for my appetite. Looking forward to coming back to try more of their menu. Maybe we need to recruit some friends because they have an omakase that requires 4 people due to the large portion size. I really want to try their risotto.
This is my favorite Japanese Italian spot! You honestly can't go wrong with any dish that they have to offer. I've tried such a variety - Peking pork, mushroom salad, uni pasta, osso bucco, hamburg curry, risotto, panna cotta, and croissant bread pudding. Each dish was so good. If I had to choose some favorites to recommend, it would be the uni pasta, risotto and croissant bread pudding. Service is always good. All the servers are super nice and interior really gives off cute & homey vibes. Perfect spot for a date or catching up with friends.
I really enjoyed the food at this interesting little Japanese/italian fusion restaurant. We arrived without a reservation, but they found a table for us at one of the tables that's in the hallway. It is not at all like a Japanese restaurant, but more like an Italian themed room. There are clouds and Vines painted on the ceiling and a few pieces of art. It is very cozy and intimate. There is a framed copy of the article about this restaurant from the Los Angeles Times. I'm not going to lie, though--where we were sitting I could see that the base of the wall near the could use a really good cleaning. I tried not to let it bother me, but it kind of did. I kept reminding myself of the "pass" health department certificate posted in the window. No worry, though, because the food more than made up for it. There is a Zagat sticker in the window from a past year. Our server was really good and very sweet. She came to check on us often, which is always a good thing. We weren't terribly hungry, so we ordered light. We ordered: *Beef Tataki *Ahi Tartar *Karaage Curry *Chicken Salad The food was delicious, especially the Tataki. Yummmmm!! The portions were generous, too. This place could definitely be on repeat for us. It does look like it's very popular, as reservations are recommended and the place was full when we left. Honestly, it would easily have been 5 stars for me if the walls down by the floors had a good scrub.
Came here with a reservation. Pretty tiny restaurant but the food here tastes so delicious and unique! It's not often that you find an Asian fusion place that does it right. My favorite was the seared tuna dish. The sauce is very umami and light. Highly recommend. And it also comes with rice !! The chicken katsu was also perfectly crispy and juicy inside and the curry had a nice sweet kick at the end, I think from apples in the sauce possibly? I'd say I'd try other options than the seafood spaghetti tho. The flavors were a bit straightforward and it tasted like seafood + tomato with not much else. They give a lot of protein with that though which was nice! I'd love to come back again and try more of their menu. It's a lovely restaurant and everyone here is super nice.
Very prompt and attentive service. No wait at noon on a Saturday. Fair prices. Decent option for dates. Inside is very cozy. You can make reservations but I wouldn't come with a huge group, maybe 6 max. Food flavors overall are very light and subtle. You get full, but no food coma. Scallop carpaccio (4.5/5): fresh and has a very slight kick from the curry oil. Overall quite subtle but tasty. Chicken and mushroom curry (3/5): decent, creamy, but wish it was a little more flavorful. The rice was not impressive and was more on the wet/mushy side. Seared sesame seed crusted ahi tuna (3/5): Large portions but the tuna was cooked quite a bit more than a sear. End up being like a looser pork texture. Comes with rice on the side. Wish it was more flavorful, but the bok choy is much more salted, and combined with the sweet snd savory sauce, it offsets the lack of flavor in the tuna. They seem to give kids their own sectioned kids plate, which is nice.
My favorite thing to order here is the shiso ume pasta with seafood mix. The uni pasta is also really good. The salmon with veggies is a lighter entree and come with a small bowl of rice so it's good if you aren't very hungry. The salmon with risotto is on the heavier side cause of the risotto. We like to dine in here once in a while cause they take reservations. It's on the smaller side and quaint but I like the vibe. Service has been good but also slow when they're super busy. I like the sauce with the complimentary crudités they serve in the beginning.
Cafe Hiro is a textbook hole-in-the-wall. You wouldn't think much of the unassuming restaurant at first glance, but the inside is decorated with just the right amount of whimsy and charm that makes you question if you're really still in Cypress. The ceiling is painted to look like the sky, and the walls create the ambiance of an outdoor bistro on a Parisian street. There's even a moody little alleyway strung up with fairy lights and warm lighting where you can sit. Service was great. The workers are very kind and professional. The menu consists mostly Japanese style western food - Hamburg steak, pasta, and the like. Their signature dish is the uni pasta. As someone who isn't the biggest uni fan, it's delicious. The uni flavor is strongly present without the typical uni texture, blending beautifully in the sauce. The rich, creamy sauce is lit up delightfully by wasabi, surprisingly lacking the harshness you would expect from typical wasabi. The pasta was cooked perfectly as well. The Hamburg steak and risotto dishes are also decent choices. The appetizers are also definitely worth getting. I recommend the Peking pork bao buns and the fried chicken. The cook was perfect and the flavors are delicious. The standout dish for me, however, was the bread pudding with bitter caramel sauce. It was genuinely the perfect dessert. The bitter caramel sauce complemented the soft bread pudding. It was not too sweet and the burnt butter taste from the caramel added a depth to the dish. I highly recommend Cafe Hiro.

Craving Japanese Italian fusion but don't want to pay for crazy high prices or still feel starving after your meal? I highly recommend you make a trip to Cafe Hiro soon. They've been open for as long as I could remember and I'd always hear great praises from my friends. I've been here a couple times pre-Covid era and just recently went back. I'm so happy to say that the quality and taste has not changed. It is a small place so I would highly recommend making reservations on Yelp in advance to ensure that you will be served that day. They also close pretty early by 8:30pm so that is something to also keep in mind. Nonetheless, every friend that I've taken to Cafe Hiro has nothing but great things to say. || L O C A T I O N / P A R K I N G || -Cross Streets are Valley View St. and W. Cerritos Ave. -Located in the same plaza as Sweetee Thai, California Fish Grill, Ozen Sushi, Chili's and more. -Ample amount of parking || F O O D || I highly recommend going for their Omakase menu ($45/person) if you're feeling hungry and generous. You do get a lot of food for the price you're paying, rather than paying individually. My friend and I opted for this option and thought that we'd be receiving our dishes in smaller portions, but surprisingly, the portion sizes we received was what you would normally get when ordering the dishes individually. What we ordered: Beijing Pork Buns - Similar to Peking Duck except they use pork instead of duck. I appreciated how tender the pork was. I would get this again. Chinese Chicken Salad - Great portion with generous amounts of chicken. I enjoyed the toasted almonds and fried wontons with each bite. Osso Bucco - The beef rib was super tender and fell apart very easily. The demi glace sauce was the cherry on top. Goes great with white rice. Uni Pasta - The star of the show! Super creamy and delicious. If you're unsure what to get, you can't go wrong with the Uni Pasta. Walnut Creme Brulee - I thought this was interesting as I never had a nutty flavored creme brulee before. Panna Cotta - My favorite dessert out of the two. So, with a visit to Japan coming up soon, I've found myself craving Japanese. Cafe Hiro is a Japanese fusion, but it's all good with me. Doesn't open until 5:30 and there isn't a bar to sit at and have a few cocktails before it's ok to order. No real waiting area either. Hang out in your car or find some empty outdoor tables over next to the shuttered sushi spot. That said - or wait in your car. In the plaza's parking lot. Signs read that it's one hour. I don't know how strictly its enforce. Ask. But know it's free. That's always a good thing The service was wonderful. If it matters, the servers both were wearing face masks. it's a small space and it wasn't busy so both servers helped with service. Been here a few times and I've not seen it busy to the point that service was impacted. As for the food, see pics. I enjoyed the food enough that I came during the pandemic when it was take out only. And I came back again just this past week. I enjoy the fusion and this last visit, the cocktails. And you can count on me being back for more on both counts. Quaint décor. Hawaiian music playing. Cute Italian-Japanese fusion cafe restaurant I've bookmarked for awhile now & wanted to try! The two of us ordered 3 main dishes, which explains the 3 full salads that came with! I enjoyed the subtle mustardy dressing, as it balanced out all the buttery dishes we ordered :) Per our wonderful server's recommendation, we decided to try: Ume shiso pasta (5/5) - dare u to try! :) Seafood & uni risotto (3/5) Osso Bucco (3/5) Starter Salad & Ume shiso pasta were my top two faves! Though the meat & sauce were both melt-in-your mouth tender, the Osso Bucco was just too buttery flavor-wise & texture-wise, with nothing else to contrast in the dish. I was craving for pickles/kimchi/sauerkraut to cut through the grease. There was white rice to accompany the osso bucco, but we had risotto so didn't end up eating the rice. The risotto also was extremely creamy & rich, so couldn't finish it unfortunately. Seafood & uni came in generous portions & were very fresh! The ume shiso pasta was the absolute highlight dish, bc it was a new flavor combo I'd never tried before and it was light, tangy, savory. Definitely something I'd aspire to recreate one day :) Overall, my experience could've been a 4 instead of a 5 because of the combination of dishes we got. We ordered 3 heavy dishes, so next time around, I'll try ordering more of a variety. read more
This is going to be a long one i fear .. So many words and thoughts to say about this place and they're all so positive. This is generally a pretty small space (getting a reservation helps) but walking in I already loved the mural on the side and the decor and overall vibe. Its so cozy and cute and it already gave great aura. For starters we got the Calamari and Mushroom Salad- both were SOOO GOOD! I am also biased because I love mushrooms but I thought the citrusy sauce with the 5 different types of mushrooms was a great combination. The calamari was also fried to perfection too, as it wasn't too soggy or too fried and it was that good in between, and the parmesan on top was different but I actually liked it a lot! For entrees we shared the fried scallop risotto, hamburg, uni pasta, and mushroom/ eggplant pasta. I will say the risotto and uni pasta were my favorites, the mushroom base of the risotto was so flavorful but not overwhelming, and the uni pasta was mixed in so well. I think usually uni pasta at other places you'd have to mix in the uni pieces but this one was already mixed in, which I prefer as it was evenly spread but the time we tried it. I thought the mushroom and eggplant pasta was lacking some saltiness but I know they're not known for their vegetarian dishes! The hamburg was great as well, it was a nice texture and not too juicy or dry and a little sweet. For dessert we got the Panna cotta and that was nice and light. I feel like it's hard to mess that desert up! Overall the service was sweet and everyone was so nice. Great place for a birthday dinner or a nice fancy date night! read more

VERY GOOD. I would arrive hungry! I've grown up my whole life in Cypress and have tried many restaurants. Now that the Thai Place is gone this has taken the #1 spot. They greeted us friendlily right when we walked in. The environment was relaxing. Calm Hawaiian music was played. The decorations were unique and heartwarming. I wanked in sad. I left happy and full. Came to Cafe Hiro for an early dinner! Cute, yet confusing artwork spanned its walls. The themes of the decor did not seem to mesh well together. The small space created an intimate setting as seats were close together. Staff were sweet. Food came out slowly. As for their Italian-French-Japanese fare, presentation was nice, but flavor was underwhelming. Here's what we tried: Uni pasta: Creamy, but underseasoned. Could not taste the lovely brininess of sea urchin. Seared scallops risotto: Creamy and rich, but heavy and tiring. Would be more well balanced with an acidic component, yet the cistrusy yuzu was faint. The scallops were plump and tender! I recommend making reservations to dodge the long lines! read more

The cafe is really cute. Very warm and festive decor with hand painted wall murals of random images. Service was sufficient but lacked any attention to guests. The food was mediocre and our party felt all dishes lacked any bold flavors or authenticity from any cuisine. Our favorite was only the house salad that came with our meal. Our least favorite was the curry. The curry sauce reminded me of bbq sauce or a grindy tomato blend. It did not taste like curry and did not go well with the rice. Having tried Cafe Hiro before, I had to come back for a visit. It's recommended that you make reservations for the weekends since it can get pretty crowded and the restaurant is small. Japanese-Italian fusion might not be everyone's cup of tea but Cafe Hiro did it right. The uni pasta was creamy, balanced, rich, and savory. It hit the right spot and filled me up nicely. Portions aren't too big and prices are a bit high but the nature of the dish means you'll leave satisfied. Service was okay but the ambiance was nice. read more

Loved this place! Came for the first time for a birthday and the whole family was happy with this place. We were a party of 5 and the restaurant was full but they were able to squeeze us in a table for 4, but we were very comfortable. We got the omakase for $45 per person which was a great deal and I'd highly recommend for anyone in the future. Here's what we got and ratings for each: Calamari Frit : 3/5 (nothing special) Ahi Tuna Tartare: 3/5 (good, also not super special) Peking Pork: 5/5 (surprisingly one of the best, most flavorful and most tender pork bellys I've ever had) Asian Beef BBQ Salad: 3/5 (nothing special) NY Steak Entree: 4/5 (tasty) Seared Scallop Risotto: 5/5 (so rich and delicious, perfectly seasoned risotto topped with perfectly seared scallops) Mentaiko Pasta: 4.5/5 (delicious in every way, just a touch more salt would be good but still delicious otherwise) Uni Pasta: 5/5 (nothing else to say but hands down delicious) Mango Sorbet: 5/5 (yum, special) Bread Pudding: 5/5 (yum yum, special) Chocolate Creme: 3/5 (good, but other desserts better) Berry Parfait: 4/5 (yum) Creme Brulee: 4/5 (yum but standard) For everything we got, and some of the star highlights, I'd HIGHLY recommend coming here for $45pp omakase (min. party of 4 needed). read more
This little whole in the wall place definitely surprised me. I was recommended by a friend. We made day of reservations for a total of 8 people and they were very accommodating. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so I would suggest making reservations especially during rush hour. Appetizers: - Fried Chicken: 4/5 - Fries: 3/5 - Beef Tataki: 4/5 - Ahi Tuna Tartare: 2/5 This dish didn't taste as fresh, and I felt lacked in flavor. - Calamari: 3/5 This dish was a bit bland and had no accompaning dipping sauces. Entrees: - Sauteed Shrimp Risotto: Such a mouthful of flavors. The shrimps were jumbo and cooked perfectly. The risotto had great texture, and you really tasted the cream of mushroom. 5/5 - Uni Pasta: Creamy, and just the right amount of umami. Date night and celebrating my achievement of becoming a notary so my bf and I decided we rather come here instead of some fancy place. We both have been here before so we knew we'd be happy with the food. I made reservations the day before and thankfully I did because this little restaurant gets packed! The restaurant is located in the same plaza as California Fish Grill and Sweetie Thai. Huge parking but the restaurant itself is intimate and charming. (Small). As we arrived right when they open for dinner 5:30pm, we got seated right away but our waitress took a little long to take our orders; it seemed they only had 2 waitresses so we were patiently waiting. My advice don't chance it with walk-ins you should just call to make your reservation!!! Food came out 15 minutes after and we were hungry and happy. BF ordered the spicy chicken mushroom pasta $21 and I got the miso marinated salmon risotto $31. I also ordered the cucumber Waterman margarita $10 which was deliciously light. Pasta was good but my bf said it was not as flavorful like my risotto. Overall, this place always serves you good food can't complain everything on the menu is great. Definitely choose the risotto when you come in. It also comes with a dinner salad. Anyway I would recommend this place and making a reservation. My friends and I are always on the hunt for delicious Japanese-Italian fusion restaurants and we were pleasantly surprised when we stumbled upon this spot. We were originally planning on going to Pasta E Pasta, but it was closed the day we decided to go. Cafe Hiro had a similar concept so we decided to give this place a try. We came on a week night so we were able to get seated right away. The servers were really nice and attentive. The interior of the restaurant was really cool - they painted the walls and ceilings to make it feel like you're actually eating in Italy. There were so many small details from the lights to the pictures hanging on the wall that made the restaurant feel so homey while you're eating. I ordered the seafood and uni risotto, which was really rich and creamy. A bit on the heavy side, but delicious. The risotto seemed to have lots of Parmesan in it which made it a touch too salty for me. I asked for some chili flakes on the side to cut some of the saltiness and it helped a lot. We also ordered the beef tataki as an appetizer. The beef was perfectly cooked and the ponzu sauce paired well with it. There were a lot of interesting appetizers here and I'll definitely come by to try some more. This would be a great restaurant to go to for a dinner with friends or for a date night! What everyone has been saying about uni pasta is no exaggeration. In fact, that's the only reason I braved the cold and come out for something tasty. True to form, the sauce is so smooth and just enough creamy texture to linger after the first bite that makes you take another and another bite to make sure it's THAT delicious (4/5.) I was kinda sad that I finished my meal in less than 10 min. This I would order again On the hand, I would skip the seafood pasta (3/5) without any remorse. Sadly, the seafood pasta was flat and underwhelming--skip this on next visit. Service was prompt and attentive. Love the cosy restaurant that is typical of Japanese restaurants where the noise level is modest so that we can still have a nice conversation without raising our voices. Came here on a Friday this place gets busy I suggest making a reservation or arriving early. Well worth the wait this food was really good. Other than the pork cutlet curry, fried chicken and hamburger steak with scallop potatoes I have in pictures, I also got the beef tataki, seafood pasta and bread pudding desert and everything was amazing. Wow....I expected this place to be good from the pics and it was..if not better. I ordered something that was on their special wall menu: hamburger and menchi katsu combo with ponzu sauce and it was really good and filling. The prices are kind of high, but I think that's true with most places now. I will definitely come back here. read more
I don't usually like to write reviews on places I've only been once, but that one time I went, the food was so memorable I have to share! First good sign was, when I went there was a slight wait. Go where the crowd goes! We were given a phone call when our table was ready, which I appreciate, because I like to browse/walk around usual if I need to wait. The second good sign was that their main menu was relatively small. You know they really have the opportunity to refine their dishes. So, this is a Japanese, Italian fusion type of situation. Mainly pastas and risotto. When we were ordering the uni pasta, the waitress thoughtfully asked us if would like the Wasabi to be put to the side. Why? Because she noticed I had a toddler with me. Love it! And when it came, I was surprised to find out that the Wasabi they used was REAL Wasabi. Did you know most places just give you horseradish that's dyed green? But here they give you the real stuff - it's a root vegetable, similar to how ginger grows. And to be honest, I really thought the Wasabi made a huge difference. The uni pasta was so good as is, but the when the Wasabi got mixed in, it became great. Next we got the carbonara, which honestly was ordered to cater to the picky palette of my 3 year old, but parents get to taste it still! And it was also delicious. Tons if panchetta. The third dish we ordered was the risotto, which was our "try something different" dish, and we loved it. The miso salmon was perfectly charred and full of flavor and the risotto was creamy but not too heavy. First off, the workers here were soo kind/helpful during our experience! Came here with a reservation for a large party on a Friday night for a loved one's birthday dinner and the staff were extremely accommodating and the food was delicious. Our entire group did the omakase deal, which was definitely filling (three appetizers, salad, two pastas, steak & risotto all shared by your table of 3 or 4 + individual dessert -- our table of 3 was basically full by the time we finished the pasta). My absolute favorite was the risotto which was so flavorful and rich, followed by the bread pudding for dessert and the carbonara. Super cute restaurant and loved the cozy feel of the place! The main reason we came to this place was to try their risotto, and their Scallop Risotto did not disappoint! Scallops were nicely seared and risotto had the perfect texture. We also got the calamari, which was decent but tasted like something you can get anywhere else. The braised beef tongue was also pretty decent as well, as it was superrrr tender, but tasted pretty bland for my taste considering it was covered with sauce. Ended the meal with their bread pudding which was super tasty, but did get a little overwhelming with the sweetness from the caramel sauce. read more
This restaurant came up when I was looking for some seafood places to have a meal. I decided to stop in and try them. Glad I did. It's not a large restaurant but it was nicely laid out. The service was very good and the staff are friendly. I ordered a seared Ahi dish which also came with a nice arugula salad (wasabi dressing?). Delicious! I've had Cafe Hiro saved in my bookmarks for a few months now, what instantly drew me was the beautiful plating and interesting fusion dishes. I had the chance to try it for the first time with my family and we were all impressed. Our starters were the Calamari, and the Beef Tataki. The calamari was light and although there wasn't a sauce accompanied with it, the flavor was good. The tataki came with daikon radishes, scallions, and a ponzu sauce. All three tasted well with the beef and I enjoyed the beef more than the calamari, but both were great. We also ordered the Uni Pasta and Seared Ahi Tuna. The uni pasta was creamy and not too spicy. The ahi tuna was delicious and soft. The service was very attentive and seating is very intimate and packed, try getting a reservation as it filled up quickly right after opening. Overall, Cafe Hiro is Japanese and Italian fusion done right, I would definitely return if I'm in the area. read more
I stopped by here with my fiancé on a Wednesday night for dinner, and there was plenty of seating. I found the ambiance to be very charming, as it had a quaint, old school yet romantic vibe. We ordered the tuna tartare, fire fries, calamari, and kurobuta pork katsu to share. The tuna tartare was presented beautifully, but I found the tuna was a bit too salty for my liking. I would have also liked the bits of tuna to be thicker instead of minced. You can't go wrong with fries! They were crispy, thick cut, and subtly seasoned. The calamari was very good. The squid meat was thick and juicy, and the batter was light and crispy. I also loved the Parmesan and parsley seasoning it came with. I only wish it came with a side of sauce. I think a blend of kewpie mayo, miso, and sriracha would have paired really well with it. As for the pork katsu, the dish overall was great and I loved the potato gratin and pasta salad that came with it! The kurobuta pork was just not as marbled as I expected and it had some burnt edges. The service here was excellent and we really enjoyed our meal here. I would come back, possibly to try some of their pasta dishes, but definitely to enjoy some drinks and appetizers. read more

Place was pretty busy. Waited 30 minutes. But food was absolutely disappointing. Not many nor much ingredients in dishes we ordered. Ume shisho pasta: sour taste. Interesting dish. I've had Cafe Hiro bookmarked for several years now and am so happy to have been able to try it!! Came on a Friday night at 7:30pm. We called ahead and they were able to accommodate us at the counter without an advanced reservation. The menu all looks so amazing but we narrowed it down to the scallop risotto and Japanese eggplant soy garlic spaghetti. Our meal came with a complimentary salad as well! The scallop risotto was AMAZING. super flavorful and creamy mushroom risotto, with generous portions of perfectly seared scallops! The Japanese eggplant spaghetti was also yum, I love eggplant and bonito flakes, but it was a bit more on the noodle side for me than pasta. We also tried the croissant bread pudding with bitter caramel sauce which was super delicious as well!! Service is super friendly and efficiently run. Vibes are so great, really reminded me of eating in Japan! It was a busy night so our food did take a while to come out, but our seats had a view of the kitchen so it was great to watch Chef Hiro cook while we waited! Went here as last minute dinner for New Year's Eve and was definitely happy! We ordered calamari, uni pasta and scallop risotto. Food came out quickly and we were pleasantly surprised. I had been craving an uni pasta for the longest time and Cafe Hiro seemed really promising, so I made a reservation on Friday night. Despite its higher prices and cuisine type, Cafe Hiro is surprisingly casual. The ambiance is pretty loud and they fit a lot of tables into the small space. It's not the best place for an intimate kind of dinner. The casualness of the restaurant is also evident in its uncoordinated assortment of utensils and plates. Yes, it's a bit kitsch. All to say I found the food a bit average. The Peking Pork was a decent starter. The Uni Pasta, like some other reviewers experienced, was regrettably on the watery end. The Beef Short was tender but devoid of flavor. Portions were pretty small too. Overall, I can see this being a nice place for locals but not sure I'd recommend making a trip for this. read more

They don't really have any gluten-free options. It uses Japanese condiments that has gluten.

They have salads but the portions and pricing makes it not worth it. They are not accommodating with any requests whatsoever.
