The food is decent, but just misses the mark every time. They almost have it right, but for the price I expect it to be ON the MARK. The service is weird - I've either felt harassed to order & BEGGED to come back OR I've felt like a total reject for asking that my bagel is open faced with onions added. This morning the cheese on my bagel had a cat hair or a PUBE (I hope the former), either way totally gross. After all of the attitude today for asking that my bagel is open faced + onions & the bonus hair added to the cheese, I will never be back. It really is a shame because I work in the area, love to patronize restaurants who use local and sustainable ingredients, and the mom & pop establishments. Everything here is great, from breakfast to lunch, all organic food. If you order the meal there is always a salad with fruit, very healthy. Great place for everyday meal. The service may be a little bit slow during meal time, but other than that it's great. read more

I enjoyed every bite of everything! * They both cost around $7.50 before tax, with a small side of tossed greens. Not cheap, but not bad at all for truly organic ingredients? * Great scone (I think raspberry. Not too buttery or dry. Chocolate chip cookie was okay. Nothing too special. * They separate compost, trash, and recycle. Got a large clean glass for filtered water. Awesome :) ! I'd definitely go back, esp. on a nice sunny day. This is a very casual cafe with no attractive interior decorations, but there's plenty of seating (not sure at peak times) and Presidio is just so beautiful. Wish I worked in the area. I work nearby and I love this place. The people working there are honest/nice people. I pretty much had everything on their menu. Most of the sandwiches are pretty good. The tuna melt is exceptional. The Nicoise Salad and the quesadilla are very good, but I'll tell you a little secret. Their specials are out of this world. Look for them before 1am and they're worth every penny. On a good day, I take their daily special over any offering from any restaurant on Chestnut! It's that good! Btw, some poor sap mentioned that Starbucks might provide some competition w/ Acre. That's like comparing Old Navy to G-Star. I work right in the same building as Starbucks and I take the extra 5 minutes to walk to Acre because they make very extremely good coffee and latte. This is easily one of the best-kept secrets in The Presidio. The food is always healthy, organic and with lots of options for those who are either meat- or gluten-free. Feels like home, but looks gourmet. Not only that, but the food is delicious served with energy, passion and compassion. Rogelio, the proprietor is a creative and full of awesome. Super delicious, very fresh, great portions. A bit expensive. $10-11/day for lunch means it's not going to be my everyday stop for lunch at work. I'm perplexed by other reviews. Pachoulli? The ambience of a convalescent home?? I don't think we're talking about the same place. This building WAS an Army hospital. They've done a great job with what they had to work with. They have wireless access and continuously running art shows. Secondly, the smart (and obvious) thing to do when you go there is to sit outside in the sunshine on one of the many picnic benches. I will preface this by saying that I think our experience was probably an unusual one. When my friend and I visited, the power had just gone out. The room was so filled with sunlight that we didn't realize this, so we made our food decisions and THEN they told us we cold only get soup or salad - things that wouldn't need to be cooked. I picked a lentil veggie soup and my friend got a Caesar salad. We both were in the mood for quesadillas, so that just kind of put a damper on the whole thing. It seemed odd that the staff wasn't more straightforward about it, too, and it was the middle of a sunny, peaceful day - why was the power out? The food just wasn't amazing. I didn't hate my soup, and my friend liked her salad well enough, but they didn't wow us enough to be happy with what we ended up with. Cafe RX has a lot of cafeteria-style searing. You order at this small window and pick it up at another and carry it to your seat. I ordered the soup + tuna sandwich + salad combo and as a person recovering from jaw surgery, the soup was perfect. Everything was soft and flavorful. The sandwich was a bit more of a challenge. The tuna was not very fishy and was more like a crab salad...but with tuna. I thought it was a fairly good sandwich. Salad was okay, nothing extraordinary. read more

I literally keep the Acre Menu Googledoc open from 8 am until they post the special for the day. Most of the time I bring my lunch, but it doesn't matterb ecause I still like to see what they have for the day and imagine that I'll be eating it. Something about their salads makes them taste just right, and the plates are the perfect size (as in, I don't have to snack like a cow after lunch). A lot of their sandwiches come on this really great ciabatta, which fills you up nicely. Their penne pasta is great as well, but good god somebody should have warned me about all that cheese (somebody's lactose intolerant...) I love this place! With limited lunch options in the Presidio, Cafe RX has a captive audience for those who don't feel like walking the extra 10 minutes to Chestnut Street, or want something quick - oh wait, this place isn't fast at all. Go here anytime during lunch hour (12-1ish) and you'll probably be waiting in a line 20 people long that doesn't move exceedingly fast. Also, the volume of orders will delay your food about 10 minutes from the time you order to pickup. Having a captive audience means being able to charge the Presidi-tax, and it's clear that people don't mind paying $10 for a sandwich. They do have different menu selections daily, but keywords like 'free range', 'organic', and others are a license to charge more. I wasn't unhappy with my free range chicken sandwich, but I wasn't impressed either. I asked for it to be toasted extra, to which I got a reply 'we toast it a lot anyway' - they didn't, it was soft and the bread got soggy quickly (sandwich places - toast your breads please -_-). I was expecting a large chunk of free range chicken breast, but instead it was chopped up in chunks and a tomato sauce - a sneaky way of giving you less chicken. The side greens were not comment-worthy and overall it was a very 3-star sandwich. Limited drink options available and a breakfast menu that closes at 11am (I can't get a egg and chorizo burrito at lunch time? Did you have to send the ingredients back to the store or something? This isn't McDonalds guys.) also made me not want to come back. General atmosphere was meh. My colleague ordered the chicken tamale (same price as mine, but only 1 decent-sized tamale on the plate) with a disappointing 80/20 ratio of corn to chicken. So, that also factored into my review. I'll probably be here again as I work nearby, and I'll update my review accordingly after I order something else. read more

Good tasting organic selections for lunch. Soup and salad deal for lunch is great because the soup is a large bowl and salad is decent sized so you can get full. Regular sandwich meals, pastas, and salads are also good and quality fresh ingredients are used. For the environmentally conscious, they use biodegradable to-go containers but well charge you $ 0.25 too defray the cost of supplying such green containers. Staff is also very friendly which is a plus. Only down side is I wish they had more outdoor-seating for use when the weather is nice. But being that they are likely trying to maintain the pristine nature of the Presidio Park, the less they provide patrons with the opportunity to litter the better. read more

Extremely friendly staff and amazing food. Rogelio, the head cook/manager, comes up with incredibly varied specials daily. I love the fact that you're never quite sure what will be on the menu from day to day, but you know it will always be delicious. It's gotten me to try some unusual dishes that I would never have thought to try or pair together before! The only downsides are the price and wait time. It's one of the few lunch spots in the Presidio, and the only cafe anywhere near the Thoreau Center/Tides Building. They know they have a monopoly on the market - so the prices are obscene. Also, you can expect to regularly wait upwards of 15 minutes for a cup of soup to go - and if you ordered anything that actually requires cooking, expect to wait 20-25 minutes. It's busiest from 12-1.30, so try to go right when they open or after 1.30-ish to avoid huge lines. read more

We got there at 7:30 a.m. and all the doors were closed. I was a little annoyed because I could not find the actual entrance to get to the cafe. The selections to me were minimal but we made it work and ordered scrambled eggs with bacon. They accompanied that with a few pieces of fruit which was a nice little touch. This is the best kept secret in the Presidio! I've been here several times for lunch and the food is fantastic. The staff is always friendly and willing to make a recommendation and, if you like salsa's, they always have a homemade batch of salsa or pickled peppers available. The salsa is fresh and always very tasty. The only drawbacks are finding the place and the seating. If you don't work in the Presidio, it is almost impossible to find. Also, it is a cafeteria setting with the tables and chair in the hallway. If you can overcome the obstacles, you will be rewarded with an outstanding lunch at a reasonable price. read more

Huge fan of this unfussy, quiet organic cafe hidden in the Thoreau Center. Most of the clientele comes from the nonprofit bloc that works in the building- myself included- but I would recommend this place to anyone passing through the Presidio- this is a deliciously-kept secret. The menu changes daily, and I've had the opportunity to try almost everything they offer- I've always been impressed. Their free-range chicken, found in dishes such as the Cesar salad or the chicken quesadilla, is so much more tender and flavorful than most restaurant fare. Their zucchini and lavender soup is phenomenal. The pizza is heaped with toppings and every bite is delicious. The veggie burger with avocado is succulent and filling. Every salad I've had has been noticeably fresh and crisp, loaded with apples, walnuts, croutons, whatever is in the dish of the day. Moreover, their desserts are pretty excellent too- and they usually donate the leftover cookies to my work! The owner is a hoot, and everyone that works here is so friendly! The other day I was working in the dining area during the morning lull and witnessed an epic Beyoncé jam session from the kitchen staff. Definitely go here if you get the chance. I love Acre Cafe's premise: that they support health in schools and have a little cafe to serve the nonprofit businesses located in the Thoreau Center. However, the food served in the Thoreau Center, for example, the veggie quesadilla is so inconsistently (from crispy to soggy) prepared every time I get it. The quality of ingredients are solid, and the ideas for the dishes are there, but it's just the preparation that sometimes falls short. Even though the veggie burgers are Amy's brand, they do tart them up nicely with roasted onions, which makes all the difference. Their daily special salads are usually very good, but be careful for the side salads. They're dressed at the beginning of the lunch service (or in the morning?) and are often quite limp and wilted if you take your lunch late. read more

The food and surrounding landscape are wonderful at Cafe RX. This is a very traditional style cafe where you order and then pick up your food at a window. However, contrary to the typical cafe food one would expect, the offerings at Cafe RX are gourmet. There are plenty of areas to sit and enjoy your food and the presidio. The line gets long, but the chefs are quick at preparing the food, so even with 10-15 people in line, the wait is relatively short. I had the smoked turkey sandwich on ciabatta bread. It was definitely above average. It was served with a small side salad that I thought was a nice touch. Every item I saw looked absolutely delicious. I would definitely recommend this spot for anyone in the area looking for a good meal. read more

It is fairly remarkable what they're able to do in the 12 square feet they have to work with, and they manage to deliver a pretty interesting and constantly changing menu of organic, healthy foods.
