First time ordering a sandwich from Caffe Stellato. Today at 1:25pm, I ordered a Caprese sandwich with the cashier, but the cook was not at the station. He runs in with a woman behind. It seems that she is a regular customer, as he repeats her sandwich order. Cook makes her sandwich first! I ordered and paid first. Really?!? My friend and I stopped in on Saturday the 9th to get gelato. Some young man was helping us, which later we found out his name was Luis. After tasting a few samples, he cut us off and walks away. We were so confused that he abruptly left us hanging, while another employee came to help us. SO RUDE! He didn't even apologize and stood behind the counter on the other side. If you're that miserable or don't have patience then maybe you shouldn't be working in an environment that revolves around customer service. SMH! After getting some help from his coworkers who were very apologetic, the gelato was fair but we don't know if we'll come back due to our negative experience. read more

The gelato is good - but OMg the sandwiches!! The ciabatta is like the softest, most delicious ciabatta I've ever had in my life. The mozzarella is heavenly. The spices are mouth-watering. I can't wait to try more. Also - this place is a neat find! They have tons of gelato flavors, coffee (like coffee drinks, not just brewed coffee), sandwiches and salad (and looks like crepes might be coming soon), and tons of candy. Like, gummies and jelly beans and all the different things you'd find at a candy store with lots of variety. This is a very welcome addition to Burlingame Avenue. We have gotten sandwiches several times now and gelato twice. Everything is authentically Italian and the quality is wonderful. All the ingredients for the sandwiches are perfect. Their bread is unique and flavorful, whether you get the ciabatta, sourdough or any other kind. , it has the texture and chew of artisan or European bread- a welcome departure from the heavy,doughy white bleached flour floppy bread that most delis use. I would recommend trying one of their sandwiches with lots of ingredients and all of the toppings. The menu is extensive and intentional, so some of the combinations seem like a lot, but the meats and cheeses are laid on the toasted bread in a single, thin- sliced flavorful layer. The combination sandwiches like the Mafiaosa, the Siciliano, the Speciale with the olive tapenade are all delicious. My aon loves the sandwich with hot coppa and the spicy Calabrese spread ( I think it is the Calabrese). You can get simple one or two ingredients with mustard and/or mayo, but this is not a Subway- Adventure is your friend and roasted red peppers, basil and pancetta are superior to pale ubiquitous tomato, iceberg and floopy bacon. There are several great ice cream options in Burlingame, but as far as I know, this is the only place where gelato is offered. I love all of the flavor options. Each of the fruit options taste like fresh frozen fruit- intense and delicate at the same time. Quality ingredients matter and the display case is so vibrant and beautiful. You cannot go wrong with the Tahitian Vanilla or the Valrhona Chocolate. The summer that I was 12, I camped In 10 countries in Europe in a 3 man tent for 100 days without a kitchen or a stove. It was a fresh and local ingredient picnic for almost every meal and ice cream every day. Getting a meal from Cafe Stellato reminds me of the very best of these meals- adjusted for my grown up palate. Cafe Stellato will certainly be a Summer staple. I would try to recreate some of the sandwiches on the menu, but this would be foolhardy because my renditions wouod cost more to assemble and would be inferior. Bravo Cafe Stellato! read more

After dinner, I was craving something sweet. I "yelped" gelato and this was one of the first places that popped up. I got one scoop of white chocolate raspberry since I love a mix of sweet and tart flavors. It was really good definitely a 5/5 flavor. Hidden gem! My neighbors took me and my son here this afternoon for lunch. We ordered a Caprese with Prosciutto and mmm mmm mmm! I halved it with my neighbor and I'm glad we did bc it was HUGE. Absolutely love their gelato! They have a good variety of flavors, some of which are dairy free if you have a dairy intolerance. We have tried their guava, watermelon, and mango and all are delicious. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is their portion sizes are tiny for the price. Incredibly rude service. I hate to leave one star reviews ever but they deserve it. If you have a nut allergy or any allergy, don't come here. I asked a worker what the "Tony spaglioni" flavor contained because you can't tell from the name. He said to just try it but I said I can't, I have a nut allergy so can he tell me what's in that flavor. And he said there's nuts in it and said to try it if I want. I again reiterated that I have an allergy and he says, don't try it then and rolls his eyes. All I asked was what the flavor was. Robs customers with 3% "Service Fee" I just bought 3 ice creams and paid the bill thinking the menu prices were what I would be charged for. Had the receipt printed only to find out I was charged a 3% service fee. For what? Literally handing me an ice cream cone over the counter? There is nothing on the menu, sign in the store, nothing about the service fee. I didn't want to make a scene in front of the kids and while there were others in line. Watch your bills people people. To the business owner, stop being so shady with your prices. You just lost a local over a 3% fee. This kind of behavior is going to be illegal in California, just wait. read more

Sandwiches are on the smaller side and a bit pricey for what it is. Typically, whenever I get sandwiches, I can eat half and save the rest for later. At Caffe Stellato, I was able to consume the whole thing in one sitting. However, it did taste fresh and it hit the spot for me as I was craving an Italian sandwich. We ordered the goodfella sandwich ($14.99) and the vegatariana ($12.99). I was concerned that there might be a line as I went during lunch time, but it was relatively empty. They also allowed me to call ahead and order by phone. The people working inside were nice...but I'm not really happy with the hidden charges. When it was time to pay, they asked me if I wanted to pay by card or cash. I had both forms, but decided to pay by card. My total was $31.72 for 2 sandwiches which was a bit high, but I didn't think too much of it. After I got home, I was so surprised to see a "non-cash discount" of 3.75% tacked onto my bill. I was never notified of this hidden fee, nor were any signs posted by the register. I would suggest that the business make this very clear to customers. It would have been a different story had this been brought to my attention. Also, my understanding of a discount is that you take OFF money, not ADD more cost. Delicious! We heard that the gelato was good so we had to try. I got a scoop of chocolate and a scoop of the Kahlua and I wanted more! The flavors were rich and creamy. We also got a slice of tiramisu cake and they use dianda's bakery which we have loved for generations in our family so we love them for that. Definitely will be back to try more flavors. read more

Amazing!!! Just one word is enough to describe their gelato. I was looking for a nice gelato place after dinner and was happily surprised by this new spot which opened couple of months ago. The owner was nice and offered us taste spoons for couple of flavors. It was hard to decide which one to get. They were all so good. We finally got pistachio and kahlua almond. The flavors and the taste looked familiar and it reminded me of Alimento in North Beach, SF. After talking more to the owner, he told me that Alimento is their another shop and he has been around for long time there. Plus their chef is the same one who has been with them for decades.
