We decided to give Cala a try on a midweek afternoon. Located inside the Senna House Hotel, this eatery is such a vibe with its modern upscale roots & Mediterranean flare entreès. Large dining tables make it a great spot for big parties. We started off with the Flaming Saganaki- which was by far my favorite thing I ate here. A small brick of kasseri cheese is elegantly torched & gives off a beautiful show of flames. Served with house made focaccia, this appetizer is an absolute must! Not only is it pretty, but tastes so good too! I opted for the Paccheri Alla Salsiccia for my main entrée. A large pillow shaped pasta served with sausage & broccoli in a creamy Alfredo like sauce. The dish itself did not offer much flavor, and I felt the empty pasta should've been filled with a cheese or something! It was certainly missing that good filling you just bite into where it melts in your mouth. Although it fell short in taste, it definitely has potential! It was good.... I'm sure you are paying mostly for the vibes! My baby daughter picked this place as she wanted a girls night out for Valentines. We made reservations several days prior and arrived early however there was still a bit of a wait. My youngest and I ordered the lamb shank, my oldest ordered pizza and we had hummus and feta muss for the table. The lamb shank was well seasoned and super tinder and it was a very nice size portion to me the pizza was a wired combination and kinda soft but my daughter said she liked it so that's all that mattered. Edit: Ariana, one of the managers, reached out to me to review the events of the evening and genuinely cared about her customers and the restaurant. I love the accountability that she took and the genuine apology for our less than great experience. I can tell they are going to work to improve this, based on the response. High hopes for this business. The service: We booked an event reservation for 10 people, and put down a $250 deposit. The reservation was for 9pm, so we showed up around 8:50. They told us the table wasn't ready and to check back at 9. When we did, we were met with attitude from the hostesses and told the table still wasn't ready, but to wait for them to text me before coming back to the host stand. They made us wait 24 minutes after our reservation time before texting me that our table was ready. Off to a great start. Once seated, our sweet server, Aundrea, helped get us situated, and brought out waters for everyone. I bought a $250 add on package that includes a signature cocktail. When I mentioned the cocktail from the package, the server said it was a mini cocktail. I clarified that I paid for the celebration package, and that it should be full size. She said she would double check on that for me. After coming back, she said the manager said they would allow them to be full size as a thank you for us being patient and having to wait. Excuse me?? No. The manager should "allow" them to be full size because that's what I paid for. OR update the pamphlet you sent me when I was organizing my event. You weren't doing me any favors or hooking me up as a thank you. Educate yourselves on your own menu, or come out and talk to our table yourself. A little face time feels personal and goes a long way. For that I don't blame the server - she's just a middle man. They did bring out a tray with shots for us at the end- but we watched them do that for every table that was a bachelorette party (at least 3 others while we were there) We are thankful, but I just want to make sure they don't come on here and pretend that was their apology for being so far behind when they took so much of our money. One of our girls is left handed, and accidentally knocked over someone else's drink, and our server graciously replaced the drink for her and brought out extra napkins. The food: The only good thing was the whipped ricotta appetizer. The pasta was okay, but bland and not flavorful. It needed more salt and still tasted vague. The chicken was drier than the desert. The broccolini was under cooked. The salmon still had some bones in it, and everything on the plate tasted the exact same. It was very peppery - like the vegetable not the spice. The "seasonal desert" was a vanilla cake, that was worse than the chicken in terms of dryness. It was as though it had been sitting out all week. And the whipped cream on top was gritty and chalky. Some of the fruit on top was even overripe and squishy. The whole thing was awful. The facility: The building itself was okay, the ambience was decent, but the bar was overcrowded and the bathrooms were disgusting. One star is purely for consistent issues the whole night mainly service related; however, food is just mid and overpriced to me. Came here with a reservation for a birthday dinner for 6. Really liked the atmosphere, and we were sat down outside which was super nice. The issues started with our drink orders. Some of my table had ordered espresso martinis with vodka as the menu states choose vodka or tequila. However, they came back with tequila versions twice before we got ones with vodka in them. In between this whole time they never brought out another member's drink - and we had to reorder their drink after the martini situation was handled as they just forgot. Past that we got our food which was ok to me. I had the bucatini and was very disappointed in the flavors as it was a wagyu beef bucatini bolognese, but tasted like spaghetti I made at home. Only thing that stuck out was pasta cooked al dente. The vodka pasta on the other hand was pretty good could taste a rich vodka sauce. Lastly the dessert. We had brought in a custom cake and called them beforehand as a surprise for our friend. We brought it up to the waitress that it was the pink cake from X bakery after we were done eating. She comes back 5 minutes later with not our cake! So we had to explain and they eventually came back with our cake. After this the waitress asked if they would like another martini. My friend said yes, and lo and behold they came out with the tequila one again and not the vodka which was comical. They did comp two of the martinis which I'm glad but still shouldn't have even gotten to that point. On top of that when the bill came out they charged us a cake fee (the cake they incorrectly brought out) which we had to bring up again and ask why were we charged that and get it taken off. Someone please tell me why there is also A CREDIT CARD SURCHARGE FEE (3%?!?!?). Makes no sense that I am being charged a credit card surcharge. If it was one thing like the drinks were mixed up once then that's ok. Mistakes happen, but the fact it just happened over and over and more stuff happened on top of it is just silly to me. We chose Cala for our Mother's Day brunch, and unfortunately, it was the worst dining experience any of us in our party of five have ever had. The service was incredibly slow from start to finish. We waited over 20 minutes just to be seated, and once seated, the wait for our food was extremely long. To make matters worse, we were only informed after placing our order that there was a $55 per person minimum charge -- for brunch. This information should absolutely have been communicated by the hostess or server beforehand so guests could make an informed decision before ordering. What made the experience even more uncomfortable was the way our waitress repeatedly reminded us that we were still "$100 under" the minimum. Being told this multiple times throughout the meal felt tactless and unprofessional. The atmosphere also felt completely off for a Mother's Day brunch. Loud club-style music created an environment that felt more suited for late-night nightlife than a family holiday meal. There were also an inordinate amount of flies circling our table. By the end, we simply wanted to leave. We ordered one entrée to go just to meet the minimum and then waited another 30-40 minutes for that item alone. Overall, the combination of poor communication, slow service, uncomfortable upselling, and an inappropriate atmosphere completely ruined what was supposed to be a special Mother's Day celebration. read more

Claimed that they had no other tables and had other folks move to the table we were originally sat at. Very unprofessional manager (Bree) who instead of trying to solve the situation tried to double down and move us into the outside table under the direct sun. This was for Mother's Day brunch, and restaurant attitude soured the mood. Had the nicest girls day lunch here with my girlfriend! We sat on the patio, it was so cute and elegantly decorated with the Christmas decorations. Our server Riley was amazing, she took such great care of my newly gluten-free friend and even pointed out gluten-free options we didn't know they had. My friends and I came here for brunch on Saturday after leaving the airport. I loved the vibe and the interior in this place. They weren't able to seat us inside even though it was pretty empty except for 3 large groups, 2 small tables, and 2 at the bar when we arrived. It was very hot outside on the patio so we weren't too happy about that. The misters were on but it didn't really hit us at all. I felt bad for the dj playing outside in this heat. We didn't feel like searching for another spot so we just stayed. Our order: Mimosa Tray $70 3 Casamigos Blanco Egg White Shakshuka Flaming Saganaki Turkish Eggs x2 Shrimp Cocktail Cala Burger Huevos Rancheros The mimosa tray was split between 4 of us and there was enough for about 2 glasses each. It came with grapefruit, oj, pineapple and cranberry juice. My Egg White Shakshuka was delicious paired with the toasted pita. I would order this dish again. Very filling and I still had a little bit left! My friends all said they liked their dishes as well. However, 3 people in the group did have some stomach issues later that evening and we determined that it must have been from the Flaming Saganaki since the rest of us did not eat that. I've heard a lot of good things about this restaurant, so I decided to come check it out. I really enjoyed it! We got there in time to enjoy the tail end of happy hour. We ordered the flaming saganaki cheese (watch out, don't sit too close!), which is a harder salty greek cheese that is tasty on the toast it is served with. We also tried the Peruvian scallop crudo, which is comprised of three small scallops in the shell with a citrusy sauce around it. I enjoyed sipping the leftover sauce from the shell! One is by the main entrance and the second one is off to the side which is larger. Our server was great and recommended some great items from the menu. We had a party of 6 and a reservation at 7pm. They were behind on reservations, so we had to wait a bit. The restaurant is beautiful, and the service is great, Juan did an amazing job with our party. Definitely paying the price though, they also charge extra when paying with a credit card. I got the vodka pasta, delicious, however I felt the portion to be a little small because I'm a small girl and I was still hungry after inhaling it, but I could have just been starving. The drinks were yummy, ambiance gives off a small club vibe. I made a reservation for 4 in advance and when we arrived we waited a couple of minutes before the hostess brought us out to the patio, once we arrived at the patio she apologized and said the table had not been cleared like she had thought so she asked us to take a seat at the bar while it is cleared (no problem..) once our table is ready she leads us over and we sit for about 5 minutes before she comes back and tells us she needs us to move! A significant letdown, unfortunately. For a restaurant touted as a refined dining experience, and boasting a price point to match, the execution fell drastically short of expectations. From the outset, the atmosphere felt compromised. People were not talking and enjoying dinner as you'd expect, but most were looking to move seats, due to the open window seating and the rather cold air blowing in. We did not opt for a different seat, thinking hopefully it'll be okay. Unfortunately, we were left shivering, a far cry from the cozy atmosphere one hopes for in a high-end establishment. The food itself matched the ambience. The chicken thigh, a seemingly simple dish, was rendered dry and unpalatable. The carbonara, while not meant to be served piping hot, was served well below room temperature--a congealed mass that lacked any semblance of the creamy, rich texture it should have possessed. You can see in the photo that the cream had already solidified by the time we were served the dish. Cala's attempt at "fancy" felt more like disregard for the diner's experience. I don't know if the food is any good because our 8:00 reservation was seemingly ignored by a very young and very unprofessional staff as we stood waiting and waiting. Went for dinner with a party of 8. Made reservations and when they got there we were told the could only seat us outside. We selected indoors when making the reservation. Not even an option of a wait time, just nope you can not sit inside. It is 102 degrees out. The room temp tap water didn't help. That should have been mentioned while making the reservation. Also why are their plants hanging above the table. We all got leaves in our drinks and food continuously throughout the meal. Bathroom was stellar. Individual stalls. Stocked paper towels and a door you don't have to touch to exit. 10/10 no notes on the bathroom. They were busy so take this with a grain of salt, but the service was slow and forgetful. Food was okay. Not worth it for the price. Expensive sides with two tiny slices of bread always rubs me the wrong way. I feel like I should have to order two sides orders of bread to finish the dip. Whipped ricotta was good. Hummus was bland but tasted ok. Chicken and gravy were very flavorful. I got a pork loin and the side that came with it was "marinated tomatoes". Marinated tomatoes consists of 3 pickled cherry tomato halves. They weren't good. The pork chop looked very sad sitting on the plate with nothing but a garnish and a white sauce that matched the color of the plate. Drinks were strong but didn't taste good if your into a heavy handed pour maybe worth going to the bar but skipping the food. Waitstaff was polite but as previously stated forgetful. Security was weirdly rude and were clearly upset that we were waiting inside for the valet to get our car. We brought a little cake and they cut it up and plated it for us so that was a very nice touch. For my entree I got the wagyu bolognese and it was so good! The noodles were hand made and the tomato sauce was just thin enough to cover the noodles evenly but thick enough to stick to them. Went here on a date and enjoyed it', the hostess greeted us quickly and sat us promptly as well. This atmosphere is cool with the restaurant kind of in the lobby of the hotel. It is a younger crowd and quite loud. I had the salmon which was good. I would go back here in cooler weather to enjoy the patio. read more

We came a while ago and had a very mid tier experience, I emailed them my concerns but had no luck with getting a response. The food was pretty good and the restaurant itself is very beautiful. We got lemon ricotta pancakes, fries, and a vodka pasta to share. We liked the pasta so much we ordered another order of it. The second time it came out, it had significantly less pasta shells, and came with cherry tomatoes when the first dish did not, I have to assume they ran out of pasta or something, and tries to supplement the volume with tomatoes instead, in any case, it really wasn't what we ordered and it seems dishonest to serve us that instead of just letting us know that they were out of something. read more

I came in with a party of 6, we had a reservation made two weeks in advance. We waited a total of 25 minutes past 8:30 while we watched multiple walk-in tables larger than ours be sat. When we were finally sat there was strangely no silverware at our table. Our server seemed irritated the whole night and met us with hostility. Despite this, and the wait time, we were celebrating a birthday, and did not have time to change dinner plans on a busy Saturday night in old town, with a group as large as ours. On top of the questionable service, to really solidify our poor experience, our steaks were severely undercooked, and the Greek salad was simply tasteless. The only positive from the night was the lamb. So many other great options in AZ, save your time and money and skip this one. read more
