The food was above expectations for Chinese fare. We shared a number of dishes. Started with the chicken wing appetizer. They were meaty and the sauce was a complicated mixture of hot and spicy. Next up was the main courses. Singapore noodle, the noodles were light and delicately covered with a curry sauces. It was tasty but not too overpowering. There was a nice mix of the chicken, shrimp and tender strips of BBQ pork. Mongolian beef. I've had this other places and the meat always seems to be on the chewier side. Here it was tender and lightly bathed in an awesome sauce with just the right amount of kick. Asparagus and shrimp. I love the combination of all the ingredients of this dish, however I would have liked the asparagus to be a little less al dente. The ambience of the interior belies the drabness of its strip mall location. It is very tasteful, warm and welcoming. The service was also very attentive and helpful. This is our go to Chinese restaurant here in La Quinta. One might say we are creatures of habit because we have eaten here so much we now only order our favorites every time - Host & Sour soup, orange chicken, spicy crispy shrimp and combination lo mein. We have tried many others, but these are the dishes we come for. Each of these dishes satisfies all of our family's craving. The kids fav is the orange chicken and has been their favorite since they were very young. We all love the combination lo mein and it is filled with chicken. beef and shrimp with perfect noodles and veggies. The crispy shrimp with the jalapeno, onions and special sauce was delicious. I've been to the Canton Bistro before, but I always have such a good time here - this is the first time I've remembered to take pictures and write a review! Located in the heart of La Quinta (and right next to GameStop; double win!), the Canton Bistro is easy to find and a great option for a restaurant "on the way" to any afternoon or evening activity. They started us off with a small bowl of egg drop soup which was spot on - the soup was creamy and lightly salted. Our appetizer of choice was the vegetable tempura which is a MUST for anyone. Crispy vegetables that still retain their flavor! As for our entrees, we chose the Mangolian Beef and Kung Pao Chicken, served with their respective sides of rice. At the end of the day, I have only positive things to say about the Canton Bistro. The food is always great, the service is always friendly, and the ambiance of the restaurant is modern, yet relaxing. Forget it. Not good. There is not good Chinese in the desert Ny eve. Not busy. Hmmm?.. Service was good Hot and sour soup horrible nothing in it except broth and a few pieces of pork Fried rice. While we were waiting for our lunch, the owner and his family walked in to have lunch. I loved that. Both of us got lunch specials. The entree comes with steamed or fried rice and a soup. Both of us opted to upgrade our soups. I got the hot and sour, for a $1 more. He got the won ton soup for $2 more. His looked pretty darn good. My hot and sour was good, but not as "smoky" as I like it. I ordered the basil chicken. I was super happy with it. Chicken, onions, celery, carrot, sliced fresh jalapeno and leaves of basil in a light sauce. I am not a fan of Chinese food swimming in sauce, so this was perfect. We asked for some hot sauce and we were brought a generous portion of sambal. Both of us eagerly scooped it over our dishes. I was so into my lunch that I didn't even notice what he ordered. When I looked up, we had empty plates. Service was great. The only slip up was our drink order. Both of us asked for iced tea, but also asked for a glass of water. We were both brought waters. This place is always either a hit or a miss.. At least service wise. The food is always good in my opinion at least. But they always forget to leave the shrimp out of my friends wonton soup (allergic). They have a great lunch menu for a really good price. I've been to a lot of Chinese restaurants, but this place has really good tea. I end up drinking like 2 pots to myself lol Hopefully the service improves consistently.. I just ordered for the first time. They were supposed to deliver the food. When I called to make sure they got my order, they had no idea what I was talking about. They left me holding on the phone for 10 min. Without coming to answer the call. I had to call back.. they told me they don't deliver and that I should call for someone to pick up the food and then deliver it to me. (Excuse me?? You don't know who delivers your food??) They finally answered my 2nd call only to tell me that my food was on the way. This was not true. I had to reassure them I did not have an order for anything. After the first hour went by, I noticed that it stated on yelp that my delivery was delayed. I called and called this restaurant to no avail. The phone was busy and busy ... my delay by now was 1-1/2 hrs. When the food finally got here, It was left on the outside. They did not wait for me to open the door. The service I got was outstanding. I need to cater for at least 10 young adults for my son's bday. I spoke to Jason, who worked with my budget and my needs. I arrived and he even helped me load the trays in my van. The food was very delicious to top it off. They never disappoint with great food, service and hospitality! We enjoyed the reasonably priced lunch special which included soup, rice and a main dish. What a treat the Chicken with Eggplant was and my Dad's standard, he recently passed at almost 92, so in his honor we had his favorite Mongoian Beef. HOT, Delicious, High Quality and made to order. I even had my special Dynamite special sauce on the side of Soy, Jalapeno's, Green Onion and as always, it was delicious with a KICK! Tonight we ordered 4 dinners and one appetizer. This is not the first time ordered from here. The general tsaos chicken was excellent. I used to go here at least once every couple of months, but never again. Try the Chinese restaurant next to the Dollar Store / Home Depot just down the street. I love this place and I'm always here almost every weekend. Probably the best Chinese food I've had. Today I went and maaaaan the worst service ever! Jesus was our server, nice guy however he had our table and 8 others! We just got one refill. I had to get napkins my self from another table after asking twice. I called the hostess a couple time totally ignored me. She had a nasty attitude when I got up and asked for our tab- slamming things and all. Came in out of the heat for a quick lunch. We were quickly seated and greeted by our server Daisy. We chose the Mongolian beef and sweet and sour pork lunch special. Each came with a soup if you wanted sweet and sour soup it was a $1 up charge or wonton it was $2 upcharge. Drinks were $3 each. The food was quite tasty. It's not easy to find good Chinese food in the Coachella Valley. Today, we tried this place for the first time. Wow! We were impressed. Started with a Wonton soup loaded with fresh veggies and various proteins. Delicious. I had the mu shu pork and my husband had the lunch special beef and green beans. I ordered through Door Dash and they apparently called the driver as he was getting close to our home to let him know they only gave him 1 of our bags. So we were missing most of our food. I blame both the driver, (who pocketed a $30 tip I might add) and the restaurant but that isn't why I gave them 1 star. The food, of what we did get, was subpar at best. It's not bad, but if you want larger servings or something better I would just go to P.F. Chang's. I have been here several times and it feels as if every time I come my overall all experience gets worse. Hopefully, it was just me being picking because I'd hate for a local and authentic restaurant be going out of business do to a chain. Our service was just decent. Tables and booth seating spacious not all crowded together. Menu with plenty of offerings from appetizers, soups, seafood, meats plus vegetarian. My first experience and new to the area decided to try this recommended place for lunch. Lovely decor inside, good service, but food was mediocre at best. Egg drop soup was watered down, no flavor and unappealing. The highly rated Mongolian beef was tender, but no snow peas, no ginger, no vegetables except lots of raw onions & spicy red peppers. I've been here a few times and normally it's fairly good food. However, this time I was very disappointed. We ordered takeout with a bunch of different things to share for the family. We realized when we got home that the vegetarian orange chicken we ordered was clearly not the vegetarian version. I understand accidents happen, but everything should be double checked. Now it will most likely go in the trash because most people in the home cannot eat it. In addition, the egg rolls seemed like they had been sitting a while and we only got 1/2 a container of sauce for 4 egg rolls. Went to eat there on my lunch hour. My work is only 5 minutes away so I had plenty of time to go there. Once I get there we ordered our food right away so we wouldn't waste anytime. I went to this restaurant on Friday night. The serve was awful and the waiter could care less about my complaint. For example, I ordered a large bowl of wonton soup. When the waiter finally brought it out to the table, it was a large bowl of nothing. It was chicken broth with mostly chopped up lettuce pieces, two thin sliced carrots and a piece of shrimp. There were no wontons. NO WONTONS. When I complained to the waiter about my soup, he looked at it and said, "Oh." He left and did not take the soup back to the kitchen. Instead, he brought me out a small bowl of 4 wontons. He dropped them off at the table and started to leave. I complained again that this was unacceptable and he replied, "you wanted wontons." He started to leave when I raised my voice and told him this is not good Chinese food and I did not appreciate his service or lack there of. I told him I wasn't paying for this and to cancel my remaining order. I got up and left the restaurant. The service was awful and the food was crap. If you want good authentic Chinese food, I suggest going to the Shanghai Inn in Rancho Mirage. I have no affiliation with either restaurant, but the Shanghai Inn is always consistent. Great food, good serve and attention to detail. The Canton Bistro is a dump. Don't waste your time or hard earned money at the Canton Bistro. read more
