Visited on a weekend with a large party for brunch. The place was busy, but not overwhelmed. As others have mentioned, decor was that of the previous place. Our server was attentive and pleasant. The food was fair. I ordered a Denver omelette and was served a different omelette. It was someone in my party so we traded after each of us made a cut. Unfortunately the omelettes had the consistency of soup in the middle and both were sent back to be cooked. The potatoes were alright. Where to start... Last night my bf and I decided to try this restaurant. As long time Alamedians, we remember when this place was a Sizzler back in the 80's and 90's. When we went in, another couple was exiting and gave us a "good luck" glance in passing. The restaurant was covered in decor from Shell Shock, the previous restaurant that was at this location. Crabs, fishing nets, a giant shark on the ceiling. It reminded me of that pirate restaurant that John Candy ate at in the 1985 movie "Summer Rental." (Side note -- If you haven't seen it, watch it. It's hilarious!) The hostess was very friendly and sat us as a table by the window. She quickly cleared away extra place settings, as it was just my bf and I. He noticed that one of the coffee mugs had lipstick still on it. Thr hostess asked us what we wanted to drink, so we both said Diet Coke. She came back a few minutes later and said that they didn't have any Diet Coke. We ended up asking for iced tea. (On a side note, don't ask for a refill -- you literally have to purchase another drink. No refills allowed!) While we went over the 6 page menu, we decided what we wanted. When I let the server know I wanted a grilled chicken sandwich, she said no and that they were only available for lunch. Okayyy...I decided on the California Club sandwich with fries. While we waited for our food they brought out a plate of sliced baguette and butter. Pretty good! My bf had ordered a burger which came with fries and a soup. He had the clam chowder. He said it tasted like it came from a tin can. He eats clam chowder often, so he definitely knows the difference. He said the burger was okay. My sandwich was okay, too. I'm still wondering why they put a garlic aioli on it. It was odd. Also, I thought club sandwiches have bacon? They use ham. I probably won't order that sandwich, if for some reason we decide to go to that restaurant again. The fries were pretty good, though. While eating we could hear the cook sneezing in the kitchen. The restaurant also remained virtually empty almost the entire time we were there. Two other people were eating at other tables. I'm not sure what's going on with this place, but it seems like the opening was seriously rushed. Maybe they should have waited a little longer to get everything ready, because I came for dinner, and it was a strange experience. I mean, the decor from Shell Shock is still up. Anyway, they were testing their dinner menu or something as part of a soft opening. I ordered a Kobe burger and it came with sourdough bread instead of regular burger buns. When I asked about it, the waiter admitted they ran out of buns. Why I wasn't told before getting my order, I don't know. If I had known, I would have ordered something else. Even the waiter admitted to me that a burger with sandwich bread was a no for her. The patty tasted good, but it was kind of weird with the bread. The chef came out as well, but ngl he was strange too. Sunglasses indoors at night and tbh I don't think he did a good job explaining the food. After ordering, the waiter told us my boyfriend could pick an extra side with his order. My boyfriend was in the restroom, so I said something like, "I'm not sure what he would want." Then the chef came out with them, and he said "you seemed indecisive so we made a decision for you," which I found kind of rude.... They have a very nice mushroom and green beans dish but everything else we had seemed quite basic. Waiter was very nice and accommodating, even overly so. Nice place, just opened. We hope this business grows more in popularity because it's nice, a lot of potential and Alameda needs more places to eat with some variety. We went for breakfast, they had a good sized menu with many options. We had California Benedict and Steak and eggs. California Benedict was good, but came out Luke warm, considering we were the only two in the place, I was surprised. But it was yummy. The Steak and eggs were good too. The steak was very thick and made it difficult to chew, a thinner cut would be better. Still, very good. The servers were very attentive and friendly. The music was a bit of a turn off because they were playing the radio through the speakers. Hearing the commercials and talking from radio host broke into the vibe. The decor was kinda funny, but lots of seating and the lighting was cool. Some simple, cheap tweaks will make a huge difference in vibe. But we read they are keeping the decor from the restaurant before until they get settled. The big tv's showing news was a bit distracting. All in all, good place and did not disappoint. I went into Cape 7 Cafe today for the first time. I was greeted warmly at the door by a server named Elle. She couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming. Had a quick lunch of eggs Benedict. I ordered the traditional one with hash browns. Service was quick and so friendly. The food was carefully prepared and served promptly. It was delicious! They have other Benedict's on the menu and next time will try the highly recommended tri tip version. I hope people give this lovely restaurant a try. I want them to succeed. We had dinner here about a month after it opened. Horrible experience. We heard that their breakfast was much better and when we drove by we saw that the restaurant had a lot of full tables so we decided to give it another try for breakfast. We were seated right away but then we waited for water, we waited for coffee, we had to ask for refills. We waited over an hour for food. Server told us that there was only one cook. Breakfast finally came and the pancakes were not good, hash browns were raw, bacon tasted weird and my toast was stone cold. We don't mind waiting for food if we had been told what as going on and we had made the choice to wait. But to find out after waiting 30 minutes that it was going to be another 15-20 minutes really made me mad AND the food wasn't up to the hype we had heard. This place is just as bad as the other reviews say. We came in at 7 pm for diner and the place was practically empty. There was only one other pair of dinners. We ordered the hotpot combo and a chicken bento box. The wait for the food was ridiculous long, even though the kitchen was only making the food for us since the other table already got theirs. After 25 minutes, the waiter delivered the hot pot. They gave a good portion for the hotpot, but the broth was simply off. It just tasted very bland. Definitely was not a bone broth. My bento box took another 10 minutes to finally come out. It was an assortment of stuff that don't really belong in a bento box. There was a runny scrambled egg and tomato dish that looked like a child had made. There were boiled peanuts, lettuce with mayo, kimchee, rice and a very weird piece of fried chicken. This was the weirdest bento box I ever got. It was like they just throw whatever leftovers in the kitchen into the box. The miso soup tasted very sour for some reason. To the point: this place is great. There are a number of reasons for this. First, the food is fairly good, but keep in mind the menu is vast here. From Chinese BBQ to all-day breakfast and sandwiches, there's something for everyone, but the quality across the menu can vary. My wife had the BBQ and I had the club sandwich, both were stellar. My wife, who is very picky when it comes to "authentic" Chinese food, was extremely satisfied with the taste and quality. The service was also quite warm and attentive. Our waitress was so friendly and worked with us to find the items on the menu we'd love. The place is big, and there's plenty of space. Not too loud either so it's easy to have a conversation. I thought it was nice they had three televisions showing various programs appropriate for different ages. Overall, I'd say give this place a chance. When I walked into this restaurant, I was immediately met with an unwelcoming stare from the boy working at the front desk. He didn't greet me or say anything--just stood there, glaring with a mean expression. It's Saturday night, 6:30 p. m. Prime time for a restaurant. There's nobody here. They have 1 employees working tonight. He's the greeter, the server, the cook and the dishwasher. He's shaky, hard to understand his broken English. He seems very nervous. After I ordered my cheeseburger. I was going to order a beer but he quickly walked away. 10 minutes later I had tracked him down. He told me there were four beers available. Corona, modela, some Japanese beer and Heretic. Still looks like the old crab shack when you walk in, non of the decor seemed to have changed under new ownership which doesn't really fit the vibe. Whatever tho, it was clean and the staff was friendly so whatever confusion with the ambiance is easily forgotten. Now friendly service/cleanliness so why the 3 stars? The food...not terrible by any means but also not that good either. Considering the many breakfast places in the island this just doesn't really seem to meet the standard. Don't get me wrong, some of the items sounds great but just seems to fail the expectation. A month later, I came back and ordered a same Joe's Special and it turned out consistently. The taste of sauteed grounded beef, with crispy mushrooms, lightly sauteed spinach and onions were so delicious. From simple omelette and bacon to waffles and baked potato omelet, it not only satisfied our appetite but also gave us energy for the day. The taste was great, The portions are generous and the ingredients are fresh. The coffee with free refills is delicious. My husband and I decided to eat here after church on Sunday. The place was clean, bright, and even if they kept the old decor, it doesn't bother me. However, the server, while very nice, didn't seem to know the menu very well. There seemed to be confusion when ordering and when the food came out, it had to be sent back because nothing was correct, and it was missing items that the menu said it came with. Furthermore, the servers seemed to be covering way too many tables, and we waited a very long time to get our check and had to go find someone to print it for us. Also, the owner or manager was sitting in a booth next to us and listening to loud videos on his phone and doing absolutely nothing to help. He wasn't running checks even though multiple tables were clearly waiting for the check; he wasn't running food; he wasn't bussing tables; didn't notice our food was sent back even though he was seated next to us.
