I have been coming to this location for 10 years. The oysters they serve are always big, cold and FRESH. They shuck them in front of you and I like that they pass them thru water to serve them clean. I am not a fan of cornmeal and I like that they always fry up my seafood in flour when I ask- for no extra charge. The food always gets out HOT and delicious.They put all the condiments and a bucket of lemons in front of you - which I LOVE- I can never get too many lemons. As for the service? These guys are on it!! They get to know their customers...as soon as I walk in they get my michelada ready for me. When I was pregnant and couldn't have alcohol they would make me non- alcoholic version. After the BP oil spill- the prices went up and I can just now see them coming back down...but overall they are pretty reasonable. read more

Captain Benny's had (not sure if they still do) a great deal of 5.95 for a dozen oysters! The oysters are decent sized and taste great, and they always sneak in an extra oyster for you. They also have great entree deals on Tuesdays.. I believe it's called tilapia tuesdays? I would have gotten it if it wasn't for the oysters! Gotta get em while you can. Just left. I got a combination whole catfish and shrimp ( I thought it came with Cole slaw but it doesn't) at my servers suggestion. He didn't tell me his name but Rigoberto was on the ticket. He was very nice but I noticed that all the Latino patrons he was serving had these huge beautiful shrimp and I had little puny ones. I will try to post a picture. He also didn't tell me o could have rice instead of fries. The food was hot, but it had not one bit of salt on anything rendering it pretty tasteless. I so wanted this to be good as I love seafood. I am determined to find a good place in this state if it kills me. I'll take all suggestions. Loved the space. Nice and sort of divey, just enough to make it interesting. We went primarily for the oysters and was disappointed with the quality as the taste was not fresh. The price for the dozen is $14 not including tip. I'm so mixed about this place, where do I start? Good or bad? Let's do good. The oysters. Hands down have to be the best oysters I've had anywhere in the Houston area. If you're an oyster fanatic, definitely come here for raw oysters. For that matter any of the food is really good, especially the mixed fried seafood plates. Tho they had a menu change and some things weren't as good after, like the boiled shrimp in the shell. Very good the first couple times I had them but not as good the last time, that's one of the menu items that changed. The bad. Hrm. One time someone ladled out a bowl of gumbo for a customer then a few minutes later came back and poured it back into the pot of gumbo. To then ladle out a cup of gumbo. Really? I'm sorry you messed up your order but I don't think you should have poured it back into the pot after you served it. Another mess up, mine. I ordered some baked oysters, new on the menu. They made the wrong thing. Instead of redoing it fresh, the correct spices got put on the wrong spices and the whole mess went back into the oven. So I ended up with over salty, over baked oysters. Meh. And the whole fiasco about the craft beer. It's on their marquee out front, craft beer Mondays. They have craft beer posters on the wall. They have craft beer on the menu. I try to order a craft beer. "Oh we don't have any." I point to all the things that say they do. "Oh we don't, no one would buy it so we stopped carrying it." I kept persevering and asking and finally was rewarded with an offering of 4 beers, a St Arnold, a Karbach, a Southern Star and a Real Ale despite them having like 12 craft beers listed on their menu. (I got the Santo). And the oysters. They're excellent but some people get very sloppy shucking them. Not just grit and bits of shell in the oyster but I've also seen them get slapped onto the ice. Oyster slid off the shell? No problem, just pick it up with your fingers and slip it back on. Very cringe-worthy to watch. One time we got some that had a Corona bottle cap nestled between two oysters. We got an apology but no comp, I think at least we should have gotten an extra oyster or two. Will I keep going back? Yeah, for the oysters and for the fried seafood platters and perhaps even to see what they're going to mess up next. (it's amusing, in a train-wreck sort of way) *** Since I posted this review, they changed the marquee out front (which had read the same thing for months). It's not about craft beer Mondays anymore. While I am not a fan of how the inside is arranged, I am a fan of the food. I was having my car tinted at the place next door and decided to have dinner there and everything I ordered was very good. They are always out of the New York (long island) oysters, only 1 person at the bar area trying to serve everyone seated, wow, he was overwhelmed that day, and the food just didn't taste as good/fresh as other locations. I have been to Captain Tom's before, so I expected something similar, in terms of restaurant style & food, so I apologize if I compare to Captain Tom's! I'm assuming that they will take your order if you signal them if you sit inside. Their inside was CLEAN! I'm very impressed by how clean everything is! Their menu included raw oysters, baked oysters, & a variety of seafood platters. My main goal for coming here was for oysters, oysters, oysters. Their raw oysters are listed as market price. I ordered a cup of gumbo & a dozen oysters on the half-shell. The gumbo came out HOT, and it was pretty good. The oysters are a decent size, and cocktail sauce & horseradish accompanied them. Maybe I'm slightly jealous because my friend got some oysters the size of her hand. Overall, I had a good, tasty meal. I left feeling pretty happy, until I had to pay. A dozen oysters on the half shell + cup of gumbo came out to be ~$18 before tip. I was a fool for not asking for the price of the oysters before! I really enjoyed this place, but I left contemplating if I would rather drive the 40 min to Katy/Cypress for $6.95 dozen oysters or just save my gas and time and just eat here. read more

LOVE this place! Has not failed me yet! Pros: fried oysters (perfect!) and big, fresh, tasty raw oysters (best prices in town!); great fried catfish and gumbo; pleasant staff. Awesome Po-boys are served on the most excellent french bread-- crusty outside, soft but substantial inside; sports on TV; relaxed atmosphere. Fried shrimp is good too, but I'm an oyster-loving gal! Not fancy dining, if that is what you want, go to Goode or Pappadeux. This is Gulf Seafood, plain and simple. The Gumbo is legit, lots of shrimp and seafood. The fried shrimp is some of the best around, jumbo is jumbo. I love the oysters, and love the peel and eat gulf shrimp with a Modelo or XX's and a cold mug. The broiled tilapia was excellent and well. It's a boat shaped place, nothing super fancy. Great local spot for seafood! What i love the most is the fact they don't overcharge for seafood, it's very reasonable. I work about 1.5 miles away so it's very convenient to eat here. I would recommend their seafood gumbo and raw oysters for starters. For the entree's go with a dinner option. Fried shrimp and catfish is awesome, as well as their broiled/blackened tilapia! Went into Capt Bennys Murphy Rd location, and bought 2 catfish and shimp orders, had them add oysters to 1 of the orders. Wow what a let down, the catfish was not fresh very fishy tasting and the oysters tasted like paste. When I brought this to managers attention after getting home with the food. He (mgr. John) claimed that the catfish and oysters were all fresh and that the oysters had been shucked that morning. Ive lived on the Gulf Coast for 60 yrs and I know FRESH SEAFOOD when I taste it and when Im not tasting it. I felt insulted when he (Mgr. John) told tell me that the seafood was fresh when obviously it was not. He offered to replace 1 of the catfish orders, wow what a gracious offer how can I possibly resist. Im gonna give Capt Benny's Murphy Rd location a break, maybe after the pandemic and they get rid of that OLD FISH they have stocked piled. read more

I've been coming to this location with my husband for quite some time now, always had great and fast service indoors until we decided to sit outside and had a different server helping us; he asked for our ID's and my husband showed him his passport and the server tells us he cannot serve him because they DONT ACCEPT PASSPORT AS A FORM OF ID . I got really upset and asked to speak to a manager and the manager was another ignorant one that told us the same thing ! I am a server myself and there shouldn't be no place that doesn't accept a passport ! That literally ruined my whole night and I am extremely disappointed by his location! I had a friend who ate here for years introduce me to "the boat", and I ordered the stuffed jumbo shrimp plate... he had never tried them before and fell in love. I make it around Houston alot for work and I always mapquest where the nearest Benny's is before lunch cause I KNOW I will want to grab a dozen oysters and the special of the week. The jumbo shrimp are fantastic if you can get them on a specia. On the regular menu the broiled seafood platter is a must and the hush puppies are awesome. Every platter comes with ALOT of food and a variety of sides including fries, garlic toast, hush puppies, seasoned seafood rice, etc... you will not leave hungry. Its already super inexpensive but if you are a girl you can probably bring a friend a share an appetizer and entree and still be stuffed. Happy hour is the best time to go cause almost everything is a "buck-off" and the micheladas are only 50 cents on the price of your beer. YUM! read more

My family and I were excited to eat here on account of the 3+ star review but upon walking on the premises, we were already disappointed. We walked through the entire establishment unsure of whether the waitresses would take our order or if we needed to order inside. Not a single employee helped and just stared on. It took far too long for the gossiping waitresses to head over. We ordered waters and two dozen oysters. Being an oyster bar, we figured they would be delicious. Boy were we wrong. Not only did it take a half hour to get our oysters, they were poorly shucked and didn't taste great. They were mediocre at best. We decided to leave at this point because we weren't looking to have sub-par food at great food prices or spend the entire night waiting. We will never be returning to Benny's nor will we ever recommend it to even our worst enemy. read more

Lots of fried food to choose from in particular on their menu. My niece and I shared gumbo, fried shrimp, and fried crab fingers. Nothing was awesome, but it was all decent too. I didn't like that all the chairs indoors were bar stools thus making me have to sit in a funny way to make sure my niece could stay atop hers. read more

I have to agree with another reviewer and say that the food was on the bland side. I searched yelp for a good place to get some fried shrimp (personal request from my 3 y.o.) and decided on Captain Benny's. The service was great, cute boat shaped restaurant, but the food eh-s'awright. I had the shrimp po' boy & I ordered the adult shrimp basket for the little one (loves shrimp). She took one bite & said "no thank you". Serving size was fine for me, if I would have ordered a shrimp basket I would have left hungry. On the plus side the hush puppies were quite tasty. Next time I will order the oysters & see how it turns out. Outdoor patio seating was a plus. read more

Visiting family in Houston and they raved about the food here. Highly recommended by them... Specifically the oysters...husband and I don't care for oysters but thought maybe the other seafood would be as good. We got there at dinner time and seated right away. Server was very nice and brought out our drinks right away. We ordered a bunch of appetizers as we were starving and they slowly started coming out one by one (total of 16 in our party) so they plates were empty as soon as they hit the table. The calamari was delicious. As well as the jalapeño wrapped shrimp. We did have to remind her several times of missing items though. She would go to the kitchen and eventually bring out the appetizers at different times. Our meals finally came out and sad to say we were highly disappointed. I ordered a shrimp poboy and it was the saddest sandwich I have ever seen. So dry, no mayo, no ketchup, no special sauce, no cheese. The shrimps were very few, very dry and no seasons to them. Husband got the flounder and same thing, dry and zero seasoning. I wouldn't recommend it or return. read more
