Friends recommended CarMax to me because they've had good experience with the company. They felt confident that they were getting a quality car at a good price. So I thought I would give it a try when looking to purchase a Honda CR-V. And if I hadn't look any further than CarMax Ontario then I would have been satisfied--not happy, just satisfied--but by extending my search another 30 miles or so, I discovered that there are better and cheaper ways to get what I wanted. That made me happy. I was surprised when I walked into the CarMax office and greeted by, "Why are you here?" I expected a happy-to-see-you-how-can-I-help-you kind of response. I was not expecting to be put on the defense. Maybe the sales person was thinking I was just another lookie-loo, but nevertheless, I expected better as a prospective customer. We went to his office/cubicle-type space in their noisy sales area with kids running around screaming and chairs screeching across the floor nearby. The environment was full of distractions, so not conducive to a good business transaction for me; I wasn't in a hurry, but I did want to get through the process as quickly as possible. I told him I was a solid buyer, exactly what I was looking for--year, make, model, color, and what I was willing to pay. I didn't even want to test-drive until I could see what they could offer. He slowly plugged the information into the computer, and I have to say, it was painful to watch as he struggled to type one finger at a time, and re-enter it again and again because it timed out or their system had to be refreshed. Ultimately, because there's no wiggle room in pricing at CarMax, their interest rates are high, there was no guarantee that they wouldn't give me more than $50 for my trade-in, it was hot and even though I asked for water a few times but he kept forgetting to get it, I was pretty worn out, I left without buying a car. A few days later I bought an upgraded model elsewhere for less, and at dealership who could process paperwork efficiently. So my advice is, allow plenty of time to research your options, know what you want and can afford, and recognize that buying a car is not a quick process even if your salesperson is efficient. CarMax might be the right place for you--as it was for my friends--it just wasn't for me. read more

I have purchased two cars from Carmax in recent months. The first time was at Carmax in Vallejo and most recently was at Carmax in Pleasant Hill. Purchasing is very easily done. Nothing to hide and the sales team works well together and with their clients. I want to give a shout out to Nelson in Pleasant Hill. Came into look and test drive a vehicle, already having a loan through my bank, once I told Vik that information and wanted to NOT run our credit his demeanor completely changed and wanted nothing to do with us. He grew agitated and when we wished to test drive the car, he was shocked that we wanted to test drive the vehicle before purchasing. He mentioned he had two appointments show up and said "but im with you guys" in a rushed tone. He could have just passed us on to another salesman. Once he had pulled up the car for us, he told us there were lights on the dash...they were the "i" for information and a tire pressure light. He said he didn't feel safe giving it to us to drive. I tried explaining what it was and if they can add air and he cut me off and said they need to "inspect it." I feel that he took air out of the tire for the light to come on so he could go to his other appointments and waste our time. Vik B. is an extremely unprofessional and dismissive salesman! If you ever go to the Ontario location, you need to do a little research yourself because for a sales person that tells you, he's been there 10 years, he basically missed the mark!!! When it came to the appraisal/trade-in of a vehicle that we had, the sales person & the back office needs to be re-educated on Lease 101! Don't tell me that you have been there that long & didn't know the difference between a buyout versus residual value! It's basic math, not rocket science! It makes you look like an idiot & unprofessional! And he had really bad follow-up skills. This is really a bad reflection of Carmax!! We have already purchased two vehicles here so we are not new to this, but three certainly was not the charm! So disappointed with this experience, I don't think think I could ever go back! Not even an acknowledgement or apology for the miscommunication & misinformation from management! But what can you expect when it's like being treated like cattle! Get them in & get them out! Started out with Carmax just wanting to get my 2013 Honda Civic appraised and see what happened from there. Was immediately connected with sales consultant Gabriel Sandoval. Gabriel was truly awesome to work with. From the very beginning he was approachable and polite. He kept me updated at every step of the appraisal process. I felt Carmax's offer on my car was low compared to what KBB.com had shown me, so I had the car appraised at a couple other dealerships. The other dealerships came in with even lower offers and their salespeople were particularly pushy, didn't listen to what I wanted, and made the process uncomfortable by telling me their manager would be mad at them if I left without buying/leasing a new car (I'm looking at you, Norm Reeves Honda of West Covina). I needed to get into a vehicle with a lower monthly payment and hadn't had any luck refinancing, so... Needless to say I came back to Carmax, and Gabriel. I never got the "used car salesman" feeling from him. He truly listened to my concerns about my credit history and what I felt I could afford, and worked with me to find the right car for my lifestyle and my budget. He never made me feel like a bad person because my credit was a little less than desirable. He answered all of my questions and addressed all of my concerns. He took the time to get to know me and my situation and came up with a solution that will work out well for me. Gabriel treated me like an actual human being, a friend, even... not like a number or a sales goal he had to reach. I never felt pressured or rushed into making a decision. I went on friday to look at the 2019 White Toyota 4Runner they have in stock right now. It looks amazing in pictures even states there are no accidents. When we looked at it we noticed some damage on the driver side back panel. So there is unreported accident damage and the salesman totally agreed there appears to be damage but there is nothing they can do about the price. I just hope someone notices the damage and they don't try to rip off someone. Who knows what kind of longterm damage it could have. I understand that CarMax doesn't budge on pricing but that's kind of ridiculous. read more

Someone had told me that CarMax buys your used car and gives you cash for it. So I came in one day to see how much they are willing to give me for my car. The process was pretty easy and straightforward, I sat in the waiting room for about 30min while a bunch of different people went out to my car and looked at it, drove it, inspected it. After that I got a paper with a number on it and was told that I have 7 days to bring it back to receive that amount. Now, I did look at Kelley Blue Book and even for fair condition, their amount was several thousand lower than the KBB value. A few days later I took it to another place in Orange county and this other dealership offered me $2000 more. What does that tell you? read more

I had a horrible experience here! I found a car on the Carmax website and it was located in Oxnard so I had it moved to the Carmax in Ontario because it's closer to me. I test drove the car, a BMW 320i, & I was ready to take it home. We got started on the paperwork, but I wasn't able to take the car home that night because I had to go to my bank to get the check for the loan but it was closed by then. We told the associate, Will, that we would be back in the morning to finish the paperwork to buy the car. Next morning we go to the bank, pick up the check, get to Carmax 30mins after it opens and I was told that the car we did all that work for, was SOLD. I was in disbelief. I called at 1pm to make an appointment for an appraisal. Asked for 3pm, they gave me 4:30pm. Showed up at 4:25. Took my name and saw it would be about 10 mins. (Not a problem) they called my cell at 4:45 and said 8 people were ahead of me and it would be another hour to an hour an a half. What the hell was making the appointment for?!!? Came from Sacramento to Ontario to purchase a vehicle, well turns out CarMax knows nothing about charging vehicle for days after with Tesla Supercharger. Even the one they said I could use wouldn't work. Customer service rep was not use to selling Teslas, but it's the companies fault for not training. I have been wanting a new car. I walked in today, it was busy (I get it, new year new taxes new money) and I checked in, put my number down and walked around. Started rolling at sedans but nothing popped for me. Christian was my sales rep and called me when he was available. We walked around and he was very kind during the whole experience. I still wasn't "sold". He had to do something and I asked to see the suv like vehicles. My family found one. It just clicked for me Christian can back and had my car appraisal ready but I asked to drive the 2016 Chevy equinox. Get took my id. Got the keys and we were off! I loved the drive. He was very nice and knowledgeable. Got back to the facility and went over payments. My car (a 2012 Chevy impala not 100%) they couldn't accept the vehicle but that's because I didn't have it smogged. But I just wanted my car. I was approved for financing (they were busy so he let us go eat! Yay) he called me when they were ready for me to come back. I let my husband and kids leave and I finished the process with Marie or Maria (she was amazing I feel so bad not remembering her name) so down to earth and kind. I am happy with my purchase. I bought a Toyota here this weekend and began having issues with the battery right away. My experience with the cars salesman was a bit awkward since he came off a bit rude and at some point made a joke about only caring about the customer having their card to another employee in front of me. I also noticed scratches on the car and he said "you're buying a used car. All used cars have issues." I'm a bit awkward in person so I didn't say anything about it but i wasn't 100% comfortable with my interaction with him. However, I had such a pleasant experience with a girl named Ruby at the service center. She told me they unfortunately wouldn't be able to cover all the scratches but that wasn't my main concern anyway so I understood. She made sure my car was fixed right away and I got a new battery. They even filled up my gas tank and ordered me a Lyft to get home when I dropped the car off. I think if you're going to shop through carmax you need to be prepared to take it in for maintenance right away. Do not wait for the warranty to expire if you notice issues, but I mean that's common sense lol. I don't think the sales people really care if the car is in good condition and it seems that carmax waits until the customer notices issues and brings it in instead of having it ready to go as they should. Either way I'm glad I didn't have to deal with another dealership as carmax does make things pretty simple. Just know your car will probably need maintenance when you take it home. read more

The deception should be illegal. I got an online appraisal and made an appointment to come in and proceed with selling them my car. An "inspector" inspected the car and "accepted" the appraisal I received online. Since I have a lienholder, they said they needed to get a faxed pay-off amount directly from them, so I had to drive home until the next day to wait for their fax. I brought a print-out showing my online pay-off quote was 17,400. Further, I live in a different county, so it's quite a drive. So, I waited all day the next day for their call, it never came. I attempted to call them several times, but was just placed on hold. No answer. Finally, at about 5:30pm, I thought it might be less busy now and maybe I would get through. I called again and got through and was told that they did receive the pay-off from VW and that I could come in to complete the process of selling my car to them. So, I drove one hour to their office and found that the place was packed and no where close by to park. The man whom I spoke to on the phone was not there. I went to the business line and the lady looked for my pay-off. She came back to the window and told me my pay off was approximately 22,500. I asked if she was sure that was mine, because I only owed 17,400 on my vehicle. She said yes, it was correct. She explained the inflated pay-off amount by telling me that VW charges dealers more to pay-off a vehicle. I had never heard of such a thing. She's telling me that suddenly the pay-off on my loan is $5,100 more than it really is. She again explained that because they are a "dealer" the pay-off quote is higher. I said that I lived quite far and that since they knew this beforehand, they should have informed me up front that my pay-off through them was going to be much higher than what I really owe with VW credit. No one told me this, so I made 2 round trips and wasted 2 days of my time because they were not up front with me about this transaction to begin with. I think it's a nasty trick they pulled on me by wasting my time and money on this when they just could have told me that my pay-off was going to be higher than their appraised value. Why didn't you tell me to begin with? Why did you waste my time? Unbelievable. Why do this to people? read more

I came here to get an appraisal for a car. I did not realize that this was such a huge location plus there was a little bit of a wait. The staff is very efficient and will get you help quickly. The appraisal took roughly 1 hour and was fair in my opinion. Due to how busy it was no, it did take a while to finish paperwork and to get my check. There's a large waiting room with chairs and desks, but also a small waiting room in the back with coffee, water and a vending machine. They also sell cars as well as service cars. There's lots of customer parking out front and in the back. read more

Some friends recommended CarMax in Ontario when I decided I needed a newer car to replace my 16 year old vehicle. I went online and picked out the make and model I wanted, asked to have the vehicle transferred to the Ontario facility from Costa Mesa, got prequalified to purchase the vehicle and next day was contacted by Sales Consultant Bill Martinez. He informed me a few days later that the vehicle was at their location and I went down to test drive it. The purchase process was painless and fairly quick and Mr. Martinez guided me through the entire thing. My old vehicle was even taken as a trade-in, which made me very happy. This was my first vehicle purchase in 16 years and it went very well. I can recommend CarMax to anyone looking for a new car. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that a week after my purchase I needed to ask Mr. Martinez, who had given me his card, a question, I sent him an e-mail and received no response from him whatever. The extended warranty and service plan is a sight for sore eyes for sure. A 5 day return policy is unheard of. The growth of this organization is definitely a testament of the quality service that CAN BE PROVIDED depended upon the human being you end up working with and not the greater fault of CarMax. The sales rep Jorge is rude as f*ck. He was the first person to greet us when we came in and absolutely bombarded us with questions, we asked to go in to see the vehicles and we honestly felt like we were being pressed. He basically told us it would be pointless because majority of the cars had reservations... like okay?? I can't look around?? We had a reservation for another vehicle so I went to find the one and compare it with another one I was interested in, but the whole time I was there I had so much anxiety because of Jorge I was hesitant to even go back inside to ask for help because of him. While we were outside we recieved a call from him that another buyer was interested in the car I reserved. We went inside and he came up to us and I literally felt like I was being scolded by him. This was the exact reason I didn't want to tell him we were there to look at the specific vehicle because I did not want to feel pressured and he did JUST that + worse. I felt so uneasy moving forward in the process with him. I will never return to this location solely because of my experience with Jorge. This guy needs an ego check. Fabian was nice though!!! I returned the car on 6/2 and they have still not paid the car off. I called in on 6/11 and was told it should take 7-10 days for them to pay this off. I called capital one and they stated they have not received anything. I decided to call back to speak to someone who can give me more information and I am still on hold waiting to talk to someone in the business office. 3 HOURS to answer a phone I beyond ridiculous and HORRIBLE customer service!
