After ordering and downing a Dr Pepper, he asked me if he should bring back one or two gallons of it. I get it's a joke, but come on man. That's what you ordered right? A chicken burrito. Chicken and tortilla. Fuck that. The tortilla - the tortilla texture is what I would describe to be the uncanny valley between soft and hard shell tacos. It's like what you would create if you decided to toss out the benefits of hard or soft tacos and combine only the offensive textures. Lived in Gilroy for 7 years now and today was the first day we tried this place. Oh my god it's amazing. First of all, from the outside looking in it's deceiving. This is a deep yet narrow place with plenty of space to sit and eat. And it is a well-oiled machine. The person who took my takeout order is clearly a pro. She was juggling 3 customers at once and the phone and sending people on break. I swear she had 8 arms and the patience and customer service of an expert. We only waited 5 minutes for our order and it was superb. Whole family loved it. We got the carnitas a la cart option with tortillas, onion/cilantro. It was perfect. We are definitely coming back!! This place has great food but is ran by an incompetent staff of people that couldn't run a business well if their life depended on it. I waited 1 hour in a line that wasn't moving for Carnitas, why who the hell knows because this staff won't tell you anything. When asked they say the line will move again in 5 more minutes, that lasted a whole hour. When I finally got my 2 pounds of carnitas there was another line to be rung up. I threw my money down and left. You know something is good when you want to drive thirty minutes to get it. My husband was brought here by a co-worker and raved about the carnitas burritos for weeks. Finally we had a little time on a Saturday afternoon so we drove down to Gilroy. I am very happy that we did! The restaurant is in downtown Gilroy (which is pretty much a ghost-town), but this one is filled with people. We were greeted by the same waiter that some people have mentioned in their reviews. You'll know it's him when you see him. He's extremely friendly and loves to talk, which I find very inviting and friendly. It's nice to visit a restaurant where the employees care about their customers and try to establish relationships with their customers. As for the food! My god. The carnitas burrito was AMAZING. Perfect temperature, perfect proportions. It was huge - definitely big enough for two meals (for me anyway). The carnitas was perfectly cooked, it was not too dry but not fatty at all. Sometimes burritos can leave you feeling like you just ate a greasy meal and this was NOT like that at all. I felt totally fine after eating, and I can't wait to go back! This place is known for the best carnitas, people come from San Jose just to order carnitas from this place. We come here about once every one to two months for take out. The ladies ( I think they are sisters) that ring you up and take the phone orders have always been nothing but nice when I come in or call for a take out order-even when they have long lines outside and inside, they are super sweet and patient with me. Had another great dinner thanks to Carnitas in Gilroy. Ok so we couldn't decide where to grab dinner but we knew we wanted mexican food. This place usually gets passed up very easily when thinking of mexican food for dinner since we normally use them for large party orders. I'm glad we came because the food is great for the whole family. We called and placed an order and asked how much to get for a family of four. So we ordered 2 lbs, rice, beans, and it comes with salsa. Unfortunately the $48 dollar order did not come with tortillas. We didn't know that until we got home. Very upset but no worries because we have tortillas at home we can quickly warm up on the comal. Come to find out there was a cheaper bundle at carnitas we could've ordered that comes with tortillas. Go figure. Looks like we were charged for single items added to our order instead of the bundle which cost more obviously and doesn't come with tortillas. How was I supposed to eat my carnitas I asked. Ugh.... Well besides that the food and rice is excellent. The beans are not the normal frijoles. I think they are white beans. Since moving here a couple of years ago, we've been wanting to try the food at this place. Our neighbors have said great things about this restaurant's carnitas. Well, we finally had an opportunity to get their speciality and it truly did not disappoint! The restaurant itself has a very peculiar set up. If you're planning to eat inside, the restaurant is very narrow upon entering. As you move toward the rear, it opens up a bit and in the back is where they sell their carnitas "a la cart" style. They have workers behind a counter chopping up their delicious carnitas for people standing in line waiting to put in orders for party trays of all sizes. We opted for the family platter which includes one pound of carnitas, 18 tortillas and generous portions of rice and beans! They throw in salsa as well. For the price of $30, it's a very good deal. The carnitas did not disappoint! Parts of it were crispy, parts of it were tender, and all of it was soooo tasty. From previous reviews, it sounds like the in-dining service experience is something that can be hit or miss. But seriously folks, do yourselves a favor, call your order in ahead of time and take it to go. Go home, put on your favorite pair of fat pants and go to town on their food. The Gilroy Dispatch recently came out with a "Best of Gilroy" insert and Chevy's was #1 for best burrito. Now, I have nothing against Chevy's, but in a town completely FULL of authentic Mexican restaurants and taquerias, you would think a place like Carnitas Michoacan would make it somewhere on the list. Carnitas Michoacan makes the BEST burritos in Gilroy as far as I know. I've had burritos almost everywhere in Gilroy, and these bad boys are the biggest and most delicious of them all. Half of a burrito here puts me in a food coma. They aren't the cheapest you'll find in Gilroy, but at $6.25 for a huge and tasty super burrito, you really can't go wrong. They make their tortillas fresh and you can definitely taste the difference. Not only are their burritos the best, but so are their tacos. The tacos here are also really big. One to two is about all I can handle... two leaves me super full. The tacos here are very simple... 2 homemade tortillas topped with a TON of meat, onion, and cilantro. Spritz some lime on that baby and you're all set! I usually go for the carnitas and carne asada. Chicken is just ok. $1.95 each. Now, as expected by the name, their carnitas are to DIE FOR. That stuff is succulent, tender, and flavorful. If you look hungry or sad enough, they'll give you a generous sample while you're waiting for your food. The service here is pretty good. Last time I was in, they were a little backed up with orders and a waitress came over and offered my sister and I chips, salsa, plenty of carnitas, and juice while waiting for our to-go order. And we weren't even waiting that long. So, with excellent food at super reasonable prices and great service, Carnitas Michoacan is the best Mexican restaurant in Gilroy in my books. read more

Literally the closest thing I had was Super Tacqueria so going back, I knew I should definitely try one of their authentic restaurants. This was the yelpiest in Gilroy and the name had carnitas in it so I had to go here. There was a huge line indoors so I didnt know if we had to sit down ourselves or stand in line. The line was actually for to go and carnitas and orders so maybe there was a World Cup game going on and they were hosting a party. I wanted to get the big ol family platter of carnitas that came with other fixings for 15 bucks but we each did our own thing. I got a carnitas taco and my friends got the Super Burrito. It ended up being less than $20 for all of us and that included a side of guac too. The carnitas werent crispy and parts were dry so I wasnt completely thrilled with it. Maybe it was the healthier version but I just wanted some damn crips. The carne asada was actually delicious so I would definitely get that if you order. The burritos are big so you can split one with two people for sure. We ordered a side of guac for our free chips and it was all watery and didnt have chunks of avocado. I mostly used the salsa but be careful cuz it is spicy. **TIPS** 1) Get carne asada over the carnitas but both are good. 2) Skip the guac. 3) Enjoy! read more

On a scale of 1 through 10, 5 being average, I would give this place a 4. The place is located in Downtown Gilroy, not too far away from the Outlets. Downtown Gilroy is pretty dead - everyone was either at the Outlets or NOT in Gilroy. We walked in - there was no one at the front to seat people, and between us and the "counter" were their tables. We were a bit confused on whether or not we were supposed to seat ourselves - we walked to the far back and the lady just told us to seat ourselves. Lighting in the restaurant was a bit dim, which made it feel gloomy. Almost all the customers were Mexican/Hispanic, which was a clue that the place is authentic. I ordered the Carnitas Super Burrito (around $7.00) as well as the Chicken Quesadilla (around $5.00). Food took about 15 or so minutes to come. I was starving, but at least had the free chips & salsa to hold me down. Items each had a side salad to go with it. The quesadilla was OK - I'm glad it wasn't watery (usually from salsa) like a lot of other quesadillas I've had before. The burrito was big, but I'm a bit disappointed that the goods inside were a bit soggy. The soggyness made all the ingredients kind of meld together, so the tastes of the rice, beans, cheeses, etc. just kind of blended. I couldn't really tell what part of the burrito I was digging into, except for the carnitas part which was distinct. The green sauce always was a bit disappointing - it was only mildly spicy and didn't enhance the flavor of the burrito a whole lot. I picked up 8 pounds of carnitas, which was about $87.00, to take home for dinner for my family and friends and we all noticed how heavily salty these carnitas were again to the point we could not enjoy them. This happened to us before the last time I came to pick up some carnitas . It seems like these carnitas are not the best anymore which is a shame since we used to love getting carnitas from here because they were so good but not anymore.
