A charming red-bricked courtyard is hard to pass up on while dining al fresco with the sound of water streaming in the background. What more when their sandwiches and pastries are pretty darn good. 2 large pieces of buttery and flaky croissant were single-handedly devoured by my little one as I was too busy enjoying my chicken tarragon salad sandwiched in a beautiful 6" French roll that made a melodious crunchy sound as I bit into it. It's build-your-own-sandwich here so feel free to create your masterpiece as they use only good quality ingredients. For dessert, I had their cinnamon roll which I'm happy to have found raisins in them but disappointed that the pastry itself was a little dry. Perhaps I'll stick with their chocolate mousse next time as it's been tried and tested to be fantastic. The food speaks for itself, full of flavor and always fresh. With that being said, the service is lacking and the quality control is no where to be seen. The amount of chicken curry used to be 2x as much on the sandwiches, they have since cut down. Secondly, my sandwich order is wrong at least 50% of the time. I come in bi-weekly and am always surprised at how my order will be wrong. I hate to blast a business publicly but if I could ever get through to speak to a manager or a return call then I wouldn't be on here. Get your service and quality control handled. read more

The owner is so obviously (and justifiably) burned out. I wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes with the Silicone breasted Newport crowd that frequents here. First of all, I've been coming here for literally 40 years. Anyway. I've noticed over the years the service keeps degrading and the food is getting bleh. Today, an hour before closing we ordered croissant sandwiches only to be told they had no more croissants. It's not the fact they ran out of the literal staple of French food, but it represents an attitude that's getting worse. It's says a lot about a French bakery who has been doing this for over 4 decades and they can't forecast properly how many croissants to make. When will they able? After 50 years? I know. I know. First world problems. I drove 45 minutes for a memorable lunch at cest so bon and was doubly disappointed after waiting honestly over 25 minutes!!!!!!! To be told as I was handed the sandwiches - "Sorry, I told them you wanted toasted and they just wouldn't do it for me" For $64 for lunch to go for two, you'd think they would actually honor the food they have on their menu. read more

I came in today to get a baguette. There was one customer at the counter and another waiting in line. A minute after walking in, the elderly woman in line made an unpleasant face, obviously upset, and walked out. That put me in front of the line. As I stood there, there were three employees just standing in the corner to the right completely ignoring me. They were just talking to each other doing nothing. I waited a couple minutes and had enough. I just left. The place was way too many workers and they just stand there. Next time I'm in Newport Beach, I'm going to Moulin, which another reviewer recommended. PS The owner should remove the option to tip employees on the credit card receipt. Why the heck would anyone want to do that? The employees don't deserve their paycheck, much less a tip! read more

C'est si bon? C'est si okay. My friends and I came here on a rainy Saturday morning and were greeted by a long line for ordering. This place seems like a local favorite, and we ordered a few different items. The sandwiches, though a bit pricey with $11+ for 9 inches, were not too bad. They satisfied our hunger after a nice morning hike. The bread was not soggy, and I enjoyed the nice layer of sprouts and chicken tarragon. My friends enjoyed their sandwiches too. The cinnamon twist was softer than one would imagine. However, the generous amount of cinnamon makes this item a flavorful and not too spicy winner. The almond croissant, though, was disappointing. Different from other bakeries, this bakery's version was not as buttery and flakey. The croissant felt like a lazy pillow that does not have any exciting consistency. Worse, the amount of marzipan or almond paste was minimal. I felt that this item is more of a plain danish and not really an almond croissant. The place looks nice, but their restrooms were surprisingly closed due to the rainy weather. I guess I did expect more and may be spoiled from other great bakeries I have visited in other cities. read more

I came here about a decade ago with a dear friend and then it fell off my radar. It's a well known bakery in Newport Beach but it's also got a (shhhhhhh) thing about it. Today I was in the area and nearly dropped my jaw when I saw that the building had been totally renovated and there was a line out the door. They still don't do indoor seating but they have a lovely shaded patio that was perfect to sit on. I was starving and practically ordered half the menu (6" turkey sandwich on a baguette, a diet iced chai with almond milk. A raspberry croissant for my husband and a decadent mint fudge brownie with no nuts ...keep in mind this facility uses things that processes products with nuts and nut products). I get sandwiches from here ALL THE TIME. I work locally and its very convenient, but also so darn good. I'm pescatarian so I will usually get a veggie sandwich, but I have also had their tuna. Wheat baguette is my favorite kind of bread, and they have a balsamic glaze for a condiment option which just brightens the flavor of the sandwich. I'm very happy every time I eat here. One of my very favorite places to be for the last 30 years. Everything from the bakery is amazing from the cookies, croissants, cakes to the baguettes made throughout the day. Get a custom made sandwich. Everything is over the top great. All the the deli meats are the best and the curry chicken salad is another level. On a baguette, of course. Try some specialty cheeses and take home a baguette. The coffee/cappuccino is the perfect way to finish your visit. The food is always good and consistent, but I had a bad experience with a staff member. I made a mistake with my order and wanted to correct it because I was getting the sandwich for someone else. She told me to wait in line again, and then she never came back to me. I tried to share my experience with another staff member, explaining that I needed to change my order because the girl helping me had disappeared. I thought this was rude, and her behavior was also rude. Then, the original staff member came running out and started talking in a loud voice, asking what was wrong, and stating she wasn't being rude and insisting on discussing it; it was just so disruptive that everyone felt extremely uncomfortable. You could feel the tension in the air. It was embarrassing, and I asked her to please stop and she kept talking very loud saying I want to fix this right now, at that point, I said please stop that this is inappropriate . She refused to stop so they then asked to speak to the manager and then she went running over to him ahead of me to plead her case. I initially wasn't looking to complain; I just wanted to get my order straightened out. However, speaking with the manager which was like talking to a blank wall. He had the nerve to come back and tell me that she's one of the best employees he has, suggesting that what I was saying was incorrect. I told him I felt like I wasted my time. I was trying to help his business, but I don't think I will be going back. I don't want to have to deal with the wait staff again. Apparently, this isn't the first time that other customers have had negative experiences with the staff. Came here a few times after rowing practice. I usually got a scone to eat and their cappuccino to drink. Their blueberry scones are delicious. Usually when I think of scones they're dry like a biscuit, but not their scones. Their scones are crisp and crunchy, yet not dry. The blueberries are like jam inside the scone. Their cappuccinos are good, I usually add a lot of sugar. There is usually a line here in the morning, but it moves pretty fast and service is quick. Matolda (Matilda) needs to be fired. Sunday November 27th. Tiny brunette with a black tank short straight hair. 2:58 we show up to buy something out of the case. The gentlemen opened the door for us who was also a customer coming to pay and buy something easy as we talked in the parking lot at how rude this person was. We wanted to order nothing that would need to be prepared and get turned away. Not only that but this little girl was so rude to me and my friends after I raved at how nice the people are here. I don't know who raised her but she should be fired. I am in customer service and this is a terrible terrible experience. I would never hire this girl to represent my company.
