Had a good time here for a New Year's Eve dinner. The inside is beautiful, service was very attentive, and we were able to get a reservation on pretty short notice which was appreciated. We ordered the Baerng Golae for apps which was grilled shrimp in a delicate coconut crisp taco with sauce. The flavor was good but I will say that it seemed to lack a tiny bit of salt. We then got the chef's special the Ped Aob Woonsen which is a duck leg with glass noodles. Don't expect anything too saucy or robust or soup-like. The flavor on the noodles was fantastic but I thought the duck was just okay and a little bit dry. With the way the item was described on the menu, I was expecting a much bigger dish. Lastly we had the garlic ribs which were fall off the bone tender with a side of rice. The ribs were high up on the list for me but they did just taste like garlic ribs. All in all, this food was good but at the price point and with how nice the restaurant was I didn't think it was anything special. I would say that I've had food at small hole in the wall restaurants that was better or at least just as good. Other than the glass noodles, the flavor combinations here were tasty but nothing too unique. We spent $90 on a meal that really was worth about $50. Kinda pricey but authentic. I really liked the Tom Som Pla Soup. Similar to Tom Yum in its citrusy essence but on a lighter note. The herbs in it made it so good. The dish is optimal for sharing. I've been here for dine-in and for take out and it's always fantastic. They have excellent seafood dishes and everything is perfect for sharing. I find myself talking about restaurants as much as the next New York gourmand, and by far the cuisine people get the buzziest about is Thai food, to no one's surprise. You can tell a lot about someone's favorite NYC Thai restaurant is. If they say Spice, you know they have basic taste. If they say Up Thai, they have good taste but play it safe, and have likely lived in NY for a while. If they say Sappe or Sukh, you know they read Eater and will be one of the first to make a reservation at any hot and new restaurant. If they say Chalong, their taste buds are top tier, because it's one of the most consistently solid Thai restaurants in the city. The space is casual, but nice enough for any occasion-- work dinner, date, celebration. I went before they got their liquor license, but seeing all the photos of their beautiful cocktails I am very eager to return. Here's a rundown of what I ordered. Mee Pum Riang (Southern style Pad Thai)- I prefer a "wet" noodle version of Pad Thai as prepared here. The sauce clung to each strand of springy rice noodle perfectly, and I especially loved the fresh accoutrements on the dish. Sliced radish, cucumbers, beans/sprouts. A step above other pad thai dishes I've tried. Steamed fish- this piece of chilean sea bass is covered in a chili lime broth, replete with chili, garlic, mint, and pea shoot. This dish is fresh and zesty, and pairs really well with white rice. Crab curry- This dish didn't photograph very well but trust that this stew was so deeply flavorful and filled with plenty of fresh crab meat. I should've ordered more than one for the table. I may have just tried three dishes, but my mind is made up about this place. Chalong is one of the best Thai restaurants in the city in my book. Been a wanting to check out Chalong after walking past it countless times. Finally checked it out. The place is pretty. Tables are a bit tightly packed though. On the food: 1. Pomelo salad: this was hella tiny. Very few pieces of fried fish. Big chunks of pomelo. Sauce was good. But the salad felt lacking. Just waaay too small without much going on. Kinda wish there was more. 2. Steamed fish: this was good. Juicy fish. Sauce was great. For the price, would have expected more fish. 3. Goat curry: pretty good with the flaky roti on the side. Meat was tender. Not much aside from just meat and curry. 4. Vegetables; thankfully a decent serving size. Standard good. Overall, food at Chalong was alright. Servings are on the smaller side. I went to Chalong with a group of friends and we were able to order a lot of the dishes off of the menu. Overall, we were all very happy with the meal. It's definitely a step up from your usual local Thai place. We leaned seafood heavy with our choices. We got the coconut crispy shrimp, fried wings, pomelo salad, and curry puffs to start along with some dim sum. Everything was good but the standout for me was probably the shrimp which were served like tacos. For my main, my friend and I split the whole fried fish and the crab curry. Both were delicious, but the whole fried fish was huge and really hit the spot. I would highly recommend. The crab curry was good too, although I think I liked the version at Soothr better. The restaurant gets very busy and has a fun, buzzy vibe. It is a great place for a casual dinner with a group of friends. I will say that many of the dishes are quite spicy. There are so many solid Thai options around, it can be hard to narrow down your choices. Chalong stuck out to me because their items are a little different from the typical dishes you see at many Thai restaurants. We had a pretty late dinner reservation and we were seated right away. I ordered the Sator goong (shrimp, ground pork, stinky beans in a southern Thai curry paste) and this dish definitely has a lot of heat to it! I can usually tolerate spicy food pretty well but this had me sweating a little tbh. The flavors are quite intense and is on the salty side, so it pairs nicely with plain white rice. Definitely a solid option if you're looking to branch out and try something a little different from your typical pad thai/drunken noodles. read more

This is probably one of the top Thai restaurants in the city, in my opinion. Every dish I've gotten here has been amazing. I ordered the Baerng Golae (incredible!), garlic ribs, crab curry, and wok of green. The food came out quickly and was so yummy, with the perfect level of spice. For drinks, I tried the Her Honey Hand and Leonardo On The Beach. The waitress was very helpful in recommending dishes to complement our existing selection. And the interior is really polished and comfortable. There does tend to be a bit of a wait to eat here, but I was glad I waited after trying the food. I can't wait to come here again, and wish there were more locations especially in downtown Manhattan! read more

The server warned us that the crab curry would be spicy- that's when I realized we didn't have a choice in choosing our spice levels. I honestly respected that because that means they stay true to their recipe and have a sense of confidence to each dish they make. The crab curry was indeed a bit on the spicier end (a little less spicy than buldak ramen), but it was absolutely delicious. The food here is a cut above your average Thai restaurant. I only ordered a Lunch Goong Karee delivery order with tail-on shrimp, and it was very good. The shrimp were big, fresh, tasty, plentiful, and perfectly cooked. The curry sauce was well made and delicious, as was, the Jasmine rice. Oddly, it came with complementary "chicken wings", which seemed out of place, but perhaps they fancy themselves as that dreaded "fusion" restaurant. In any case, it was pretty good, too! Had dinner with a friend here last night and I'm still dreaming about the meal. We started with the Lumpu Salad, Yum Som-O, Coconut crab curry, and Kee Mao seafood. EVERYTHING was packed with spice and so much flavor. To drink we also had the biryani passion, Song Kha, and Satoon. Can't say this immediate area is known for Asian food in general, but Chalong does a solid job with Thai food. For appetizer, we got the Potato Puff Sticks, which was very good. It has a good crunch to it and went well with the sweet dipping sauce (the tiny sliced red peppers floating around obviously has a kick to them if you eat them directly). For lunch, we got the Crab Fried Rice and the Chicken Kee Mao. The fried rice sadly had some little crab shells, which was painful on bite. Think a bit more care can be put into shelling the crabs. The rice was topped with crispy green onions or something, which tasted good. The fried chicken wings that came with the lunch special were amazing. They're normal sized wings, so will seem tiny if you're used to selected bred chicken from fast food places. The ginger-based glaze was tasty and great for lunch, and the crispy rice batter reminded me of KyoChon Chicken when they existed in NY. The Kee Mao was really good. From the outside to inside, Chalong is beautiful and decorated like you're sitting in a restaurant in Thailand. There is a nice spacious bar area and lots of tables for small or large groups. I appreciate how simple the menu is. The appetizers were an indicator of how amazing the entrees were going to be. The Baerng Golae was recommended to us by the staff and I can see why! They're like tacos with curry shrimp inside and I never tasted anything so unique and yummy before. The texture and juiciness of the chicken wings was also incredible. For the entrees, we got their most popular fish dish which is the Platod. Wow! It is crispy and succulent. It's seasoned perfectly and comes with lots of scallions. The Crab Curry was spicy, but just the right amount for my tolerance and came with so much crab! They give you a perfect amount of meat in the dishes. To end the meal, we got their new dessert, the Dok Jok, which is a coconut ice cream with various toppings. It was creamy, coconut-y, and had so many textures with the crunchy and chewy toppings. I recently learned about this place because the chef (and co-owner??) is from Fish cheeks my fave restaurant in the city. We came super early for a 6pm resy but we were accommodated and seated right away! The interior is beautiful and cozy with lots of seating. We got the coconut crab curry, braised pork, and shrimp fried rice. The crab curry tastes very similar to fish cheeks, so if you're looking to satisfy that craving in Hell's Kitchen, come here!! Personally not my favorite Thai restaurant but I enjoyed how different each dish was. We got the garlic ribs, baerng golae, mee pum riang (southern pad thai), and crab curry. Even though the waiter let us know the food was spicy, in my opinion, none of the dishes were remotely spicy. The flavor is not as strong as I had hoped for all the dishes, and I felt that there was a lack of seasoning. The crab curry was not that strong and the soft shell crab was too salty. My favorite was the southern pad thai because it was creamier than your usual pad thai but the noodles did stick together. Garlic ribs and the baerng golae were alright but nothing outstanding.
