We have been eating at Chapps for about 30 + years. The burgers are ALWAYS hot and fresh and just about as good as a burger can get. Now this place is on the pricey side for a burger and they will nickel and dime you for any add on but it's still worth stopping by for a great burger from time to time. I came in slightly after the lunch rush so I don't know how busy they are but while I was there a steady stream of customers came in - a young couple, older couple, ladies out shopping, a police officer, an a few couples and singles with kids. Since finding this local burger chain tucked away in a strip mall between Ace Hardware & Hallmark, we have visited at least a half dozen times. Today, I ordered a cheeseburger for the first time. YUMMMMM! Let me acknowledge my favorite item on their menu before I go on. They make the best chili cheese dog in the area, hands down. For those of you looking for that type of guilty pleasure, they would get eight stars out of five. They also do an excellent job on two hard-to-find items - fried mushrooms (around $3) and a nice fish & chips. Their fries are hand cut with skin on, and they manage to keep them nice & thick. They also off some chicken sandwiches, a philly, and today were advertising a turkey burger. They have salads, but we have never tried one. The usual purpose of our visits here are for the burgers & dogs. I had it in mind after last night, that I would order a burger here (all I had tried previously is the chili cheese dog). I really was jonesing for a great burger, and I was not disappointed. I ordered the Mushroom & Cheese ($7.39) and added bacon. I did not ask how much they charge for bacon, and I really do not mind what ever it is. My companion ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger (also $7.39). The basic cheeseburger is a bit less expensive, if you lean that way. All the burgers come with your choice of mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled onions, and your choice of cheese (American, Swiss, Cheddar, or Pepper Jack). My burger came out hot & juicy, on a grilled wheat bun that was substantial enough to hold up to the Nolan Ryan Beef 1/2 lb burger. The bun had a perfect tasting to it. The meat was lightly seasoned, but bursting with a fresh flavor. The bacon was cooked perfectly, and the mushrooms were perfectly sautéed. My companions burger came out equally juicy, though the kitchen forgot the bacon. This was quickly remedied with a smile and apology. We also ordered the cheddar fries. Very tasty! As to other comments about cleanliness, I have never seen any residual dirt indicative of neglect. They usually have one or two front line employees who take orders, run food, and bus the tables. If you are too pretentious to understand that, go to Five Guys or Smashburger. See how that works for you. I just found out this place is from the same people who brought us the greatest burger joint in the Metroplex - Jim's on Division Street. If I had two requests - one would be to ditch the Heinz catsup in favor of Hunts or something generic & the second would be to find a way to bring the Nolan Ryan brisket sausage dog to their menu. read more

There are several excellent burger places in south arlington. I go to Chapp's because it's 1. Delicious and 2. Close to my house. Details: the burgers seem hand packed and the burger meat is delicious. It's a step above any burger meat you'll find in a grocery store. They are browned nicely on the outside and just done enough on the inside. The lettuce is fresh and crispy. The fries are fresh cut and they keep the fryer clean and the oil fresh. Chapps used to be my fave burger joint but the last two times it's been like eating a hockey puck. I switched from baby chapps, thinking it was the thin 1/4 pound causing the dry burger, to a classic burger but it was just as dry! On the positive side the fries are delicious. read more

Chapps makes a good burger, probably because they start with great, fresh beef. THANKS NOLAN RYAN (man he has given Texas a lot!). Their fries are always pretty good. The cost is a bit more than some burger joints but again, they start with quality beef. Here are a few things I always think though - their patties are thick so the burgers are a bit smaller looking. To make things worse they always seem stingy on the fries and especially if you order onion rings. To make that even worse they serve it on a really large platter that makes each little piece look small and lonely. Maybe smaller plates for mental reasons and to make it look more. The presentation is as boring as it gets. Also, I have always wished they would add some appeal or fun to the menu - it gets very boring. Like seasonal burger selections with different ingredients. This was my first time eating here, and the reviews are well deserved. I had the 1984 and the Cajun Fries. The burger was cooked to perfection, and the fries were the perfect mix of crunchy, soft, and spicy. Great with a side of ranch. The only thing I would mention is that while the Avacado slices on the burger were delicious, I found myself wanting more. The hard cheddar cheese can leave even a juicy burger feeling a little dry. The staff here was very friendly, and the food is decent, but I didn't get excited like I was hoping to. I had the Baby Chapps because a 1/2 lb burger is too big for me, but apparently a 1/4 pound isn't big enough because I was still hungry. The fries are the 'fresh cut' kind, which I know are very popular but they're usually too starchy for me. The ones that were overcooked to me tasted better than the others. Chapp's has a great burger that's for sure. The patty is compact and pretty deceiving to the eye of how much food it really is. The buns are toasted but not overly done. I get everything on my burger which includes lettuce, tomatoes, mustard, mayo, and pickles. I got sweet potato fries as my side but was extremely disappointed. They were so bland and I could barely eat any of them. They also messed up my order and brought me the wrong one. I told the waitress but they brushed it aside and didn't offer to redo it even though I would have said kept the other one. Chapps.. ya almost nailed it, partner, ya really did. First off, burger dimensions are a huge factor. I don't just mean the overall size of the burger, but more ratio based. See below for the two primary ratios I look for - *Burger:Bun - does the burger meet the edges of the bun nicely? If the bun hangs OVER the burger, this is a no go. If the burger is atrociously large and hangs WAY outside the bun, this is a deal breaker. Give me quality, not quantity. *Burger Height:Mouth Height - this is exceptionally important for double cheeseburgers. When the eater opens his/her mouth, does the burger fill the mouth completely? It shouldn't be as easy as a White Castle, but it also shouldn't be as hard to the point where you're contorting your burger in multiple different ways just to fit it in your mouth. In both of the ratios, above, Chapps nailed it! I couldn't ask for better performance, here. Moving on to meat quality- stellar. Juicy and fatty beef, but the grease wasn't dripping like a fire hose as I sunk my teeth into it. Ok Chapps, here's where it hurts- the cheese man, the cheese! And I'm mainly referencing the presentation.. everybody knows the cheese should be ever so slightly melted atop the beef. I had a room temperature piece of cheese sitting on my burger. Did it melt as I started to eat, well sure, but that's not the point! Overall score - 4.3 Chapps, keep up the great work.
