Chart House is a Portland institution, and even though it is owned by a large corporate chain so the menu is very corporate, the space has one of the most stunning views of the city. I will say the food is consistent and solid with some standouts like their kimchi shrimp appetizer and their salads. Happy Hour is the best opportunity to enjoy the view, the food and libations. Valet parking is nice but you can also park down the street and walk in. Service is usually also consistent and good. A solid place for a beautiful view and a nice experience. read more

The food was very flavorful, even if it was on the warm side and not hot. The waitress must have been new, I thought clam chowder was just automatically served with oyster crackers and an offer of cracked black pepper. And even when the crackers were requested they didn't arrive until at least 5 minutes later. We were there early 11:30am Saturday and the place wasn't crowded, so I'm thinking it might have been a staffing issue. I only saw 1 food runner. The best thing about the Chart House is the view. It's a good place for special occasions. Our server, Jeremy, was excellent. Some of the food was mediocre. Specifically, the Caesar salad was disappointing and so was the roasted chicken. The chicken was so small we wondered if it was a Cornish Game Hen although the menu did not say that. Went to Chart House for a business dinner this week, and the food and service were amazing as always. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get photos of the entire meal because I didn't think my management team would appreciate me whipping out my phone to take pictures of each new dish as it was served, but it was definitely still review worthy. I made our reservations using Open Table, which was a breeze. I arrived a little early, before anyone else was there, so I went downstairs to the lounge/bar area to grab a drink and relax for a few minutes before heading up to our table. Note - it was 5:30 on a Thursday night during happy hour, and I was still able to easily find a chair and be served at the bar. I ordered the Monarch Margarita which was quite good, although a little on the sour side, but I enjoy that. Afterward, I went back upstairs and was sat right away. We had a table with an amazing view of Mt Hood, where we were able to watch the sun go down throughout our meal, which was a lovely addition. Allison was our server that evening, and she was a delight. She was attentive, engaging and very well-informed about the menu which we appreciated. She also saved me from accidentally ordering a drink I would not have enjoyed by letting me know upfront that it was pretty sweet, so I just ordered something else instead. Thank you, Allison! We went with multiple appetizers for the table: the Shrimp, Crab, Avocado and Mango Stack, the Crunchy Coconut Shrimp and the Calamari. But I have to say that the Calamari took the cake. Allison warned us that it was a large portion, but when I tell you that the serving was big, it was BIG! I only wish I had a picture to show you. We had 6 people eating off of it, and still didn't finish the entire thing. But that's okay - hello, leftovers! As for my dinner, I had the King Salmon with Potato Leek Cakes, which was divine. In these uncertain Covid days, if it turns out this is the last Portland Dining Month venture, I won't look back with regret. We got there early and enjoyed the happy hour in the bar. The lettuce wraps were fine however it was four discreet wraps vs the more traditional lettuce leaves and a bunch of filling that you make your own. The fried artichokes were very tasty. Add in 3 glasses of wine, a gin+tonic, martini and we were out the door for about $40 before tip. Going upstairs for dinner, one had the Mahi Mahi and the rest of us went for steak and shrimp. The opening salad was really creative, tasty and very well received. The fish was the right temperature and texture, perhaps not as large a portion as you might expect. The steak and shrimp, really presented well. A nice combination of tastes and textures. It wasn't a particularly special cut off meat however for $33/person, it was very tasty. Came here on a Sunny afternoon and were seated at the perfect spot -right with the best view and the most secluded seats was the sunlight falling directly on our table . My heart was full even without tasting the food .From its vantage point at the top of historic Terwilliger Boulevard, Chart House boasts some of the city's best views -Overlooking the gorgeous Willamette River and offering views of Mt. We decided to splurge a little bit and go out for a nice dinner tonight and after checking things out on Yelp decided to go back to the Chart House. It's been years since we have been there so tonight was the right time. The place is very nice inside, beautiful tables and set ups and a nice entrance, the valet parking is a real plus. We were seated very quickly at a small table right next to the window with a great view. Our waitress, Jolene, was quick and efficient and very friendly and helpful. We each had a glass of wine, they have a very large selection and at mostly reasonable prices. The food menu is large and varied with good descriptions of what to expect and the preparations involved. My wife went for the small, 14oz, Prime Rib and I had the King Salmon, both were very good and well prepared, the Salmon was a good sized portion too. They come with tasty mashed potatoes, though the flavor was good I personally don't like skins included in the mash, I wish they would peal them all the way. The skins were kind of slimy and not easy to chew but that may just me may taste. They really talk up the Molten Lava Chocolate cake so we tried it but here is where they failed a bit. The cake had a really hard texture and was actually hard to cut. Not enough Lava inside for me but it comes with a scoop of vanilla ice creme which we finished. We left the bottom of the cake however. All in all a very nice experience with a great view, we will have to go back again some time. read more

Happy Hour here is the bomb! Mouthwatering food options like prime sliders, shrimp tacos, calamari, and ahi bites, served in large portions between $4-$8. Their HH beverage list is just as impressive. $7 cocktails, $5 well drinks, $6 wines and $5 drafts. Now that makes me happy! But there's more! Their HH goes a full hour longer than most, from 4-7:00. That one additional hour makes all the difference! There is a large bar downstairs (careful, the stairs are steep) with several tables in front of the bar facing the Willamette Riverand Mt. Hood. What a view! On the other side of the room is a beautiful fireplace with comfy leather chairs and coffee tables. Our group ordered several items: - The fried artichoke hearts were crisp on the outside and so tender inside, served with a lemon aioli, they were a standout. - The prime sliders were my favorite, and the top rated by the group. Three sliders piled high with tender prime beef sliced super thin, topped with melted cheese and flavorful carmelized onions, served with au jus. I'll come back just for these! At $7 it's a steal and a meal. - The tacos came in a double soft tortilla shell and were stuffed with fish or shrimp, cabbage, jack cheese and Pico de Gallo, a perfect combo of flavors and textures - The ahi was presented on fried wontons and topped with pickled ginger and wasabi. Yum! Next time, in addition to the sliders, I want to try the kim chee calamari and the firecracker shrimp tossed in a spicy kim chee sauce. Sounds like an interesting and perfect compliment. Let's face it, Happy Hour is where Chart House excels, just like the other restaurants in the Landry portfolio - McCormicks at Riverside Marina, Jakes, Jakes Grill, and Morton's. Chart House is now one of my HH faves and since it's a quick and beautiful drive from my condo, I plan on becoming a regular! The reason I am only giving 4 stars is because I have to balance the HH with the lunch and dinners I have had over the years. Once again, like the other restaurants in the Landry portfolio, the meals fall short. It's a hit or miss. I've had fabulous pasta with shrimp scampi and mediocre halibut. Delicious Prime Rib and nothing to rave about chicken. These are high end restaurants so the expectations are just as high. They are destination restaurants reserved for special occasions. I strongly believe the food should be as good as the view. It should never be an either or. The answer is always both. For this reason, I have to drop a star. Upon arrival we didn't see anything so outstanding on the menu but ordered a $75 bottle of wine and it came to our table with a screw top...pretty silly for how much we spent, clearly very marked up. I ordered the salmon which was overcooked and it came with potatoes that were somehow undercooked and hard. My boyfriend got the sea bass and it tasted like it had been previously freezer burned. We held a 90th birthday party with17 guests at Chart House in May. 3 main issues: the space, food and communication. The space they gave turned out to be about 50% of what was promised. We were to have an area set up with appetizers and wine so people could mingle. That space was given to other customers so we had to crowd around the table. We had people fly from New Zealand, Alaska and Virginia to attend. Very disappointing. Food: The food was only acceptable. The salad was ungarnished and plopped on the plate. My baked mahi was two strips of white mahi on white sauce with a pyramid of white rice on a white plate. Not appetizing. No one was impressed with the food. Fnally, comminucation with marketing was duffucult. I often had to call multiple times and wait for a couple days to hear back. I sent a note after the dinner with these concerns but got no response. If your expectations are gourmet and innovative, forget about it. Yet, the supper club ambience and old school kitchen at The Chart House add a certain nostalgia to Portland's dining scene. Sometimes "tried and true" conquer "experimental and bad." My drinks were poured strong and festive. The Caesar salad tasted great, and my prime rib was prepared just the way I like it. Service was professional, but let us create the frivolity. They stayed on the periphery which was ideal for our table. Chart House was a fitting end to a fabulous birthday holiday in Portland. I loved it, and this gourmand understands all restaurants fit a certain niche. The only requirement is to serve good food. Chart House is so good. We came here for Mother's Day and then also Father's Day. The food was excellent both times. We had the fish twice, and they are so crunchy and perfect with the remoulade. Coconut Shrimp was perfectly crunchy, and the different dipping sauces were great too. The Avocado, mango, shrimp, and crab stack was so tasty.
