There were nine if us here for my brother in laws birthday Brunch on 2/1/15. When we pulled up in our vehicle the valet person asked the driver if we we here for the big party. We answered that yes we were here for a party but not so big. Another valet person held the door open and immediately directed us downstairs to the party. Well, I thought wow how did they know we were here for the birthday party. We proceeded to go downstairs and there was a birthday party full of Asians all right. But it wasn't the right party. What happened was that the two valets and the two hostesses assumed that since we were Asian we must all be in the same party. Really? I pointed out to the hostess that she assumed since we were Asian we must have been part of the same party. Chart House had us laughing but really we are disgusted with this behavior. After six months or longer since our last Chart House experience, we wandered in after a nice walk along Terwilliger. Enjoying the view in the downstairs bar area from a table along the window, I wondered why it had been so long since I had last been in. Then we sat waiting and waiting and waiting for a server and I began to remember why. Eventually the bartender came over, and we ordered a couple drinks and the calamari from the happy hour menu. After another wait, our food and drinks finally arrived. Mediocre calamari with sweet and sour sauce or marinara when a spicy aioli or other sauce would have been much preferred. But by the time the bartender returned to see how we were doing, our drinks were finished and we were ready to go. We got the check, and much to our chagrin - the $5 happy hour calamari was actually $12.99. Yikes! Overpriced at $5, a travesty at $12.99. I explained the problem to the bartender, who responded that we had arrived after happy hour had ended. We explained that we thought it was still happy hour since the only menu on the table was the happy hour menu, and we had ordered specifically from the happy hour menu, even pointing to items directly on the menu as we ordered. He explained that in fact, he had taken the happy hour menu from us when we ordered, which apparently should have informed us that happy hour was over. However, in my experience, it is common practice for servers to take menus from customers who place orders, although I had found it rude how he had wrestled the menu out of my grasp after I ordered. Anyway, we were given two coupons for future 1/2 price happy hour appetizers in recompense. They will never be used. Sorry, Chart House, you failed again. read more

We went the day after Valentine's Day for happy hour. We got there right when it opened and we were one of the first to be seated after 50 minutes of waiting for our food and everyone else getting there food before us I went to find our waitress and asked how much longer it would be. She said she would check on it and it came out soon after. We asked for waters as well and that was forgotten until the waitress came back and we needed to remind her that we never received those as well. Horrible service . We rarely saw our waitress and like I mentioned above we waited 50 minutes for food while everyone else was served. No acknowledgment or apology from the waitress for our forgotten order. I was in tonight to get a to go order. Again parking is the downfall of this gem. They need a much larger team of parking aids. This backup they have would never happen if they had several parking aids. The first face to the place is the valet. This person told me I should park on the street and walk to the building for a to go order. When I decided to call a manager he kept trying to open my door so I backed out. With the wet roads from constant rain my bare tires spun. I guess that scared the guy. Anyways, they did offer me a free meal and I appreciate that a lot but this parking issue has to be addressed. They need a small parking garage or a complete rebuild with parking under the restaurant or above. I do love this place a lot (not the people). I am a hard customer to please, I know this. I expect perfection and Im willing to pay more to get it. What upsets me as well is that while the manager helped me she also pointed out how many times they have had to fix things for me. What I can say to that is that if everything was on point with the help they wouldnt be dealing with me at all. I gave restaurants I go to that never hear from me and thats because they do a wonderful job. I cant imagine talking to any of my customers like she spoke to me. My customers wouldn't let that fly at all. I just had a customer today that decided not to use our services because they didnt like the look of our building. No joke, and she is surprised that I complain when valet is rude. I guess people like my wife just pay for things in life and dont say anything when they aren't satisfied but I am extremely outspoken on customer service. I dont know that I should feel bad for that but I should maybe let some things slide. Tonight was hard for them as it was a very busy holiday. I want to be ckear that food is always on point except once in 2010. The view is amazing and the attention to detail that the corporate owners have is great. People will always be a problem. The Chart House razzle dazzles you with its ambience, decor, and great views of the city. You definitely feel a bit exclusive eating here. The food, on the other hand, leaves a bit left to be desired. It's not that the food is bad, it just doesn't live up to the lofty standards set by the other parts of the restaurant. Impressive view, great decor everything else is not worth the prices. Half star for service, 1 full star for décor/view, zero for value, half star for food (presentation, taste, quality). A fine dining establishment with ok service had to wait 35 minutes past my reservation time to get a table. I had a full potato in my mash potatoes and the waiter just laughed, and cleared the plate. You also HAVE to valet your car which is annoying that it's forced not an option but the car guys do a good job. Lets' start with what is done right. The Decor and The View are top tier and rival some other epics like Portland city grill. The clean and glamorous feeling makes this a great place for an impressive date or other special occasions. Some of the food was cooked well and tasted good, the calamari was tender and not rubbery however the presentation was subpar for a 13 dollar app. The fried asparagus was a nice take on a different dish but the size of the asparagus and the asparagus being undercooked hurt the dish 9 dollar dish. The cocktails and wine list are very good and the wine was priced well, cocktails were a little bland and for 13 dollars having a glass full of ice two times was a bit insulting. I went with a group to taste as much as possible and got the scallops, the swordfish, the chicken, the beef medallions and the filet mignon (along with apps, salad and clam chowder). The items were all cooked enough however for the price (26, 28, 20, 25, 31) the cheaper items were cooked with more skill sadly. I am not usually this critical about the cooking or quality of the food but when paying this much you should demand more. The filet mignon was disappointing at best and the mash potatoes were good until I found a full potato hidden (like I wouldn't notice?) when brought up to waiter he laughed and cleared my plate. Back to the steak, it was not a classic cut, it was oddly shaped, not the iconic circle but more of a prime rib shape. The filet mignon looked like it sat under a heat lamp too long just an insult for the price. If it was a 20 dollar steak it would have been marginal. Over all the rest of the dishes suffered from the same issue which seemed like the kitchen either didn't care because Portland is willing to fork over to much money for a pretty view or the kitchen is getting lazy. The only exception to the lazy cooking was the medallions which were juicy and cooked correctly with a decent yet dull presentation. The presentation all around was very mom and pop restaurant feel. I would not recommend The Chart House for food, Southpark downtown and Jake's are better for the same price. Now, if you need a view and are willing to over pay for a lazy piece of seafood or steak than it is my favorite place for the view. Happy hour here would be perfect if you didn't HAVE to valet your car, still the valet guys are good and Happy Hour here is a good way to enjoy the Chart House without spending a lot. read more

The reviews were correct read them, read them all. It all started with cocktail hour prior to our dinner; bartender was closer to rude than helpful. We had to sit at the bar since all the widow seating was taken, luckily a seat became available when we told her she demanded we close out with her first. I waited at the bar to close my tab when I heard her complain to a coworker that she had to walk over to the window seat to deliver our drinks only to turn around and see I was still sitting there at her request waiting for the check. We moved to dinner; first course... wet almost translucent salads, maybe previously frozen lettuce? Next lobster bisque-not bad at all. Next prime rib a little chewy but decent for prime rib considering the cooking method. The New York strips my friends had seemed better, side fat could have been lightly seared for looks and pull out some flavor. Another friend had the shrimp trio looked like it should only cost $15 since it had coconut shrimp-gross! Possibly frozen? I did surf and turf and my shrimp were over cooked and had that rubber texture; I would substitute large prawn for the tiny shrimp if I was cooking. Back to the steak plate, the mashed potatoes were cold with seemingly store bought sweet potato chips stuck in it. My bro got the scallops, cooked decent not an adequate sear for looks but flavored pretty well; about the size of a Kennedy half dollar, I would have got bigger. His side was the ratatouille, with dude...canned tomatoes! This was the last draw! They had a molten lava cake for dessert, uh is this the late 80s, early 90s? Didn't try it. We did close the dinner with a nice banana cake though...moist with fresh banana and an excellent sweet cream filling. Later I found out my friend brought it in from QFC. Ha! There are many nice restaurants in Portland, save money and eat better food and more pallet challenging dishes. You can get this same view by parking your car or bike and packing a lunch. All in all, if you are into traditional American dining, losing taste buds, have money to blow, and prefer to pay top dollar just because you can? You will love Chart House. Otherwise, think twice. This is one of my favorites in the Portland area. The dinners are very good, but cuisine (though pivotal) isn't the totality of a fine dining experience. I will avoid superlatives because that's a subjective matter. I can tell you that our seafood dinners were a delight, the wine list offered a selection from the best of the Northwest, the service was professional and very attentive, and the view of the Willamette reminded me to return with our guests who visit from other corners of the nation. Portland is an attractive city, especially from viewpoints like this. There are other Chart House restaurants, of course, and they normally reflect the priorities of their management. The atmosphere of other Chart Houses I've visited in southern California was more casual. This one is a bit more genteel; there were no denim jeans or Hawaiian shirts near my table. The dinners and wines are not inexpensive; however, when it's an "occasion" such as an anniversary or birthday, this restaurant is very near the top of my list. For the best this restaurant can offer, plan ahead, make an early (midweek) dinner reservation, request a view table, and look to the east as the shadows of the hills cast by the setting sun creep over the city. We enjoyed it enough to return and to recommend it to others. read more

Went last night for a birthday celebration. My family has been eating at Chart House for 10+ years. While we have been frequenting less (honestly some of us have felt over the last few years the quality has gone down),last night reminded me why we love to go to the Chart House. And now I'm just wondering if we had some bad luck. Everyone who ordered soups and salads ate every bite. The shrimp cocktail display is magnificent. Each persons meal was happily gobbled up or eagerly boxed up for seconds later. The lava cake cannot be compared to anything else around (you might as well order them right when you sit down...they need time to prepare and no matter how full you think youll be if you don't try this delicious goodness you will truly be disappointed with yourself later). Amazing, delicious, and the view was beautiful. Our server was attentive, kind, enthusiastic, and did a great job doing her job! She "upselled" flawlessly, her demeanor convinces you to want more and you never regret it. As a server I am typically critical of servers (especially at spendier establishments). Thumbs up to her. We had an amazing experience for dinner on Monday night. Our table was next to the window downstairs and the view was beautiful. Our waiter, Peter, knew the menu and made suggestions that were spot on. He was cheerful and seemed to love what he does. Yes, some items took a little while but Peter was attentive and made sure we had what we needed during the wait. UPDATE as of 10/12/10 So...Chart House. You are officially OFF of my non-appathetic consumer "shit list" based upon the responsiveness of your Sr. Management. It is REFRESHING when at least a business' Sr. Mgmnt pays attn to customers. The had on their web site a ph # to their exec office and RETURNED the call AND were grateful to hearing the input (albeit neagative) from a lost customer. Outrageously poor service and ARROGANT attitude all the way up including the manager on duty on Sun 10/10/10. Parking in "Chart House" lot, across the street, Valet attendant upon walking into the restaurant got snotty saying ONLY employee parking where I and a friend parked YET absolutely no signs posted (I have pictures). Escalated to manager who said "if you keep swearing..." yet no swear words were ever used. When asked what I said he couldn't elaborate. Typical arrogant way to redirect the problem. Then manager said "MUST use valet or leave" to which I left as did my date and another friend. Upon leaving the manager's smug comment "Have a nice day" added a nice touch! I could swear that it was followed by "a__hole" barely audible as the final insult !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT PATRONIZE. The arrogance runs rampant. Perhaps they have too much business but they don't have mine anymore. EVER. Interesting approach since they only had a handful of people in the establishment. Awful service! I reserved a window spot for my boyfriend's birthday dinner, in which it was just us two. We were told our table was ready, but then were left waiting for over an hour. When we finally asked about the table the hostess told us she did not know when it would be ready and said she'd ask someone...we never heard the answer to the question. Our table was finally moved from another area and squeezed in between two others. When we were finally seated our waiter told us he did not have time for us to ask questions about the menu and when my boyfriend told him we were not ready to order he responded with "fine then!" and walked away. He then returned less than a minute later and asked "ready yet?", so we just ordered. By the time our food got to the table we still had no water or silverware, which took about 5 minutes to get to the table. The table next to us had a problem with the server as well, and asked him what his problem was, which he responded with an inappropriate and sarcastic comment, and they got up and left. After dinner was done we were ordering dessert to share and when my boyfriend asked which dessert I thought looked good, the waiter responded with "why does the girl have to decide for you?" Overall, the experience was awful. The hostesses were not very polite and the server was horrendous. I left no tip and contacted management with a copy of the receipt and the server's name. They told me they would refund the dinner and call me back for more information...both never happened. When I called again, they said they had no record of our service at their restaurant and told me there was nothing they could do. Hopefully they let this server go...the restaurant has great potential. There is an amazing view and the food is pretty good, but I wish that this birthday dinner would have went much nicer than it did...especially for the price I paid! read more

It is NOW owned and operated by "Landry's Restaurants" (No relation to Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys), proud conglomerate of over 30 chains and Eateries, INCLUDING the Crab House and Rainforest Cafe (and ALMOST McCormick and Schmicks). This doesn't mean some of their food isn't good, 'cause as folks said, their Shrimp Cocktail and some other items (Clam Chowder) are exemplary!! Great salads too. But where I am going with this is that they are "Gulf Coasters". Face it Beau, the best seafood in the WORLD comes from the Pacific and ESPECIALLY the Pacific Northwest. As well, our West Coast "Fusion" style of cooking is far superior.. What I'm getting at here is the Gulf Coast Tail WAGS the Chart House Dog. The Chart House IS great just because of the drive to it, the view, the ambiance, good drinks, haughty serving style, AND some good food. This place is especially great if you're on your Prom dinner... But IF you wanna take Aunt Opal and Uncle Fred somewhere "Special", skip Joe's Crabshack, Red Slobster, AND CH!!! Take 'em Downtown. I like it here. My filet was soo tender and juicy, and cooked JUST RIGHT. I've been back a couple of times, and it never fails me. The view is also really nice. I love going here when the sun is setting, it adds extra ambiance to the food. It's nice and quiet. I had not visited The Chart House in many years I can remember the food to have been quality as well as the service and views of Portland. I was sadly surprised with my visit tonight, I brought my mother to show her the lovely view and enjoy the food she order the salmon special of the night it was more like an appetizer then a meal and she disliked it greatly it was made up of a extremely small salad and three thinly sliced smoked cured salmon :(could not eat it. My husband order the prime rib which was not a prime rib at all!! It had a large amount of fat around the outside of it he asked for it to be medium it came rare when we said something they had it seared only on the outside so upsetting! We ordered my mother shrimp & scallops which was very good but small portion 3 large scallops with 3 shrimp & a scant parsnip salad. I had order the lamb I was surprised at the poor quality of the lamb it was fatty and tough, brought home for my dog. I was very disappointed with the extremely poor quality of steak and lamb my husband said it was the worst steak he has ever eaten and the price at $185.00 for 4 entrees 2 glasses of wine, 2 cocktails and a side of mushrooms & lava cake (which was nice) overall I felt this was extremely overpriced for the poor poor quality of food! Dining service was fine...after one guffaw. The hostee hands me the menu right next to my wine glass, which I then proceeded to dump on my husband. I recommend setting the menu on the table. Calamari appetizer was over cooked, cold and dry. I ordered filet medallions with crab - medium and it showed up more well done. Husband had prime rib and lobster tail. Also both very over done. The wine was good. The most annoying thing is I left my sunglasses on the table and when I called they hadn't been turned in. I find that annoying. We dropped $200 on dinner and I am just supposed to expect my sunnies to be re-allocated to the wait staff. 8 day later update...
