My pasta was cold, the fish was too salty, and my boyfriends steak was basically not even cooked. He asked for rare and the meat was alarmingly red, so we asked for another one. I want to like this place but it's just hard to. You cannot reliably count on their food being good, or their service, and sometimes the actual fixtures themselves don't even work right. Case in point: When we first started going to this Cheddar's, it was clean and well run. The food was always good and the service seemed to be, too. Now, it's time for a makeover. Service needs improving, and so does the interior. It's showing its age. Tonight we saw duct tape on a seat cushion....really? Seriously? Get that thing recovered or order a new one. Post haste. Duct tape is not a fashion statement. Also, the bench cushion my wife was sitting on in our booth tonight almost fell through and did tip up when she tried to get up!!!! It's a good thing she wasn't hurt. However, somebody might get hurt, so the place really is in need of attention....soon. And the dinner we had was so so....just meh.... My mom and I love Cheddar's and would go often before COVID. Last week we decided to go and we will NOT be going back until COVID is totally under control. There's signs on the front door as you enter that all of their employees are wearing PPE (masks), and that we as customers are required to wear a mask. Well, we're seated, and our waiter comes up to our table with his mask under his nose. My mom is 84 years old! I looked at him and said, Mask Please! So, he pulled it up at that time. I saw him walking around the restaurant waiting on other people, the whole time with his mask under his nose. He came by our table several times, again, with his mask under his nose, and I'd motion to him to pull up his mask! I even asked him at one point, Is your mask too big and it keeps sliding down? He replied, No, I wear it that way. What? Seriously! I did want to talk to the manager and report him, but then decided I didn't want to make a scene. It seems like a manager would be around making sure everting is ok, but apparently not. We didn't go out for months due to COVID. I didn't let my mom go out even longer because of her age. I was scared for the longest time to go to a restaurant. But, my friends told me that restaurants have strict guidelines, they wear masks, social distancing, etc. So, we decided to go out a few times, and the other restaurants we visited did have strict guidelines and following all the rules. I agree that this chain would be in the same genre as Chili's and Applebee's; however, the difference is I really like this place. Also, everything is about 20%-25% cheaper here than at other similar chains. Even drinks are cheaper--the 18oz margaritas are $2.50 all day every day! The food is just typical American fare, but they do a good job with it here, and they don't skimp on the portions. The chicken tender platter ($8) is awesome. The breading on the tenders is crisp and tasty, plus you get to choose 2 side items (I recommend broccoli-cheese casserole and fries). For under $5, I got a big hamburger topped with just the right amount of bacon, cheese, pickles, and bbq sauce. I don't know what all else was on that "smokehouse burger", but I LOVED it. In addition to being fresh, tasty, and well-assembled, my burger was really hot, too, which has not been my experience at Chili's or Waterloo. The servers and hostesses seemed young, maybe in high school, and they looked happy, but they took their jobs seriously. I found our server efficient, friendly, and attentive. No complaints. Pretty sure one of my worst dining experiences ever. We've had many a good meal there but lately they are really struggling with quality.

I'll start by disclosing that I worked here for over a year, so weight my review however you like. And don't ask me what goes in the kitchen and dry storage area, it happens in every restaurant. (Every service industry worker is nodding right now.) The food/price ratio is fantastic. Big portions and sides and the most expensive thing on the menu, the 16 ounce steak, is still less than 20 bucks. The sides are all made fresh every day in the building, as well as the ranch dressing. That is the truth, despite whatever else you may believe or hear. For an ideal meal, get an order of croissants and a ramekin of the raspberry jam that they use for the Monte Cristo (for God's sake stay away from the Monte Cristo though, it's a heart-attack on a plate and tastes nasty to boot.) Get either the lemon-pepper chicken, tilapia or my fav, the chicken caesar pasta salad. Really cool twist, pasta AND salad. Stay away from the bar though, you'll be disappointed. Their vaunted painkillers, which you can only buy two of, actually have less alcohol than other drinks. That and a honey ring and coconut shavings and nasty rum. Cheddars would never be first on my list of places to eat. But we had just finished volunteering at Brown Santa, and were starving! We had been packing food boxes, so after 2 hours of staring at things like canned corn and boxed stuffing, we had really worked up an appetite for homogenous American cuisine. Or maybe it was the closest place with a full bar. I don't remember the exact reasoning behind it, but we ended up at Cheddars. We did not make a bad choice. Without meaning to be absolutely ridiculous, we ordered water in every imaginable combination (with ice & lemon, no ice/no lemon, with ice & no lemon, so on and so forth...). The waitress was good humored and gracious about it. In fact, at one point we looked up and realized she had brought us all more waters, there were now over a dozen glasses of water in every combination, sitting on the edge of the table. The food was decent. I had chicken Dijon with mushrooms, which I enjoyed more than I expected. Two from our party ordered the kids meal chicken plate, which was a more reasonable serving. One person's order was wrong, but it was corrected quickly and efficiently. The hit of the night? A specialty cocktail was only $3.50! My husband and I totally randomly ended up here at 10:30 pm on a Friday night recently. We were hungry, headed home on 35, and voila. "Have you ever been there? That place is good..." my husband said. "Let's go. I've been in Dallas. I liked it fine." So we pull in. This place is hopping! No wait, but tons of people there hanging out, like THIS is their Friday night destination. I suddenly felt much more jazzed for Friday night. There were people drinking insane (goldfish bowl sized) 18 oz Margaritas (from 7pm to close) and all dressed to the nines. It must be quite the cool hangout or something. Our server was attentive and friendly without going overboard. The food was delicious. My husband ate buffalo chicken strips with mashed potatoes and loved it. I had a veggie plate- carrots, salad, mashed potatoes and broccoli/cheese casserole. It also came with a totally delicious croissant that came out a minute after we placed our order. I was surprised that I liked this place... but I liked this place. We'll be back. It was a good mix for my "flexitarian family" (one meat-eater and one vegetarian) and is open late. My husband and I are regulars here. The food here is typically great and staff is pretty good here. We typically go here and order their burgers, all of which are really delicious, big, and filling. Their fries aren't too bad either. Last time we ordered their potato skins and will not order them again, they tasted like someone melted Velveeta cheese and add some bacon bits (yuck!). We didn't want to complain because we already complained about our fries and the waitress brought them back fresh and hot. The place gets really busy in the evenings, especially on the weekends. We went here for an early dinner and left extremely disappointed. As a chef/server duo, my husband and I know what good service is. We know how the industry works and we expect excellence when we go out. Tonight, we had our 3 children with us. From the moment we sat, we could immediately see our server, Tatiana, was unhappy to have a family with 3 children to serve. Now, we get it. Statistics prove that when a server sees young children, they assume that the tip will be small because they assume that families don't have expendable funds. But as a server, and knowing statistics, I would never treat any table less than the next because sometimes, people surprise you. So let's get to the point. First, this part isn't Tatiana's fault. We ordered the Sampler treat. They were out of the cheese dips so she said the only thing we could substitute was extra chicken strips or extra potato skins. That seems a little ridiculous and I'm not understanding why maybe fries wouldn't be an option? Second, Tatiana at first seemed like she'd be patient. But that changed quickly. We noticed she had a couple attractive and single appearing men in her section where she seemed to want to focus her time. Okay, but in doing so, she neglected us. We ordered our drinks, I asked for a bowl of lemons SIX times before I actually got said bowl. So then we order our meals. I physically pointed to Chicken Fried Chicken and she acknowledged this. We talked about sides. I asked to substitute mashed potatoes for a LOADED baked potato. Now when I think LOADED, I think butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon and chives. My potato had butter, sour cream and cheese. I didn't complain. But then I went to cut into my chicken fried chicken. Access denied. It was beef. And way too difficult to cut. So she's walking by and I say, "Excuse me? When you have a sec..." and she continues to walk away. Okay. Nevermind I guess. So here goes another 5 minutes, she walks past her again, I try to get her attention, it's been 15 minutes since we received the meal, my family is nearly done with their food and here goes Tatiana back to her single men. So FINALLY, I'm able to get her attention and let her know I didn't get what I ordered but she seemed to care very little. I said "It's fine. Just take it off the ticket." So then she asked if I wanted her to get me the chicken. I say no because at this point, why? My family will be long done before I ever get my food and with toddlers in tow, well, we all know how that plays out. Not once did Tatiana actually check on us or how the food was unless I grabbed her attention. There was no table touching with any of her tables except the men. And here's the best part. We are excellent tippers. Typically 20-35% based on service. Today was the first time I tipped below 20% and felt like an asshat. She has potential. I could tell by the way she was interacting with her male customers. However, each table deserves the same attention regardless of what preconceived notions a server may have. And tonight, was a very big letdown. On top of this, as a former manager, anytime a ticket was incorrect, I ALWAYS made a point to handle it rather than have my servers handle it. As a manager, I always checked back with tables and made sure mistakes were corrected and guests were happy. I don't think I saw a single manager on the floor at any point. The food here is very reasonably priced for the atmosphere and decorum. I particularly enjoyed the rotating fans in the main dining room, which looked nice but were impractical for their purpose. I went on a late lunch and I did not have breakfast that day, therefore I was hungry. We were seated right as we had 4/5 of our party arrive. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. I had only been here once before and the only thing I remembered being outstanding was the broccoli cheese casserole side. Needless to say, I needed the help of my Yelp app. In the end, I picked the Baked Spasagna over the Shepherd's Pie, which were both chef specialties. I choose my entree on the basis that it was a new item and it sounded like an interesting twist on your regular spaghetti or lasagna. For my side, I ordered the casserole and as per recommended by Yelpers, I got the 3 honey butter croissant rolls. The spasagna came with a piece of garlic bread, which was buttery and tasty as most garlic breads. When I first looked at the spasagna, I was really excited to dig in. In hindsight, I should have eaten it with a spoon instead of a fork, or at least used a knife. It was basically like a spaghetti casserole, and using only a fork made it hard to tear through all the individual pastas. The tomato and meat sauce on top of the spasagna was very nice, topped with some fresh grated Parmesan. The center was all spaghetti noodles with some mozzarella cheese. In my opinion. this would have resembled a lasagna much better if there was tomato sauce in the center as well and would have prevented the "dry" feeling it had inside. The sides were extraordinary. The broccoli cheese casserole was creamy and not too cheesy. The broccoli was the right amount of firm, not too soft. The honey butter croissants were DELICIOUS. The croissant itself was so soft and fluffy and the honey butter just allowed the whole thing to melt in your mouth. It was a good meal and I had to take half of it home. If I went back, I would order the same sides and maybe try another entree. read more

I have literally gone three times in a month. The soup and salad lunch for $5.99 is delicious as well as the veggie plate and the baked spasagna. The deserts are major portions. No wonder it there is always a wait there. The best item on the menu is the Buffalo Chicken Wrap...wow it is also my crack rock (see wings n' more). Buff chicken with slaw and chedder cheese. The service was really slow and the server's attitude was as though he did not care to be there and it was not until we went to pay the bill that all of a sudden his attitude changed, since his tip was on the line. 2. Our food took forever to come out and we ended up having to send things back due to it not being cooked properly. And when it was sent back we yet again had to wait forever for the replacement food. 3. I will say that a member of management did her best to get the food corrected and she was very helpful. 4. The food was just okay nothing really to brag about. Things need to be reworked with this location. It's not happy hour . . .where can you get tipsy for $7?!?!?!?!? CHEDDAR'S!!!! Who would have thought? I grew up in Pflugerville, and back then we always came to Austin to "go out" . . . but things have changed! So when I was meeting a friend north for a later lunch we chose Cheddar's because we wanted options, and their menu had a large variety. It was only my second time to Cheddar's and I knew I'd get plenty of food, because their portions are very generous - but what surprised me was the margaritas! It was too early for happy hour, but their sangria margaritas were only $3.50 a piece. Add to that the fact that their margaritas come in those 16 oz glasses and they were tasty and strong . . .and they had me hooked. I only needed 2 to get me a little tipsy, which is perfect for day drinking! I was pleasantly surprised! I really enjoyed the outside seating, even though the only view is of highway and parking lot, they had the patio decorated nicely so I didn't notice all the cement and gravel. *smile* Also, they are close enough to the Cinemark movie theater to make it a just a quick trip over to catch a movie . . . which I find to be a pretty big plus. I'm not a fan of Applebee's or Chili's by any means.... and I have restaurants lined up into different tiers.... Cheddar's falls in this category. I didn't expect much, but I did think it might be decent seeing as they had a fair looking menu. I was honestly suprised.... I have driven here from South Austin on several occasions... and visited the other Cheddars (183 which I loathe)... and it has been worth it. I really enjoy their happy hour strawberry margarita's and have heard good things about their other mixed drinks. When I am there, I try to either enjoy one of the steak specials or my favorite is the caesar pasta (last time I had them throw some spicy buffalo chicken strips on it) The bread is very tasty but the service is the one thing that brings my score down a star. They seem to be pretty slow but at the same time they are usually pretty packed. All in all, if your in the area, its a nice stop to make. read more

My husband and I went to Cheddar's this weekend for a late lunch. When we walked in, there was no one ahead of us. Yet, because we required a high chair, we were told we'd have a ten minute wait. We sat down and waited. People from the UT game started trickling in. All were seated, no wait. My husband started to get irritated. Finally, he stood up and asked the manager, "What's the problem? Can you explain why we have not been seated?" We were told that we were required to wait because we had to have a high chair and only certain areas/tables could be used. We were then immediately seated at a table that had been empty the entire time we were there waiting. Go figure. So, why the five stars you ask???? Although that irritated me, we had the BEST waitress we've ever had at Cheddar's. Tia was her name. My husband ordered the lemon pepper grilled cat fish and I had the chicken alfredo. Tia took our order quickly and even asked about our daughter. She took the time to ensure that my baby had her own plate and her own water cup. (No other waiter has ever even asked.) She made sure to ask if I wanted the veggies that came in my order. I opted to have them on the side...no problem. Our order came out fast and everything was correct. She later came out with our checks and asked if we needed boxes. Yep! When she gave us our boxes, she had dated them. Just went to lunch there today, and it makes me wonder why I don't come here more often. The menu is fairly traditional American, but what makes this great is the low prices combined with goo food. Take one of my stand-by dishes: The blackened catfish with two sides. The normal price is $8.39, but there's a lunch menu portion for $6.99. The only difference between the two is one vs. two catfish filets. I'm a pretty big eater, and the single filet is plenty - it's served on a bed of rice with two sides; if you pick a baked potato for one of the sides, you've got a huge meal. Pretty much everything else on the menu is less than $9 as well and I don't think we've had anything that could be described as bad. Today I had the chicken caesar pasta salad for $6.99 - a big plate of salad, ziti, and shaved parmesan with a nicely grilled chicken breast on top. Very good. The fried catfish my mom had was great, as was my son's bacon cheeseburger. The $3.99 onion ring appetizer can feed two people for a main meal if you want to order an appetizer. I love Cheddar's! I love the food, the prices, the portions, and the service. I usually describe Cheddar's to others as similar to Chili's but with better and cheaper food. Whenever I drive up to Austin, I eat at Cheddar's... because the closest one to me in Houston is 30 minutes away. Yes, I know that makes a lot of sense. I always order a side of honey-buttered croissants. They are undoubtedly unhealthy for you, but they are oh so delicious. Some entrees I've found to be consistently good are the chicken pot pie, baby back ribs, chicken tenders (these really are tender and breaded well), and dijon chicken and mushrooms. The other day I tried bourbon glazed salmon, which was pretty good but I actually preferred the other dishes I previously mentioned. Each entree comes with two sides, which are also very tasty. I haven't tried many of the appetizers, but the homemade onion rings (appetizer) comes in a HUMONGOUS batch. The food is almost always great, and it's very reasonably priced. You should give Cheddar's a shot! Or not..... I don't want to have to wait in line after all. read more

The food would easily get 4 stars. They have the best chicken tenders in town! The salads are always nice and fresh. The hot croissants they serve are delicious. The prices are cheap! It is conveniently located. The service and long wait make it only a 3 star experience. (Some nights it gets only a 1 or 2!) Last nite was one of those nights. It was fairly busy. We were told the wait was 25 minutes. I adamantly refused to go next door to Fish Daddy's again, so we wait it out. 42 minutes in, my dining companions are fixing to bail! Oh wait! While visiting the Austin area we decided to stop in and grab a quick bite to eat. We were seated fairly quickly and attended to soon after. Service was Awesome! Food was Amazing! Girlfriend and I decided to get a quick bite to eat before we went to go see Dark Knight just down the street. Our experience at this Cheddars is normally very good although we usually take it to go or sit at the bar. Today, we decided to grab a table. Server didnt introduce himself and quickly took our drink and food order. We each got a soda and Im sorry to say they both tasted flat. Not a big deal. We ordered chips and queso and waited for 15 minutes for it to arrive, but it never did. During this time our server was nowhere to be found. A different server came out with what looked like our entrees, but upon closer examination she delivered someone elses entrees to our table. At this time our server finally made it back over to us and seemed oblivious to the fact that we didnt get our queso. After about five minutes we got our correct order delivered to the table. My burger was burnt to a crisp and tasted like nothing(server never asked how I would like it), well done would have been fine, but it was more like a hockey puck. Our server seemed very out of his element as he apologized for the tilapia(we didnt order tilapia). If we come back to this place we will be sitting at the bar or taking it to go as they never seem to mess anything up there. The only reason they are getting two stars is because we have had good experiences before. read more
