I feel horrible for leaving this review but it has to be done. This place must've changed owners because after my first visit back from a few years ago, this place seems completely different. The inside seems very messy & cluttered now and the quality of food has completely went downhill. Of course this isn't your high end sushi place but after the gym, my kid and I wanted a quick bite without having to resort to a fast food place like McDonald's or something so I figured I'd give it a go. We ordered the chicken teriyaki and I had to throw it out. Completely overcooked and probably been reheated a couple different times. They also gave us a huge order of noodles which was a nice gesture but it was completely soggy, flavorless & was most likely sitting there all day. The portions were big but I'd rather have quality food compared to just pile high portions to get what they may think is the value for my buck. The raw sushi was decent in taste but sloppily made and the sashimi was cut way too thick. It was still considerably expensive for what we got. I live in Oakland and when ever Im out this way and craving sushi or just want some good teriyaki this is my go to prices are very reasonable you get a lot for what you pay for I usually get a #1 chicken teriyaki with noodles ! and they aren't stingy here ! So if you're looking for some large portion food that won't break your wallet, this is a place you can go to. They also do catering and that for a reasonable price. The not so good: often I find that their teriyaki is a little too salty which causes me to only have a few mouth fulls before I just feel ...ehhh... about eating. But if I have some blanched vegetables to go with it and white rice, it's actually pretty decent. So that's what you can do if you feel it's too salty too. The bad: sushi isn't what their good at. Definitely not here if you're looking for some good sushi. But if you're looking for some simple rolls like California roll or tempura rolls, those are alright. Anyways, you pay for what you get. I came here before a concert during their happy hour. Honestly, the service I received was quite great and pleasant. The cashier helping my friend and I was super patient and friendly the entire time. We even struck up a conversation about hydroflask while ordering food. She was polite and professional the whole time. Now about the food?! It's amazing for the price. You get way more bang for your buck. I got all the food pictured just for $30. I was super full by the end and had more than enough left overs for my lunch tomorrow. This review is over half a year past due. I thought I left a review but I guess I forgot... So when my husband said I can order whatever food I wanted for Valentine's Day, I immediately thought of my favorite food (sushi). Since there was no budget, I went all out. I emailed my order in and had my husband pick up the food a few days later. When my husband showed up, he went to the cashier to pay. After he paid, the cashier casually pointed to a table where the food was and told him to grab them himself. No one offered to help him and we had order a few party trays of food! My husband had to one-by-one put the food in his car trunk. They didn't even bother opening the door for him either. I ordered Steak & Shrimp Teriyaki , Grand Opening Special California Roll On Special for a $1 , Rising Sun Roll and Shrimp Tempura. I was assigned number #72 as my order number by the Cashier . I paid by Master Card . I checked into Chef Teriyaki on Yelp and was rewarded with a Yelp Check in Offer a free Medium Fountain Drink . Cool Thanks Yelp and Chef Teriyaki. 8 Minutes later my number #72 was Called and I rolled up to the Grill and picked up my order I rolled to my Table and opened my Steak and Shrimp Teriyaki plate and was Sorely disappointed there were about 6 Pieces of Steak and 5 Shrimp . I was very disappointed with the Portion but what was there tasted great. The folks next table over asked me what I thought of the food . Jay is a very nice guy and Takes Customer Service and his Product Quality very seriously . Jay is also the one who came up with the Concept for Chef Teriyaki Japanese Grill and Hopes to Franchise his Idea . My Shrimp Tempura was cooked perfectly and tasted great . My Sushi Rolls were well constructed and the Fish and Eel was fresh and tasted great. They Also Do Catering . They have a Unisex Restroom . They have LCDs TVs for Entertainment . Jay has totally Remodeled the Space and the Menus are Backlit and very easy to read . The Counters are even Granite. I came here a few times, getting the tiger roll, rainbow roll, dragon roll, and sadly everything was mediocre. Conveniently located off the freeway, as you enter, they offer samples. I ordered a simple #1 chicken teriyaki with veggies and white rice. Let me ask you this...how long does it take to cook stir fry chicken???! Apparently mine took 30 minutes to cook. Finally!! Cheap fast food Japanese eats that are amazing! Love this place, in particular the Bento #1 combo. Chicken Katsu, Shrimp Tempura, rice, salad and california roll (with no tobiko). For 9 bucks it is super filling, delicious and my go to when I have time to grab a quick bite. Their dragon rolls are also good and reasonably priced (grab a punch card). Be careful! The lady, who we think took our order over the phone, walks to the back of the restaurant and starts yelling, "This order was put in at 11:30, why isn't it ready?" So she comes back out and asks if we can wait another 20 minutes??! Really!!? What's the point of calling in an order to have to come and wait some more!! We asked for a refund and left.
