I don't usually leave bad reviews, but I felt compelled after a really disappointing experience at Chef Tony in Arcadia. To be fair, there were a couple of standout dishes -- the Fried Diced Beef Filet with Japanese BBQ Sauce was tender and flavorful, and the Sweet and Sour Pork hit all the right notes with its balance of crispiness and tang. Unfortunately, everything else about the experience fell short. The worst part was the Salted Shrimp dish (possibly listed as "Baked Prawns with Salt" on their menu). They completely forgot to bring it out. We asked about it twice after receiving the rest of our food, and still waited another 20 minutes. It never came -- so we asked to have it removed from the bill. Instead, they charged us anyway, and eventually brought it out in a plastic to-go container -- a sad, bland portion of boiled shrimp that tasted like an afterthought. No flavor, no presentation, just disappointing all around. Between the poor service, the miscommunication, and being charged for a dish we had long given up on, it left a really bad taste in my mouth (figuratively and literally). Yes, this place gets quite busy and its not very large inside. Its loud and bustling on the weekend, as to be expected. The food was very fresh and good. It was not frozen (like some other dim sum places) My favorite was the egg white egg tarts. These are hard to find now. YUMMY! I want to come back and try more dishes. Try coming during the week if you don't want to deal with waiting. Pretty large shared parking lot, and if the wait is long, you can get a snack from the neighboring establishments. ;) read more

I've passed by Chef Tony Dim Sum in Pasadena but never stopped by. I was browsing on Yelp and saw the Arcadia location and figured I'd try this since parking is free in Arcadia. I walked in and asked for a table of four on a Saturday right before 2pm. We were seated within 5 minutes. I'm familiar with this restaurant layout since this was DTF's old location. Here's what I ordered: Savory deep fried chinese donut Shrimp dumpling Shrimp and pork dumpling with black truffle Steamed bbq pork bun Steamed chicken feet with brown sauce Squid ink scallop dumpling with xo sauce Rice noodle roll with shrimp Pan fried taro cake Wok fried radish cake with xo sauce Deep fried shrimp spring roll Hot tea Iced milk tea They forgot to bring out Fried Rice with Dried Scallop and Egg White so I did not get to try this. Walking distance from my son's townhome - that's dangerous when you have a Cantonese and Dim Dum restaurant, Chinese bakery, and dessert shop all in one nearby strip mall. Chef Tony, originating out of Asia then opening restaurants in Canada and the US, is on the higher end of the price spectrum for dim sum restaurants. They have dim sum items with gold flakes, squid ink, black truffles, elaborate soups, in addition to traditional items that you're used to at all dim sum establishments. We arrived early at this modern looking restaurant that used to be a Din Tai Fung; Still has the large glass windows looking into the prep and steamer room as you walk in. Furniture is modern and the walls are sporadically decorated with pictures of Chef Tony with VIPs and large plate glass windows allowing for plenty of natural light from the parking lot. The two of us shared eight items: - Chicken Feet (bland but properly cooked to the point that all digits easily separated - just spice it up more) - Black Truffle Siu Mai (Good taste, meaty..would love more Black Truffle) - Squid Ink Scallop Dumpling with XO Sauce ( spicy good) - Fried Taro Cake (different and not one of our favorites) - Fried Meat Dumpling (crispy, chewy, and a good amount of meat filling, liked this) - Chicken Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf (good version, tasty, no lost rice as it all came off of the leaf) - French Crusted Baked Pork Bun (another good version, flaky outer layer, soft puffy bun, good amount of tasty filling) - Milk Bun (soft puffy bun with runny eggy filling, wanted more of a milky filling) Overall, we had decent unbothering service, clean amenities, decent food, and everything came out HOT as it should be. First time. Ordered many dishes. Prices were fair or even a bit less than expected. Quality of ingredients was high and service was efficient. Overall impression of the food was that it was just okay. A little "cheffy" for my tastes as I prefer the more classic. Shumai with black truffle - the truffle is unnecessary and doesn't add any flavor. The har gow was a good version of itself and unadorned, as were the spare ribs, shrimp roll and spring rolls. Less successful were the baked char siu bao and the chicken with special sauce, which was a ginger flavor bomb and served cold. The seafood chow mein was also a decent version of the dish. Other dim sum we tried were just okay. The restaurant is not huge and the decor pretty minimalist, but it was clean and pleasant. Few minutes turned into another 25 minutes. Enquired about how much longer and they kept saying another "few minutes". If they cannot fulfill the order in a timely manner, don't give such an estimate. If they have good customer service, offer awaiting customer something. Even a glass of water is better than nothing. Alright I hate to have to write such a low star review to this restaurant but the store manager at this location seriously needs to be looked at. We come here often, and for the most part everything is good. Their food is good, the rest of the staff are nice. However, this manager.. my gosh, this is probably about the 4th time where we encountered him being just so unpleasant to our party. My sister waived at him to come over because we have been sitting there for a while and was never acknowledged. The manager then proceeds to come to our table looking irritated and had the nastiest attitude towards our group. He gave my sister almost like a disgusted look. I have only tried this place once before since it opened but only a few dishes that were brought back home as leftovers so really didn't taste the food fresh out of the kitchen. However, I was able to come here recently for the first time dining in. We got there around 10:30am on a Sunday. The crowd didn't seem too big when I parked. Ended up waiting for about 20-30 mins for a party of 3. Finally got seated and didn't have to wait too long for our food. Ended up ordering a few dishes - juicy pork dumplings, shrimp and pork dumplings with black truffle, chicken feet, salted egg yok bun, milky bun, and a few others. I'd say a bit pricey for dim sum but this is considered a more high-end dim sum place. Does it taste high end? Besides the special black truffle, taste is pretty on par with other dim sum restaurants. Other places taste pretty similar at half the price. However, I can dishes like the chicken feet was pretty good and one of the better ones I've had. For the siu mai (shrimp and pork dumplings), it's a bit different with the truffle on top. Located in a small plaza with a small parking lot! This is more of a high quality and classy dim sum so expect prices to be a lot more higher than the usual dim sum spots. So if you haven't been to Chef Tony's or don't know much about it, I'd put it at "slightly fancier than your average dim sum". You know what I'm talking about. Like it's not just siu mai, but it's siu mai with black truffle. The har gao is squid ink and has a gold leaf. You get it. So with that, comes a little bit of a "slightly fancier than your average dim sum" prices. So if you expect that going into Chef Tony's, you'll have less sticker shock. We came with 4 adults and 2 kids and the total was about $120. We were all very satisfied and had leftovers. The food is tasty with the stand outs being the eggplant, baked bbq pork bun, spare ribs, and the pan fried shrimp & pork pandan bun. We went when it opened so there was no wait for us but when we left, there were about 3-4 groups waiting. It isn't going to make it into my rotation of dim sum places, but I can see myself craving this every now and then. Free parking lot that is shared between other restaurants. Service was decent. The dim sum by me closed down, so I was really happy to see that Chef Tony opened down the block. When I first saw it, I thought, Oh, another average dim sum place. I was so wrong! It really exceeded my expectations. The service isn't great but that seems to be the common theme amongst most Asian eateries is how much the servers cannot be bothered to be there. While it has standard menu items, there are also twists on the classics, like the Squid Ink Shrimp Dumpling. It drives me crazy that they're constantly out of certain items. But the flavors, creativity and freshness on the dishes can't be beat. I love the aesthetic and presentation. Their shrimp is literally the cleanest and freshest I've ever eaten at any dim sum place. Came here on a weekend around 1030am. This location is kinda tiny, as it occupied the old Din Tai Fung location. We were seated promptly and given a paper menu to mark. Ordered the baked BBQ bun, which had a good crunchy exterior and BBQ pork in the middle. They had a deep fried durian pastry, which was flaky on the outside and had some flavor of durian inside, but I kinda wish they added just a little bit more durian to it. It would have made it smelly, yes, but so much more better. It felt kinda dimmed down. Their steamed lava egg bun w/ gold had a lovely flavor inside and had a lot of bread in it. Their truffle siu mai was smaller than I expected, as the siu mai could definitely be bigger by a lot, but the truffle flavor was good there. The squid ink shrimp dumpling with gold leaf was alright - I'd probably pass and get the regular crystal dumpling it felt like it was oversteamed? or something where the skin felt more wet. The fried crispy noodle was fine, but it felt kinda lazy as the noodles were on the bottom but all the meat and sauce was stacked on top. Yes, at the end of the day, it's going down my stomach, but presentation wise it was so-so. The bunny is adorable and was a great way to finish off the meal . It's a coconut flavor to it. There are some items here that I'd probably would get again, but for some of the mainstream dim sum dishes, I don't know if the premium pricing works for it. Located in the old DTF location this place has big shoes to fill for Chinese food. 10:30am was the perfect time to go without waiting for a table on a Saturday morning, the big rush came at 11. The dimsum dishes are familiar enough, but some have a twist to it like black truffle siu mai. The dessert came out second so the order of food is a bit haphazard when you just check boxes off a list instead of going to a place that you can pick from a cart. The chicken feet flavor was not good, too sweet of a sauce. The best item I think was the lotus leaf wrapped rice, the sticky rice is cooked perfectly and has good flavor. I first heard about Chef Tony in Vancouver, BC. When I learned that they opened restaurants in SoCal, I had to go try it. Usually, my wife and I come back from SoCal on a Sunday so we decided to get some dim sum before heading back to the Bay Area. We arrive 15 minutes before they open, and there's no line. We are literally the first group to enter the restaurant. We know exactly what we want, so we mark all our items on the order form, and the food comes out really fast. Everything is high quality and made really well. They have some unique items as well. I love their Chinese donut. It's stuffed with shrimp. It's not too greasy, and nicely fried to a crispy exterior, with the added richness of sweet mayonnaise dolloped on top. Their buns are another standout, it's unbelievably soft and airy. The pandan buns are a must get too. There are a lot of bougy items on the menu that come with truffle, squid ink, etc. Chef Tony is definitely going to be my regular breakfast/lunch stop on road trips to SoCal! read more

This place was packed to the brim on a Sunday, silly me, should have gone up early to avoid the line! Still, the restaurant does not have a good system of addressing the wait lines. People were waiting and they were all over the place. Parking is quite challenging, if you're unlucky... The waiting area is very small so you have to stay outside, you have to keep checking the list in fear that they will skip you. It is inconsistent because sometimes they call your number in Chinese and sometimes in English. The same waiter seems a bit flustered trying to handle the heavy traffic. They do offer a modern take on a dim sum place, everything is made to order, so you don't get the old school dim sum rolling in carts. Somehow I kinda miss that experience though. The food is mediocre, it's a hit and miss, some of the dishes are fairly well, and some are either too salty or not enough flavoring. I can tell the rice roll and the beef omasum tripe is good, the rest is just meh. The price is not outrageous but it is on the higher end. Expect to spend around one hundred buckaroos, for two. We gave Chef Tony a try at its soft opening a while ago and was underwhelmed by it, and decided to give it another try since our friend said it was his best find in the last few months. The experience was much better than our first time, surprisingly no wait on a Saturday over CNY week, the har gow and siu mai did not stick together into a big blob like last time, and the chicken feet were actually pretty yummy this time. Delicious dim sum place but the price is pretty steep! I do not mind paying for good food, and maybe this is a new leaf for dim sum standards. However, paying $7-$8 for a normal portion and classic dim sum dish seems a little unreasonable. Their rice noodle rolls are delicious. Rice noodle is thin and they put a decent amount of filling in it. We tried their prawn special dish that is $14 for 4 pieces of prawn that is wrapped with egg roll paper and then fried. I wouldn't recommend this dish because it was just meh. I would've wanted to try other dishes instead but it was worth a shot. Singapore style vermicelli was delicious. Flavor was on point and the portion was huge. String beans are okay Crispy baked pork char sui bun (see photo) IDK if I even got the name correctly. But that was really good! Came here last Sunday for dinner, expecting a nice higher end dim sum place, but left with a bad taste in my mouth - literally lol. We ordered a bunch of dishes, but I was most looking forward to the radish cake. Took a bite out of the XO radish cake dish and crunched right into several pieces of what felt like rocks. We flagged the waitress down and she said it was pieces of some sort of shellfish. She offered to cancel the dish, but never apologized or even acted concerned. It's a red flag that the kitchen mistakenly let pieces of shellfish fall into the radish cake batter, as this could definitely chip or hurt someone's teeth. Especially as a place that markets itself as higher end dim sum, I expect higher end service and quality control. went to check if quality is as good as "advertised". not really. we ordered some of the signature dim sum and found them to be average. the place was quite empty. The dim sum items "sounded" unique, e.g black ink hacao (shrimp dumpling with squid ink wrap topped with gold flakes! The noodle wrap was good, thin almost transparent wrap, only if they could stuff it with more protein! If you are curious, you can check out the dishes on the web. This is a higher end dim sum/Chinese spot located in Arcadia where the original Din Tai Fung used to be located. Prices are slightly higher than normal dim sum spots but not outrageous. No push carts here, you order off the menu and everything is made fresh to order. The menu has a lot of pictures if you aren't familiar with the dishes which is nice. They offer all the basic dim sum and a full menu of regular Chinese dishes like noodles, fried rice, veggies and stir fried meat dishes. The best dish I tried was #8, savory deep fried Chinese donut. Basically, it's shrimp paste stuffed inside a deep fried Chinese donut with a dollop of mayo on top. These are fried to perfection, light and crispy! Delicious!
