There wasn't a wait, but the place was almost full. Got the Pan Fried Taro Cake or 香煎芋絲餅 for $7.38, Wood Ear Salad with Mature Vinegar or 陳醋雲耳 for $9.98, Stir Fried Pork with Dried Bean Tofu or 香干炒肉 for $19.80, and Steamed Dim Sum Combo or 蒸點四拼 for $10.98. Ordered white rice for $2.00 a bowl. The Pan Fried Taro Cake or 香煎芋絲餅 was really good and crispy. The Wood Ear Salad with Mature Vinegar or 陳醋雲耳 was descent. The Stir Fried Pork with Dried Bean Tofu wasn't in the paper menu, but was in the book menu. It was really salty and oily. I have never left a bad review on yelp for a restaurant business. However, after today's experience, I feel the need to warn other customers. My husband and I came to Chef Tony for the first time because we read online it was included on the online Michelin Guide for restaurants in LA. Even before the food was served, we noticed a few flies flying around the restaurant and going around tables that were already served food. As soon as our first dish was served, one or two flies started coming over. My husband and I didn't mind just brushed them away. But pretty soon..we were getting 3 or 4 that were flying and attempting to get into our food. One landed on my husband's water cup before we could get to it. And funny thing is a waitress happens to be at our table bringing out more dishes to our table, clearly saw the fly landing on the cup but did not say anything or offer us another cup. I know she saw because I saw her looked at the cup and moved the cup to the side. Basically our whole meal time was consumed with looking for flies that were trying to get to our food. Flies were landing on the booth bench...other table's food..or on other customers. At first, we asked for napkins to cover each dish so we wouldn't have to keep swatting our hands while we try to eat. Eventually, my husband and I ended up asking for to-go containers to at least be able to take some bites in peace knowing our food would be covered. I was especially excited because it's listed in the Michelin Guide, so I came in with pretty high expectations. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. The restaurant wasn't completely packed when we arrived, but the service was much slower than expected. There were several empty tables, yet we still waited about five minutes for one to be cleaned before being seated. They also charge $2.20 per person for tea service, which isn't unusual for dim sum restaurants, but it's something to keep in mind. We ordered quite a few dishes to get a good feel for the menu. The Savory Deep Fried Chinese Donut filled with shrimp paste ($18.80) was good, but I didn't think it justified the price. The ox omasum in XO sauce ($7.38) was solid, but nothing particularly memorable. The shrimp rice noodle roll ($8.98) was my favorite dish of the meal. The rice noodle had a great bouncy texture, the shrimp were cooked perfectly, and everything paired well with the sweet soy sauce. The French baked BBQ pork buns ($6.38) were tasty, but I have to agree with previous reviewers that I still prefer the version from Tim Ho Wan. Hub really love the truffle steam chicken but I wished I can taste more truffle tho. The scallops shrimp dumplings no longer offer the black skin so it was just okay. My boyfriend took me to Chef Tony Dim Sum for breakfast. They are located in the same plaza as one of our sushi spots, Sushi Kisen. The parking here is awful, limited parking with tight spots and aggressive drivers. When we came in there was no hostess at the front. Eventually we got seated at a tight 2-top that was definitely not meant for dim sum style dining cause it was a struggle to fit our food. Their wait times are usually ok during the weekdays. Their services are usually good and very attentive, their teas are excellent. We never feel they are rushing us out of the door even when they are busy. Parking can be hard on the weekends, I highly recommend carpool. Just hope that their dim sum can be more consistent. This is a review I wrote two years ago, I don't know why it's disappered. First of all, it's good and crowded. We arrived at 0950, 12/31, and already a queue of about seven or eight groups waiting ahead. Once it's occupied, the second rounds have to wait outside and at least one hour waiting. Second, tips, DON'T order the house special Roast Crispy Chicken with Black Truffle. Yes, it's wonderfully crispy, but the black truffle dipping sauce on the side had no black truffle smell AT ALL. The sauce was tasteless and even a plate of Chinese garlic chives blossom (韭菜花) would be better, even though I don't like to eat Chinese garlic chives blossom. Third, DON'T order any dish that should have a strong fragrance. Like Shrimp and Pork Dumplings with Black Truffle, Deep Fried Durian Pastry. They didn't have the smell they should have. Otherwise, all the rest were good or acceptable. Every dish met the standard, they were traditional, and they were authentic. Here are some recommendations: Shrimp Wonton with House Spicy Sauce. It was mildly spicy, the spicy everyone could handle it. The wonton was full of shrimp, soft, tender, and delicious. The sauce was full of flavor. Deep Fried Japanese Octopus It was only the octopus feet without the body, you could read it from the menu if you know Chinese. It was crispy and very well seasoned. Shrimp Dumpling Which was steamed and fresh, very tasty, and very classic. Textbook level. Deep Fried Shrimp Spring Roll It was deep-fried but not oily at all, which was good, no one likes a mouthful of oil. Rice Noodle Roll with Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll with Minced Beef and Chinese Parsley For the rice noodle roll, the shrimp one was better than the beef one, you still can order the beef one in case you already had the shrimp dumpling, shrimp wonton, and shrimp spring roll, too many shrimp in Cantonese restaurants. Deep Fried Pork Dumpling The personal favorite dish in any Chinese breakfast tea restaurant rarely had a bad one. Coconut Pudding The pudding was in rabbit shape, order it if you have kids with you. The next lunar/Chinese year is the rabbit, it's a good fortune hint. Something not that good: Juicy Pork Dumpling The shape of the dumpling fails. The juice of the dumpling fails. Chef Tony is a great place to get treated to, but considering the actual price to the quality? It's far disappointing. The large menu with 10% no longer offered, long wait times, and there was a thick hair in our soup. Thankfully our servers were really kind and remade it for us (suspiciously looking like the hair was taken out and then put into a new bowl, but I like to think otherwise). The dumplings were stuck to the long and ripped apart each time. But vegetables are always delicious, I love a-choy and could eat it for an entire day. The soup after the hair incident was great. And dessert always hits amazing, the coconut jelly is adorable, the osmanthus jelly is so sweet and floral. I was expecting a more subdued flavor but I really enjoyed it mixed together! (Slightly sacrilege). I've always popped by Chef Tony's whenever in the area, but unfortunately I think this will be my last. I brought my vegetarian friend thinking that usually dim sum has veggie options but there was meat in almost every dish, they have a vegetarian marker on the bottom of the menu but they also marked oyster sauce as vegetarian. I dont think i will be returning. I asked for some glasses of water when we sat down. It took asking twice and about 8 minutes until we got our glasses of water. Please note that the day we went was well over 100 degrees, so we were hot, dehydrated and thirsty. Second time I asked, I was told hang on, I'll get them (as if it wasn't their job to get us some water). As a party of 8, almost all the plates were close to or above $20. And we ordered 8 dishes. They bring out each dish as it becomes ready. They did not verify our order because when one dish came out, we thought it was made in error. The staff member said, no it's what you chose. Tips: walk into the small podium stand. Put down the number of your party and write down your own number. No one will help you with that. Walking in around 10: 50 am. We got seated at 12. Yeah thats how long the line was. Bigger party will have to wait longer. This is a small place for a dim sum. Food was okay. Because its chef Tony, you pay extra for his name. . Way overpriced dim sum but it's excepted bc of the name and we're in Arcadia. We were going to go to the Monterey Park location but opted for this one instead. This restaurant is on the smaller side. Plenty parking outside but shared with a lot of other establishments in the plaza so it can get pretty busy. It was a Friday afternoon and there was a waitlist with people waiting inside and outside. Once we got seated, none of the waiters even stopped by to check in on us. We filled out what we wanted and had to wave someone down. And now to the food: The shrimp rice noodle you can skip, they give a lot of pieces however, it's only one shrimp in one whole noodle which makes it a lot of noods and not enough shrimps. The ratio is off. The cauliflower dish was flavorful but oily, very oily. The spare ribs pieces were chunky and too big for one bite. Hard to separate the pieces too. Would I come back here for dim sum? Prob not, I think trying Chef Tony's once is good enough for me. read more
