They are now serving tables and are using real plates and silverware again. We've been coming here for years, due to the quality of their menu. In addition to the obligatory fried foods, they have a truly excellent vegetarian menu (makes the wife very happy) and the Ginger Pork with string beans is my favorite. Fresh food, not overcooked and especially not drowning in sauce. There's plenty of mediocre Chinese take out in Portland. If you're jonesing for PuPu most anywhere will do. Chia Sen has that too. But for an above average dish, come here. You won't be disappointed. The wife says the vegetarian dishes are very good and I've tried the Ginger Soy Pork. I wish soy agreed with me, I'd eat more of it here. Parking is easy, and it's close to the mall and all that shopping. Been going here for 20 years. Was a great place, but since the ownership changed, the service recently has been terrible with the quality of the food mixed. Takeout is absolute chaos: long waits (greater than 45 mins even with prepaid orders) on weeknights, wrong items given and/or things were missing. Orders come out and are put onto a table with no accounting; Doordash walking in and taking the wrong ones. Juveniles are on the register up front to run things. This "family run" restaurant is clearly not cutting it anymore. Can't blame this mismanagement on the pandemic. Sadly, we will not be returning. read more

The entire place strongly smelled of bleach, yes I know cleaning during COVID is important but the smell was overwhelming. The waiter was very rude. He was attempting to stay 6 feet away from the table but he was all but throwing our dishes on the table while doing so. Then my mother took a bite of food and pulled a long hair out of her mouth. The lady who runs the place accused her of lying and was very rude about the complaint. She stated that no females were in the kitchen yet we witnessed her enter the kitchen many times and she in fact has long hair. Best fresh authentic have gone there for years and appreciated it but this time we did take out and unfortunately the chicken was tough as if they forgot to tenderize the pieces before cooking or quality just not good. Like several other Chinese restaurants in the area, they offer their Lunch Specials (served with choice of rice and choice of soup) daily until 4PM, which is greatly appreciated since I arrived here around 3:30 PM. I ordered the Chicken Lo Mein Lunch Special ($6.25 plus tax in 2012/$6.95 plus tax in 2016) with plain fried rice and hot & sour soup. The food was hot & ready to go in about 10 minutes. I enjoyed my lunch outside since it was a nice sunny day. The portion of food was just right for a good lunch. The lo mein had good flavors (not too salty) with a mix of firm noodles, fresh vegetables and good sized slices of tender soft boneless chicken. The fried rice very good and tasted freshly prepared , which had a soft fluffy texture with a mix of peas, carrots, and eggs. no typical New England style generic dark brown fried rice served here! The hot & sour soup was good and not too spicy, plenty of tofu, egg, bamboo, and fresh mushrooms in the soup. After I was finished with the tasty lunch, I strolled into Bull Moose and "all good to go" for some power shopping for books and music. read more

There are really not a lot of quality chinese restaurants around the area, which is very surprising seeing the amount of restaurants nestled into the Portland and great portland areas and how much they pride themselves on being a foodie area. This little place is sitting in a pretty hidden spot in Scarborough, ME in between the AT&T retail store and SubWay but if you get a chance, stop in for some good and fresh chinese food. The service here at this establishment is attentive and on top of things, if they are not huddling together joking and having some fun otherwise you are fighting to get the basic refill on a glass of water or soda. Most of the times that I have frequented this place was for lunch where I usually get the wonton soup for starters, a couple of veggie egg rolls and some beef and broccoli with some fresh brown rice and I have never been disappointed. I have heard from some foodie friends that it is sometimes above par and sometimes sub par. The restroom is really small and is not kept up very much during the day where I have been in there and there have also not been paper towels to dry my hands. I think that if you are looking for some quick and fresh lunch, then Chia Sen is a good alternative to some of the fast food establishments surrounding the area in Scarborough (Taco Bell, NFC and Little Ceasars) read more

Large menu, good lunch choices. I had lemon chicken with brown rice. It was lightly fried chicken in a bright yellow, tangy lemon sauce. You could choose brown, white or fried rice. I had the brown. It was ok next time I'll try the fried. You also had your choice of wonton, hot and sour or egg drop soup. I had the hot and sour which totally helped my stuffy nose! Not good. I ordered general zao chicken and cold sesame noodles. I asked for extra spicy chicken but it had no flavor at all. It was so bland I had to add chili oil and soy sauce just to eat it. I took the fact that the container was only half full as a mixed blessing. The noodles came in a traditional paper take out box. When I opened it, I discovered that the box was only half filled with noodles and literally half of the volume was filled with shredded iceberg lettuce. So I paid over $9 for one cup of cold noodles. All in all I paid over $25 for half an appetizer and half an entree by any other restaurants standards. I don't know how they stay in business if this is what they give. There are around a dozen better Chinese restaurants within a 10 minute radius and I will never go to Chia Sen again read more

Well ... this used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant several years ago. My wife and I recently went there for the first time since about 2010. On the positive side, the portions are generous. The atmosphere was pretty standard but nice. The waiter was ok. The hot & sour soup was bland. The pu pu platter was good, but the batter on the chicken fingers was way too thick. The "Spicy General Tso's Chicken" was not spicy. The chicken was fresh but not good quality chunks. Prices were good and I may return. I've been coming to Chia Sen for over 12 years, and they're truly a favorite when I want to go to a sit in for Chinese food. No one makes house fried rice quite as good as these guys, and their crab Rangoon are delicious. Again, best I've had in Scarborough, but see my reviews on Portland locations for just as good, if not better... I compare everyone to chia sen when it comes to delicious Chinese, because I don't always have time to go to Scarborough for dinner, and chia doesn't deliver :( So, if I'm in Scarborough and someone is craving Chinese (that's usually me), this is my go to... they never disappoint and the service is always friendly! read more

So we are visiting from Florida, have had nothing but seafood since arriving. Though we'd try something different. So. We picked this place 1) because it was close to hotel, and 2) because of the reviews here on yelp. Extremely disappointing. Scallion Onion Pancakes tasted like bland fried tortillas. Couldn't even taste scallions. Coconut shrimp we very mushy inside. IMHO the only thing that reviewers hit spot on was the expense, for what you get it is a bit pricey. As far as Chinese food goes, in the Portland area, Chia Sen is going to be one of the better choices to fill your craving. I've been here for lunch a handful of times and finally enjoyed dinner there recently. We were promptly greeted and served water / tea before I could blink an eye. After we ordered we were given wonton crisps to enjoy with their house made duck sauce, which is pretty tasty (sugary yes but you don't need to slather it on). My dad said their steamed dumplings were some of the best he's ever had in his life. The dumplings are quite good, but as a heads up they are quite small and packed with good flavor. If you're looking for large dumplings you might be disappointed. I however, will take quality over size any day. Having had their cashew chicken for lunch before (around $6.00 for all of their lunch combos - definitely a good deal if you're there between 11:00 am - 4:00 pm on any given day) I knew that was what I was going to order. The entrees come with a bowl of rice and you can choose either brown, white or fried. I chose brown rice to go with my cashew chicken and my dad ordered chicken with mixed vegetables and brown rice. The cashew chicken is diced up and has small round horse chestnuts (which I love, yay!) and browned chicken, cashew pieces and veggies. The mixed chicken with veggies was good too with large pieces of white chicken meat, a decent sauce, snow peas, broccoli, carrots, etc. With pretty affordable prices and decently sized menu, Chia Sen will curb those Chinese food cravings without leaving you feeling guilty. read more

They do not offer combination platters, but for lunch chia sen offers soup, rice, and a choice of an entree. They do have vegan options and "lighter" fare aka steamed vegetables with your choice of sauce or sauce on side. The prices may be a little higher for chinese in Maine, but it is worth it.
