Important: don't go to this restaurant if you're a vegetarian. I went yesterday with a friend of mine who's vegetarian and we were told that the only item on the menu that could be made vegetarian was the Chow Mai Fun (substituting tofu for chicken). The vegetarian version of that dish was good, but it's disappointing to go to a restaurant, supposedly based on the cuisine of two predominantly vegetarian cuisines, and find only one dish that's truly vegetarian. The reason many of their dishes aren't vegetarian is due to their use of fish sauce. We also had an unfortunate customer service experience there too. We went for lunch, which started slowly, but by the time we left, the place was packed. The server/hostess had worked there for only three days and was practically in tears by the end of the lunch rush. Not her fault -- she was put into a bad situation. But our poor customer service experience came about when the owner wouldn't honor our Blue Sky Guide coupon, which was supposed to be good for half off one entree with the purchase of another. His excuse: the coupon didn't apply to lunch entree specials. Okay, fine, but what about the second part of the coupon: "or good for an order of egg rolls with a $10 food purchase." He didn't honor that either. In summary: not good for vegetarians, so-so food, and a serious disregard for ensuring that their customers have a good experience. read more

I went there the first time for some Malaysian dishes, it was fine, I even got extra "sambal" from one of the chef. Then I brought some friends there the second time and we decided to give a try on their "entres" - some chinese food that we can easily get from other chinese restaurants. We ordered 5-spice calamari as starter and got really disappointed by the small amount and inadequate taste given that price. The "curry chicken" that we ordered, turned out to be something like sweet and sour chicken, we supposed the waitress made a mistake. We also ordered "fried tofu with shittake mushroom", which is another disappointment. We could not be bother to have more rice. Overall, it was an utter disappointment. I would give this place 2.5 stars if I could. Pros - Service is good. Waiter was very nice and helpful. - Atmosphere is fine Cons - Food is below average. The chicken dish I got was way too salty. I almost had to stop eating it. My friends cauliflower was just bizarre. They coated the cauliflower with batter and fried it but not completely so it all just fell off and made everything smushy. Ate here for the first time on 3/26/10. Ordered the spring rolls for a starter and they were fantastic. Ordered the Chow Mai Fun with chicken and couldn't have been more pleased. I ordered medium spicy not too spicy, but packed some punch. If you don't like spicy order mild for sure. Great flavor, large portions. Indian and malasian variants of Chinese food, that are spicy and flavorful combined with some other flavors greet your platter. I love their chilly chicken that is super spicy. The spring roll was very nicely done too... By far the best I have had . Since the place is completely managed by the owners they actually take special care about the food. It's tucked away in the corner of Hennepin and 15th, which is why it often may not be as noticeable. My husband and I went here after deciding on local places to go that we hadn't tried yet. I have to say the 5-spice calamari was the best calamari I've ever had. lightly breaded and sauced with green onions and white onions to blend the flavors well. I then had the garlic ginger chicken which was good. The sauce was amazing, but the breaded chicken reminded me of the chicken at Leann Chin restaurant (which I haven't been to in over 7 years) and therefore didn't make me too happy. I love this place, and I will go out of my way to eat here! One of the things I love is that when you order something with spice, it is truly spicy, and consistent throughout the dish. Unlike other places in the mid-west where you just get pockets of spice, and the rest of the dish is bland. I have brought several friends here, and they have all enjoyed it. The food was good, on par with expectations: better than greasy spoon chinese, and just different enough than the 97 indian/thai restaurants in the city. The food and alcohol menu was reasonably priced which is always a bonus in my book. It is refreshing to see a menu that is not just they same old chinese american food so many places serve. Some Malay influenced food which is not so common in Minneapolis is a nice change. All the food we ordered was good. The sauce on the Garlic Ginger Chicken surprised my as I felt it taste like a sauce that would be used on fish or seafood and not chicken. Chin Dian is one of my favorite places to grab lunch. I don't think there's a thing on their menu that I've tried and not liked. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is because it's a little pricey, but not too over the top. My favorite dish is the Vietnamese Noodle Salad with tofu or mock duck, the generous bowl always comes packed full of super crunch bean sprouts, lettuce, and chilled rice noodles and an ample amount of whatever topping you choose. Add Chin Dian's secret sauce and you've got a filling and healthy lunch. One of the more decadent treats I indulge in is the shrimp toast from the appetizer menu. Shrimp baked into chewy slices of bread, battered and fried with a drizzling of sweet sauce and a sprinkling of green onion. The owners are always friendly and remember the regulars by name. Chindian is also in the Bite Squad network, so if your craving it on a cold night, it's just a click away! Bonus: Chank artwork in pretty pastels on the outside of the building! read more

Stopped by today for lunch... I was going to do take out but decided to dine in. The staff recognized my sense of urgency over the lunch hour. They took my order promptly and made sure I was always content. The food was great. I did the Madras Chicken. It had great flavor and a just the right amount of spice. I upgraded to the fried rice. The only part of the meal that wasn't absolutely amazing was the egg roll. It was a little bland but still ok. I would recommend this place to anyone! In a word, dumplings. I've traveled extensively in Asia and these were the best steamed dumplings I've had. Chow Mai Fun was good also. My dining companion agreed that this was one of our best lunches to date and we eat out often. Our waitress (fourth day on the job) was attentive and professional. Nina, the owner came out afterward and thanked us for coming in and chatted us up about upcoming promotions. Very good experience.
