Update: still really like this place but wanted to add to my review. Recently had an order that got mixed up, the delivery was the wrong food. I had ordered through grub hub and they refunded me but then China chef also called me back to apologize and offer me the same meal free in the future. Visited this place after the gym (I know, this is irrelevant and unconventional). We got some chicken wings, chicken fried rice, and egg drop soup. Every single one was average at best for my liking. I ordered the honey walnut prawns (heavy in Mayonnaise flavor which I liked), Hong Kong Style Noodles, seafood and fried rice (delicious). My wife had the Hot and Sour Soup which she said was good and the egg roll was super crispy and hot. I do have to say, this place does give you sides as a part of your order which I appreciate. We ordered over the phone and the gentleman told me it would take about 25 minutes or so. So, 25 minutes later we get to the restaurant and we had to wait about 15-20 more minutes and while it was cold outside and we were hungry, we just patiently waited because I could see the cashier running (literally) back and forth to the kitchen and register. I think it was just himself and the cook. They were nice to give complementary appetizers. We weren't expecting that, it was a nice surprise. The food was great. This is my favorite chinese-american restaurant around. They really have a great menu, with gret tasting food, and the people who work here really care about your happiness. I have ordered delivery about 4 times now, and 3/4 of the times the delivery came perfect with all the condiments, and a friendly delivery driver. 1/4 of the times the order arrived incorrect, and when I called the store they corrected the mistake immediately (after operating hours). I have been satisfied 4/4 of the times with my food, and my service. I recommend this place, for sure! read more

Now I'm sitting in my car waiting for them to make enough to fit in 2 party trays, delaying the schedule for the food to arrive at the family dinner. Can you believe this??? I have lived within walking distance of this Chinese Restaurant for 2.5 years but only been here 3 times. Maybe that is because I used to travel a lot and was never home. Now that I am traveling less, I came in again with my favorite relative. Her fave dish is Beef Chow Fun. Mine is Mapo Tofu. They have both here, and the prices are very reasonable. The Beef Chow Fun was delicious! Just the right mix of flavor, beef and fat noodles. Green and yellow onions, bean sprouts. It was served as the better dry type of this dish, not the wet type, which my Fave Relly doesn't like. (In many Chinese restaurants, they will ask you which you prefer, choose dry, unless you like a soupy mess.) The Mapo Tofu (spicy bean curd) wasn't as good. Not as hearty in spice as many other places, very bland. They didn't ask me if I wanted pork in it, which many places ask, because it can be served both ways, as a vegetarian offering, or as the more traditional Mapo Tofu with minced pork. Mapo Tofu is a famous dish in China, one with a story behind it. There are conflicting ideas about the origin of the story, or why it is called "Ma Po". A. Some say it is because of the smooth texture of the tofu against the rough bits of pork. B. One story was that a lady on the outskirts of town was famous for this delicious dish and served it to traveling merchants and others. C. A correlary to this story is that this lady had a lot of acne or a face with acne scars, so her skin was potmarked, like the tofu vs the pork. Whatever the origin, I love this dish, and it is my signature request at Chinese dive type restaurants. But here, I will go with Beef Chow Fun instead. read more

This was my first order through Deal Dash and CHINA CHEF on Colerain: Last evening, I ordered through Deal Dash the following: 2 Egg Rolls, 1 order of General Tso's chicken with medium fried rice and 1 order of chicken Pad Thai. CHINA CHEF is about 3-4 miles from my home which would take about 10 minutes depending on traffic on Colerain. I received the order in less than 30 minutes. The food was HOT, DELICIOUS and BOUNTIFUL. And did I say absolutely DELICIOUS, the sauce for General Tso's chicken was the best I have ever eaten; the egg rolls were stuffed full, and plenty of mustard, sweet and packets of soy sauces. Everything, from the start of selecting the food from Deal Dash's website (EASY) to the young women who delivered the order, I was extremely happy, will order again and very happily recommend CHINA CHEF on Colerain. She got very excited about a 20% discount, then when I went to pay, hit her calculator a bunch of times, then said, "sorry, sorry, only 10% discount" and added $2 to my bill. We eat here frequently - usually to go. The food is consistently good in our opinion. The best dishes to us are: Mongolian Beef, Honey Walnut Prawns, Beef Chow fun (we get it w/o veggies, otherwise it is mostly veggies), won ton soup and our favorite it SALT AND GARLIC CHICKEN - YUM! Prices are reasonable. I wish they delivered. They claim that they do, but apparently we are about a block from their delivery area. read more

We ordered mongolian beef, bbq pork chow mein, and mushu pork! When we got the food on the plate everything looked the same, a bunch of onions, cabbage, and brown meat. No fresh veggies! No color! All bland and boring! My husband and I both picked at our plates and had no desire to finish. We ended up throwing away a bunch of food about 3/4 of each item! It is with great sadness that I report about this restaurant, for I fear that this review might compel you to want to experience this triumph of Chinese food in the east bay area... and create long lines at what is now a favorite Chinese place. The other reviews address freshness, excellent taste, compelling prices and wonderful presentation, so I won't repeat those. This is our family's neighborhood chinese restaurant of choice. Dine in with the hokey light up waterfall scene on the wall or take out. My son covets their chicken salad and sesame chicken. I really like the eggplant. The lady who works there is so, so nice and always remembers us. We never have to wait for a seat. **update 10/15//07 Do NOT order anything in black bean sauce. Blech. My family has been going here for YEARS. We absolutely love this place. The service is good, the food is great, and it's affordable! The lunch specials are really good and cheap and come with salad and hot & sour soup. Their hot & sour soup is the best around this area. There isn't one item in the menu that I dislike. I really recommend this place! EDIT/UPDATE: My family ate here recently and we were unsatisfied for the VERY FIRST TIME. Everything was fine until they came out with our food. My brother sensed that our fried rice was spoiled and they were. They said it was fresh, but it was pretty obvious that it wasn't good anymore (very sticky, had a bad smell). They replaced it with plain rice which was not spoiled. I'm still going to eat here because I love this place and I won't let this ONE experience from YEARS of going here ruin this place for me. I used to come here years ago. Gave it another try considering Panda Express was going to be the next option. We ordered togo, picked up the food in 30 minutes. The parking lot was packed, people kept coming in for dinner which is always a good sign. Anyhow the food was great. Chicken fried rice had generous portions. Sesame chicken was moist. The garlic pepper chicken was delicious. Egg rolls weren't good. Customer service was fast and prices were reasonable. We'll make this our go to Chinese restaurant. read more

I had the pleasure of working the Holiday again. The only advantage of working, other than missing quality time with my family; is our dinner is taken care of by the company. (j/k about the Family part) The only place I can find open was China Chef and I was happy to find out that they had a 10% discount for take out orders. I had the Kung Pao Chicken and Combo Fried Rice. My colleague had the Salt and Pepper Fried Chicken. The food was good and I was able to get a Free drink with the handy Yelp check-in app. They ran out of cups so the guy put the soda in a ginormous soup cup where they would usually put the soups in.
