THE MOOD: We came to Chon Dak during the afternoon, but this place is open late, so we can see how this place can get busy later in the evening. Parking is in a lot and there is booth seating on the left side of the restaurant and table seating on the right side. You can order items on a digital menu and water is self serve at the bar. The vibe is definitely laid back where you feel like you can relax and hang out with your friends over a good hot meal. THE FOOD: I'm already drooling just thinking about the food again. We got: *Bulgogi Fries: The fries are nice and crispy and is served with a generous helping of bulgogi meat on top perfectly cooked and then... wait for it...drizzled with cheese and sweet corn. *Seafood and Green Onion Pancake: This pancake is huge! It's packed with seafood and I loved the nice crispy edges. *Roasted Fried Whole Chicken: This one was also one of my favorite items our group loved. They break down the hot fried chicken table side. I loved how light and crispy the skin was and was super surprised how tasty and juicy the chicken was! They also give you 3 dipping sauces - spicy ranch, yuzu mustard, and Korean sweet chili sauce. *Loaded combo platter: This platter comes with a wide variety of items (ramen, friend dumplings, etc.) and of course, it comes with my favorite item - tteokbokki. Great for sharing if you're in a group. *Kimchi Fried Rice: The kimchi fried rice comes with a sunny side up egg on top. From the first bite of this rice, I was already wow'd by the flavors. Finally found a Korean pub that open late in Gardena! Chondak opens daily from 3-2am . They've been in the business for 23years! It's an OG Korean Spot in Gardena. I met the owner Jennie, she is so sweet recommended me with their popular dishes, she also works really hard as a business owner and helps out cooking and serving as well. The service is 10/10 Ambiance is cozy and has plenty of seating, they have plenty of Korean food options to choose from, also different options of alcohol and non alcohol drinks! The food is soo good! The portion is big and definitely good for sharing, this is a good place to catch up with some friends and convenient since they open until 2am daily. The roasted whole chicken was soo flavorful, not soggy, crispy and has 3 different of sauces to choose from. The bulgogi fries with melted cheese is my favorite is soo tasty with crispy fries everything blended soo well. I highly recommend it, the appetizer platter is so huge and all my favorites are included like, tteokbokki, ramen, blood sausage, seaweed rolls and dumpling. I ended up at Chon Dak because I was heading to a Maroon 5 concert at the Kia Forum and wanted something nearby. With 4.5 stars on Yelp, I figured I'd be in for a hit--unfortunately, this one didn't quite make the charts. We ordered the half-and-half Korean fried chicken wings, but they came out wearing more armor than flavor--way too heavily breaded for my taste. The stir-fried bulgogi fried rice was the better of the two, but still not exactly a showstopper. I skipped the sizzling dishes like pork belly or rotisserie chicken because, well, I didn't want to smell like K-BBQ while belting "Sugar" in the crowd later that night. The restaurant itself was dimly lit, which made the tablet ordering feel a bit like trying to solve a puzzle in the dark. Personally, I prefer chatting with an actual human--it's nice to get a recommendation from someone who's not backlit. The place felt quiet, almost too quiet, and we had to wait a bit before anyone noticed us. We brought the leftovers home, but even my family wasn't too thrilled. Maybe we just ordered the wrong stuff--or maybe this was a "B-side" night for the kitchen. Either way, it didn't live up to the hype for me. Came here after visiting my family in the area. This spot has been here for years, so why not try it now? Parking: There's a medium sized parking lot, so finding a spot can be easy. Ambiance/Environment: You can tell this restaurant has been here for a long time. We were greeted right when we entered. It was empty when we visited at 5pm, but it became more busy during their dinner rush. Service: Shout out to Jenny! She was wonderful, quick, & efficient. She's very knowledgeable about the menu. She does speak English, and there were a couple Spanish speaking servers. You'd self order from the tablet and pay at the end. Menu items: 1) Whole Roast Chicken - I saw this on their social media, so I had to try this also lol. It's literally a whole chicken. Tasted really good and cooked well. It came with 3 sauces, and it tasted even better. Make sure to dip! This is shareable at least between 3-4 people. 2) Kimchi Fried Rice - My favorite side dish! Sooo delicious! We came with a party of three and were immediately greeted by the waitress! She came and walked us through the most popular items on the menu on the iPad out on the front, which which was really helpful as it was our first time eating here in in person. The ambiance was pretty typical for a late night Korean pub-style restaurant, rowdy with loud music, which is great for a night with drinks and friends. It's honestly the whole ktown experience but without the hassle of driving to ktown and needing to struggle to find parking. Here's what we ordered: - Soy Garlic Chicken wings: delicious! We've had this delivered before from Uber Eats and is actually the reason why we decided to make the drive to this restaurant to begin with. Crispy, flaky batter without that isn't dense and the chicken is piping hot and juicy on the inside. I consider myself a Korean fried chicken afficionado and I'll say this is one of the best options for it outside of ktown. Kimchi Pancake: thin and crispy! I love Korean pancakes that aren't thick and battery, so this was right up my alley. The kimchi taste works great with the pancake, and I'll definitely try the seafood pancake next time if it's done the same way. Chondak: Surprisingly, this wasn't marked as a popular item on the menu, but we felt that we had to order the restaurants namesake item. It smells AMAZING and tastes the same way it smells. Incredibly aromatic and the chicken still retains a slightly charred, crispy exterior while still being juicy on the inside. The closest comparison I can make is probably a really good yakitori! The aroma of the cheese makes even the cabbage taste amazing, and the slightly charred tteoboki was the best I've ever had. Also, try the yuzu mustard with the chicken! Spicy Tteobokki: I liked the tteobokki in the chondak dish better, but this is your standard take on tteobokki! Great if you can handle the spice - it looks spicier than it tastes! Rice: I normally don't review rice, but since some restaurants let their rice sit out all day after cooking it in the morning, I'm pleased to announce the rice here is warm and fluffy, just like it should be.
