Had an early derma appointment in Mira Mesa are so had to have a mid-morning breakfast - found Chowking next to Seafood City. Team Leader took my order with a smile. And that's just the beginning, answered my questions about the menu and felt apologetic when I ordered coffee which they don't serve. She brought my order to my table when it was ready and quick with a "thank you" when complimented. Went just now for some fried and steamed Shumai, took 30 mins to serve my order and it wasn't even busy inside the store. One of the staff said that the cook forgot to turn on the steamer. Cashier was not nice when she finally handed my order. Also, a lady customer before me had same issue with the same order. Not only did they take my order and have me wait 30min to get it, the excuse was that they forgot to cook. Customers that came after me, ordered, and paid all received their food prior to me (4-5 customers). Although through the customers perspective I saw the supervisor (we'll call him the red nose reindeer for anonymity sake), short order cooks (2), and cashiers (2 women) laughing and joking behind the counter it did not dawn on anyone to check the tickets for food. Upon receiving my food I did not receive an apology nor did I receive an explanation. It wasn't until afterwards, upon driving home and calling to speak with the supervisor that he provided me with the reasoning of "I forgot". I asked to speak with the manager. (Chips counterpart) but he was unavailable. I provided my phone number and asked for a validation back, and was notified that I would receive a call at 1pm today, an hour later I have yet to hear anything. Unapologetic, I feel the consequence for joking around and not taking a job seriously are more representative or a generation that does not value hard work or respect the customer. I went to the restroom and when I got out my sister already had my orders not bothering to check if I got all 3. When we got home I asked her where's her pancit and she said it's not on the bag. I was addicted to this place, been a customer for years since they are franchised and have it in LA as well. However, for some reason corporate decided to take away the fried rice option and change their sweet and sour sauce and thus slowly ruining my favorite fast food chicken combo. This Chow King location is attached to Seafood City, so I came here after doing some grocery shopping. You can smell the chicken cooking when you're inside the supermarket and outside passing by. The cashier was helpful in assisting me make my order. I ordered the beef stew w/ the chicken siopao. My order number was called out 10 minutes later and I went up & grabbed it. Since this is a chain, the "dishes" and utensils are flimsy. I sat by the window to watch all the passer-bys run over to Seafood City, or go to the bakery next door. The music was loud, playing Channel 933 which drove me nuts, they should invest in satellite radio. The pictures on the wall of this "ChowKing" guy holding a chicken has one eye larger than the other..... Store manager should just close this place at 9pm on Sunday. We were looking for some late night Filipino food and saw on yelp that they were open until 10pm. We get there excited and hungry at 9pm, decide what we want on the menu, and try to place our order. She stopped us mid order saying all they can serve is soup and dessert because they are "out" of everything else. Then right behind us the workers start stacking the chairs and they are just closing an hour early. What a waste of time! Never coming to this place again! read more

This restaurant is essentially the Filipino version of McDonald's, owned by Jollibee. The only two reasons people seem to eat here are: 1) it's conveniently located right next to Seafood City, and/or 2) they're middle-aged Filipino women. Our hero tried the seafood lomi, which was fairly disappointing. The noodles were too soggy and the fish paste taste was a little too strong. The restaurant should drop the "w" in their name. SIDE NOTE: I am writing this review as I'm semi curled up in the couch, suffering from a stomachache. Today, I was craving some Filipino food. Since I live in an area where there's not a lot of Asian markets, I decided to go to Chowking after I got an oil change at a nearby spot. I got a couple of asado siopao, taho and mango shake. I started drinking the shake on my way back home and ack, did it taste nasty. It was basically sugared water with some yellow food coloring. I had to stop my car to toss that thing in the garbage (I couldn't bear to have it sitting in my car any longer than necessary). As soon as I got home, I opened the taho and shared it with my friend. Another ACK!!! It did not taste good at all. Another flavored water- er, in this case, sugar, water AND tofu. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, and tried a couple more sips. It did not work, it still tasted gross. The worse part was siopao. the bottom was so soggy and the meat inside tasted old and barely cooked. I instantly had a tummy ache after having those two disgusting food. $15 for all those was too high a price for this stomach pain that I am now nursing instead of hitting the beach after a stressful day. So my advice: DO NOT COME HERE. I'm sure Red Ribbon and Goldilocks would be a better option. read more

Fried chicken will always be greasy, no getting around that but on top of that theirs is just bland, the gravy you get with it is also bland. Overall the chix just not fresh, like it's been sitting all day. First, the dude cleaning out the trash cans gives you a stare down when you combine 2 small tables for a party of 5. Then proceeds to tell another employee who is wiping the tables about it. Second, the cashier girl looks like she hates life and doesn't bother to tell or suggest trying a different option to save you money (ALL other places take the time to recommend deals). I looked up a closer location and woo hoo, didn't realize Mira Mesa had a plaza that was Filipino Central! Seafood City, Chow King, Red Ribbon, Goldilocks!! I felt so "in the know" to be dating a Filipino, haha! Anyway, Chow King is like a Filipino Panda Express except with FRIED CHICKEN! We ordered the 2 piece chicken combo, which is only $3.99 and comes with a side, rice, and gravy! The chicken is so crispy and flavorful, even licking my fingers was delicious! The side was pansit bihon, which didn't have enough veggies and was a bit too sweet so we added soy sauce. I usually don't eat my chicken with gravy but surprisingly dipped every piece of chicken in the gravy they provided. My boyfriend's favorite is their breakfast. Not sure what he ordered but it came with garlic rice (yum!), fried fish dipped in vinegar (very unique taste), sweet marinated meat, and scrambled eggs. The scrambled eggs were ordinary but everything else was a new taste for me that I enjoyed. Both our meals together was only $11!! Definitely doesn't surpass my guilt meter. =) And it got us really full, I had to struggle to finish. This didn't include a drink but everyone was getting the halo-halo drinks, which looked like Vietnamese 3 colored dessert. Next time, we'll try that! I probably won't come back specifically for their chicken but every time I'm at Chow King, I'll definitely order the fried chicken. Never coming here again. Their breakfast is a total rip off. My bf ordered the Tapa and I got the Tocino and Bangus. They gave so little food especially the tapa. They were little pieces and looked like they scraped whatever was left in their pan. Tapa and tocino were too peppery. Eggs were overcooked and rice was tasteless. I walked in asked the cashier if they had siomai which he turned to this lady which I'm assuming was his manager she had a different uniform from the other cashiers. He asked her if they had siomai in which she replied yes, she heard me ask she didn't even look at me to tell me yes we do. Then I asked the cashier how long it would take she the proceeded to talk to him and tell him mind you I was the one asking she could've answered me instead of telling him. I thought it was rude. And I LOVE bein in super lazy mode. So one day I was in my super lazy mode, I had major cravings for a Filipino breakfast- garlic rice, longanisa and tocino. A 'gal of mine took me to Gemmaes the week before and had me craving for that, but since ChowKing was closer, I was too lazy to drive all the way to Gemmaes (although I should have). Their garlic rice was DRY and I ended up throwing the longanisa away (they didnt have tocino) because it was UNDERCOOKED. The free coffee you get was thick and tasted old. I mean come on, really? How do you mess up your food when its a fast-food establishment? You want some good ole Filipino food? Hit up Gemmaes, Tems or Christys. Chow King is a very well known name in the Filipino community. My recommendation: Beef Wonton Noodle Soup. Sometimes I find the broth a little salty but it is still good. "Mami" the Chinese-Filipino noodle soup just always hits the right spot for me. For those that don't know, this is a fast-food restaurant. Hot bowls of soup, noodle dishes and rice dishes come out very fast. They also serve various breakfast plates. For a Filipino breakfast, try the sweet sausage "longanisa", sweet meat "tapa" or milkfish with eggs and rice. read more

Considering it's a fast food place, the food is pretty decent and well-priced. The food is not nearly as good as Manila Sunset Grill, for example, but I think it should be compared to other fast food type of places, and I definitely prefer this to McDonald's or Panda Express and all that. I usually get the breakfast plates (served all day) and the soups are good too. The only thing I don't like are the juices and drinks--way too sweet. We waited patiently for our to go order, after thirty minutes, only to find out when I followed up that they're about to cook my bihon order at the time I asked. Then when I got my refund receipt the man in blue ( manager?) took it out of my hand and made me wait again. The Siopao Asado couldn't be ready in 15 minutes and some order aren't readily available. Not worth visiting this kind of business. Their hours clearly says at the store front 8am-8pm and also online. Started trying to call the business at 5:45pm because i had to drive 30 mins to get there. I wanted to make sure my order was ready when i got there. Tried calling and calling and no one answered. I got to this chowking location at 6:30pm. I tried to talk to the cashier but she was trying to ignore us. Had to get her attention 3 times. So rude. Closed too early and no sense of responsibility to tell people that theyre closed over the phone and in person. Not worth visiting this kind of business. read more
