If you're looking for a cozy, mom and pop diner for a hearty brunch, look no further than Christie's! I stopped by on a weekday for a quick breakfast, and was given the choice to sit wherever I wanted. Within 20 seconds of sitting, they brought by water and offered me coffee. The service was quick and straightforward - not particularly warm and cuddly, but prompt and attentive. I loved it. As someone perpetually disappointed by the lack of skillet breakfast options at most restaurants, I was very pleasantly surprised to find a couple available here (amongst a wealth of other delectable breakfast options - I will come back to try more). I decided on Christie's Skillet, and it was brought out in about 7 minutes. The portions are VERY generous - this was one of the few times I wasn't able to finish my meal! The eggs were perfectly cooked to my liking (over easy FTW), the home fries were crispy and salty, and the linguica was deliciously seasoned. I was full until dinner. I love the variety of new and exciting dining options that continually sprout up around Burlingame. But there is something timeless and comforting about having Christie's there on the outskirts of downtown. They open at 7am every morning, and not far from SFO so if you're flying in/out early this is a great stop for breakfast. We tried Christie's skillet and the chicken fried steak. Like mentioned, the portions are huge and as much as we tried, we couldn't finish our food. Christie's skillet is yummy and refreshing with the avocado. We liked the linguica (first time trying it - tastes like Portuguese sausage). The chicken fried steak was nice and simple. The gravy was nothing special but they were generous with it and the steak was fried well. Be sure to get some freshly squeezed orange juice. At $2.75 for a small and $4 for a large (at time of posting), that's some of the best prices I've seen. And it was so sweet! Solid breakfast spot. We didn't check reviews but had I seen the pics ahead of time I would not have ordered it. It is a flat waffle, not crispy, not light or airy. We haven't been back to Christie's for a long time, and our most recent visit was a bit disappointing. We ordered the eggs florentine and a plain waffle. The eggs florentine was okay; the egg yolks were a very light yellow color (not the deep yellow or golden color you see with higher quality eggs), the english muffins were really thin and hard, and the sauce was too salty. The plain waffle was pretty bad; it was thin, not fluffy or airy, super dense, and honestly hard to eat. My mom and I come to Christies once every couple of months. Once Nini's closed down, it became my de facto breakfast place in the Peninsula. It's family owned and the wait staff always treats us well. My favorite dish is the barnyard benedict. I came by for lunch at 12pm on a Tuesday. Parking was fairly okay to find at this hour and we were seated instantly. My friend ordered the Mr. O'Malley's Benedict ($15.95) which comes with home fries or hash browns. I ordered the Italian scramble ($15.95) and it comes with their home fries or hash browns and a side of toast. We asked our waitress which should would prefer in regards to the home fries or hash browns. The way she described the home fries with all the seasonings was something we couldn't pass up, considering she said the hash browns are crispy but are pretty flavorless. We both got the home fries and I asked for sourdough toast for my scramble. Between sitting down and ordering to getting our food, it was out within 15 minutes! Talk about great fast service. The scramble had Italian sausage, onion, zucchini, tomato and was topped with parmesan cheese. I was most intrigued by this scramble because I haven't really had one with zucchini before. This scramble was very unique and tasty and something I would definitely recommend to others. It is topped with a fairly large amount of parmesan cheese for those that like cheese out there. The home fries had a slight crisp on the parts of the skin. The flavor was SO DELICIOUS! Don't skip out on the home fries! The portion is fairly large and I was able to box up the other half for the next day. As for the Mr. O'Malley's Benedict, my friend said that it was very good. There is definitely no shortage of brunch options in Burlingame. A few Saturdays ago, our group of 4 brunched at Christie's. Their inside seating was plentiful and fairly spread out as our group got seated indoors in the back of the restaurant. When it comes to brunch, I love benedicts and usually order it at any brunch spot. This time was no different. I opted for the California Benedict with homestyle potatoes. The hollandaise sauce tasted really artificial so I wiped it off and the poached eggs tasted a little off. The potatoes were more burnt than I'd prefer. A positive is that the turkey was definitely not the kind you find in pre-packaged boxes, but actually real turkey! Each person in my group enjoyed the food and maybe I ordered the wrong item. My favorites here are the garden crepe, the avocado melt, and the strawberry banana Nutella crepes are such a treat- definitely get them if you're celebrating something! They never skimp on the avocado either. I'd personally recommend the hasbrowns over their home fries (and I'm usually team home fries). I'll sometimes just get the cottage cheese or oatmeal on the side and even then the portions are very hearty and come with toppings like jam and brown sugar. You won't leave hungry just ordering one of these sides. This cafe can get very popular on the weekend, So come early or have a nice chat with your group while waiting up to 20 minutes. There is some metered parking nearby that is available if you come during a typically not busy time. There's also the Caltrain parking lot that's very close and there's almost always a spot. I hadn't been to Christie's in years so when we found ourselves in Burlingame at lunchtime I said I know the place! Unfortunately it was just meh.... It's still the cute Mom and Pop diner that it was 20 years ago, but the prices are high for what we received and honestly the food wasn't great. Very basic turkey burger and tuna sandwich both with a thin leaf of lettuce and one tomato slice. There was barely any mayo on the bread that didn't even extend to the edge of the bread, and although the tuna was flavorful, it was skimpy. Fries weren't bad, but for them not being busy I expected crispy hot fries. Just such a disappointment from the good old days when a diner served hot crispy fries and food better than you can make at home. No refill on soda and never checked if we wanted more water.
