Great option for Tex-Mex. I've been coming to this location for years and I absolutely love the design of the building add the Acapulco style with thatched hut roofs. The interior has a super cool design with metal sculpture palm trees everywhere throughout the interior. The food is typical Tex-Mex which is high in carbs and fat but it's okay for a cheat day. I go more for the experience than the food. Food is good but not the highlight of the experience. Margaritas are good and so are the nachos. The chips are thin and crisp. They have this jalapeño creamy dip that's so yummy that they bring out with complimentary chips to the table. The veggie enchiladas that I ordered were so stuffed. I was only able to eat one out of the two! They mark their meatless choices in the menu. The bean and cheese nachos were good. The food was hot. Flavor was there. Stopped here with the fam while visiting San Antonio. We knew the cheese and nacho bar was no longer being offered and though it made us a little sad, it was understandable. We were a party of 7 and we were seated right away. The decor is very festive and I loved the selection of t-shirts for sale. The hostess and our server were very sweet. Our server was extremely attentive and kept checking on us , bringing us extra napkins, more chips, etc. I really liked my deluxe chicken enchiladas. The entire group loved their food. Okay, this might be our next favorite Mexican restaurant! The food was awesome, we loved all the sauce choices! The chips were light and crispy! The place was bright and cheery and family friendly. Our server was kind and explained all our options. We have one complaint. I need to add here that what drew us to Chuy's in the first place was THE CHURROS! It's hard to find those! We ordered TWO orders and were so excited... only to discover our "churros" had zero flavor. It was just fried dough. No cinnamon. No sugar. No sweetness. Unfortunately there was a fly in my water cup. That was the start of what turned out to be a very plain tasting and not-so-great food experience. Plates were hot, but food was cold, which means they sat in the window. I could understand because we had a large party but there were only a dozen guests throughout the entire restaurant during our meal. So kitchen staff shouldn't have been slammed by any means. Food was basic. No pop of flavor. Shrimp Baja tacos were dry, but saved by the creamy jalapeño sauce I added. Wife's burrito was soggy, and lacked general flavor or freshness. Kids quesadillas were made with basic American cheese. If you're a Mexican restaurant and not using Mexican cheeses to make a quesadilla, then there's not much I can add to save you. It was my last night out in Texas and I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do for dinner. Chuy's came up and the food look pretty delicious so I thought I'd take a trip. My grandma taught me one thing about Mexican food and that's if the parking lot is full and the restaurant is full when it's got to be good. It was also really nice to walk in and see that they made their own tortillas they were so delicious. I would recommend anyone that came to San Antonio to stop by chuy's they have some great shirts too. 1 Atmosphere-the restaurant had a very tiki cantina vibe to it, they played good music and have an outdoor patio a pretty awesome looking bar. It's great for families and friends and I have the spot where it's open and you can see them making homemade tortillas which is kind of cool. 2 Service- the host is really awesome he was a really cool guy very attentive very personable. The hostesses upfront were also really nice and got me seated right away. 3 Food- I started off with the chicken tortilla soup and it was with green chile and was very very delicious. Sometimes you get jipped on the chicken but not with this soup. the chips and salsa was really good as well they also had this kind of cilantro lime or maybe ranch sauce that was really good. I got the fajitas after that and those were stupid good the meat had a lot of flavor it was very tender. I couldn't really fit it but I decided to go for it anyways I want for the tres leches cake and honestly it was well worth it. We ordered curbside due to the great pandemic of 2020 that will go down in history. We have never ordered curbside before so we didn't know what to expect. I was skeptical since I would rather eat at the restaurant than haul it all the way home (25 min drive) with it getting cold and soggy. But the wife wanted something other than fast food and this was her choice. Who am I to deny her wishes when we are locked away together without seeing other faces for weeks on end. I'm not the brightest bulb in the box but I value my safety and well being enough to not deny her. This went very well and the trip over was shorter than usual since everyone else is staying home and not messing up the roads with their insane driving. The meal came out quickly and we were on our way. The various sauces and queso were in separate containers so as not to make our Chuychangas soggy. It was a very pleasant change and the food was great. It was more than enough food and we were able to make 2 meals out of it which is a big plus in these marathon days of figuring out what to eat or cook almost every meal. First time to a Chuy's! My wife had said that the sauce here was soooo good! I do have to say, it was very good. They call it their home made crème I do believe. I didn't get any of their drinks as I am steering away from those for now... The food was really good, I had the Tacos Carbon which I would have liked a little char on it but I think they cook it in a kitchen and not necessarily in a grill. The waiter was attentive but not totally enthusiastic I guess would be the word for it. Not horrible service just kinda bland. The beans and rice it was served with were good! We also ordered queso (delicious!) and margaritas (also delicious!). We started coming to this location because it doesn't get as busy so the wait time isn't crazy. Also the servers have always been great! As a vegetarian I always order the Classic Tex-Mex with Ranchero sauce (vegetarian friendly) and side of rice and refried beans (vegetarian friendly). The food is typical Tex mex but it's consistent and I like that. I think they throw the food in an oven because every time my plate comes out the plate itself is very hot. This makes me think they put it in a oven. I like their complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa has a bit of a kick to it and it's chunky. The chips are thin and usually crunchy. I actually really like Chuy's as a whole and have been going to their restaurants for years. Have I had a few bumpy experiences along the way? Sure, but overall they have solid, freshly made Tex-Mex and good margaritas. Since this location is the closest to home, we stop here frequently and for the last 6 months or so have run into one very specific problem, the tortillas, or lack thereof. Stick with me here. Tortillas are one of the best parts of the meal and all Chuy's locations have a comal and usually at least a couple people dedicated to making the tortillas fresh all day. My kid loves, and will only eat, the beans, rice, and flour tortillas from Chuy's. However, this particular location #1 will not sell their tortillas only anymore (or even give you extra ones when you ask), and #2 when I do get tortillas as part of another dish, more than 50% of the time, they are misshapen, have holes in them, are over cooked or otherwise just plain bad. The quality control is crap. We've complained but the problem is not getting better as last night was another batch of tortillas that looked like Swiss cheese. How am I supposed to eat a taco with holes in it? First world probs, I know. We stopped at the Chuy's location in Universal City last week, and guess what? Extra tortillas were an option on their online order form! We got a dozen, and not one of them had random holes or rips in them! It was great! One of our plates was wrong, we told her that was fine, just make sure we got charged for what we got not what we ordered. Kolin went to a manager and only charged me for half of the wrong entree. I was served at the bar with chips and some of the best fresh salsa I've ever had and I don't know what the white sauces that came beside it, but I could literally chug it by the gallon. He had a great punch to it and great flavor just had a lot of ice unfortunately for an appetizer I ordered the guacamole and I was really let down for a pretty hefty price I only got four small scoops of guacamole, but yes, tasted fresh, but there was so much lettuce on the bottom. I don't understand why there's lettuce on the bottom of a guacamole bowl, I ordered the steak burrito that came with rice and beans and I ordered the Hatch made green chili to go on top. The bartender told me that the Hatch meat green chili was supposed to be really spicy so I really wanted that when I got was kind of disappointing, there was hardly any steak in the steak burrito half of what I thought would even be in it in the green chili had zero heat and zero flavor. I was really hoping for that pack a punch, smack in your face heat with some bold flavoring, and I definitely did not get that. The steak inside was nice and tender though which was very pleasant the rice was nothing special and the beans were the same. I would immediately give this place a five star if they better price of guacamole, and did not put lettuce in it and if they're green chili actually held up to what I was told it was going to be and the steak burrito actually have a decent amount of steak and it. I'll come right out and say that the food here is always tasty and craveworthy -- especially that jalapeño ranch dip with hot, salty tortilla chips, am I right? The three stars is for the consistent laissez-faire service that seems to just be present at every location. But since we're talking food, here's what I love. If you're not a meat eater, you and Chuy's will go together like rice and beans, or chips and salsa. And that's because Chuy's makes some very delicious, spicy, flavorful vegetarian charro beans complete with green chilis, onion, tomatoes and all of the Mexican fixings. It's definitely the draw for me, although it's best on the side of a vegetarian combination plate number seven, which is half of a ranchero covered Chile relleno stuffed with melty cheese and half of a spicy, saucy roja enchilada. I feel right at home when dining out with my carnivorous friends. As for the service, my experience with the wait staff has been poor. I don't know if it's a training or management issue, but often times our waiter seems totally frazzled, which leads to forgetting parts of our meals or straight up disappearing for a good while. The ambience is shall we say...campy and chaotic? License plates and Christmas lights will tell you all you need to know. 5 star alert! Lou is amazing! Service: to the owners of this location Lou (manager) goes above and beyond to make you feel like you are at home. This is my first time every visiting chuys. I have somehow never tried. Let me tell you what Lou is the man. He will make sure you order is right and your food tasting good and fresh. Good: I ordered the steak burrito and it was really good. The dipping Sauce he suggested made it taste even better. The Fajita steak is full of flavor and the cheese is just as tasty. Will I come back? Yes! Not sure why this place has 3.5 stars.
