Walked over to the neighborhood diner for breakfast today. My cousin said it was a good spot, been there in Eagle Rock for some time, plus I love diner foods. It was pretty tasty overall and I'm glad I went but my overall experience fell slightly flat. Pros: - located off of Colorado blvd for easy access with parking out front. - indoor seating and 4 patio tables for outside. - food was solid and tasty :) breakfast food is not hard IMO. The homemade sausage patties were yummy. - the food was a good amount for me. I was full but didn't feel stuffed. Cons: - this is a strange con (even to me) but the syrup for the pancake was different. It had a strong honey flavor to it. Now, in case maybe you're thinking it was simply honey- it had a syrup texture so I'm fairly confident it wasn't just a serving of honey. But either way, apparently I didn't like it. I would have preferred a maple taste or that cheap artificial syrup taste haha. - this seems picky as well, but here goes, they saw I had my dog with me and no staff offered any water for the pup. I realize that's not a requirement but I appreciate when servers do ask since animals get thirsty too. - and lastly, service for me on the outside seating was sparse. No refill, I asked for ketchup and it never came, server didn't ask how I was doing. There were other folks outside with a different server who seemed more engaged. read more

There's always that one restaurant that you drove by for years and you always say, "we gotta eat there one of these days". Well today was the day and it didn't disappoint. Living around the Glendale/Eagle Rock area for most of my life and have driven past Cindy's thousands of times. Finally we took the leap and actually stopped. I just love the 70s diner feel with the mismatched color scheme walls, counter, pie case and kitchen tucked away in the back. The menu is a two-pager and many lovely items to choose from. Since we went around 1 pm, we opted for the brunch menu items. Avocado toast and egg sandwich with smoked pork was the choice and both were great! The potatoes that came with the sandwiches were hearty pieces of potato mixed with onions and spices; crispy and delicious. The avocado toast was probably one of the best I've had and that lacquered bacon was out of this world. I think if it wasn't for the bacon, the sandwich would just be a good sandwich. My egg sandwich with the smoked pork was filling and well worth the extra price to add the smoked pork. Again, if it wasn't for the smoked pork, it would have been an ok sandwich. They have plenty of cakes and pies for dessert but honestly, the sandwiches were quite filling. Next time just a nice cup of coffee and a slice of pie. Ambiance 10/10 Service 9/10 Cleanliness 9/10 Bathrooms 9/10 Food 9/10 Value 8/10 Will I Return? Yes and for the Derby pie made with pecans, chocolate and bourbon! read more

In town from Baltimore visiting my partner's daughter who lives in South Pas, we stayed in an airbnb in Eagle Rock for a long weekend. We ate at a number of different places along Colorado Ave, all within walking distance, mostly breakfast but a few lunches too. This place is nice, service is friendly, food basic but good and portions are substantial. Coffee was also basic but refills were prompt. House-made sausage was mildly spicy, somewhat unremarkable. It's a good breakfast. read more

A good Dine-in diner with some elevated classics! Reflective of the times, this place boasts a 50s feel and is a hit with the locals! We all got different dishes and I had a bite of all of them- it was all good! When we came around for lunch, it was packed and loud! So you know it's going to be some good grub! There's parking on site, but it is limited. Soild diner, in a trendy area, good prices, yummy food, in a place that feels like a slice of history! read more

The French toast with the bourbon bananas was pretty good. Everything else was fine. Nothing special. We tried 4 different pies and the Dr. Pepper cake and, again, nothing special. Frozen pie from the store would have been as good if not better. Also, the menu costs are crazy. $1.75 to add chocolate chips to the waffles and then you get about 12 chips? $1.00 to make your potatoes crispy? That's crazy. The service was as eh as everything else. read more

My first time here. There are hardly any diners any more but this place looks and feels like a diner. My son loved his grilled cheese (classic diner fare). I had a bowl of gumbo and a sweet potato biscuit on the side. Both were great. (Forgot to take a picture before we finished our lunch.) They serve decaf coffee in the afternoon. A pet peeve of mine is when restaurants stop serving decaf after noon. Good job on the all day decaf! We finished with banana cream pie for dessert. read more

Ordered the turkey burger came with a salad with a dressing all ready added. Food was very good i did enjoy it. Service was ok surprisingly they were not very busy. This place can be very hard to get into in the past it was to busy for is to stope. A bit pricey but what isn't. Lemonade come out of a plastic bottle like it was something that got all Walmart. All in all i do recommend Cindy's the food was very tasty. read more

Wonderful diner in Eagle Rock. I felt like I was stepping back in time. Comfy orange vinyl booths with a well-stocked assortment of jellies and sauces on the table. Classic diner experience with straightforward service and food. At some point there was a switch in ownership, which is why I felt comfortable stepping inside. (Like within the last 10 years not 10 months) Since I'm gluten free I stuck with scrambled eggs, potatoes and sausage patties. Hold the toast, please! This is such a difficult review. I really, really, really wanted to like this place. It's been in my neighborhood must try's. Let's start with the good. The service. We had an awesome experience. Our server was attentive and friendly. Now the bad: the most important thing. The food. The chilaquiles were a flat 1 star for me. The food was missing flavor. This is where 1950 restaurants meets year 2200 healthy recipes. I mean I wish I had smellovision on our phones . The food was amazing for first time in restaurant I looked at other people foods to see and smell it . They have healthy choices yet it's a retro restaurant with futuristic plates . Fruits , light of everything including chorizo do you don't feel heavy but happy at the end . Guy next to me had French toast with scrambled and fruits it smells amazing and was light. I had breakfast chorizo and it was good. Interior is a1950s orange with bar style and booths. Very clean and nice little bit small but it was ok it's part of its character. I can't believe I grew up in Glendale and never check this place next door in Eagle rock. Staff were so helpful and respectful. Atmosphere were great both guests and personnel wise. But it was kind of loud. I'll get in to it at end . Restrooms clean. Could use some remodeling touch ups. Absolutely recommended for breakfast, for rest of the day maybe ok. Things could use improvement 1 . Kitchen was loud so people starts screaming to hear each other . If u fix one the other will be fixed automatically. Also, some sound dampening panels on ceiling will reduces the noise dramatically. Addition to that sound systems was a portable boom box which added to sound problems now you have 3 noisemakers sources. 2 . Music , more matching music with interior and better sound system or no music at all. 3. Wi-Fi for costumer use because some cellular networks absolutely don't work in that area. Cute Retro Hipster-ish Diner. I didn't love this place for breakfast options. The menu is limited compared to other diners offering classic all-American breakfast favorites. Usually, I don't mind a modern/unique twist on breakfast classics which they do here. In short, our food just wasn't tasty. It's pretty hard to mess up breakfast, so perhaps the kitchen crew was overwhelmed. This was the only place near me on New Year's Eve that was open for breakfast. The lunch and dinner options looks more appealing and so are their homemade pies. read more

I love this place! Went recently for my brother's birthday. There's a variety of delicious food. Ample parking. Friendly team members. Fresh pie. I don't know what coffee they have but it's soooo good! I didn't know they were affiliated with Fox's in Altadena. Seeing their "We Love Altadena" window dressing brought tears to my eyes. That's my hood. Meant a lot to see that. I haven't had a bad meal there. I've only gotten breakfast there. You can't go wrong! Highly recommend if you haven't been. read more

Cindy's diner in Eagle Rock is certainly a landmark establishment. From the multiple films and television shows that have been filmed here to the classic mid century decor, Cindy's has made its mark in the area. The menu offers quite a bit of variety when it comes to breakfast and lunch options. If 24 hour breakfast is your reason for heading out to a diner, then you may be a little disappointed, as Cindy's only has a limited breakfast option in the afternoon. My go-to has become grilled cheese and tomato soup. I challenge you to find a better and more flavorful combo. The assortment of pies gives all you could ask for in a good diner's pie selection. Yes, they have key lime and banana cream pie. The service has always been friendly as long as we've been there. They do run a short staff, so if it's busy you may have to wait a little longer than you'd like to have the server be able to make the round back to you, but the whole experience is worth it and not a huge deal in my opinion. Not only is Eagle Rock a great area that is certainly on the rise, but it has some great food spots and Cindy's is definitely on the list. read more

Finally was able to stop in. I had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. Poof all gone! No chance to take photos. I have a problem with geen bell peppers, so I may get haunted by this later. It will be worth it! So delicious. They also had carrot cake. I controlled myself, only had half!! Really enjoyed. The frosting was not overly sweet and the cake itself was very moist. Lots of carrots and I could taste the ginger. Just perfect for me! read more

This a good breakfast spot and I would come back again. About a week ago a fellow cohort and I decided to grab breakfast after an early morning exam. When my friend said she knew a spot to eat I was excited to be able to try something new. Cindy's Restaurant is a small American-style diner located off of Colorado Blvd with a retro feel, and from what I understand, breakfast/brunch is the time of day to go there. At the urging of my friend, I was told to try the fried egg breakfast sandwich with smoked pork. I ordered the fried egg breakfast sandwich with smoked pork, but the waiter said that they were out of pork so I ordered the brisket sandwich. Fried egg breakfast sandwich with brisket: 5 stars! Cheddar, hot sauce mayo, griddled tomato, fried egg on toast?! Yes please! The sandwich was quite filling and I ordered a side of house salsa which was delicious. I requested my house potatoes be cooked 'extra crispy' and they too were delicious! Crispy chunks of potatoes and perfectly crisped/fried onions made these house potatoes 5 stars! With or without ketchup - you can't go wrong. Service: 5 stars. Friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient staff. What else can I say? I look forward to coming back to this establishment. read more

Been driving by this small dinner for years and finally decided to stop by today with my son. It's a Sunday and it's a full house here today. The wait time was around 10 minutes. The dinner has a nice retro vibe and I love the atmosphere. We order the eggs Benedict and the creole shrimp omelette and a slice of derby pie, food was absolutely delicious . I must say that if ur a little on the plus size like I am the counter seats are not comfortable, we did request a table and he waiter complied immediately. I gave them a 4 coz service was a little slow due to the amount of patrons but other wise I'd give a 4.5 read more

Went here on a Sunday morning and had Danielle as a waitress. She was really good at spotting when people needed things or were ready to order. Overall very nice person. Food was amazing and decently priced for what I had. Ambiance was good despite their speaker not being available. Definitely coming back soon! Their gumbo was amazing. read more

We went to Cindy's about 11 AM on a weekday. The service was fine and the eggs were just OK. The biggest concern however, was the noise level. Extremely loud and hard to carry on a conversation. Nothing they can do about that though. Just the way it is. read more

I've been going to Cindy's a long time. It has been awhile and I decided to stop by for breakfast. The atmosphere is fantastic. Full of customers and kids. I got seated right away and I was excited. I sat there for about 7 minutes before anyone came over. By then I definitely knew what I wanted so I ordered. My coffee was brought over by this hipster boy who I noticed sort of just stood around. Someone else brought my food but he placed it across the table which was weird. I noticed that the home fries portion was small and when I tasted it was raw. I was out of coffee so I saw there and tried to flag down someone to give me a refill. I finally got the lovely hostess to get me coffee and I told her that no one has come by. This is not a big place. I noticed my server is always by the computer by the kitchen or standing there talking to to other staff but she rarely stepped out to interact with customers. After I got my refill she happened to be passing by and asked how was everything. This was a good 10-15 mins after I received my food. I told her that I was waiting for coffee and she said "well we're busy". My omelette was really oily from the green sauce they put on it. Later she came by and I asked about the home fries being raw. The onions and potatoes were both raw so I didn't eat them. She said "well they're sautéed so they're supposed to be like that". Not true. I always eat home fries and I love the crispiness. As I was writing this review three staff tried to clear me out. I've only been here for 20 mins (I had an appointment". So it was a sad morning to come to Cindy's. Poor service. Poor food. I I only got one refill of coffee too. All that for $20+. read more

We always keep trying to come back 3rd time in a row (we live here in Eagle Rock) but all the staff are always so rude, they all seem so rushed as you are not their concern and as another review stated, treat people so inconsistent. Just simply unfriendly. The food is ok, little rice with our dish and cold hard over toasted toast, and hard as a rock inedible brisket (and when brought to their attention, they act like it is an inconvenience) they should never serve food like that! Prices are too high for what you get! read more

When we asked for utensils they didn't have any forks so they gave us one spoon and one knife. We made it work. A professional would have said "I apologize, where would you prefer to sit? I see you made a reservation, are celebrating an event and we had some unexpected guests for seating options." The meat was juicy but I was left wanting more flavour in both the meat and the buns. I also wish the bottoms were a bit crispier. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to try their breakfast menu and other items though. Because peeking at the other tables they offerings looked delicious.

Let me start with parking--extremely tight on a Saturday morning. The place was packed. It wasn't unbearably loud, but definitely loud enough to notice. I decided to sit at the bar since I came alone, and most of the tables were filled with families. Even the bar was crowded, though, and the lady sitting next to me was way too close--like, close enough to kiss. But that's another story. So, here's the deal: I'm an older Black man. When I walked in, everyone looked at me. I wasn't being paranoid--it's just what happened. Didn't bother me, though. I found a seat and settled in. The staff? They all looked like your typical liberal college kids. Eventually, a Mexican guy came over and asked if I wanted a drink. I asked for hot chocolate, but they don't serve that. No big deal. I ordered shrimp and grits instead. Now, let me tell you--if you're from the hood or the South, shrimp and grits are supposed to be everything. Rich, flavorful, something to savor. What I got? Shrimp and grits soup. It came swimming in some kind of broth, loaded with onions, drowning the grits. It didn't even look good, but I decided to give it a try. Big mistake. The shrimp was decent, but the rest? Straight trash. I barely made it through three bites and left the rest. And get this--I paid $25 for that mess. The service wasn't much better. The dish normally comes with mushrooms, which I'm allergic to, so I specifically told them no mushrooms. The first plate they brought out? Full of mushrooms. They took it back, but I had to wait another 20 minutes for a replacement. The servers weren't particularly friendly, either--it felt like that kind of forced friendliness because, well, they have to. Meanwhile, the lady sitting next to me had smothered potatoes that smelled amazing. She lets you know the place just reopened under new owners and staff, and that new places need to iron out issues, yet she complains about "spotty" service. New place, not even open two full days. The coffee was bitter? New place, not even open two full days. The coffee is from Jone's Coffee in Pasadena. It's not the watery Stuckey's coffee you get at most greasy spoons. It's for coffee drinkers. She mentioned the previous owners and she liked the prices and portions. No mention of the food from the old Cindy's which was tasteless and forgettable. If you want portions and prices, stick to Carrows. I have been to this new Cindy's for breakfast and lunch on two separate days. The brisket hash was awesome, with great flavor and just enough spice to make my nose run. The pulled pork sandwich for lunch was also really good, and the gumbo made me want to buy a bucket of it to take home. My friend had the catfish Po-boy and raved about it. Apparently there have already been locals who've returned several times, and they've only been open three days. I've already noticed improvements in the staff, but like Meg stated, you need time to iron out the wrinkles. With most new restaurants, you usually want to wait a month before passing judgement, but I couldn't wait after the unearned three stars. This is a new restaurant with a twist on diner food (ie, has flavor beyond the salt and hot sauce you need to pour on Denny's "food"). Eagle Rock and Highland Park are becoming the new Silverlake and Los Feliz, and places like Cindy's (and the other new places on York and Colorado) are really classing the places up. read more

Our go to neighborhood bagel place, probably the best bagels I have ever had, I am including all of the bagels I've also had in New York. I try to get here before 9am, after 9 this place gets really busy. The fries were good though and ended up being the best part of the meal. They also didn't have many sugar free drink options, just Diet Coke and unsweetened iced tea. I went with the iced tea. The total came out to a little over $32. If the pastrami sandwich had been good, I wouldn't have minded paying that much, but unfortunately it was just mediocre. I don't see myself coming back, and this is probably why I'd only been here once before.
