I like everything about the place except for the barbeque. It's a good strategy to have a soft opening with free food to get some 5 star ratings on Yelp. People are a bit more critical when you actual shell out your own money. I ordered the "Light Lunch" option today - brisket with two sides - Collards and Gumbo. Dining companion had pulled pork, mac&cheese and green beans. The sandwiches are very small - like sliders. I don't have a problem with that as I think most restaurant portions are waay too large and I typically end up with a to-go box. The problem was the food. The brisket was more of a pulled, glomped together style than slice of meat. At first I thought I had gotten the pulled pork order. It was so fatty is was inedible. I pulled the greasy buns apart and it was 50% fat. This was not "marbling," these were the pieces you cut off the brisket and don't serve. The texture was gross. The sides were good but very, very salty. The Collards had tons of pork in them, good flavor and the right spiciness - but too much salt. I drove 30min to visit your 2511 Blackmon Dr location and was very disappointed. I arrived at 7:45pm on Saturday, 1/4/25. I noticed about three customers in line above me, once they got to the register, they just left out the door and did not place their order. When I got to the register to order the first thing the cashier said is we are out of ribs and bone-in chicken. Well, I drove to get the brisket chili, but as soon as I ordered it the cashier said we are also out of chili. This is horrible management of how much food is needed on a Saturday evening. In these unprecedented times of social distance issues and safety precautions finally at a high, it was so nice to have a added choice for good BBQ. I'm not sure why or where it came from but I love BBQ, mac n cheese, Carolina BBQ sauce, collard greens, and sweet tea. Needless to say this was my order with the likes of peach cobbler and banana pudding. Also to note, I was not alone eating all of this. The pulled pork, seasoned nicely. There's nothing more of a let down than some beautifully plated, sweet-smoked-smelling meat and BOOM, no flavor. It's just disrespectful. Shouting from the mountain top, SEASON YOUR MEAT! You're going to go home happy. It's their mission to make sure this happens. I've had the good fortune to visit City Barbecue twice. Both visits were absolutely excellent. Staff here genuinely wants to make sure you're happy. On my first visit, the manager was especially kind to my tired party. She personally saw to it that we were taken care of right, even as it was late, even as the place was getting ready to close for the day. First, let me get past the name. "City Barbecue" just seemed wrong to me. I have this weird idea that barbecue cannot be urban, must be done in the spirit of all good things rural, and may even involve hiding out in the woods, enjoying some spectacular blues music, (and maybe even some moonshine) while you stir a giant pot of Brunswick Stew with a broomstick. Clearly I am wrong. These folks make some excellent food. The first time I went, I had the Brisket Sandwich with some Hush Puppies and some Gumbo. Everything on that plate was excellent. The meat was cooked just right. Tender, smoky, and you've got a selection of quite a few sauces to please your palate. (If you're into that kind of thing.) They've got hot, sweet, vinegary, original, and a few other things, to boot. But let me underline the excellence of those hush puppies. Lightly crisp and crunchy on the outside, dense and hearty on the inside. Made with some sweet onions, these things are an absolute winner. I would go back JUST for the hush puppies. They are that good. The gumbo is more of a stew. It was thick and hearty. I get the idea it's something of a seasonal/temporary item. It is worth checking out if you're as appreciative of gumbo as I am. The second time I visited, I had a two item combo with ribs, beef brisket, some green beans, and more of those crowd-pleasing hush-puppies. Let me tell you, the amount of food on that plate might feed three people. (It would easily feed two people.) Delicious brisket. And the ribs were really quite good, too. Before I entered I remarked that I didn't think the Barbeque would be that good because of the side of town it was on, I presumed it wouldn't be very flavorful or soulful. I'm so happy I was mistaking! This place is fire! Hopefully, I will be back again! My guest and I shared the city sampler with baked beans and mac and cheese which feeds 2 people. It was delicious, very flavorful. and I'm still full like 4-5 hours later. Enjoyed the bourbon mixed bbq sauce in particular. We also had the peach cobbler and banana pudding which were good. Update to review as city bbq has changed sadly. My favorite cole slaw is no longer on the menu as well as the apple cidar vinaigrette dressing i used to look forward to on their salads. Those were two of the best and more healthier items the menu, gone forever it seems. Why? The service ised to be friendly and warm, now seemingly ever present heavy set girl at the register doesn't even greet you or say hi... like ever. It leave such a bad taste in my mouth, i dont go out of my way to visit like i used to once a week. Service has dropped everywhere since the pandemic but this is so drastic since they were known for their friendliness. Food is still good but all portions have gotten smaller and they no longer serve the pickles on the side that were so delicious. The staff is lack luster and seems lazy if im being totally honest. Today , Feb 1 2024, I ordered two sandwiches - sliced beef brisket and pulled pork to go. The sliced beef was pretty good. The pulled pork was mostly big clumps of fat. They need to establish some standards on the quality of the sandwiches and initiate some quality checks. I came to City Barbeque on a solo venture. It was the 4th of July so it was packed with patrons. The line was long but to my surprise it moved quite swiftly. I ordered the Turkey Breast with Baked Beans and Potato Salad. The Turkey was moist but had no seasoning on it. Luckily this barbecue joint is equipped with a variety of barbecue sauces to add a kick of sweet, savory, or heat to your meat. The baked beans were standard, not too bland & not too sweet. The potato salad could use a little hint more is sweet relish or sugar. In from the South & that's how we like it!lol Overall, the BBQ joint hits the spot. Decent food, mediocre service, messy and unkempt interior as well as patio. During my first visit a while ago, we were not greeted upon arrival and were treated as more of a burden than anything. We were rushed to order our food it seems like all of the employees were having a bad day. Like I said, it was my first visit and I had assumed they bring the food to you. They do not. We sat outside (it wasn't busy at all, we just wanted some fresh). We waited 20 minutes outside, until I realized that it was a possibility that I'd have to take me own food from the counter. Of course by the time I got my food it was lukewarm. The sauce bottles were covered in sauce and sticky. On the patio and inside, there were napkins, crumbs, and grease everywhere you could imagine. Located in the new Sprouts Farmer's Market strip, City Barbecue can be found on the side where Scott Blvd rests. Parking is shared here, so a spot is usually easy to find, and it's a new, clean area both inside and out. I got a to go order and ordered their pick 2 meats combo ($14.99). This combo gives you 2 meats to select and also 2 sides. Texas toast comes with on the house. So what meats and sides did I get? Let's start with their ribs. These were meaty, tender and pretty flavorful. With the 2 meats plate you get 3 rib bones. Let me tell you, that's good enough to fill up most. The sauce for me was far sweeter than I would like. I had original and sweet sauce, and I knew I was in trouble when the regular sauce was sweet....because the sweet sauce was like liquid brown sugar, so beware! My second meat was the pulled pork. With this, I can't be mad at them because they piled it on. There was SO much pulled pork, that I ate half of it, and was able to make a full pulled pork sandwich out of it for lunch the next day, so you get your money's worth! The meat itself is VERY tender, but the flavor on this meat was almost non-existent. It pretty much demanded some form of bbq sauce, so I did add a bit of it, and it worked for the pulled pork! Sides I ordered were their baked beans with brisket chunks. These were good! A little on the sweet side, but definitely nice flavor to them. I also ordered potato salad, and these were devoured. Nice, tasty potato salad! Customer service here at City Barbeque is great, and they have no problems giving you a sample of their meats. I actually made the comment "oh this is a REAL sample!" because the beef brisket I tried was a very nice slice of it where you get a real sampling. Nice on that guys! I like City Barbeque. It's quick, flavorful and the benefit is downloading the app gets you $5 knocked off of your meal. Hard to beat that! This is also a chain so if not this location, there are other locations you can hit and enjoy the food, though this new location has a very nice interior for you to dine and enjoy. Neither of us could finish our sandwich they weren't even that big they were just packed full of juicy, tender meat and we added peppers and onions. While in the area I drove past City Barbeque and although one of my favorites is right up the street I love bbq and felt that I should double back and try this new restaurant out, so I did. City Barbeque is located right behind Sprouts in a small shopping center next to Zoe's. There is plenty of free parking. I walked in and the ambiance was casual and friendly. There is a large menu on the wall that makes it easy to figure out what you will order while standing in line. The menu is easy to read they offer beef, pork, turkey and chicken, unless you are a vegetarian you should be able to find something on the menu that you can eat. For those heath conscious folks like me, next to each menu item the calorie count is listed. I wish I could have tried the Green beans or Collards but both contain Pork which I don't eat. Thankfully they give you a heads up that they use pork in certain items, showing that they understand that everyone does not share the same diet ( Fast hand clap). The staff was amicable, prices are reasonable and ordering was easy. I ordered the pulled Chicken with a bun and the hand cut fries. Their hand cut fries were seasoned to perfection and absolutely delicious I could have shared my fries due to the large portion. The pulled Chicken was juicy and they had about 10 sauces to choose from. I ordered to go and since I had never tasted their sauces before instead of getting packs of sauce to go I went to the fix'ns bar and grabbed a few from there.
