In these unprecedented times of social distance issues and safety precautions finally at a high, it was so nice to have a added choice for good BBQ. I'm not sure why or where it came from but I love BBQ, mac n cheese, Carolina BBQ sauce, collard greens, and sweet tea. Needless to say this was my order with the likes of peach cobbler and banana pudding. Also to note, I was not alone eating all of this. The pulled pork, seasoned nicely. There's nothing more of a let down than some beautifully plated, sweet-smoked-smelling meat and BOOM, no flavor. It's just disrespectful. Shouting from the mountain top, SEASON YOUR MEAT! Thank you to these people. The ribs were basically fall off the bone but not overly done making it mush. I could actually chew it. Tasted fabulous. I'll be happy to return for some. The brisket, the brisket. Tender, just enough chew for enjoyment, and the fatty nature wasn't over bearing. Update to review as city bbq has changed sadly. My favorite cole slaw is no longer on the menu as well as the apple cidar vinaigrette dressing i used to look forward to on their salads. Those were two of the best and more healthier items the menu, gone forever it seems. Why? The service ised to be friendly and warm, now seemingly ever present heavy set girl at the register doesn't even greet you or say hi... like ever. It leave such a bad taste in my mouth, i dont go out of my way to visit like i used to once a week. Service has dropped everywhere since the pandemic but this is so drastic since they were known for their friendliness. Food is still good but all portions have gotten smaller and they no longer serve the pickles on the side that were so delicious. The staff is lack luster and seems lazy if im being totally honest. I feel cringey if i have to ask for something more or that they forgot. I used to be in the restaurant business so im very aware that customers respond to consistency and friendliness. You're going to go home happy. It's their mission to make sure this happens. I've had the good fortune to visit City Barbecue twice. Both visits were absolutely excellent. Staff here genuinely wants to make sure you're happy. On my first visit, the manager was especially kind to my tired party. She personally saw to it that we were taken care of right, even as it was late, even as the place was getting ready to close for the day. First, let me get past the name. "City Barbecue" just seemed wrong to me. I have this weird idea that barbecue cannot be urban, must be done in the spirit of all good things rural, and may even involve hiding out in the woods, enjoying some spectacular blues music, (and maybe even some moonshine) while you stir a giant pot of Brunswick Stew with a broomstick. Clearly I am wrong. These folks make some excellent food. The first time I went, I had the Brisket Sandwich with some Hush Puppies and some Gumbo. Everything on that plate was excellent. The meat was cooked just right. Tender, smoky, and you've got a selection of quite a few sauces to please your palate. (If you're into that kind of thing.) They've got hot, sweet, vinegary, original, and a few other things, to boot. But let me underline the excellence of those hush puppies. Lightly crisp and crunchy on the outside, dense and hearty on the inside. Made with some sweet onions, these things are an absolute winner. I would go back JUST for the hush puppies. They are that good. The gumbo is more of a stew. It was thick and hearty. I get the idea it's something of a seasonal/temporary item. It is worth checking out if you're as appreciative of gumbo as I am. The second time I visited, I had a two item combo with ribs, beef brisket, some green beans, and more of those crowd-pleasing hush-puppies. Let me tell you, the amount of food on that plate might feed three people. (It would easily feed two people.) Delicious brisket. And the ribs were really quite good, too. One of the best qualities about this place is the food was ready quick. I got the pulled chicken sandwich, fries and Mac and cheese. Everything was ok, nothing was spectacular but nothing was disgusting. The sandwich lacked flavor and the Mac and cheese needed salt. Today , Feb 1 2024, I ordered two sandwiches - sliced beef brisket and pulled pork to go. The sliced beef was pretty good. The pulled pork was mostly big clumps of fat. They need to establish some standards on the quality of the sandwiches and initiate some quality checks. I was so disappointed and was going to return the pork sandwich but got home and didn't want to waste my time. Advice : stay away from the pulled pork at this place, a waste of money. I'm so happy I was mistaking! This place is fire! Hopefully, I will be back again! My guest and I shared the city sampler with baked beans and mac and cheese which feeds 2 people. I came to City Barbeque on a solo venture. It was the 4th of July so it was packed with patrons. The line was long but to my surprise it moved quite swiftly. I ordered the Turkey Breast with Baked Beans and Potato Salad. The Turkey was moist but had no seasoning on it. Luckily this barbecue joint is equipped with a variety of barbecue sauces to add a kick of sweet, savory, or heat to your meat. The baked beans were standard, not too bland & not too sweet. The potato salad could use a little hint more is sweet relish or sugar. In from the South & that's how we like it!lol Overall, the BBQ joint hits the spot. Have to be honest...All the high reviews have to be from 'Yankees'. This place is nothing special, it reeks of a place owned by a rich white guy from Rhode Island or something. First, they nickel and dime you on everything, the prices are very high, and the food is nothing special. I will end up going on and on how mediocre the food is, and how high the prices are...End of story, I wouldn't waste a second thought with this place. Giving two stars because the food wasn't so bad that I had to spit or puke it out, but would never bother with this place again. BBQ sauce is basically Kraft $.99 special at Kroger that week. Horrible, and believe me the meat isn't good enough to not want to put sauce on it. All that said...The one of four sides I ordered that I actually received, was terrible. Took one bite then threw in the trash. Sorry I had to change this to a one-star. For the price, it is absolute garbage. The cole slaw, Kroger cole slaw tastes better...Crap crap and crap! Unless you're some Yankee ready to fall face first into a tourist trap, I wouldn't ever eat at this place. Tonight we tried the several of the new menu items. The new Cobb salad was delicious and I would have it again! The queso was well seasoned and probably some of the best queso I have had in a while. Decent food, mediocre service, messy and unkempt interior as well as patio. During my first visit a while ago, we were not greeted upon arrival and were treated as more of a burden than anything. We were rushed to order our food it seems like all of the employees were having a bad day. Like I said, it was my first visit and I had assumed they bring the food to you. They do not. We sat outside (it wasn't busy at all, we just wanted some fresh). We waited 20 minutes outside, until I realized that it was a possibility that I'd have to take me own food from the counter. Of course by the time I got my food it was lukewarm. The sauce bottles were covered in sauce and sticky. On the patio and inside, there were napkins, crumbs, and grease everywhere you could imagine. On the bright side, I did enjoy my brisket sandwich. The meat was tender, and crispy on the outside. Pretty standard chain BBQ. 5 ribs in a half rack, more bone than meat and they cost close to $20. Half of mine were burned on top. The beans taste like they were poured out of a can and re-heated.
