This place is really resting on the reliable stream of Clayton office drones it attracts, because evidently it does not give even the tiniest effort to provide decent food and service. I went with my wife, who hails from out-of-town, only because we were on our way to the airport and needed a fast and easy meal. I'm now embarrassed that she thinks this place is indicative of St. Louis dining. The interior is worn down and ragged. Our booth sagged when we sat in it and jolted uncomfortably whenever the people in the adjacent booth shifted. Our server could not be bothered to muster the slightest bit of pleasantness. She curtly barked at us for our orders and overtly sighed and basically rolled her eyes when we requested withholding an ingredient from one of the dishes. We ordered nachos for the starter. What arrived was a massive platter of chips with a tiny handful of shredded cheese sparsely sprinkled on top, dotted by a few sad beans. 80% of the chips were just bare chips with no toppings. I almost thought it was a joke at first (like, even a drunk college student would turn away this insulting tragedy masquerading as nachos) and considered sending it back, but figured what's the point. My wife's cobb salad was a heap of wilted lettuce with mushy, mealy tomatoes, some deep-fried bacon, and not a hard-boiled egg to be seen. I ordered the sausage and andouille gumbo, knowing it wouldn't be authentic but figuring even a not-great gumbo is pretty tasty. What I got was a bowl of watered-down vegetable soup. Everything that makes a gumbo an actual "gumbo," e.g., the sauted holy trinity, the flavorful roux, etc., was missing. Don't get me wrong. I know this place is catering to the lowest-common-denominator, but my wife and I agreed it was literally the saddest, most disappointing and apathetic bar food we've ever had. They get two stars because the Zwickel draft I had was delicious and distracted from the rest of the meal. I hadn't been to this CJ Muggs in years. I had an early dinner there with two others on a Sunday evening. I decided to order the Seafood Gumbo. My dinner dates ordered a salad and a Reuben Sandwich with French Fries. I really liked my Seafood Gumbo. It had just a bit of heat and was well cooked. They added just a bit of rice. The Reuben was kind of greasy but I guess that happens when you melt cheese and put a little bit of fat on bread? The service was not good. The place could use a little attention. The first chair I sat on was broken and I had to switch. Overall I'm sure weekday lunch and right after work is when they do their business and they don't have the A-team there on a Sunday evening for dinner. I'd go back but I'm not in a rush! read more

I wish I could give them zero stars. This review is a message for all UberEats drivers and anyone who decides to order from this place for delivery. This restaurant only cares about their profit and not the customer satisfaction. I had a late night with work and decide I would order from them as I just wanted a sandwich, soup, brownie, and a drink. I ordered through UberEats as I had done before and never had an issue. The first issue was not even with them as the order was supposed to be here by 8:40pm but did not actually get here until 9. It was not that big of a deal as I understand it is busy since it is Valentine's day. I received the order and quickly noted that my drink was missing. My food was in two bags that seemed heavy for the food I ordered so I opened the food and noticed none of it was what I wanted. I received a salad, chips, seafood pasta (which I cannot eat), rolls, and a bowl of chili. My first thought was that the UberEats driver mistakenly delivered me someone else's order, but upon further inspection, I noted the receipt that was attached to BOTH bags had my name and original order. The bags were tightly sealed when I got them and the food was tightly wrapped and not tampered with. The restaurant put my receipt with the wrong order, to which the driver delivered! I called the restaurant after my attempt to reach the driver failed and explained my situation to one of the servers. He quickly put me on hold so I could talk to the manager. After a few minutes, the manager answered and I repeated the situation to her. She was very dismissive and immediately claimed it was the driver's fault, even after I noted the receipt being stapled to the bags. I asked her if there could be any accommodations as I absolutely cannot eat the seafood pasta (due to allergies) and her exact words were "the owner still wants to be paid so you can reorder your food if you want". I was taken aback and said I would bring the food to the restaurant to prove I have the wrong order but she said either way, I would not receive a refund from them. I eventually did receive a refund from UberEats but they said they would be investigating the driver even after I said it was 100% the restaurant's fault as there was no way they would have known. This restaurant does not take accountable nor care about the customers that order through UberEats as their motto is "they will still receive money regardless", which is why I vow to never order from them again and furthermore, I want to warn as many people as I can. If I had been in the restaurant dining and received the wrong order, I'm sure they would not have treated me this way. read more

I applaud the management for adhering to the current restrictions and still providing excellent service and tasty food! Started with the gumbo on this chilly Friday night and kept it going with the shrimp and grits. Both were flavorful, beautifully presented and delish! Went here for dinner on a snowy Sunday afternoon. I never got my waitress's name, but she was decent. My drink order was wrong the second time around, but it was a good drink so I'll let it slide! We started with spinach and artichoke dip with pita wedges and tortilla chips. It was tasty and creamy, kind of hard to mess up this go-to appetizer. Next I ordered the salmon with tomato risotto as my entree. It was cooked perfectly! I love a good piece of salmon and this dish didn't disappoint. I came to CJ Muggs because I was on jury duty and it was the closest place to have a nice lunch. I would say with all the money I made being a jurist for one day would not pay for this lunch. In fact the money paid would not cover McDonalds. I am sorry I digressed. I came alone as I was the lonely jurist. Oops digressed. I was seated upon arrival at the establishment. I could have eaten at the bar but a table with a TV just above me was a great choice. My server introduced herself and promptly served me my drink. I ordered the muffuletta ( olive salad, including oil. Layer with salami, ham, mortadella, mozzarella and Provolone). It was served with French fries which I did not eat as the sandwich is huge. I have had muffuletta in different places and I am going to say this was the best muffuletta I have ever eaten. It was like every bite you were sad because there was less of the sandwich and you knew the end was going to come. Dang that sandwich was wonderful. I was shocked today to learn that CJ Muggs is a local business and not a chain. I knew we had two in the Saint Louis area, so for some reason I just assumed it was a chain. I have never been so glad in my life to be wrong. It is similar to a TGIF or Houlihan's with hometown ownership. After dropping more $'s then I normally do for tennis shoes, I wanted to save some $'s on lunch so I flipped through the Entertainment Coupon Book and found one for CJ Muggs. It was a BOGO which would give us a savings of $8. We were strong and skipped having an appetizer. I stuck to being good on my diet, and enjoyed the Smoked Salmon Spinach and Field Greens Salad. Spinach, mixed greens, crumbled blue cheese, toasted walnuts, roasted red and yellow peppers, al dente green beans topped with a nice size piece of smoked salmon and tossed in their strawberry vinaigrette. It was a nice mix, but they were heavy handed on the dressing. I would also recommend breaking the salmon up to make it easier to enjoy. The SO enjoyed a small house salad with blue cheese dressing, which was just a typical small dinner salad. Then he enjoyed a half size of Muffalato with their house french fries. They did a great job on the Muffalato. It may not be Blues City Deli, but when in Clayton it will do. Their fries were made in house, I love it when fries have the outer potato skin on and are fried crispy. Service was good, our waitress was friendly and chatty making our first visit enjoyable. I think on our next visit we'll check out their location in Webster Grove and see which one is the best of the two. After all, I have more BOGO coupons. read more

This girl knew it and then the menu which had over 100 options she knew every ingredient to every Menu option there was I could not complain. I have mixed feelings on this place. The first time I ordered there I was blown out the water. The burger was cooked to perfection, the fries had the right amount of crunch and salt to them. I even recommended it to my husband. The second time it was below average, I felt a fool because the burgers were grilled to perfection on the outside but the inside was absolutely uncooked and raw and the fries were soggy. It wasn't good and I filed a formal complaint immediately, granted while I was the patient customer and took into consideration that understaffing and popular demand were great factors in this. The staff adhered to my complaint and my husband and I visited inside and it was back to perfect again, juicy, thick burgers grilled and served phenomenally, even had a salad and our bartender made excellent mojitos! Now, cue to tonight. I ordered my usual, an American Burger with fries. Alright. Cooked temperature was supposed to be medium. Delivery driver brought my meal much earlier than anticipated which is always a plus, however one bite into that sandwich and BAM it was raw and undercooked again. Granted the medium burger is supposed to be pink and the sandwich was charred beautifully on the outside but I did not ask for my cow to moo or bleed... I ate it because I'm that type of person, if I pay for it. I will eat it. However, this will be the last time I will eat here or recommend this place. Sat outside in a beautiful night and wanted to grab a quick bite. We ordered the Greek salad, and two burgers and fries. The Greek salad looked and tasted delicious but there was a dead fly in the side of salad dressing. One burger came without the cheese that was ordered, and the other burger was ordered to be medium and was cooked way beyond well done. The staff removed the salad from the table and the bill, but we never received an apology. The service was extremely poor. We have it two stars because the salad (pre-fly) was tasty and the fries were spectacular thin fries. The burgers, service and experience were all disappointing. We won't be back. read more

Very few steps and I was enjoying an Urban Chestnut Zwickel. I'd call it woody, warm and 90's Divey place. Location has helped this business. Ended up having two Zwickels and a "Screeeeetch" Bud light on draft. Sipping "gulping" it now as I write these words. Ordered the chicken wings, wife, the shrimp and grits. Two musts for me on wings. Buy them right, cook them right. Foundational for wings. Start out with inferior product, your dead in the water. Poor technique, no sauce can can redeem. These came out. Healthy size and look, cooked perfectly. A double win. Sauce was adequate, so the produce was a hit. Shrimp and grits were very passable and even flavorful. Use of locally brewed beers? Check! This is a great place to enjoy food and the atmosphere. BTW we used the party food. First ever visit. It was on a Sunday between hours 1:00-5:00pm. It was good time to go. There was good parking. I noticed that as the evening hours approached there was less of a crowd. BTW they have plenty of outside seating with canopy covering. Beautiful and nice. Staff worker worked so hard and fast to take our orders to get our food out in a timely manner. It was only one person working the party room. My Food was delicious, seasoned well and hot.
