Not what we were expected at all. Staying in St. Louis for a long weekend. We were looking to grab a bite to eat and nothing was open on a Monday night in this quiet part of town. Hesitated to go into CJ Mugs because we were not looking for bar food. Since nothing else was open, we gave it a try... My girlfriend and I order the goat cheese appetizer and a Greek salad with chicken. Both items were delicious and service was great. I believe Lexi was our servers name. She suggested dessert and she said everything was homemade. We settled on the snickers pie, it was awesome. We chose to eat here for Clayton's restaurant week and it was definitely a great choice. Our server, Kendall was remarkable. Each course came out in a timely manner and was plated really nice. For my first course I chose the shrimp and grits. The portion was good and packed w flavor. For my second course I had the pork ribbed chops and it was simply amazing. The park chops were topped w a marmalade sauce w sautéed onions on top, over a bed of mashed potatoes and paired w mixed vegetables. For my third course I chose the New Orleans bread pudding. The bourbon sauce along w the pecans and chantilly cream made this all come together for me...and all of this for 25$. I left w a doggie bag! CJ Muggs is a pretty good bar and grill located in downtown Clayton. There's a lot of TVs showing sports and a full bar. The menu carries a wide variety including standard bar fare, burgers, sandwiches, and specialty entrees. I've been here twice. The first time was a long time ago and I remember I had a burger that wasn't bad. The other night I came with a large work group and I had the shrimp and grits. It wasn't bad but I've had better, granted, CJ Muggs is not a Cajun restaurant so it was a worthy attempt. Our group was able to reserve a large party room which was secluded from the rest of the restaurant, which was nice. If you're in the downtown Clayton area, you should consider CJ Muggs for your next casual outing. read more

swung in here on a whim ---out shopping on a Saturday and drove by---it was an awesome find....the bar was pretty dead and my bartender Sarah did a fabulous job with my cosmo that I ordered....I can be a real bitch about my martini drink and she did not disappoint me in the least.....perfect blend and nice and cold..... My hubby and I decided to try an appetizer and split a pizza---again another awesome choice....we got the hummus plate and it was really good...nice warm foccacia bread triangles with house made hummus and some feta we got the sausage and pepper pizza and it was also delicious..... will def---go back here for more food and the atmosphere was nice warm wood accents around and some nice ceiling fans....good bar.... read more

Visited for Dinner on January 7. Don't go! Waited 2 hours for food, got a cob salad with avocado, that was black and mushy. The server tried to tell me that is was because they are out of season! You can get fresh avocado's in most grocery stores! The chicken on top tasted like it was good the day before. This is not the first visit that had a 2 hour wait, but it was the last! Yikes. The bartender tonight Destiny I believe is her name was wearing the most unprofessional outfit I've ever seen a bartender in Clayton wear. Completely short shorts that outlined her goodies they were so up her butt. In addition to that she was slow to make our drinks and USED HER DIRTY HANDS to grab fruit for other drinks. We know they were dirty because she had just taken out dirty plates and then made drinks for someone else and used her DIRTY hands. Didn't sanitize or wash or use tongs to grab the fruit GROSS and unsafe as hell. Thank god we just got beers. I will not be going back when she's bartending. I love Muggs the food is great and service usually matches BUT she makes this place look terrible. Never have I ever been more disgusted in a bartender in Clayton. Stay away from the rude, short haired, terribly dressed bartender. YIKES. read more

I went here for Clayton's Restaurant Week & I'm not so sure why they participated. Every thing was so BASIC. From the shrimp & grits (very unseasoned, by the way) to the Cajun pasta. If you work in this area, it's basically a convenience. CJ Muggs has a large menu but lacks quality food. I ordered Salmon and it smelled horrible, it was replaced with another that was just as bad. This was not my first time experiencing bad food from Muggs but gave them chances because of the convenience. The homemade chips are pretty good. Good luck. read more

I usually don't like to rate a restaurant poorly when I've only experienced it once but when the total experience is so horrid that I fear a return visit, I have to spill my guts... sort of like just after my first visit to C.J. Muggs. Firstly, with a huge clientele of lawyers in Clayton, I would think they might keep it all on the up and up to prevent multiple lawsuits. In fact, I was treated to lunch by my lawyer and I could see by his face he was as disappointed as I was. For an attorney to drop his poker face, you know something has to be wrong. Aside from the waitress coming back several times to ask us what we ordered, not reappearing enough to refill our drinks and failing to bring the condiments we asked for on at least two occasions, the service was horrid. The odd thing was that it was well after the lunch rush, so there was little excuse for troubled service. Not that I'm a snob, but the rest of the staff was taking a break, filling condiment bottles and chatting loudly just two tables away. According to the endless Bar and restaurant stakeout/rescue shows I've watched, that is one of the things they immediately stop in every place. On to the food, if one lowers their standards of the category of what passes for edible food, this didn't make it. I know that a place which caters to lawyers is probably use to their clientele just unhinging their jaws to swallow large rodents whole, but I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and was really having problems with it. Had our waitress returned, I would have sent it back but I was starving and we had to get back to my attorney's office. The chicken, which is fried, was burned, hard and crunchy, rather than crisp . The buffalo sauce should have moistened the crunch but I guess they were low on sauce or just stingy. The bun was dry and tasted a bit of being a day over the stale mark. As any good cook would know, you take a bun of that size, spread butter or a touch of oil on the underside and toast is lightly so the bun is warm and slightly moist on the sandwich side. As for the chicken, the cook should have looked at what came out of the fryer and thrown it away. Instead he or she decided it was good enough to serve and now you can live with this review... or die with it. Frankly, I don't care! read more

CJ Muggs is pretty underwhelming in terms of food but has tons of space, a large bar, and a decent tap selection. Their food menu is pretty expansive but hat lacks quality. They have everything from pizzas to quesadillas and steaks. However, none of really caught me in terms of flavor. I went there today for a birthday dinner and tired one of their pizzas as well as bites of their steak salad. It was all pretty "meh." I would never crave it or find it particularly satisfying but food is food! Out of the 8 of us, none of us found are meals particularly tasty. It seems like CJ's might be a better stop for a happy hour. They have tons of booze and a big space to hang out. Plus, the food isn't as important when you're just looking for some small bites. Went on a Saturday afternoon that was gloomy. This place cheered me up quick! Really great pub atmosphere, exposed brick, lot's of space and TVs for watching sports. Beer menu was a bit limited with craft selections but oh my burger! A mix of chuck and beef rib, thick and juicy and grilled to perfection! The spinach dip was fabulous and the pita bread was cooked to just the right temp. I look forward to my next visit there, trying some other food and watching some games!! read more

I stopped in for some eats before a big court case. I ordered the muffaletta sandwich and fresh chips. The sandwich was tasty, and portions were hefty. They forgot to bring my chips and instead brought their signature slaw...which I did not care for. I asked about the chips again and they still forgot. I had to eat fast since I was on a time restraint, but I never did see my chips. I have to say...that was kinda crappy. Maybe I will give them another shot, but probably not. Sad to say. read more

My wife and I were just driving around the Brentwood area and somehow ended up at CJ Muggs. She wanted something vegetarian. I just wanted food. We were seated promptly and sat outside on the patio. Service was fast and prices were average. They break down many of their food options between small and large portions. We both got small orders of the Vegetarian Pad Thai and the Tequila Chicken Pasta. They brought out bread with some type of cheese whiz butter. The food was excellent. We stopped in for a late dinner on a Monday night around 9 and it was dead. Despite that, dinner was pretty good! They have a gigantic menu. It took me quite a few minutes to decide what to choose. I had the 5 cheese pizza which was alright. The tomatoes on top were just huge slices, which I was not a fan of. My date had the fajita chicken salad and it was HUGE!! It came in a tortilla bowl and looked awesome! It looks like they have pretty good happy hour specials too and I bet it is more crowded during the happy hour rush! Another one of those great Clayton bar and grill places that just starts swarming with lawyers in black suits come 5 o'clock. That said, I really enjoy this place. The food is actually quite good and the menu choices are vast. I usually opt for the pizza which is delicious. The wild mushroom pizza is amazing if you are a mushroom fan. In my carnivorous days I used went for the bacon, carmelized onion and goat cheese, since I could never pass up a piece of a bacon and I have to say, I am still tempted to order it when I go to CJ Muggs. They load the pizzas up and the crust is crispy and not too thick. (Chicago Style fans be wary, not your type of pie). Also, this Clayton crowd doesn't get quite as "meat markety" as most of the bars in Clayton tend to get later in the night. It's a great place to grab dinner and drinks with your friends if you aren't looking to get hit on the entire night. The service is really great as well. You will never have to ask your waitress a dozen times for a refill on your water and the staff altogether is incredibly nice. They do catering too and the prices are pretty reasonable for the huge selction and the quality of food you get for the price. Their Sunday brunch is great as well and doesn't get quite as packed with the"church crowd" as First Watch down the street. Certainly worth checking out if you are hungry in Clayton, or if you are just looking for a nice place to grab a drink. read more

It pains me to write a bad review for a restaurant, but in this case I'm willing to make an exception. I was at a seminar at the Sheraton Clayton and on October 21st a large group came in for lunch. After we arrived two other large groups came in, our group of 12 people waited over 50 minutes, the other two groups had already received their food, in fact one of the groups had finished their food before we even received ours. They were more concerned with getting the checks paid than serving the food in a timely manner. Sadly, the young server took the brunt of the frustration, the Manager finally came over, coped an attitude and did nothing to alleviate the situation or do anything to make it right. This was the kiss of death as far as I am concerned. The food finally showed up after waiting almost an hour, we had to put them all in to go boxes, and I got to eat a cold Portobello sandwich with cold soggy fries. A total wast of my time and money. There were several things Mgt could have done to fix the problem yet they chose to do nothing. I don't live in St. Louis so I will never eat here again, but as a service oriented business I give them a big fat 0. Go someplace else. read more

On my first visit to STL on the excursion to get me to move there, my hubby and I spent money on two meals here, b/c it was so close to our hotel. Walking distance, about a block and since the weather was so scorchingly hot, not worth venturing too far out. On top of that, NFL football had just started and since we are big fans, we needed to find a spot to watch the Colts game. We sat at the bar at CJ Muggs and had really good service. We got a mixture of appetizers from buffalo wings to quesedillas and spinach dip (a personal favorite). I thought it was well worth the price, which was moderate, the staff was generally good, decent bar food and probably a popular place for lunch for the Claytonites who work in the area. If I were in Clayton and the Colts were on again, i would definitely hit it up for a quick, predictable bite. read more

C.J. Mugg's is a nice little restaurant that has quite a lot to offer. This is the kind of place where you can go and get a nice pizza, pasta, salad, or a hearty hamburger. When I went I opted for the hamburger when I went. It was a nice turkey burger with pepperjack cheese and I had a nice side of coleslaw. The burger was nice and juicy and cooked just how I like it. The service was wonderful and I enjoyed myself the entire time that that I was there. read more

CJ Muggs has a great happy hour with free wings and some other yummy nosh foods. However for dinner its normally pretty quiet and the food is OK! I had the greek salad the other night and it was definitely a good sized salad, but nothing special. I have also had the fajita salad there and it's again nothing special. I definitely recommend Muggs for anything that has to do with Happy Hour!!! And it is great for groups. Bar food + drinks always = a good time. read more

Four of us ate lunch at CJ Muggs on July 26, 2012 at about 1pm. Quickly seated and order for drinks taken quickly. Follow-up for ordering meal was fast also. Food arrived promptly, so no service issues. One ordered the tuna melt, which includes bacon, with chips, one had the grilled portabella panini with chips, the third had the smoked turkey panini with chips, and I had the Ruben with coleslaw. Everyone like the chips. The tuna melt was a hit because of the bacon. The portabella and turkey paninis were enjoyed. But I was disappointed in the Ruben. Just drier than anticipated, probably because it didn't have the traditional thousand island dressings. It is served with horseradish sauce instead, but so little of it that I couldn't tell there was any horseradish. Overall ok, but nothing special, except the bacon on a tuna melt. I'm pretty sure I'm giving myself an ulcer. The panic attack I have every time I have to order off a menu can't be good for me. The menu at CJ Muggs is diverse enough that I am not sure what kind of food it is they do best and order appropriately. We have been coming here annually for the past few years around this time of year after the CSP swim meet is over on Sunday night. You would think I had a grasp on this menu by now, not close. With every thing I have to determine if I could make it or just how difficult it would be to make. Then if the price seems appropriate for the difficulty and the ingredients. I really have no way of knowing, for some reason I think I should. Well all that worrying and then I try to be healthy. I went with a spinach, smoked salmon salad that had walnuts, gorgonzola, red onion, roasted bell peppers, green beans, and a strawberry dressing. It was delicious. I don't know if the difficulty factor was there, but the salmon was perfect. My mom had the tuscan chicken which had some really good mashed potatoes and vegetables with it. Andy had the mahi mahi which he seemed to enjoy and Doug had the chicken risotto which he claims was good but not re-orderable. Doc had the linguine tutto mare, which he said was very good, however they forgot to crack open one of the mussels for him. The waitress was very accommodating as was the hostess who didn't seem to upset after pushing some tables together for us even though Doc was already waiting at a table. Oops. She kept the water glasses full and the requests for more bread. Taking order by memory for 6 then making stops around to other tables on the way to put it in, is a skill I could never acquire. The main reason CJ Muggs gets 3 stars is because they're open late and we usually have the same waiter and he's great (hi, Carl!). I tried half the things on the menu before I finally found something I like, and that wound up being the pizza. I've tried several--wild mushroom, sausage & caramelized onion, pepperoni & mushroom, 4-cheese--and they were all great. Actually, so are just about all the appetizers we've tried. My favorite is the hummus plate, which comes with flatbread wedges, feta and some olives. BF is partial to the chicken strips and chicken quesadilla. The complimentary bread was nice and warm and fresh, but it was tasteless. My buffalo chicken sandwich was great, lots of juicy chicken, and good bun for this type of sandwich. Onions were a great addition to this sandwich. My house salad was perfect because it wasn't boring like most places' house salads. This place had red onions, croutons, cheese, tomatoes, and an egg. Good call, Muggs! My husbands large order of Shrimp and Grits was huge, and looked decent. However, he did say the shrimps could have been texturized more, higher heat to cook maybe, a little char or blackening seasoning too. He seemed to think the grits were ok but needed some seasonings too. Friendly and attentive staff. We ate here super late on a week night. This place makes me sad. My husband and I lived in Clayton a few years ago and this was our go-to. The food was always consistent, the beer selection was good, and we had a waiter and bartender that we really liked. Anyone who worked there seemed to have been working there for years. Well, we just moved back and CJ Muggs is now just.... meh. It seems like the entire wait staff has changed which makes me think that the kitchen staff changed, too. The food is pretty bland and never seems to be cooked right (or at least the way it used to be). We've gone back a few times hoping that the previous time was just an off day, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I don't think we'll be going back anytime soon. read more
