Both the wife and I were impressed. dose not happen often for oreintal food. We went for a late lunch so it was almost emty, and the sevice was excellent, the establishment was clean, the lighting was subdued but good enough to read the menues. The spring rolls were crisp and not oiley, we also had the calamari for an appatizer 9 out of 10. The wife had the shrimp chow fun with the extra sauce on the side, the serving came with enough for her, 8.5/10. Absolutely wonderful staff, fantastic food, and they serve Chinese and Japanese in one place! My now ex (but was then my significant other) and I used to come to this place regularly. So often in fact, one of the staff, Eric, became our usual waiter, and whenever he saw us walk in, he'd have our order in to the kitchen before we even sat down. The rest of the staff is just as phenomenal. Always incredibly friendly and checks in regularly to see how we're doing or if we need anything. The food is always outstandingly good. I would always get the Szechuan broccoli and a plate of the Veggie tempera rolls, and I've never had a bad experience. I believe we had been going around once a month for about a year and a half or so, potentially even two. Definitely plan on going again soon with family or friends! I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I've been coming here for years and the food and the service is always outstanding. I like it here because you have a choice of AYCE sushi or chinese food or bento boxes. If the people you're with can't make up their mind this is the place to go. I'm a fan with the nigiri sushi and the rolls aren't so huge, so you can try different rolls and not get full on just one roll. Rice to fish ratio is great. I like the fact that the rolls aren't overly sauced and you can ask to have any of the sauces you like on the side if you wanted to. As for the Chinese side of the restaurant, the food is great and consistent when I order stuff. I recommend the sizzling rice soup! The taste is spot on. Chow mein is great as the noodles are cooked al dente and the flavor is the bomb! Try dishes that aren't the traditional American chinese dishes. If you ask the server about those dishes, they will guide you in the right direction. read more

Now that I'm back in California. Whenever I go to Nevada, CJ Palace is my go to place in Reno/Sparks area for sushi.

Honestly I'm very picky when it comes to Chinese food, but CJ Palace didn't fail to disappoint. Service is great, very attentive and fast. We were immediately sat down, our drink orders taken and out within less than a minute. Appetizers were fresh and flavorful; especially the wonton soup! Love that hint of ginger. I was shocked when our food came out as we didn't have to wait 20-30 mins. It literally came out 10 mins after ordering- barely had to even wait! The food was great! It definitely hit the spot and was delicious! Highly recommend and will be back. read more

Had lunch here with a lovely group of friends on Mother's Day. I had the Mu Shu Vegetables. It is shredded vegetables served with tortilla shell like "pancakes" and a hoisin sauce. The vegetables were awesome! They had great flavor even without the hoisin sauce. Of course the serving was huge and half of it came home with me. Which, of note, warmed up just as tasty and make a great lunch with rice the next day. My only issue with the lunch was that our food did not all come out at the same time. It arrived at the table as it was ready I guess so some of had to just watch other people eat until our food arrived. 3/1/10 UPDATE Our last visit to CJ's this weekend really has changed my outlook on this place. The service was appalling. When we first walked in the two girls at the front were chit chatting and really weren't willing to stop in order to seat us. After waiting for them to get done, we were seated and ignored for quite a bit. Once we finally received our food we continued to be ignored, wouldn't even look over at us!! I went half the meal without a soda (which I pay over $2 for!). Overall, I was extremely disappointed. Perhaps it's just best to get the food to go and not deal with the possible horrid service. 1/4/10 My boyfriend and I visit about three times a month. The food is great! So far I have like everything I ordered. My favorite is the general chicken. The dressing on the salad is also excellent. I have only ordered Chinese food so I can't comment on the sushi. The service can be hit or miss, most of the time the service is good. This is definitely my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Reno/Sparks area. read more

I only come here for the Chinese food and not the sushi so my rating is solely based upon that. I think they use better white meat chicken here than other Chinese food places I've been to which is a big PLUS. I've had the crispy chicken, crispy beef, fried rice, chow mein and I've liked them all. Kelly is always nice and courteous even when the place is packed and things get frantic, she makes time to stop by and ask how it's going and if everything is ok. This use to be my go to place, don't know what happened. Second time having an issue with my order. We ordered egg foo young, house fried noodles and steamed rice. First, after a long time, came fried rice, which I didn't order. The server put it on the table and walked away. I asked 2 other people why I got this, no answer. After a long time the server came back with the egg foo young and steamed rice. We said we didn't order fried rice, just steamed rice. After a while and checking what was written, she took it away. The egg foo young was this thick patty and was warm on the top and cool on the bottom but the sauce was hot. We decided to eat it because it took so long to get the order. It was not that good. We finished the egg foo young and the house fried noodles showed up. They were nice and hot and tasted great and a very large serving. I just wanted to have all of my food at the same time. For me, spending an hour and a half for two items and the problems with the order made our dining experience a poor one. read more

I've been here a couple of times, mainly due to family members describing it as their favorite sushi joint in town. I found the long rolls to be bland in flavor, boring in ingredients and not fresh enough. Moreover, the service was unacceptable. In a party of 14, why oh why would you serve a toddler LAST? Pretty good Chinese food and the lunch prices are AWESOME! I've only been the once during lunch but it is a lot of food and you can get out of there for less than $10 easily. I went with a party of three and our bill was only about $28 and that was with hot tea. read more

This is the first sushi ive ever had in Reno and thought this was the standard. After sampling more places i see that their sushi is very boring. No craft. First time here, a Friday night about 7:45. We were seated quickly in a great spot, party of 4. Business gradually slowed while we were there, as in people were finishing up and leaving, and not so many coming in afterwards. Over half of the AYCE bar emptied out after about 20 minutes. Our drunks and apps came quickly. Apps were ok Combo plate and Mussels. Ordered dinner 2 meals, & all u can eat sushi. Dinner plates-chinese food plate and single roll plate came quickly....no all u can eat yet. 5-10 min later, miso soup and cuc salad after we asked...still no sushi. Next the other meals are halfway eaten....still no AYCE. Now we find out after asking again, the order was lost or not submitted. We wait another 10 min, while receiving apologies from the server and manager. The really sad part is after all that, and we were politely patient, the Sushi was not great, taste and cost combined was not worth returning even if the service had gone as one would expect. Turns out our server was in training, and that was what got the blame for the serious delay. However, they should have had a better eye on him, and the manager freely discounted the bill (not by enough I think, but I did not complain.) The Chinese food was good, however they said there was no fried rice. I don't know if that means they were out or just don't have it on the menu. read more

That being said, I requested a to-go order of the War Won ton soup, which I have done several times, and more than half way through the serving I found a BUG!!! Chinese food may be ok but what I'm really reviewing is the sushi. Sushi was awful. Cheap gas station tasting sushi. Center filled with rice and tempura shrimp in every roll with an abundance of sweet sauces on top to mask the sliver of fish that is on top. Even then you can taste the age of the fish you are eating. Just awful. If they sell this crap it should at least be a discount sushi place. Instead they feel they are good enough to compete with the main sushi players in the city and charge as such, $19 for lunch. Do not go here for sushi. Ever. read more

I've been to CJ Palace many, many times and love this place. The Chinese food is always consistently great - it's my favorite Chinese food in the area. I love the spicy eggplant, chow fun, bean curd and many other vegetable dishes. They always add tofu for me when I ask and don't charge extra for it. The service is always friendly and I've never had to wait very long to be seated even when they are busy. Sometimes service is slower when they are extremely busy, but overall it's still good and they always apologize if there is a backlog of orders in the kitchen. The sushi is often really good, but sometimes it's not great. It seems to depend on who is making it. During peak lunch and dinner hours it's great. But a couple of times when I've gone to an early dinner I seem to get sushi that's just not that well-made. Sometimes it falls apart and it's just not wrapped very well. It's still good, but it's just super sloppy. So, I'd say definitely go for the Chinese at any time of the day, but only sushi during peak hours... read more

To say that is like saying they beat out places like Hiroba is just crazy...There are many places in town with way better sushi than what you're getting here. The sushi was mediocre..nothing better than what I could get at Smiths. My boyfriend had the Chinese which was pretty decent. I've been here a couple of times before over the past few months and seems to be fairly consistent in both service and taste. Nice location although the surrounding businesses seem to be dying off with greater regularity which is very unfortunate. We didn't have to wait this time and the service was good and prompt. The selection was quite large where you can decide between traditional Chinese entrees or Japanese sushi. Having had Chinese the last time (which was pretty good in flavor...I love sauces and they did a good job of that) I opted to try the sushi this time. I went for the "all you can eat" option, getting a Crystal Shrimp Roll, Godzilla Roll and a Caterpillar Roll. All were good however there seemed to be more rice than meat or other toppings. Maybe it was just me or the chef that prepared them this time but I was expecting a little better ratio when I plunked one into my mouth. Don't get me wrong, they were good, just not great and could have used more flavor, outside of soy sauce and wasabi. They other orders were Chinese dishes and most were all enjoyed. I would certainly go back but would have to shop around for sushi first, or stick with the Chinese. read more
