I was pretty crestfallen when we drove all the way down to Garden Grove to find out Boiling Crab was closed! My awesome husband whipped out his phone and found Claws which was down the street on Brookhurst and we got there right when it opened. We ordered the #1 combo with 3lbs of shrimp with medium cannonball seasoning, sausages, a crabcake appetizer and a side of cajun fries. We can't help but compare it to Boiling Crab and when our order came it tasted exactly the same! The shrimp was way bigger which was a plus and 3lbs was more than enough. I also like how they give out a huge stack of napkins (v.s. a roll of paper towel that has been touched by different hands - ew), a big bowl of lemon slices and no charge for condiments or water. This rating is for their fish entrees. I came here for dinner because some friends were craving Cajun seafood in a bag. I don't usually crave this particular fare so I opted for a fish entree. I ordered the blackened tilapia with veggies, no rice (~$14). The fish tasted pretty good but the price was steep for what I got. My boyfriend also got a fish entree - catfish, and it tasted exactly the same as the tilapia. I don't recommend this place for their fish dishes. You can get the same thing somewhere else (California Fish Grill) for cheaper and better quality. If you do want their specialty seafood in a bag, I do recommend coming here over Boiling Crab. At these types of restaurants, I normally get shrimp instead of crawfish, because crawfish looks like it takes more work for such a small piece of meat (like the tip of my pinky!). And crawfish is more expensive too! "you're paying for shell!" I say. But my friend ordered the crawfish at Claws... and those things were seriously on steroids. THE BEST CAJUN FOOD. This is my go-to spot whenever I'm craving crawfish. I used to never order when the crawfish was frozen at other locations because the meat wouldn't taste fresh, but their frozen crawfish are big, juicy, and flavorful. I can't even tell that it was previously frozen. I recommend always getting the cannonball flavor to get the most out of your seafood. I also can't believe their peeled shrimp is the same weight as the normal shrimp, so we usually opt for that. Both the crawfish and shrimp are usually pretty big, which is great and makes it worth all the peeling. I always get medium spice and the majority of my family gets mild. I feel like the medium is the perfect level of spice. Mild is too mellow for me, though after a while, the medium starts to burn... but it burns so good. Not only is their seafood super bomb, but I love their appetizers. I have enjoyed their perfectly crispy fried calamari, lemon pepper and Cajun fries, Cajun roasted corn and fried okra. I usually get a catfish basket when I come, which is also delicious. My only gripe is that it's one giant catfish, which causes the batter to break off in weird pieces when you break it apart or bite it. I would prefer to have smaller strips of catfish instead of the whole fish. I have also tried their fried frog legs and their clams which were also delicious. I haven't tried anything I haven't liked from here. I have had several dine-in as well as takeout experiences here. When I dined in, the servers were always good about checking in to ensure we had everything we needed. They were attentive and made sure our drinks were refilled, we had enough limes, and even offered gloves. I loved Boiling Crab when it had only a few locations. However, when it started expanding and got super popular, the quality went down and the sauce just got salty for me. I have tried many other Cajun seafood places but the sauce always had some weird flavor and I almost gave up on finding an alternative until I found Claws. read more

I ended up driving to this place to ask and they said they do have it, live fresh crawfish. So I bought 2 pounds of live fresh crawfish, mild, trio mix sauce and 2 pounds of live fresh crawfish, spicy, trio mix sauce. Hostess service was excellent by the way so bringing home the crawfish to eat. My girlfriend and I begin to eat and the first taste of the sauce was pretty good but crawfish ended up not being live fresh crawfish. I can tell from live to frozen cooked crawfish cause I've been eating crawfish my whole life from down south. There were some mushy ones and dead ones also that tasted horrible. The sausage is very meaty and not very Juicy, so if you like juicy sausage don't get the add on. The crawfish and shrimp were underwhelming. It felt dry and no flavor. I don't think the flavors seeped into the meat so it wasn't very good. I can usually finished 2-3 lbs on my own, but i couldn't finish the 3 lb combo with two other people because i was getting tired of the low taste. Cleanliness: very clean and it looks very nice bow after the remodel. Like the nice bar. Overall: still needs a lot of improvement in food quality. All the appetizers are spot on and delicious, Calamari was the best. the 3,4,5lb deals are really good deals and include choices of some appetizers. I believe we got the 3lb deal and added on a couple more lbs of shrimp. Besides the seafood we also got cajun wings, sweet potato fries, side salad, and Jack Daniel ribs. Ribs were alright, but wasn't expecting too much because its a seafood place. We got cannonball for two bags of seafood, the mild was a little bland, but the medium spice had the kick I needed. I wish I took a picture of my "live" crawfish so that it's 100% clear of what I tried to eat and enjoy. My crawfish was extremely rubbery, I had to actually use some strength to pull the meat apart. The servers were as polite as they could be, but I just thought it was interesting, because when I mentioned it to one of the servers and literally pulled the meat apart in front of her I asked her to check our tab to see if the other server who took our order had accidentally put in frozen crawfish instead of live and she confirmed with me that it says live crawfish, she had told me that the crawfish that was given to me was fresh but I can't even express enough how NOT fresh it was (like I said I eat live crawfish pretty frequently when it's in season) She did offer to let me try their frozen crawfish but I took a nibble and it was the same as what was given. I didn't fret or ask for our bill to be discounted, but I want to be honest about this place and hopefully this also helps their business address concerns so that their restaurant can thrive.
