This is a very popular breakfast place on Coronado Island, we had about a 10-15 minute wait to be seated. It's looks like a 1950s diner inside, big comfortable booths or you can sit at the bar which covers the middle of the restaurant. I had a huge waffle and oatmeal, that waffle was so good I forgot to take a picture of it. Consider Clayton's a must do if you are in Coronado. A great diner that has been here since 1942. The service and food quality are simply outstanding. One of the best breakfasts I have had. My order (biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs and home fries) came out so fast if I did not know better I would swear they knew I was coming and what I wanted to order! The coffee is also excellent and my cup was never empty. I also loved the atmosphere, horseshoe counter service (there are also tables) and great music playing. I absolutely adore Clayton's! They have my favorite coffee in town, the cinnamon honey latte! It's not overly sweet and they use the perfect amount of cinnamon. The line outside is always very long, but the wait is worth it. If you're not in the mood to wait for a table, they have a Togo window on the side that you can order from. The food at coronado island is so subpar and this is no exception. Twice I've gone and twice I've been disappointed. I found that my lunch was dry and soggy at the same time while lacking flavor. The potatoes were not seasoned at all and the texture was watery. The turkey was SO dry and barely edible. The roll was also extremely dry and not tasty. Back again. Monte Cristo was baked, then deep fried. Seemed to have corn flakes on it. Was big and delicious. I chose cole slaw as my side. Hubby said the Cobb salad was excellent. First went to Clayton's bistro, thinking it would be the same menu.. but didn't see anything I wanted, didn't get any service anyway so left. Went down the street to Claytons. Such great history and trappings from the 50s and before, including jukeboxes at each table, an old wooden telephone booth, a U-shaped soda fountain counter, and more. I could sit there all day and just soak up the atmosphere and imagine all of the folks who have been there before. Add to that, the food was excellent. We shared the corned beef hash with the thin home fry potatoes and a pancake. The portion was ample to fill us both up without being overstuffed. The service was attentive and very friendly. Been to Clayton's Coffee Shop a couple of times. Love the old school motif with a large old school counter and juke box. Have had the Chorizo Cha Cha Burro twice and it's all good. Chorizo is tasty served with black beans, eggs, avocado and feta cheese. Probably a few other items I did not mention. Small space but a booming business. Inside or outside dining. Great service. What happened to this place. Disorganized, dirty, food was terrible and the service was atrocious. Sat down to a dirty bar and was immediately asked what food I wanted. Mind you was not given a menu. Asked for coffee, was given broken cup, no spoon and never asked if I wanted a refill. The food arrived and it was raw vegetables in scrambled eggs trying to pass itself off as an omelette. Asked for rye bread, got white bread that was stale. Grits...ice cold. Hash browns...dry and over cooked. Server never came by, never checked. Stumbled upon this cute diner while exploring Coronado. My husband and I loved the history of the diner (as explained in the large menu) but weren't super impressed with everything else. We sat at the counter. My husband ordered the peanut butter protein smoothie while I ordered a coke and fried pickles. It took a good bit of time for the smoothie to arrive and it wasn't very good. The fried pickles took 30+ minutes to arrive which seems to be far too long for an appetizer. While it was an okay experience, I likely would not return if I visited the area again :( read more

Today I went to the walk side service area at like 230ish. The girl working the counter was an absolute gem. Her customer service was amazing and I've never encountered such sweet service at any place in San Diego yet. We are about to be stationed here so I've been house hunting and have a rough time (bad market) and she really brightened my day. I don't know her name but she has brown hair with blonde highlights on the undersides, she needs a raise! My first time at Clayton's was a mixed experience. It's a very small, very old school cafe with indoor and outdoor seating and quite a few bar seats. On the good side, loved the vibe and every employee was friendly and efficient. We chose to sit at the bar and order the Carnitas-Chorizo Hash and Lemon banana ricotta pancakes. The hash was very good but we just didn't care for the pancakes. I ordered black coffee and my first two cups were barely warm. Finally, my last refill was piping hot. They also have a walk up window outside so we ordered some assorted donut holes to go. The flavor wasn't bad but they just didn't taste that fresh. My best friend and I stopped by Claytons coffee shop as it was one of the few places that was open as early as we were awake in Coronado (7AM!!). We had no idea were stepping back into time for breakfast. We LOVED it. I got a dirty chai, and we shared a peanut butter French toast which had us intrigued when we walked in as it was a special. Both were so delicious. While we were ordering, I noticed the vintage register and just thought "HOW COOL!!" and then went to think what an awesome vibe this little u shaped diner had. We ended up googling the history and being shocked that it's been around since the 40s!!!!! For somewhere as much history as Claytons, we were both very impressed at the quality of food and service.
