Been to Clayton's Coffee Shop a couple of times. Love the old school motif with a large old school counter and juke box. Have had the Chorizo Cha Cha Burro twice and it's all good. Chorizo is tasty served with black beans, eggs, avocado and feta cheese. Probably a few other items I did not mention. Small space but a booming business. Inside or outside dining. Great service. The place runs like a well oiled machine from kitchen to servers. Always a wait but well worth it. Put this one on your list. read more

The place was amazing!!! Old dinner vibe was definitely brought to the table and was well welcomed. The food was great with generous servings. Small portions? Nope!!! I'm '6 "1 and I eat a lot and I had to take some home which was much appreciated especially because of the price (great prices). What happened to this place. Disorganized, dirty, food was terrible and the service was atrocious. Sat down to a dirty bar and was immediately asked what food I wanted. Mind you was not given a menu. Asked for coffee, was given broken cup, no spoon and never asked if I wanted a refill. The food arrived and it was raw vegetables in scrambled eggs trying to pass itself off as an omelette. Asked for rye bread, got white bread that was stale. Grits...ice cold. Hash browns...dry and over cooked. Server never came by, never checked. Another server came up and asked if I wanted anything else when it was clear I hadn't eaten anything. I asked for the check. The original server dropped it off and never said a word about anything. My first time at Clayton's was a mixed experience. It's a very small, very old school cafe with indoor and outdoor seating and quite a few bar seats. On the good side, loved the vibe and every employee was friendly and efficient. We chose to sit at the bar and order the Carnitas-Chorizo Hash and Lemon banana ricotta pancakes. The hash was very good but we just didn't care for the pancakes. I ordered black coffee and my first two cups were barely warm. Finally, my last refill was piping hot. They also have a walk up window outside so we ordered some assorted donut holes to go. The flavor wasn't bad but they just didn't taste that fresh. Today I went to the walk side service area at like 230ish. The girl working the counter was an absolute gem. Her customer service was amazing and I've never encountered such sweet service at any place in San Diego yet. We are about to be stationed here so I've been house hunting and have a rough time (bad market) and she really brightened my day. I don't know her name but she has brown hair with blonde highlights on the undersides, she needs a raise! She's the sweetest ever and if more people were as kind as her the world would be a better place! And definitely get the cinnamon crunch donut with your coffee! Her recommendation! read more

I've been to this classic diner a few times and always enjoy it. I got the chicken fried steak breakfast, with two eggs, sourdough toast, and breakfast potatoes. I'd asked to have gravy on the side, and when they didn't do it, they cheerfully took it back to make a new one. Everything was good, and I was able to take some home for another meal. My favorite Coronado Breakfast Restaurant with a 50's-60's vintage ambiance. Clayton's has a very large breakfast menu, generous portions, and friendly service. I also appreciate the fact that it opens at 6:00 AM. This restaurant has been a local favorite for many many years. You can belly up to the horseshoe bar, sit at a booth, or sit outside. The service is good and the food is decent. One thing that I can't understand is why the servers always bring everyone a huge glass of water without anyone asking for water. Often I see the glasses sit there without a sip being taken. The owner of the business is wasting money on water, energy, detergent and labor. Also, environmentally this is all causing extra unnecessary pollution. read more

Cherry coke was delicious and my lady loved the strawberry banana smoothie; "very fresh, not sweet". Mozzarella sticks hit too as they accompanied the burger and fries. My best friend and I stopped by Claytons coffee shop as it was one of the few places that was open as early as we were awake in Coronado (7AM!!). We had no idea were stepping back into time for breakfast. We LOVED it. I got a dirty chai, and we shared a peanut butter French toast which had us intrigued when we walked in as it was a special. Both were so delicious. While we were ordering, I noticed the vintage register and just thought "HOW COOL!!" and then went to think what an awesome vibe this little u shaped diner had. We ended up googling the history and being shocked that it's been around since the 40s!!!!! For somewhere as much history as Claytons, we were both very impressed at the quality of food and service. Definitely will plan to come back the next time I visit Coronado ! read more

A must visit breakfast that doubles as a time capsule. Remember the music box at the cafes with the scrolling menu and analog number and letter buttons... They still have those at each booth. Next time I think I'll sit at the counter so the experience will be more like a 50s vibe and I will ask the waitress if I can call her Flo! Loved this little breakfast spot that I found thanks to Yelp. It's tiny but we lucked out a got a table right away. I also noticed a walk up coffee window with a small line. Service was quick and super friendly. We started with the homemade cinnamon roll. At first I was like "it's just okay" but then we dug into the center and YUM it got delicious. It was so good I had to put it to the side so I would have room for my meal. We both got breakfast plates that we enjoyed, although I saw a lot of people eating sandwiches at 9 in the morning. I never leave reviews, but today I just couldn't help it. Stayed at the Hotel Del for Mother's Day weekend and wanted take-out for my Mother's Day breakfast because we knew everywhere would be packed. Thought we'd give Clayton's a try because of the amazing reviews. My husband called in our order at 630am, went to the order/take-out window around 645am for pick-up. The restaurant was not at all crowded or busy yet. He went way before "the rush". We ordered an acai bowl, veggie omelette (w/ham), asked for extra crispy potatoes, subbed the toast for french toast (yum! so excited!), a cup of strawberries & bananas, a rise & shine coffee and an iced vanilla latte. He came back and the potatoes weren't crispy, but that didn't bother me because he had to walk back to the hotel and they were expected to be a bit steamed in the box (which is why I asked for them crispy). But then, my omelette was missing the mushrooms . It was the main reason why I wanted the veggie omelette. I even second guessed myself thinking maybe it was my mistake, but I double checked the menu and it does say mushrooms are in the omelette. They asked my husband if he needed utensils and condiments. They gave one set of utensils, which is fine whatever. How would they know this huge breakfast w/two coffees were for 2ppl + toddler? For condiments, we got salt & pepper packets. That's fine I guess, but does french toast not come with butter and syrup anymore? Is ketchup not a condiment? Maybe they just don't have ketchup packets? Yes, it's partially husband's fault for not checking and not asking for specific condiments, but I also think this falls on quality of service even if it's a take-out order (AND while the restaurant wasn't chaotic). I guess that's part of the downfall of ordering out though. But dang, did I want my mushrooms + small side of french toast topped with powered sugar, smothered with butter and drowning in syrup. I'm pregnant with baby #2 so maybe this is just my hormones raging, lol. I'll let go of the utensils and condiments, but I feel gypped on the mushrooms. We did add a tip as we always do (even for take-out) because times are rough on everyone and we believe in pushing good karma into the universe. Annnd, they still get a couple of stars from me because the coffee was good. Omelette was still good even if it was missing the mushrooms. Le sigh. read more

We came to Clayton's 2x during our week long trip at the request of my partner as he really enjoyed Clayton's! We were initially drawn in by the fact that it's a historical landmark & I can totally see why. It's like it's frozen and time and we're transported back to the 40's. Love it! Clayton's seems like an institution! It has a few locations on Coronado: *Clayton's Coffee Shop - this spot *Clayton's Mexican takeout -- it's at the same location as this "diner" but the window is at the side of the building with a separate menu of Mexican food offerings. You can also order coffee + donuts in the AM from this window too! *Clayton's Bakery & Bistro - a little more modern & hipster with marble tables sand le creuset mugs. We also had a delightful breakfast there. See my review on their page! I really enjoyed both items that I tried: *MACHACA SCRAMBLE (3 eggs, machaca beef, cheese served with beans or hashbrowns & a flour tortilla) - SUPER flavorful and chock full of beef! *FARMER BENNY'S MARKET HASH (hashbrowns, seasonal veggies & 2 poached eggs topped with our green goddess hollandaise (creamy avocado, jalapeno & cilantro) -- The seasonal veggies on this were so fresh & PERFECTLY cooked. It was squash, zucchini & asparagus. I had the hollandaise on the side & that was perfect for me. I practically licked this plate clean. The grill closes 30 mins before the published closing time. So if you want to eat the actual closing time is 30 mins before the advertised time. I have a problem with this. Either stay open during hours or don't. You shouldn't have to know the local rules. Response: We were there last Night 4/21/24 at 8:30 and were told we could have desert. The grill was Closed. There were 4 in our Party and instead of a nice hefty dinner tab...we got 2 milkshakes and a piece of Pie...and went home and made Dinner. We would love to come back but we need the grill to be open so we can eat, or let us know when the grill closes. read more

A cute local diner right on Orange/75 in downtown Coronado. I've been here a few times when I had family visiting in town and with my husband. He is stationed on the Navy base and it's on the way home from work. I stopped here on a Thursday afternoon in January and was able to walk right into the u shaped counter bar seating. For a breakfast combo, I paid a reasonable $20 for my meal and $25 with tip. Overall if you want classic diner style breakfast/brunch and coffee, give this place a try!
