Staying at the Del Coronado so I was looking for a breakfast spot for a short Sunday walk. They are a half mile from the resort so it was the perfect distance on a perfect Sunday morning. The reviews mention the 1940-50's diner vibe and that's exactly what it is. Totally old school legit diner. Walk in and seat yourself so says the sign, so I took a spot at the counter near the open kitchen. At 7:30 am I was only the second customer but a half our later it was full. Staff was very attentive. I ordered the Carnitas & Chorizo Hash breakfast special. It had everything you need, eggs, chorizo, carnitas, black beans, potatoes, pico de gallo, and a dollop of sour cream. It had just enough heat to feel it at the back of your throat but not to overwhelm the flavors which were great. Highly recommended. read more

Great local business with indoor and outdoor seating. A nice counter inside with a definite 1950s vibe. Service was fast and friendly. Ample portion sizes. I had the vegetable / egg croissant sandwich. Well cooked eggs, good amount of veg, nice portion of avocado. Breakfast potatoes were different, thin / au gratin sliced potatoes - little on the firm side, but still tasty after a little bit of added salt and pepper. This was bumped to a 4 star based on the slice of home made coconut cream pie I got to go. Crust was thick, good crisp. Custard was perfect, good amount of coconut. The Good: *Filthy Chai Latte (Chai w/ ×3 shots of espresso) was #fuckingdelicious. Nice blend of Chai spices that stood up to the three shots of espresso and had just the right creaminess from the oat milk. *Fast, friendly service *Exterior ordering window for quick drink to-go orders *Open daily at 5 a.m. The Meh: *Popular spot that's really busy even in the late afternoons, so be prepared to wait. The Ugly: *Unnecessary $1 upcharge for oat milk. Every other type of "milk" (vegan or not) was free but not oat. I'm not being cheap; it's just one of my pet peeves when restaurants do bizarre upcharges for no good reason, like charging extra for brown rice vs. white rice. Five stars for ambiance & service, we were just smitten with this fabulous fifties diner, definitely one of a kind and not to be missed! My friend enjoyed his breakfast and it looked tasty. Had to deduct two stars for the worst tuna melt I've ever had. It arrived with the tuna so steaming hot I could not touch it. All the cheese had melted out onto the plate. I literally pulled it apart and waited as steam continued to waft, hoping to cool it down so I could take a bite. Finally, I picked it up only to find the other side a soggy mess. This obviously had been thrown into a microwave for some odd reason, so disgusting. Sent it right back. Came here with some friends for breakfast on a Saturday morning. For a Saturday it was busy, but the wait wasn't actually very long which was surprising. The decor is cute, like an old fashion diner. Bathrooms available and well taken care of. I got the yogurt with granola and bananas due to some diet restrictions, but the rest of my friends we ate with enjoyed their food and the biscuits and gravy was so good. Our server was attentive and did a wonderful job. Prices of the food was amazing, especially being in coronado. For two adults ordering average meals it was around 35 dollars for the both of us... and my husband got a steak lol. Only downside I didn't like was the walkways to tables and such are very narrow. Consider Clayton's a must do if you are in Coronado. A great diner that has been here since 1942. The service and food quality are simply outstanding. One of the best breakfasts I have had. My order (biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs and home fries) came out so fast if I did not know better I would swear they knew I was coming and what I wanted to order! The coffee is also excellent and my cup was never empty. I also loved the atmosphere, horseshoe counter service (there are also tables) and great music playing. My boyfriend is stationed in coronado, therefore I visit a lot and one of the places that's a must-go every time for me is Clayton's coffee. I'm writing this in 2023 where the prices of food, coffee...practically EVERYTHING, has gone up. On one of our usual weekend mornings, we stop by Clayton's, ordered the following: -large iced coffee -regular (idk it's like the wake up drink but practically black iced coffee with a shot of espresso) -a lil bag of donut holes that had about 6 in them What's the total you may ask? A whopping. $5.30. If you go to any other coffee shop, you'll be lucky if you can buy hot water with flavoring for that price. It is absolutely insane to me how cheap this place is as I cannot even find anything in that price point back where I live in NorCal (not the bay so cheaper cost of living than San Diego). Quality is always good and consistent. I really wish there was a place like this back home! :( for now it'll just be reserved for my monthly SD visits. read more

Waited to get served coffee in a small cup, ordered waited 20 minutes. It came, very cold. Such great history and trappings from the 50s and before, including jukeboxes at each table, an old wooden telephone booth, a U-shaped soda fountain counter, and more. I could sit there all day and just soak up the atmosphere and imagine all of the folks who have been there before. Add to that, the food was excellent. One of us went with the Denver omelet, sausage on the side was good, one person had the avocado toast, and one person the breakfast burrito - which is very good. They have some interesting potatoes on the side for breakfast that are sliced thin and are crispy - something between hashbrowns and cubed potatoes that were really good. What a happy restaurant to visit. Music was oldies from the 80's so it was perfect! Heard songs I had not heard in quite a while. It is a small place but big on service and food. I had a sandwich and soup. The BLT was perfect. Bacon cooked crisp but not burned and the lettuce and tomatoes cut just right that they don't fall out of the sandwich. The tortilla soup had a spice to it that made me wish I could order a bigger bowl. Other ordered the French dip with au jus he did not talk only focused on his delicious food. We shared Mac and cheese. What a great surprise it was really creamy and the bread crumbs just added to the taste. We also shared a cherry milk shake. Wow! Highly recommend. Stumbled upon this cute diner while exploring Coronado. My husband and I loved the history of the diner (as explained in the large menu) but weren't super impressed with everything else. We sat at the counter. My husband ordered the peanut butter protein smoothie while I ordered a coke and fried pickles. It took a good bit of time for the smoothie to arrive and it wasn't very good. The fried pickles took 30+ minutes to arrive which seems to be far too long for an appetizer. While it was an okay experience, I likely would not return if I visited the area again :( read more

We have been eyeing this spot for quite sometime and we finally got to try it this past week. Our server was Hector and he was great! The atmosphere of the diner is great! So old fashioned & reminded me of the 50's. Def a time I'd like to visit in the past. I had the Turkey Bacon Avocado on Sourdough with Crinkle Cut Fries & it was great! My husband had the Chicken Strips and Crinkle Cut Fries. Also very tasty! The fries were well seasoned and the portions are a great size! He also had a Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake which was very rich and tasty! My daughter got to enjoy a chocolate chip cookie as she had just had lunch prior to our visit and it was definitely meant for two! Well worth the visit and we will be back soon! The food at coronado island is so subpar and this is no exception. Twice I've gone and twice I've been disappointed. I found that my lunch was dry and soggy at the same time while lacking flavor. The potatoes were not seasoned at all and the texture was watery. The turkey was SO dry and barely edible. The roll was also extremely dry and not tasty. This is a very popular breakfast place on Coronado Island, we had about a 10-15 minute wait to be seated. It's looks like a 1950s diner inside, big comfortable booths or you can sit at the bar which covers the middle of the restaurant. I had a huge waffle and oatmeal, that waffle was so good I forgot to take a picture of it. This place was crowded when we got here and crowded when we left, no doubt it's the place to be for breakfast on Coronado Island!!! read more

I absolutely adore Clayton's! They have my favorite coffee in town, the cinnamon honey latte! It's not overly sweet and they use the perfect amount of cinnamon. The line outside is always very long, but the wait is worth it. If you're not in the mood to wait for a table, they have a Togo window on the side that you can order from.
