While in Traverse City, we decided to take a detour on our way home and head up to the Mackinac Bridge and the U.P. Using my handy dandy Yelp iPhone app I found Clyde's and knew this is where we HAD to have lunch. It's definitely old school but it isn't one of those nostalgic 1950's drive-ins. There weren't any spots open to pull our car in so we opted to hit the counter. The staff and the people around us were all very friendly. My husband ordered the Big C, a 3/4 lb burger, I had a cheeseburger and we shared french fries and onion rings. The burgers are fantastic, juicy and flavorful. My husband demolished his beast of a burger and then finished off the last little bit of mine. I wasn't impressed with french fries or onion rings. Honestly, I'd say skip them. I was going to get a shake or malt for the road but was so full by the end of my burger that I didn't. I'm still sad about this foolish choice and have been craving an old fashioned malt ever since. read more

Was in St. Ignace for a wedding this July and stopped in the drive up with my son. We both got a Bison Burger and some onion rings. We could barely stop to speak to each other as we devoured our tasty burgers. The onion rings were perfect as well, the onion doesn't even pull out when you are biting into them and you can tell they use fresh oil. By far the best burger joint in northern Michigan. They have chocolate malts like "the old days" and will happily make it EXTRA malty on request. Fried fish basket is great too but I usually just get my regular, Big C. Prices are veryvery reasonable -- a family of four can get out of Clyde's for ~$20. One of the trends at little burger stands is to use fountain iced tea. Not here! Fresh-brewed iced tea goes great with the Big C burger! I love Clyde's, but I love it like I might love a crazy uncle. Sure, there are flaws--incredibly limited seating, waitresses who have been working at Clyde's since before I was born and are most interested in taking care of the regular clientele and breaded mushrooms that are more bread than 'shroom. If you can see past that (and the truck-stop-esque bathrooms), you're in for a treat. A big, fat, greasy, cheesy treat. They serve kids meals in paper cars, which my kids just love. Came here on our circle tour of Lake Michigan, was one of our best stops of the whole week. Sat at the end of the counter, wasn't packed. Service was fine. We both had 1/2 lb bacon cheeseburgers & shared a vanilla shake. Ordered onion rings but did not care for them, they were a tad fishy. But really, didn't have room anyway. The best burgers and onion rings in Michigan, if not the Midwest. The BIG C lives up to its Colossal name. Very delicious and filling! Scrumptious onion rings top it off. Very reasonably priced for the family. You can either sit inside by the counter or stay and be waited on in your car. Waitress was courteous and fast. Back in the day when I used to pound Michigan's UP for trout & salmon, the Clyde's locations in both St Ignace and Manistique were the locations of many of my meals. It was great fast-food at a reasonable price. 25 years later, not much has changed. I had the signature 'Big-C' burger and fries. Both were just as I remembered; very tasty. The folks running the flat-top and fryers know their business, which isn't as simple as it sounds. I watched the two cooks operating those stations blaze thru a lunch hour without skipping a beat, and heard no complaints from the patrons. Clyde's is a regional landmark and a must for anyone wanting to experience yooper culture. Be warned however that they will be busy. inside dining is limited to a small counter area, but there are picnic tables outside if you don't want the drive-in experience. and they are cash only. the food is always fresh and tasty and the prices aren't bad but they are not as cheap as national chain burger joints. staff can be a little distracted, but I have never seen them rude. they could be better at acknowledging new arrivals. worth the price and worth the wait. read more

I guess I'm young and didn't understand how their drive-in worked, but just pull up and park under the long car port. A waitress will come out to your vehicle and take your order or there is a very small area inside to eat. I had the whitefish sandwich and it was delicious. My kids had their lunches delivered in a 50's style cardboard car. Very unique and made the kids excited. I would highly recommend this place to anyone heading into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. read more

I finally stopped and it was worth the wait. There is a big menu of fried appetizers, cheese sticks, green beans, chicken strips and of course onion rings or fries. Old school shakes and Coke products. It was very busy with full drive up spots and a line out the door. So I just ordered cheese burgers straight up. It's fun to watch the open kitchen and the food was delicious. Super friendly staff that really know how to put out the food. I could handle the burger, small vanilla shake but couldn't finish my onion rings.
