Nope, not a fan of this truck. I'm a lover of the Thai food and this just fell flat for me. Greasy spring rolls and green curry. I also asked for extra vegetables in my curry. Okay, so after checking into Hotel San Jose, I was hungry, but knew I had some work to do. I asked the person at the front desk, he recommended for quick easy food to bring back, to go to Coat & Thai. Walked up a couple blocks, and stopped here. Ordered the Tom Kha soup and the Red Curry. So, both are basically soup. Others mentioned that the curries are thin. Yep, they are. It is certainly broth based. But...it doesn't matter...the red curry was AWESOME. It had the best taste. It does have veggeis and meat (your choice of) in it. Once you get over that it isn't thick (which means it is more healthy...less cream)...it rocks. It had so much flavor. I basically treated it as a soup. Then I moved onto the soup...eh. Very little flavor. Plan was to get two things as wasn't sure if I'd like it...and plan perfect. $8.50 for thai veggie fried rice and a bottle of water...I was pleased. One of the First of the food trucks to open on sunday also....11am...most do not open until Noon. We always wanted to try a food park...stumbled on it trying to get to the cafe across the street, that had an hour and half wait, and was 10 times the price. Here we sat on bright green and clean picnic tables, with umbrellas. You eat as a community with everyone else. Funny you get to listen to people talk about family stuff or "why do you not make more room for me" between couples lolol. No smoking at the tables either...NICE. They have recycle and trash bins, gotta love it! The people selling local goods set up shop here too so you can wonder around after you eat. Huge Portions...you will need the walk. read more

They had me at their catchy name. Seriously I spotted them from the road one day, and was back the next. Fun food truck on SOCO serving pretty darn good Thai food fast. Had the Pad See Ew - was a bit too peppery for my taste, but was otherwise really good. Also tried their Thai Coffee - delish! Only been here once and even though I gave it 2 stars I might try it again. I ordered the PIneapple fried rice which was decent but I've definitely had better. The main reason for the low rating was that it took so long to get my food and they weren't extremely busy at the time. There are many other places I'd try and go to before returning here. read more

Stopped by here when I was walking down SOCO with a friend from out of town. Ordered the Dumplings and the egg rolls, along with a MangoSteen Berry Canned beverage. Stopped by the trailer park at 6th and Waller on the way home after deciding I would rather die then cook a meal. Picked out Coat and Thai because they smelled soooo good. Got the Pad Kee Mao and spring rolls to-go. I didn't realize the noodles were going to be the big flat ones but whatever. Was not spicy whatsoever, maybe you need to let them know it's ok to crank up the heat. Spring rolls were fresh and tasty, though the peanut sauce they included was a little sweeter than I like. Overall probably a great spot for drunchies or Thai fix in a pinch. Not good for those of you who have tried a bazillion different authentic, San Francisco Thai food restaurants. read more

I picked this truck in the little trailer village 'cause I was jonseing for some noodles. The wait was long, but that was understandable because there were a bazillion people due to SXSW. The pad prik pao with chicken is phenomenal - I've been to Thailand (huge fan of Thai food) and I've never had one this good. I keep finding myself craving it and coming back. ~Atmosphere~ Well, it's a food cart on South Lamar...so...a cart atmosphere? :P Even on a weekend there is generally plenty of seating in front of the cart which is great because when it's busy there can be a bit of a wait for your food so you don't want to stray too far so you can hear your name called. ~Service~ Mixed. They did mess up a friends order [he ordered chicken, they gave him beef] when he brought it up to have them fix it the first person copped a bit of attitude and demanded he bring up his receipt to prove that he had ordered chicken. Before he could go off on the woman, the owner scolded her and took my friends food and started to fire up a new plate with chicken. So at least 1 person in the cart knows what good customer service is the other not so much. ~Food~ I've only had the Pad Thai so keep that in mind. The pad thai is pretty decent. It's ranged from "okay" to "pretty good" each time I've had it. ~Price~ You get what you pay for ~Overall~ This is not a destination you go out of your way to visit. There is better Thai food across Austin. That said, if you're in the SoCo area and have a hankering for Thai, this is not a bad place and is on par with most of the other carts in the nearby vicinity. read more

Tried this place out last might! Got the stir fry, cannot remember nor spell thedishe I ordered. But.. it was amazing! Two large scoops of rice and the chicken stir fry was nicely wrapped in foil. The chicken was moist, the brown sauce is absolutely delicious and the veggies were nice and soft with the exception of the carrots which still had a nice firmness to them which was refreshing. Sunday night was not busy, waited maybe 5 minutes for the food and the gentleman at the counter was very sweet. Cant wait to go back and try the pad thai! read more

It's been about 9 months since I moved to Austin and I'm still on the prowl for the best Thai food in the area. It was another Friday afternoon and I decided to take my lunch break out of the office (for a change) and was itchin' for some asian flavors (for those of you that read my reviews...you'd notive that this itch hits nearly daily and it's an itch i just need to scratch!). Coat and Thai is located right within the hustle and bustle of South Congress' food truck arena. I've had the curry, the steamed dumplings, the tom yum soup and the basil stir fry chicken. The dumplings were decent, made much better with the quintessential thai food sweet soy sauce. The tom yum soup was alright, absolutely have had better and a friend commented that it tasted a bit fishy, but I still finished ever drop. The stir fry dishes are definitely better elsewhere, but like most of the food at Coat and Thai, it does the trick. Would I go again? yeah, sure....If I'm trying to be somewhat healthier and not munch on a Mighty Cone chicken and avocado cone. One bone to pick though...the wait can be a bit long, but thats moreso because im in patient and its neighboring food trucks are flash fast. read more

Like like like. Coat & Thai is not all about the funny name, fellas, they also have yummy food and generous portions. Most of their food is spicy, which is a drawback for a non-Texan lady like myself, but some of the dishes are yummy enough that I want to keep stealing them from other people's plates even though they burn my mouth. A good example is the basil fried rice. They even had a few gluten-free options for my mommy :) (She had the curry, it was quite good.) The people who work there have always been nice in my many trips there, but do keep in mind you will wait for your food a good 15-30 minutes, depending on the day and the time. Went here because my other favorite stand in the area moved. I tried the Cashew Chicken and was disappointed to find it was no where near as good as the ones i've had in restaurants. In fact, it's bland and covered in that generic brown sauce the cheapest chinese food places put on everything. I also tried the Crab Rangoons because the menu says they are hand made. Sounded like a plus and for over $1 each they should be great right? Wrong. The cream cheese is flavorless, almost no hint of the crab, and not a bit of sweetness to it. Best pad thai & stir fry in Austin! I come here almost once a week as I am addicted. Their pad thai is fill of flavor and a filling portion. I always get chicken, the first time the chicken was a bit dry but had to of been a dry batch as my other visits have been delicious and moist. I personally love the E-2 stir fry, don't be thrown off by the Chile peppers representing spicy as it is not spicy. Two large balls of rice accompany the chicken bell pepper carrots and onions which are cooked in this amazing sweet and spicy brown sauce that I cannot get enough of. Highly reccomend mixing your rice with the sauce, makes me drool just thinking about the stir fry. Always had great service and food is always fresh and piping hot. They package it well in foil then styrofoam so it does maintain its temperature well. read more

I had completely forgotten I had eaten at this place until I stumbled upon it in my quest for tofu pad thai. So this review is more in regards to their service than their food. But to be honest, I've only ever had the pad thai and spring rolls here. I think it's good, not great. The pad thai was a little greasy but edible. The service I received here put the nail in the coffin for an issue I'd been debating with myself for a while; to tip, or not to tip? That is the question I've been pondering when eating at a trailer/counter-service establishment. First, the girl sitting in the trailer was wearing her sunglasses. Granted, yes, it was the middle of the day, but it just seems a little rude to be wearing them when a customer is trying to talk to you. At least take them off when someone walk up to order. Second, she didn't even bother to greet me! I've worked in restaurants long enough to know that you HAVE to at least greet your customers; they are the source of your income!!! Or maybe I'm wrong, maybe the owners of Coat and Thai pay their workers a decent hourly wage; good for them if they do. REGARDLESS, acting like the ice princess when I'm giving my order is not the way to win my business should I decide to come back. Third, after taking my order and acting so cold towards me, she asks for my card and rings me up for $100 more than what my total actually was. I understand that mistakes happen, but don't act like a snob and then attempt to turn on the charm when you screw something up. The manager fixed the mistake and was very nice and apologetic for the inconvenience. I told her it was fine but that little snot-nosed girl pissed me off. I made sure the the zero on the tip line was big enough to see from space. This experience, along with another at a different eatery, made me realize that some people just do NOT deserve a tip. This is a food truck trailer, to those who did not know. We only came for the Thai tea, but the tea was died a carrot orange color and the die effected the taste and turned our teeth orange. We were also interested in a Thai desert, but they don't offer any. Overall this was not a good experience because 2/3 people I came with did not enjoy the tea. They do accept credit cards and the checkout person was nice, so these were positives. Go Local: no After months of attempting to get my family to go to SoCo's trailer parks, I finally succeeded. My mom and I decided to stop here both because it was new and because of the OVERWHELMING heat, we couldn't walk any farther. Put simply, this is the best Thai food I've had in Austin. Maybe it's because I try not to order the same thing twice and haven't ordered the N-3 and E-3 before or maybe because it was hot and I was hungry. Either way, it was delicious and the portions were large enough that between what my mom and I had left over I was able to make an entire third meal.
