Cold Craft originally came to clean and to perform a safety inspection on our furnace. While inspecting the furnace, their technician found one side of the heating rod is badly burned, which can produce carbon monoxide. Learning from the technician that my wife is 9 month pregnant and is due any day, Susan from Cold Craft contacted my wife and me to give us the detailed information for the new basic furnace installation. She also helped to expedite the installation before the baby come, so that our baby can have the warmth from the new furnace, and be safe from the possibility of harmful carbon monoxide. We had an A/C system installed by another company when we first moved to the area. After ten years of not really ever being comfortable, that system died. I interviewed three heating and air conditioning contractors and Cold Craft really stood out. The owner himself came out to take a look at our situation and recommended a zoning system to balance the heating and cooling in our tri-level house. Just talking with him was an education - he is obviously very knowledgeable about the trade-offs of the various approaches. Even though Cold Craft was not the cheapest, I had the most confidence in them and contracted with them for the installation. In the process, they discovered that the previous system had been poorly designed and badly installed. Cold Craft took the time and effort to make sure that the new system was adequate for our needs and customized to our house. That was nearly five years ago and the system has performed flawlessly with much better comfort levels throughout the house (and a savings on utilities to boot!). But over the extremely cold weather we had early in December 2013, the heater began to fail intermittently. We have a fairly complex installation and the problem was hard to troubleshoot. Cold Craft had to make multiple trips, working with the manufacturer's tech support to finally isolate the problem to a bad blower motor. This was over the holidays and Cold Craft worked with us to try to get service techs to us as quickly as possible. The manufacturer mis-diagnosed the problem at first, which required more trips by Cold Craft. Eventually the problem was fixed and Cold Craft made it a point to only charge us for the technicians' visits that really applied to the final problem. That saved us a lot! I can highly recommend Cold Craft for new installation or service. The technicians are friendly, take care not to dirty your house, and really know their stuff. read more

Both of my units (upstairs and downstairs) went down on Father's Day which was a record breaking day for heat in San Jose. My regular company was booked out 3+ weeks. I contacted Cold Craft upon their recommendation. Robert, the tech, was amazing. Prompt, courteous, professional, experienced, fast and extremely knowledgable. He was able to repair one unit on the spot with a new capacitor. The other unit is leaking freon and he had to schedule another appointment to track the leak. He took time out to explain the processes in detail, how my unit works, and the variety of outcomes based on the test. He even made recommendations on my filters. I received a ridiculous letter from the HOA association informing me that my A/C unit, which was installed 5 years ago, was installed incorrectly HOA required me to remove/replace or relocate my A/C system Strange that this letter was sent to me 5 years after the A/C unit was installed. So many things wrong with this company. They have poor organization and dishonest, fraudulent business practices. They will rob you every chance they get, all the while doing substandard work. Had them install heating and air. They tried to overbill me twice, failed city code twice, and misrepresented their work. This is the only yelp post I have made, so I had to make an account to share how bad these guys are. They quoted 7k and tried to bill 10k, said it was a billing mistake when I called to complain. The job was actually far less work than they had quoted, since we had existing electrical and plumbing ready, but they did not discount. We asked if they would pour a concrete slab for the condensor, they said they would. Instead they provided a flimsy foam base that will not last, and was already warped on installation. The technician even said it was "a joke" while installing it, knowing it was substandard. When we complained, they said they would provide a traditional rigid gypsum base, but they were not able to do that either. Foam remained. Once complete, and I had the city come for inspection, they failed electrical, as cold craft used the wrong guage ground wire outside. Also failed electrical because they placed the shutoff too close to existing electrical. After moving the box, there was a mess of adhesive and a hole in the building, which they left as such. They failed mechanical, as they did not secure the flex conduit going to the furnace. They also tore out a good 1x1 foot section of drywall above our furnace to pull a 1 inch pipe through, which was easily accessible already. They did not patch the hole when they finished, telling me I had to do it myself... which I did. Had I not, it would have failed fire code too. They hauled away working components without consultation... for their own refurbishing or recycling, such as the evaporator coil we had (lots of copper), which was new and had never been used... Instead they just charged us for installation of their own new coil. They were unable to take cash for payment. Had to give them credit card info over phone, which had to be repeated 5 or so times, between two different people. A year after installation, the furnace control board had a failed relay. I told them this, and they purposefully sent out technicians multiple times to diagnose the problem, test, and repair a warranteed part, so that they could charge hundreds in separate service calls, knowing I had specifically asked that they not do so.. as I already told them the problem and that the part was warranteed. When I complained, they said they would refund me, but did not. Oh right, they also overcharged on every component.. For example, the thermostat alone was nearly 3x the cost of the exact same model on amazon.com. I have no idea how they are diamond certified. I think their contractors are independantly licensed, and do not know about the workings of the company, or billing. Likewise, the company does not understand the products they sell or how to install them. It is just one big mess. read more

We bought our heater from Cold Craft back in 2001. The sales person was very nice and offered us a very competitive quote. The sale and installation was great. However, there service/repair department is a different story. This company in my opinion takes advantage of people during the extreme cold weather. Their Diagnostic fee is $139.00. Other competitors I found were $65.00 - $120.00, unfortunately I didn't do my home work prior. My appointment was from 2-4 PM. I get a phone call at 3:48 PM from the service tech that he is on his way. He doesn't get there until 4:15 PM. It takes him close to 30 minutes to figure out why there is no power. Finally figures it out that it is the on/off switch on the wall. The charge for the part and labor is $95.00 on top of the $139.00, so a grand total of $234.00 to replace a $10.00 part that took 15 minutes to replace. I asked the service tech if he felt that was reasonable and fair. His response was, that is what the company makes me charge so I have to charge that. I wanted to see if I was being unreasonable regarding this charge of $234.00. After all, I was told by their CEO that I didn't have experience with furnace repairs. The highest one company told me was $175.00, the lowest I got was $115.00. Not wanting to be unreasonable, myself, I took the highest quote and asked for a $60.00 credit. No dice, they would not credit me $60.00. So my advise, do your home work before calling them. Just to let you know, the $139.00 DOES NOT go towards your repair. Other competitors have diagnostics charges as well, but they put that towards the repair bill if you chose to have them repair it. COLD CRAFT DOES NOT DO THAT. I had an issue with my furnace which was installed by Coldcraft. Their repair services should have a 1 yr warranty. The exact issue happened again 9 mos later. The repairman said there was a 1 yr warranty on service. I was billed for work that should have been under warranty. The CEO told me that their warranty is only 90 days for parts, since no parts were installed, the work was not covered. Also, the repairman had made a note for a recommendation for future work, which was used against me by the CEO, who said that since I declined having the recommended work done, they wouldn't warrant the services performed and I was welcome to find someone else to do the work. I liked the repairmen, but don't like that they don't honor their warranty. I will not recommend Coldcraft based on this encounter. read more

Cold Craft was the most experienced professional contractor I have ever worked with. From start to finish, they excelled in every aspect. When Robert intially came out to discuss the project, he spent an hour and a half explaining things to me and answering every possible question I could possibly come up with.Another plus was that they are Diamond Certified -- a rating they highly deserve.They finished the job on time and when they cleaned up I couldn't tell they had been there because they cleaned up so well. When I had to reroute one pvc pipe, they came out quickly and made the adjustment. With their 18 month buy back program, how can you go wrong? I hired this company to change our heater. By just talking to the owner I didn't even bothered calling anyone else. They maybe more or they maybe less than other companies but what was important for me was to get the job done right. Our heater was an older model and they had to do some special modification which the owner did not up charged us for it at all. I might of found a cheaper company out there but I'm glad we went with these guys. We were so happy with the quality of the heater and workmanship that we even hired them to do our companies warehouse heater as well. Perfect work done again. They angled it so that it would heat the specific area that we wanted to heat up. For the third time we hired them to fix our broken heater and thermostat in our showroom. Again another perfect job done. We actually got price from another person for this repair and cold crafts was cheaper. I can't say nothing but the best about these guys. I've used this company for the first time for a basic cleaning/maintenance on my furnace. When the tech showed up my furnace did not immediately turned on so I was told I would have to be charged a service call ($69) and would be given a quote for the estimated repair costs. I said I was not interested in paying for a service call (I have home warranty insurance for that). I just wanted a basic cleaning of my furnace. Still they insisted that since the tech showed up I'd still have to pay $69 even if he did not touch the furnace. After a couple of attempts the furnace finally started so the tech checked with his boss and was given the green light to start cleaning the furnace. Looking at my frustration, the tech was apologetic about the whole situation. After the work was done, the tech told me I had to pay for a $28 truck fee (yes truck fee!!!) on top of the price I was quoted for the maintenance. I called their office again to tell the manager that he never mentioned this fee to me. He agreed and told the tech not to charge me that fee. What a hassle for a basic maintenance service!!! The furnace is now cleaned and working fine but needless to say I won't use this company again. Too much hassle!!! I can't imagine what it would be like if I'd hired them for actual repair on my furnace. read more

I am totally impressed with this company and their professionalism! Last fall Cold Craft came to my house to inspect our furnaces, which were over 23 years old. Our utility bills in the winter were well over $400 and we almost never used the upstairs furnace and used the downstairs furnace frugally. The technician inspected both furnaces and told us that the upstairs one was still OK because it had not had much use over the years. However, the downstairs one in our garage was a different story and it was determined to be in very poor shape and a serious safety hazard. In fact, the heat exchanger was cracked and there was a possibllity that we had a potential carbon monoxide issue as well. Cold Craft replaced the furnace with a 95% efficiency one in one day and we could immediately tell the difference. The unit was much quieter and our utility bills dropped to around $250. This spring Cold Craft added duct work to the furnace because they determined that the builder of our house had not utilized enough ducting for optimal air flow. They explained to us why we needed to do this and even showed us the air flow calculations. It was great to work with such knowledgeable people at Cold Craft and I would definitely use their services again. read more

I've been having intermittent problems with my furnace so I called Cold Craft and they sent out their technician, Robert. Since the problem was intermittent and the furnace was working at the time, he couldn't find anything wrong. But he left me his cell phone number and told me to call him if the problem reoccurred. It did and I was able to give him the error code that was flashing on the furnace (he showed me how to read it). He then gave me some suggestions on what to look for and how to fix it. I tried several things but was unable to fix it myself. I called CC back and they sent Robert out again. He did a thorough test of all the things that could be associated with that error code and found that I had an inducer motor that was failing. He came back the next day with a new motor and was able to install it in no time flat. Then he proceeded to check everything out to make sure it would not fail again. I am very happy with his work and pleased to have heat again in this cold weather. The charges are very reasonable. Robert is very professional and thorough. I would not hesitate to recommend Cold Craft and particularly Robert for all your HVAC problems. This should be a 10 star rating but I'm only allowed 5. read more

I have had the pleasure of working with Cold Craft on several occasions and each time they were knowledgeable and professional. They have provided services from a simple heater tune up to completely replacing the heating unit. On one occasion, just before Christmas, I woke up to a cold house....not unusual..... but on this morning I was looking forward to hosting my WHOLE family (including a baby less than 6 months old) for our holiday celebration. It turned out that my thermostat died. A call to Cold Craft netted in a new thermostat in time to warm my house for my family. Needless to say when it came time to replace my entire heater I called Cold Craft again. The intent was to replace the heater with a similar style/capacity. When the heater was installed and they tested it it didn't work properly ....... so they immediately got another unit (which also didn't work). The frustrated installation person drove all the way up to the East Bay (I live in San Jose) to get another replacement -- which also failed. But the story ends on a GREAT note. At this point the CEO of Cold Craft got on the phone with the manufacturer and ultimately got me an upgraded unit -- for the price of the basic unit. I was very apprehensive about the whole project since I knew nothing whatsoever about furnaces or air conditioning systems. As a single woman, I had to find a company I could truly trust, and I found that here. great company! our carrier furnace 20 plus years old went out (very cold out) (December) they gave us a space heater to stay warm till the next day (robert) are service tech was on time went right to work, found the problem and was out of here in about a hour and a half .said not to get rid of our system it was top of the line in the early 90s and was in very good shape (what a relief!) when it's time for a new system we will call cold craft (only) (always go with a company that knows your'.e type of hvac) cheaper in the long run ( great work! ) read more
