Thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience here. Made last minute reservations online same day but decided to dine at the bar after arriving. For a cold weekday evening the place was pretty lively. Hostess and bartending staff were both very friendly and we were greeted immediately upon arrival. All of the suggestions made by the bartender were spot on! Paloma cocktail - very good choice. Tasted great and not too strong as some Paloma cocktails tend to be. Only downside is it was heavy on the ice but I would still order again. Shrimp tacos- amazing! The order comes with two but I added a third and it was the right choice for sure. If you're looking for a light meal you can get away with two but if you're really hungry get the extra. Churros- also amazing and my face dish. I was expecting the traditional churros but these were a nice twist. We shared ours and the only thing I'd do differently next time is order my own! Joe was here for this event without Josh and it only enhanced the experience (no shade to Josh) Today we tried new stuff to give our honest feedback back on everything: For starters we went with the: Tuna Tostada and it was 10/10 no feedback don't change it. The Tlayuda was everything you would want a (Mexican) pizza to be another 9/10 come to Colita. The Lamb barbacoa was just a bit too sweet for our liking but nothing was done wrong with the dish. Very very good taco at a 7/10 EAT THE ZUCHINNI. do not ask me any questions 10/10 Finished it off with a Shrimp Taco and it was even better than we remembered. So so good get it or be square. I live only four blocks from Colita, but I hadn't been there for a while on the cold November night when on my way home--and on the spur of the moment--I stopped to have a bite to eat. After some confusion over table availability, I was escorted to a two-top by a young man (the manager?). After checking the coat I'd doffed, he guided me past hoserie-snagging mother-in-law tongue Sansevieria planted next to our pathway. I'm 89 years old and walk with a cane--his attention was unusual and very much appreciated. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Molly was my server, and she had her hands full with me. Not only am I totally deaf in one ear and half deaf in the other, Colita is noisier than a Yagul cavern full of howler monkeys.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Also, I couldn't read the menu because I didn't have my reading glasses with me. Molly was not deterred. She bent down, got close to my half-good ear's hearing aid and gave me her recommendations. I ordered her top favorite, beef tartare, as well as a Sidecar, which despite being a 100-year-old classic is not in the pantheon of currently popular cocktails. The runner who delivered the ice-cold, artfully presented, soul-satisfying cocktail thought I was likely the first person to ever order a Sidecar at Colita. More should consider it! The Sidecar is the winter sister of the Margarita. It has the exact same kinds of ingredients in the same proportions, except it swaps the tequila and lime for cognac and lemon. It's perfect for Colita and its Oaxaca-inspired menu this winter. I hate to end on a sour note but . . . while Colita's bar and service staffs deserve kudos, whoever plated my beef tartare does not. Oh it was tasty all right and it had the expected Fresno zing, but it looked as though a scoopful had been plunked onto the serving plate with no further ado except for a thin circle smear of sweetened yogurt. One of our favorite restaurants in Minneapolis! Fun menu and great ambiance. There is a nice outside area when the weather is nice and large bar for drinks. Service is always incredible and the staff has great recommendations. We had the naked Dani #3 and it's a great cocktail. Not too sweet and the salt bubbles and presentation are a good touch. For dinner, I highly recommend ordering to share for the table. The elote is always a crowd pleaser and we usually have to order more because it's a favorite. We tried the eggplant tostadas and this was one of the best eggplant dishes I've had. Very fresh and the sauce is a great addition. The zucchini dish was perfectly cooked and the masa topping was a good texture combo for the zucchini. The shrimp tacos were delicious and very fresh. The shrimp was perfectly cooked. I always go for the chicken tinga tostadas. They're very spicy so if you aren't into that I'd say skip, but they're amazing. Oh my goodness, how I have missed out on this place for so long is embarrassing. I've heard so many highly spoken things and we finally made it and we will definitely be back. I'll start with dessert - because I want to make sure you save room for it. the churro desserts are a literal dream. I think about them all the time. All the food came out in less than 5-10 min ticket times and was so flavorful with each plate and each bite. We enjoyed the tuna tostado, the green Chile tacos, the shrimp tacos, and the elote. Every time we tried each one we were mindblown at the goodness! The green Chile tacos were so good my husband ordered another plate for himself. Iconic mart with the rubber ducky, so cool that the foam is their twist on a salted rim. Regular margaritas were great too! Colita is hands down one of my favorite restaurants in Minneapolis! We ordered the Tempura Fried Shrimp Tacos, Corn Elote, Lamb Barbacoa Tacos, and the best churros of my life. Seriously, those churros are unforgettable. The Lamb Barbacoa Tacos were also probably the best tacos I've ever had--rich, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The Corn Elote was another standout, bursting with flavor. While the shrimp tacos were good, they didn't quite hit the same high note as the other dishes, but still worth trying. Drinks-wise, the Mezcal Old Fashioned was easily the best I've had--perfectly smoky and well-balanced. The Naked Dani is a margarita-like fun drink that's a must-try if you're into cocktails with a bit of flair! The ambiance is trendy and fun, but it can get a little loud since the tables are pretty close together. One thing that really stood out was how fast all the food came out--almost too fast for how fresh and delicious it all tasted! It's definitely on the pricier side, and the portions are a bit small, but overall, the quality makes up for it. A really solid spot for a more upscale Mexican experience in Minne. And they have a really convenient parking lot! Service was also pretty attentive even though I came by myself. I lucked out not having resys but at least I could seat myself at the bar for one person, and they do offer the full menu at the bar too. + Horchata: Tasty but sweeter than what I would have liked. This one is a pass for me as the quantity to value ratio wasn't that great ($9 for a wine glass of it with a giant ice cube in it) + Tuna tostada: really tasty and everything meshed well in terms of flavor. Obviously a popular choice for its great ambiance, spunky cocktails, and intriguing menu! Celebrated my birthday with friends but had to wait 20 minutes for a table to open even with a reservation. It worked out for me though because we were still waiting for our whole party to arrive so we had a cocktail at the bar. Drinks are delicious, not too strong. My friend and I shared the Naked Dani #3 but only because we were buzzed after having a Mamakuna at the bar! The service here was over the top AMAZING!!! We put in a couple orders of more food after the first round of plates and it took a bit for them to come out which none of us had noticed except the waitress and she gave us free drinks as a compensation for the time. Can't believe this was my first time and I live less than a mile away. Amazing. Food is not only delicious it is beautiful. Stunningly beautiful. The ingredients are so fresh. Service is top notch and everyone is knowledgeable about the food and drink. My mom and I split the dishes in the pictures and it was plenty of food for the two of us. The ribs come three to a serving and they added a 4th one so we each could have two. Everything we got was so good hard to pick a favorite. If (when!) I go back the watermelon and cucumber salad will for sure be ordered again. Why not 5 stars? Colita truly surpassed my expectations. I was worried that this was another trendy place with ok food and small portions - but boy was a wrong. Be prepared to spend a bit, but I promise it's worth it! This is the perfect place for a GNO. The atmosphere is so tranquil and tropical. I truly couldn't stop looking around this place is so beautiful - I especially love the plant wall behind the bar. My dream would be to rent the space out for an event! Service was also superb and quick, our server was fantastic with lots of great recommendations and even treated us to one of their fermentations for our friend's birthday! We started with the Naked Dani #2 of course. This is a delicious take on a margarita. Beware, the bubbles are in place of the salt on the rim so they're salty! It's great to take a sip of bubbles then the drink. The drink is also large and strong, so in my opinion it's worth the money. My only small tweak I would make to this restaurant it's to rearrange their menu into a more traditional apps/entrees instead of cold, hot and smoke. We had trouble figuring out what to get as starters, and we would've changed our order. Note: We had 5 people, and we were all full after dinner! Most of these items only come with 2, but we upgraded to have 3. I did not try the Tempura Fried Shrimp Tacos since I don't like tempura shrimp. MASA & GUAC: A yummy take on chips and guac. The corn chip was easy to break and split. It was thick and grainy which I loved. The guac was a little smooth for my taste but it was so flavorful and delicious. I dipped a lot in. the salsa and black beans too. TUNA TOSTADA: If you're a sushi fan, definitely try this! It felt like a fusion of sushi and a taco. CHARRED EGGPLANT TOSTADA: Flavorful and sweet - if you love eggplant I would try this! The burrata is the perfect creamy addition to the flavor and crunch of the tortilla. CACIO E PEPE STACKED TOSTADA: I would order this as a starter if you're ordering. Felt like a take on a quesadilla - it was SO cheesy. I loved the dropper of hot sauce on the side. Beware this is super rich so you only need a portion of it. One thing that I truly admired about the drinks were the reusable METAL straws. Two of my drinks had those and I loved it. A friend of mine got a drink that had a wood straw, which was a really off-putting texture. Very happy none of my drinks had that straw! For food, our waiter was very helpful with recommendations, pairings, and perfectly pacing out the food for us. The staff was AMAZING with keeping the table clear of empty glassware and dishes, which really enhanced our experience! We ended up getting the Charred Eggplant Tostadas to start, which were good. It had a nice, subtle kick to it, but I was a little distracted by the texture of it, which kind of ruined it for me. After that, we ordered the Cacio e Pepe Stacked Tostadas, Chicken Tinga Tostadas, Green Chile Pork Tacos, and Corn Elote to share. The Cacio e Pepe Stacked Tostadas were the standout favorite for the group. If you only get one thing here, make it that! The Chicken Tinga Tostadas were fine, but a couple people in our group (myself included) mentioned they kind of had an Oscar Mayer hot dog taste to them, which wasn't great... The Green Chile Pork Tacos were really good and juicy! The Corn Elote wasn't as good as I'd expected. I had high expectations after Macanda. It was just a little too salty and limey for my liking. Finally, we finished the meal with Churros, which were HEAVENLY. They were so much better than a standard churro. Crunchy, but so soft and warm in the middle. If you have friends in from out of town you want to impress, or guests with a lot of dietary restrictions Colita is your golden goose. Visting in the winter feels like stepping into a mini tropical vacation. Every detail is perfect to transport you. Parking is very difficult in the winter with a small lot and snow banks that get in the way of street possibilities. Mandatory to have a reservation. Got to sit at the bar once without a res, but it was too lucky. I think this place is easy to miss because the sign off the main road is petite and vanishes on a drive by if you don't know what you are looking for. My guests are typically late due to finding and parking. Even with gps haha. Just hang out. It can be hard to chat here with the acoustics bouncing all over. But even so I STILL give it 5 stars. The experience is still mint! The food is incredible and the drinks are memorable because drinkware and presentation are suprise and delight. LOVE Colita. I wish I would have known about it sooner. I was very excited to come here, I have been hearing and reading great things about this place. We met with some friends here, their first time here too. When you walk in, the space is very inviting. Lots of neutrals, amazing green plant wall at the bar. Very cool vibe here. I got the Rosas mocktail, very good ginger and fruity flavor. I would get this again! The serving size of the food works so that you can course out 2-4 plates. We got a couple starters, the eggplant tostadas and the cheese tostadas. Both were amazing! I would get both of these again, very good flavors. For entrees, I got the shrimp tacos and my husband got the Mackerel. Both were so good! The others we were with also loved the food they got! My son had to catch a plane back to LA after a fun holiday here in MN. I looked to Yelp for. Tapas spot and Colita came up. I perused the menu and thought this would be good! Well... I was mistaken... it wasn't good... It was GREAT! Old gas station turned trendy haute Mexican restaurant! You walk up to the building and like fish in a bowl, you see the warm candlelit interior. We were greeted by a very pleasant hostess. We chose to dine at the bar... which is where we met Joe (the bartender extraordinaire). He walked us through the bar menu and dinner menu. This restaurant takes details to a great place.. as evidenced by the imprint on the beverage ice blocks (I had the Colita Old Fashion and "cocktail of the moment"). The old fashion was great! Mezcal could have been even a wee bit more smoky- but WOW... what a great beverage! The description states "Amari"... curious I asked Joe and he said they make their own blend of four(?) Amaro's... hence "Amari". He let us taste the blend... man... that was tasty alone! From the pics I provided you get a small glimpse into the cool aesthetic they are striving and succeed in providing... themes of the space even extend into the bathrooms. Overall cool trendy spot!! So... by now you probably think we went there for a liquid dinner... that's definitely not the case. But if the drinks alone did not tell us we arrived to a great spot, the food elevated the experience! We ordered: Aguachile Seared scallops Lamb barbacoa tacos Each and EVERY dish was A-mazing!! I could eat a bowl of the aguachile!! Seared scallops... cooked to perfection and laid on an amazing carrot puree, topped with a multi-chili pepper salsa that has peanuts in it- mic drop good! Lamb barbacoa tacos were very good- I had no expectation but to try something different and I was NOT disappointed! Definitely a "richer" heartier flavor than the rest of the food we ate. Well, after you read "the rest of the food we ate", you probably saying next, that, well Todd, you only had three plates that you shared... well... the food was too damn good to stop there... we added to the order after finishing the Lamb Tacos and ordered up the Tempura Fried Shrimp Tacos. The tortilla's are AMAZING! Texture and flavor are great and I haven't even mentioned the shrimp, fine shredded cabbage and chili mayo... Admission, I have not been to many fine dining Mexican restaurants... there is only one other I can compare it to and it was perhaps in my top five restaurants of all time, and that is Mirate in Los Angeles. Colita integrates diverse flavors of Mexico with barbecue and smoking techniques from around the world. The low lighting in the atmosphere does gives me cozy and sensual. It did good a little darker as the sun sets making a little dark for my taste. But overall cute space. The green wall was adorable. I must say that the service is amazing. Sarah ( I believe) had some amazing suggestions and helped us plan the table food in order for us to have enought to eat. I enjoyed how they announced what you were eating once the dish was placed onthe table. The restaurant serves tapas style so getting each plate one at a time was super on point. It gave us the opportunity to enjoy each dish. It was the cutest. Lets talk about the food.. We order three of the dishes and elote to share. Because we were a party of three, adding the extra taco or tostada to the plate ensured we all tasted the same thing. First up was the Tuna Tostada. Raw tuna, avocado, seasame, tomato jam, cilantro and celery leaf if what makes of this deliciousness. Table wise we gave it a 7 our of 10. The tuna could have used a little more zest or flavoring. Next was the Tempura Fried Shrimp tacos. Shrimp tacos with jalapeno, cabbage, chili mayo and cilantro. The chili mayo was delicious on this taco, however I expected more tempura fried. The batter wasn't what we expcted and it ended with 6.5 to 7 out of 10. The corn elote was a solid 10 and is not up for debate. After was the Green Chile Pork Tacos. Pork tacos with tomatillo, queso, onion and cilantro. This I would say ranged 7.5 to 8 out of 10 for the juiciness and seasonedness of the meat. It was very savory for sure. Lastly was the Chicken Tinga Tostadas. Adobo, smoked chicken, black bean puree, queso fresco, and pickled jalapeno went blasting across my taste buds. This had to be solid #1 for us all. It was packed with flavor and smokeyness that was delightful. From the cocktail menu... I only had two drink but I would definitely rate the " Xochitl In Love" as one of my favorites at this spot so far. Located in a former gas station, this restaurant has a truly unique (and quite pleasing) aesthetic. While you can clearly see the vestiges of its former use, the elegant lighting, crisp colors, and exquisite use of plants (see: living wall) make it reminiscent of a classy, modern loft apartment. The beverage menu is expertly curated, and there will absolutely be something for everyone in your party. Beer, wine, spirit flights, ferments, and cocktails abound. Not drinking? They have some fascinating non-alcoholic options. I went with the 3leche Aqua De Jamaica, which was quite pleasant: tart, sweet, and spiced, it was a brand-new experience. As they serve their plates tapas style, you get the chance to try lots of things. We started with the beets, which were absolutely phenomenal. The pickled apples and smoked almonds added textural contrast and helped balance the sweetness. The seasonings are decidedly south of the border. These are certainly not the beets you grew up with; they're the beets that went off to find themselves by traveling the world and became the most interesting person in the room. We also had the fried green tomatoes, which were truly out of this world. I loved the tart apple cider vinegar, the creamy ranch, and the crisp batter on the tomatoes. That salad on top is full of unique greens that each offer their own flavor and texture. It is exactly the way that I imagined the lettuce that Rapunzel's mother so craved would taste. Next up was the Cacio e Pepe Stacked Tostadas, a very interesting bit of fusion. Why don't more people bring Italy and Latin America together? It works exceptionally well. The crisp tortillas stood up to the rich layers of cheese without overwhelming their distinct character, and the slight sweetness added a new nuance that went very nicely with the black pepper. Definitely don't pass on the fermented pepper sauce. Our server described it as "Minnesota medium," which is apt. It added a pleasant bit of warmth and acid, both welcome to go with a richer dish. I didn't partake of the ribs or banana Tres leches cake, but they both completely disappeared and received high marks. All in all, a great experience. We loved our server, who was genuinely warm, highly knowledgeable, and very efficient. The whole team worked in concert to make this a great experience. Two things to consider if you're planning a trip (which you absolutely should): 1. The parking lot is quite small, so you may need to park on the street or across the way behind the dentist's office. 2. It's a popular place, and there's not much for soundproofing, so it did get pretty loud. read more

I have been wanting to go to Colita for quite a while now!The dishes have a beautiful presentation, with freshly made corn tortillas. The service was impeccable. However, The menu seems so similar to Young Joni. I was hoping for some delicious sizzling steak fajitas coming here and getting some real Mexican. But this is more of a fusion and a very expensive restaurant. We had some lamb and mushroom tacos. Each taco dish comes with 2 tortillas. We also each had a glass of wine each and shared a dish of scallops. The sauce was super delicious and spicy. The sea-bass was ok. It was not my favorite as it was heavily crusted. We just removed the crust and couldn't taste the usual buttery sea-bass flavor. The total bill was about $200 including tip. Would I come back? Probably not. read more

I went here for dinner with my parents. The restaurant was pretty busy throughout the entire experience. They have a cool interior with live plants on the wall behind the bar. The menu is split up into hot cold and smoke. All the dishes we had were good but not great. They aren't a barbecue restaurant and the ribs were to fall off the bone. Visiting the city for the first time. I tried the tequila flight with the Chicken Liver Memelita. The pickled pears and blackberries really balanced the saltiness of the chicken liver. One of the best meals I had while visiting. The carrot puree with the sea scallops was delicious. read more

A must try dish which is delicious is the Tempura Fried Shrimp Taco. The shrimp was crispy and the sauce had a combination of tangy, sweet, and creamy. Worth a visit just for this. Prior to this place, I had never had a vegetarian taco. Their wild mushroom tacos have introduced and inspired an amazing vegetarian version of our go to Mexican dish. Definitely worth trying. The ambience is amazing and so is the staff's service. We didn't have a reservation and had to camp at the bar, the bartender was friendly and good conversations as we sipped our Margarita and Naked Dani. Worth it! read more

Tonite I took my friend here because it's her first visit to Minneapolis and this is one of my favorite restaurants! It's always so pleasant to be in here... the environment is soothing though can be really loud! The plants behind the bar do as much as they can to soften the sound but they defined more sound absorption! Still tonite, as usual, did not disappoint! We mayyyyyyy have over ordered just a little bit but everything sounded so good it was hard to decide!! In the end we listened to our most amazing waiter, William, and started with the aguachile, second came the Lobster tacos, third was the Corn Elote and Chicken Tinga Tacos and we finished with the Seared Scallops or maybe I should say they finished us! Beautiful restaurant! The plant wall is a stunning backdrop for a delicious meal. A quaint patio space is available too. We ordered drinks, an appetizer and two entrees. Everything came out very timely, hot and fresh. Our server was such a delight! We ordered the watermelon and cucumber salad as an appetizer. Perfect pairing of flavors. My friends and I have been trying to visit this place for a long time and finally got the chance to go recently! The greenery spread around the restaurant is beautiful and adds so much character to the place. Our waiter was attentive and bubbly and made sure to give us the best experience. We ordered a few cocktails, all of which were carefully concocted and tasted amazing. We also ordered the guacamole, tempura fried shrimp tacos, the chicken tinga tostadas, and the green Chile pork tacos. All of them were delicious. Wow wow wow was Colita good! Went to dinner here with a friend who has a lot of food allergies, and they were able to accommodate and then some. We ordered a handful of items: - Masa and guacamole - Roasted sweet potato - Lamb barbacoa tacos - Mushroom tacos - Churro I would 10/10 reorder everything we tried. For drinks, we had the T&T, Colita Old Fashioned, and the La Clandestina. There is a parking lot and street parking available as well as a patio and indoor/outdoor seating. The place feels fancy, I was in casual attire and mentioned something to the server about being undressed and they said that they are one of those restaurants where people come in all forms, dressed up or casual. read more

I've been trying to go to Colita since October and I finally went in May. The photos on Yelp gave me major FOMO and I needed that rubber ducky drink like no one's business. We decided to celebrate our one week wedding anniversary (not that I needed a reason but hey it worked) and we're happy to get a reservation. I highly recommend getting a reservation at night as the restaurant fills up quickly. Now here's a slight issue, when we were seated we were told everything was sharing- tapas family style. We started with shrimp tacos and get two small tacos- my husband did not share lol and even if he did it wouldn't have made a difference. We also got the elote which was spicier than I had wanted. We also got the cacio e pepe and it was the best part of the visit. Between those there items and two drinks we spent almost $80 and left still hungry. I was glad to have tried the drink (the foam is salty lol don't take a big mouthful like I did) but overall we won't be back. If you're looking for a cool experience and don't mind spending the money this is for you. read more

Solid 4 stars - food was 5/5, but everything else was more 3.5-4/5 (slow service, inconvenient parking, very small tables, and high prices). Super trendy Oaxacan restaurant, dishes served tapas style and pretty pricey. Parking is very limited right at the restaurant but there's another small lot across the street. We ended up getting lucky and got in without a reservation, but would highly recommend making one if you can. I don't know if they were understaffed, but we would go 30min between sightings of our server. This made ordering food a little tricky because the tables were small and so you're limited to ordering 2-3 dishes at a time. If you're looking for a drawn out, European-esque style eating, this would be great! But we sat outside and it started to get cold so I was hoping the service would have been a little faster. That being said, after we actually placed our order the food came out relatively quickly. We tried a bunch of plates and they were all amazing. I started to list my favorites and realized it was basically every dish we tried. Loved the lamb tacos, beef tartare, the refried bean tlayuda, the cacio e pepe tostada, and the cucumber and watermelon salad. The dishes aren't overly small but also not huge. There was enough food (splitting 7 dishes between a few people) that I couldn't fit dessert. But also put us back almost $300 (including several drinks). Will definitely go back and just make sure I have better expectations in terms of flow. read more
