My husband and I were in town on vacation and had the opportunity to try this lovely shop. There's plenty of options to drink or eat and all are crafted with quality and care in mind. And when you're finished, you can look around at the other goods they have to offer like hand made mugs, organic balms, and cute trinkets. this spot was super hyped up before I got here, but I don't LOVE it. the prices average on the higher side but they do factor in tax so its nice to know exactly how much you're paying when browsing the menu. the mint cold brew latte was ok. I think other places can make better. I'm not a fan of floral favors either so the other items didn't interest me. my friend got a latte and enjoyed it. parking is awful. it's all side streets only but there's a lot of businesses around so very few open spots. the cafe itself is one of the bigger ones I've seen but for the entirety of the 3 hours I was working there, tables were always full, with people going in and out. they do have free wifi and a clean bathroom but it's located on the patio (and there's only one) so it was terrible standing in the rain waiting to use it. read more

I've been here a couple times and everything I have tried is delicious. Whenever I go they have had pretty amazing seasonal drinks. Earlier this year I tried their blueberry mint, which was delicious--and most recently I tried the orange cardamom. The space itself is very inviting; they have a shop with a bunch of cute goods ranging from jewelry to candles to cookbooks. There is also soooo much seating which is great because it's a popular spot! That being said they only have a few designated parking spots near the entrance. Other than that, you gotta deal with North Park street parking haha. Either way, I do think it's worth the trip. Good coffee and great snacks. I gotta visit their other locations as well! read more

Everything was great! We live near the Bay Area in Central, California, and Love traveling. We found communal on one of our trips to San Diego and now make that our regular coffee spot when we're in town. The ambience is great. The fresh flowers are a beautiful touch. Everything we've eaten there has tickled the taste buds and the coffee is great. Knowing that there is a line to get your coffee can be a turn off for some, but I see that as an experience worth waiting for. This is not Starbucks and I appreciate the staff working as hard as they did and also acknowledging us who are in line that they will be right with us. This is such a cute and aesthetic coffee place. I was surprised by how large the seating area is and I can see it being a great place to work, study, or catch up with friends. Alongside selling coffee and pastries, they also sell flowers and have a small boutique area where they sell various items such a clothing, jewelry, nail polish, etc. In terms of coffee, they had a large variety of different options and the lattes specifically sounded really good. I'm a black coffee drinker so I ended up getting the Americano which I enjoyed. The coffee itself was smooth and not overly bitter. I would also say that the prices here are fair. Although I didn't get any of the pastries, they looked delicious as well. My only complaint with this place is that I felt like service was pretty slow. It took about 20 minutes to get a black coffee which I feel like is on the longer end so this isn't the best place to just a grab a coffee and go if that's what you're hoping for. Despite this, I would say overall service is good and the employees are warm and friendly. There is only street parking here which can be a bit tough, so that is something to keep in mind when visiting. read more

I was suckered into this place by Yelp, but hey, I love my coffee and plants as a millennial. Don't be alarmed by the prices of everything in here, due to its location and the fact it's a local business. For the coffee, we got a lemon almond latte and a lavender honey latte with soy milk. I didn't really taste any lemon in mine (next time I'll ask for more lemon), so it straight up just tasted like a super basic almond latte. I'm not sure if they use fresh lemon, but at least for me, this particular latte was misleading. The lavender honey latte was good though! We shared the toast flight that consisted of three flavors: guava, communal (their signature one), and the typical avocado toast with (hardboiled) egg. My favorite one was the guava jam toast because of the sweetness. I'd definitely get a cold brew or just coffee with no added stuff to balance out the guava taste. Oh my.. if every coffee shop could be like communal. This place is THE spot, no wonder it has SO many reviews raving about it!! We stopped by communal this morning and were not disappointed. My husband just got a simple cold brew which he (the coffee snob) LOVED it. You can tell that the coffee is not only from a clean source but is also brewed to perfection and not just sitting inside a machine for days on end. Something I love about this coffee shop is how they do a little bit of everything. They have a ton of local foods that are for sale, anything from handcrafted mugs, to baby clothes and toys, to cards, jewelry, the list literally goes on. They have an entire section for making florals and tons of dried florals as well which was stunning!! Off to the far side were seats for working on your computer or hanging with your friends, and around back was wide open space to sit and hang out in the beautiful San Diego weather. It was such a treat to find this coffee shop right near where we were staying. It was larger than I was expecting but had such a relaxed, warm, and welcoming atmosphere. This is the type of coffee house I'd want to meet up with friends to just relax and catch up. A lot of tables as well as barstools in front of the coffee bar. It was very peaceful to sit here, enjoy the morning coffee, and have breakfast. The coffee here was phenomenal - great chai tea lattes, but the sweet mint cold brew took center stage. It was both delicious and unique - we've never had anything near like it before, and the spring of mint on top just really brought it home. The toast flight made for one of the BEST breakfasts. My husband and I shared it, and they really hit different flavors with them. The guava toast was a bit on the sweeter side and was my husbands favorite while I loved the communal avocado, which was on the more savory side. Major vibes at Communal Coffee. It reminded me of a couple spots here in Grand Rapids - Commune and Sparrows at Kingma's. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with lots of pastel and earth tones towards the front and a bit of a moodier vibe in the back where we sat. When we arrived at 9 am on a Friday, there were plenty of open tables. By 10:30 when we left, the whole place was full with a line out the door. Definitely a popular spot! I ordered the latte flight, because I love a good flight and no one is doing them here in GR. It came with two choices of three different lattes and a shot of sparkling water. So fun! I liked the lavender honey best but the rose vanilla was also tasty. Nate got the sweet mint cold brew, which is something we make at home, and we shared the eggplant veggie bagel. We sat down, plugged in our laptops, and got to work on the speedy wifi. Our bagel was brought to our table and it was light and delicious. A perfect healthier option for breakfast after a few days of indulgence. It was fun checking out all the items for sale at Communal Coffee, including lots of fresh flowers, a wall of cards (my favorite), home goods, books, jewelry, and lots of other great gifts. I could not find a restroom but didn't need one urgently so we just packed up and made room for more customers. I loved this spot! read more

Pros: -Decent parking. Parking may seem intimidating in the area, but I've always found a spot a short walk down the residential street. -Beautiful aesthetic Cons: -Mediocre food. I paid $14 for a salted maple sausage sandwich off the seasonal menu--I was told by the cashier it was a popular choice, so I was optimistic about it. The portion size was small for $14 (it was the size of a regular English muffin and was fairly flat in height--not stuffed) and it did not taste like it was worth $14-the flavor didn't redeem it, unfortunately. A $7 breakfast sandwich at Starbucks would have been more flavorful and satisfying. Simply overpriced--the marketing team worked hard to write the description of this sandwich and make it sound better than it looked and tasted. Far overpriced and not worth it--please save your money. -Mediocre drink. I ordered the $7 Strawberry Crème Matcha Latte and it was nothing to write home about. Not the best matcha and also not the worst. -Inconvenient food and drink delivery system for "for here" orders. I ordered my items "for here," got a number, and went to sit at my table near the back. My food was delivered without my drink and my number was taken. I flagged down a waiter and asked how my drink would be brought to me if my number was taken, and the waiter said drinks needed to be picked up separately at the counter when my name was called. How inconvenient. Why not just deliver my food and drink to my table at the same time, so I don't have to get up again and leave my food or items unattended (if I can't carry by food, bag, jacket, etc. all with me back to the counter again), or risk losing the table that I found? Delivering customers food to their table is a convenience for the customer, so it doesn't make sense to offer that convenience to half the items on a tab but not the other half--that nullifies the convenience factor for the customer. A friend that was with me received half her order (a drink) as well and had to go to the counter to get the croissant that she ordered but didn't receive. Fortunately, she was able to pick up my drink from the counter as well, while I stayed and watched her drink and the secured the table that we settled in to. If you're not going to deliver the entire order to the table, don't bother having table delivery--just be like Starbucks and have people pickup the entire order at the counter. Be like a sit down restaurant and bring both drinks and food to the table or be a coffee shop and have customers pickup up everything at the counter--having customers sit down only to get up and sit down again is inconvenient and an inefficient process for the customer. I wouldn't recommend this coffee shop to others because the food I ordered was overpriced and mediocre, and their table delivery system didn't take into account the customer experience and disrupted the flow of my time with my friend by having us get up and deal with undelivered items--not a good way to start the experience at an establishment. However, the front staff were nice and the guys who delivered our food from the back and cleaned up our table were nice. I hope management can come up with a workflow that prioritizes the customer's experience. read more

I don't know what to think anymore about Communal. I've had so many great Latte's here and their coffee drinks for the most part are consistently very tasty. I think they use Spyglass for their beans and I love the smoothness and low acidity. I have spoken with a number of friendly helpful employees. The issue I've had are condescending, smug, individuals who make the visit with regret. Today was one of those days.....again. I had ordered a Latte, then after paying I immediately thought, "no, maybe a Cortado would be better" I ordered one on my last visit. The Barrista asked "Did you have a question?" I said " Yes, I wanted to change my order to a Cortado" The person working at the register interjected "You have to get back in line and make any changes here (at the register"...no problem. I got back in line behind an employee to was there on their own time. After they ordered and visited with the employee at the register. She asked what I wanted . I said I would like to change my Latte order for a Cortado with an add shot (same price as the Latte) after looking over at the person making the espresso shots she said "Your drink is already being made...did you want to make another order?" They house make the blueberry syrup and it is so flavorful!! Didn't really taste the mint but it's ok. I got it iced and it was so refreshing on a hot day! Accidents with hair happen, and they were very friendly and remade my drink, but to also then just leave the avocado stem in the bagel is extremely careless at best. Parts of the avocado were also rotten and tasted weird, and was mushy and black. The bagel as a whole was also way too salty. Communal is so aesthetic and cute, and has been around in San Diego for so long, but the drinks are unfortunately just so bland and overpriced. The flavoring in their lattes doesn't really come through (whether it's the rose vanilla or the earl grey blueberry, or the honey lavender), and their coffee is dilute in general. I really wanted to love this place because the interior is so pretty, but it's hard to justify buying consistently mediocre coffee just for the ambiance. read more

Prior to visiting, I heard about Communal Coffee from friends and they've always had positive things to say about this spot. Seeing all the aesthetic photos of the business, it was hard not to want to come to visit myself! - PARKING - They have a VERY limited side lot with 30 minute parking spots, otherwise you'll have to opt for street parking which gets full very quickly. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - I was honestly surprised at the size of Communal Coffee! The outdoor patio area has umbrellas and shading for sunny days, and once you go in there are several tables scattered across the shop. They have bar seating and also a more private room where people looked deep in their work, if you needed a quieter space. They also have several vendor items ranging from jewelry, clothing, books, flower bouquets and more! Service was quick and friendly. If you find a table outside or deeper in, I would stick around to grab your drinks as it's hard to hear names being called out during busier hours. - DRINK - Sweet Mint Cold Brew ($6.00): I'm a huge fan of most coffee concoctions that have mint in them, and seeing as this already had oat milk included, it was right up my alley. Beautifully presented with the sprig of mint, but taste-wise it was disappointing. It felt diluted and left me wanting more flavor. I've definitely had better mint coffees at other establishments. Latte Flight ($8.50): My friend ordered this and actually asked if she could add on another flavor as she wanted to try all three and they happily obliged! However it was hard for her to carry as they didn't give her anything to transport the glasses to the table, so she had to go back. Similar to the Sweet Mint Cold Brew, the flavors were very light in these. You could tell which flavor was which, but it still left me wishing they were more prominent. - OVERALL - Maybe we ordered the wrong drinks, or maybe they were off in their drink making this day. I do think the environment and aesthetic decor made my experience better, but I'm not sure if I'd come back just for the vibe. I hope if I return, the next drink will be more satisfying. I would also be open to trying a food item as they have a wider selection than most coffee shops! read more
