However, after a very long wait (well over an hour) we still were not served our main courses. I lodged a complaint and the food came out five minutes later, but it was either luke-warm or nearly cold. Moreover, the majority of the dishes were over-salted. Just enjoyed dinner at communion tonight and everything was a 10/10. Our server sydny was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable about every aspect of the menu. We started with a glass of wine and the 'Golden Tempo' cocktail which was well balanced, delicious, and pretty to look at! The Brioche bread was to die for and the 8oz filet was cooked to perfection and was the perfect size to share among appetizers. The ambience was amazing and had a great view of the ocean and city from all spots in the restaurant. I had been looking forward to dining at Communion for several weeks. After reading so many glowing online reviews, I was genuinely excited to experience the food for myself. The venue is beautiful--the views of the city are fantastic, and the service was attentive and friendly. Unfortunately, the food left a lot to be desired. Our group followed the server's recommendation to order several dishes for sharing. While portion sizes were fair, the flavors and execution were disappointingly average. Below are my ratings for each item (on a 1-5 scale, with 2.5 being average--meaning the dish reflects what I could reasonably make myself at home). Dinner rolls and butter -- 2/5 The rolls seemed prepackaged and weren't served warm. The chive butter was tasty, but overall, the rolls reminded me of a ready-to-eat package from Ralph's. Kale salad -- 2/5 Most of the kale leaves still had long stems, and the salad was lightly dressed with vinaigrette and tiny red pepper slices. It tasted almost identical to a grocery store prepackaged salad. Truffle pasta -- 5/5 Outstanding. Generous with the truffle and served piping hot--the only truly hot dish of the night. I loved it. Stuffed eggplant entrée -- 3/5 Creative and flavorful. A solid dish with good balance and presentation. Lamb lollipops - 4/5 Tasty. I ordered medium well and it came out very medium. It was warm not hot. There was a small amount of sauce and I wish I asked for an extra side Brussels sprouts -- 2/5 These felt like something I'd make on a weeknight--simply tossed in oil, charred, and served with bits of lard. They arrived warm, not hot. A creamy base, sprinkle of cheese, or toasted breadcrumbs could have elevated the dish. Baked Brie We ordered it, but unfortunately, they had run out. Final thoughts: Go for the ambiance--it's lovely. Stay for the views and atmosphere. But if you're seeking memorable food, you might want to eat elsewhere. read more

It's located on top of a building which offers great views of the San Diego coast facing west and on the east side you have the hills in the distance. The venue is festive and friendly. I was really hoping we would have a great experience and this would be my new favorite rooftop restaurant in San Diego.Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing visit last Friday. It was my dad's 75th birthday and we had a nice table with a gorgeous view, but customer service was off, to say the least. We ordered two appetizers and one of them, which was the Indian style potatoes came out with a wad of long black hair on it. Not one piece, but multiple pieces sprinkled in and around the food, which was gross. When I pointed it out to the waitress, she quietly took the plate away, but didn't apologize or even offer to replace it. She just proceeded to ask what we wanted for our main entrées. I told her we were in the middle of drinks and appetizers, and we would like to have the appetizers that we intended to have but without the hair. She was super weird about it & took a while to get back to us. At that point, we decided we were over the appetizers so we ordered our entrées. I ordered the lobster risotto, which was a very small portion for a $60 plate. There was barely any lobster in it. Nobody at my table was particularly happy with their dinner, but we were all trying to forget about it and focus on my dad's birthday & have a good time. At the very end, the waitress came out with the bill and there was an extra $50 charge on there. My husband asked her why it was on there, and she initially denied it was incorrect and proceeded to tell us that we were reading it wrong. Finally, it became apparent that the drinks from the table next to us were charged to our bill so she took it off, but was rude about it as if it was our fault. Not only did they charge us extra, but didn't compensate us for that gross hair incident. The waitress was cold and unapologetic, and I just found that she really made the whole experience kind of crappy. For a $300 plus dinner it was just a low brow experience. Disappointing for a beautiful place like this. In retrospect, I should've spoken to the manager, but it was my dad's birthday and I didn't want to focus too much on the disappointments... Review UPDATE: After I posted this review, I did get contacted by management of the restaurant and I have to say they handled it very well. They took full accountability, were very kind and went out of their way to take ownership of the situation. Mistakes happen and it's possible this is just a one off so I did wanna share this because it's important to be fair to businesses when they make an effort to do the right thing. We will try this restaurant again in the future optimistically & hope for a better experience! read more

This entire building is gorgeous!! Whether you're there for their cafe or in the waiting area for the bar or restaurant, it's gorgeous. We grabbed two cocktails from the cafe while we waited be cause we had no reservations, we waited for like 20 min and got in. The drinks and food at the restaurant were spectacular!! We came to meet friends who were already seated at the bar while waiting for our table. The hostess encouraged us to go join them, but when we got there, there weren't enough seats, so we stood behind them as we waited for service. We stood there for quite some time without any acknowledgment. When the female bartender finally approached, instead of asking how she could help, she rudely told our friends to close out their tab, refused to let us order drinks to take to our table, and reminded us there was "no standing room" -even though no one was behind us. Her tone was dismissive and unprofessional-not what you'd expect from a restaurant at this price point. Once seated, the service didn't improve much. It was slow and impersonal, and the food was hit or miss. We started with the crusted watermelon salad, steak tartare, pork belly, and patatas bravas-the tartare was the only standout. For entrees, we had the short rib, shrimp pasta, lobster risotto, and lamb lollipops. The short rib was flavorful but salty, the pasta was drowning in sauce and way overcooked, the risotto was just okay, and the lamb was a bit tough. Cocktails were good, but overall, the experience didn't justify the price. This feels like a place that relies heavily on its view and atmosphere to draw people in rather than its food or service to bring them back. Hard to say if I'd return. read more

What a great place for brunch! Parking can be a challenge, but we lucked out with a space right in front today. Check in downstairs and wait for your table in a cute, shady courtyard. They are dropping the ball here by not offering you a drink while you wait, but maybe I'm just impatient. When the table's ready, you take an elevator up to the dining room. The view and decor are really pretty. The view felt similar to Mister A's. We started with Eliza Woodman's famous mai tai. It's reminiscent of a Hawaiian or tropical mai tai. Sweet, fruity, and goes down easy. Generous mint and orchid flower garnish. I was surprised to see it served in a tall pilsner glass, but I'm not complaining it was tall. It was a great drink. For food, we had the french toast and crispy polenta dish. What a killer combo to share. Sweet and savory and both delicious. The french toast has condensed milk and some rhubarb compote on top. The polenta dish was complete with prosciutto and tomatoes. Fantastic. I've heard great things about their happy hour as well. Definitely a place I want to return and explore more of. read more

Stunning views; beautiful, classy, but light and fun ambiance. I went for a business dinner, and loved it so much I came back the next night for my family birthday dinner! So many great chefs and foodie folks involved: Owner Jacquee Renna (Pacifica), executive chef Mike Moritz (Mille Fleurs, Mister A's) and executive pastry chef Aly Lyng (George's at the Cove) But best of all, the food and drinks were unique and delicious. The first night, tried 3 dishes: (1) burrata and stone fruit wi/prosciutto which was wonderful; then (2) yellowfin poke - excellent, but the highlight of the night was (3) the pasta with shrimp, mussels and sea bass (they were out of clams). OMG; the seafood was incredible, pasta was so light and tender, and sauce was out of this world. For my birthday, we ordered 6 items to share: (1) focaccia - delicious; (2 ) poke again; (3) triple cream Brie wrapped in Philo, surrounded by berries and stone fruit, which was incredible; (4) Seafood pasta again, and this time it had clams and mussels - everyone loved iit; and (5) chicken - the sauce was out of this world. For dessert, had (6) the cheesecake with fabulous caramel sauce and then a complementary birthday Godino. The view on the Terrace was spectacular. The cocktails and wine were lovely too. I had the bubbly drink the first night, and the strawberry rhubarb on the second night. Had a glass of Chablis both nights - superb. My daughter had a mocktail which she said was very good as well. I came for happy hour, and was very impressed by the view/ambiance. Super cute spot! The drinks and food were good as well. We got the chicken skewers, artichokes, pasta salad and rolls. The bread rolls were the stand out- so yummy!! The only thing I wasn't wowed by was the pasta salads- it needed mozzarella or more sauce, it was pretty bland. The worst part I hate to say was the service. The bartender clearly did not like us at all and it was so awkward. Any time I wanted to order food or drinks I could tell she was avoiding my eye contact or when I'd try to say something to her she'd ignore me. I said thank you every time she'd bring my drinks/food so I'm not sure why she clearly did not want to serve us. She asked every person at the bar for last call for happy hour except us. I'm not one to make a big deal over having a friendly server, we don't need to have a whole conversation, but this was just really uncomfortable. read more

It pains me to have to post this review, but after a lack of response for several weeks from the restaurant owners after giving them a chance to privately address my concerns, I'm posting my full review here. My family was visiting from out of town and so I thought it would be nice to impress them with a place with a nice view and good food. We had dinner on July 6th (a Sunday evening) here. There are some serious issues with the food which other reviewers have already mentioned that need to be addressed quickly. First of all, the space is gorgeous, the decor and the ambiance are all top notch. We had reservations (which require up front deposit btw) and were seated almost immediately upon arrival and had a gorgeous view of downtown and beyond. The service was AMAZING and we were very happy with Daniel! He was very attentive to our needs and very friendly and on top of all the important details. The drinks were great and we commend the bartender on excellent mixology. I enjoyed a unique smoked mezcal drink and my brother enjoyed the mule, top notch! The appetizers were good, although the pork belly was a tad on the overcooked side but very flavorful. The barata was excellent. Unfortunately the food really missed the mark for us. While we can appreciate the creative multi cultural flair of the menu, there was just something off. The fresh catch of the day was overcooked/tough. The lack of including something like rice with the fish is a huge miss in my opinion. The lamb lollipops were cold and very tough to chew. The salad presented in the dish left a lot to be desired. The lobster risotto was over cooked and tough. The risotto had a crunch to it. When you are spending this much for dinner (it came to almost $500 with tip for 4 people with cocktails and apps), you expect a lot better quality Overall, I would recommend this place for cocktails and apps but not for meals. The unique flair of the menu does not appeal to the masses, and the quality of the food just isn't there. read more

I came here for to celebrate my friend's birthday and all I have to say is we were impressed! Every dish we had was a solid 10/10. Even the dessert that I keep thinking about days later, was the best dessert I've had. We like to do family style when we order and we ordered the chaat masala potatoes, sage hill tomato and strawberry salad, dolmeh eggplant, & steak frites. Everything we ordered was truly amazing. I would say my top favorites were the chaat masala potatoes and the steak frites. In addition to our main dishes, The three of us ordered the Aurora Borealis mocktail that was delicious! For dessert we had the sticky apple cake and I believe the complimentary birthday dessert was the ritual. Both were flavorful and different than any dessert I've had, but, if you love apple pie...you HAVE to get the sticky apple cake. I honestly asked for a dessert refill jokingly, but would have taken it in a heartbeat if that was possible. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. We had to move back our reservation by an hour since our party was running late and they were so kind to make the changes for us. They also called to mention concerns of the cold outside since it was starting to get windy and rainy, but they have heaters and rolling blinds that kept us wam and dry. Communion definitely has a fun and unique vibe--from the quirky experience of getting into the hotel to riding up to the top floor, it's a journey worth sharing. The atmosphere is stylish yet laid-back, and the ocean view adds an unforgettable backdrop, especially at sunset (highly recommend timing your visit then!). We ordered several plates to share, and each one was thoughtfully crafted and full of flavor. You can really tell the team puts care into the food. My two girlfriends and I came here on a Friday with a 4pm table reservation. We heard this is the trendy new place and decided to try it. I arrived first a few mins before 4pm. And several other ladies arrived for a birthday party as well. We waited for the hostess to check us in and then we filed into the elevator that took us to the rooftop deck. The vibe was cool, trendy, chill and a neutral sleek that could change the mood of the bar at night with the flick of any color lighting. The bar looked nice and had ample seating. One thing to note is the bar chairs had no leeway in between. The arms on each of the chairs touched the adjacent chair so if you want to get in/out of your seat you would have to back out of them. Anyway, I got seated at a corner table up against the glass with a great view of the area around Mission Hills, Hillcrest and downtown where you can see the planes take off across the water. My friends arrived shortly afterwards. We ordered based on the server's recommendations on what has been popular with patrons. Our server Rebecca was super friendly and helpful in going through the menu items with us. The Local Yellowfin Tuna was delicious with the taro chips. Then we got the Pork Belly which was not our favorite. The pork belly was a bit overcooked like jerky and the sauce tasted a little fishy to me, which was probably not what was intended. The Crusted Watermelon came next which we ordered because it sounded interesting. When it arrived it looked like meat....seared ahi or rare slices of steak. I can't say it was bad but you had no idea what to expect on taste. It was basically dehydrated watermelon slices lathered in spices...very vegan friendly :0). And lastly we got the truffle pasta which was good but super rich and filling. Our time at the table was up so we were asked to move to bar seats because the next reservation was going to take our table. My girlfriends shared the Cherry Frangipane Tart at the bar which they thought was good. Hands down....the BEST restaurant I have ever been to. EVER. We tried many different items on the menu and it is hard to decide which was best because they were all amazing! Every item on the menu is very unique and incorporates a mix of ingredients that keeps it all well balanced. I can say the same for the specialty cocktails. This is definitely my new favorite restaurant and I can't wait to go back! It's hard to believe this has only been open for 5 weeks, as it seems they have perfected the whole menu. You can't go wrong with the Baked Triple Cream, Spanish Octopus, Lamb Lollipops, Prime Porterhouse, Coconut Milk SeaBass, and peas and artichokes just to name a few. There were at least 3 separate menus (pre fixe option, special drinks, beer and cocktails, regular menu. Kind of confusing). And I found it odd that we were required to order everything at once. In other words we couldn't put an order in for appetizers with our drinks while we decided on our main entrees. She let us have some mediocre foccaia bread and a little bit of butter while we planned out our entire meal though. The food was underwhelming. Nothing mind blowing. Brussels sprouts and potato's bravas were fine. I ordered the sea bass because I don't eat a ton of red meat which dominated the options. I couldn't finish the sea bass. Extremely lacking in flavor. I should've asked for salt. It was in a watered down broth. The overcooked tomatoes had the most flavor. It was like a bland fish soup. Do not recommend. I was very excited to try this new restaurant. My mom flew from Puerto Rico for her birthday today, on New Year's Eve. I specifically reserved this place for that reason and made a couple of simple special requests weeks in advance. First, I never received a response. I sent three emails, two messages via Instagram, and called three times. On the third call, I had to insist on speaking with the manager. Once again, I anxiously explained my special requests, but the manager didn't seem to care. Despite the lack of communication, we gave them the benefit of the doubt and hoped they would be more attentive in person. We arrived at our reservation time, but our table was not ready. Guess how long we waited? One hour! When we finally sat down, the food was terrible--overly salty and poorly prepared. Then, when it was time for dessert, they informed us that we needed to move inside to the bar because it was close to 11 PM, and they aren't allowed to be outside past 11 due to being in a residential area... this wouldn't have happened had we been sat at the time we made our reservation. Frustrated, we asked for our desserts to-go. We waited another 20 minutes while sitting at the bar, surrounded by staff cleaning up and completely disregarding our presence and visible frustration. When the bill arrived, they did not apply our $300 reservation deposit as promised. We brought this up with the shift manager, who gave us a weak excuse, claiming their policy had changed effective today. Are you serious? After more back-and-forth, she finally applied the $300 deposit to our $1,000 bill--but only because we insisted. By this point, it was already 11:30 PM, and we were trying to leave to celebrate New Year's Eve and my mom's birthday. As we settled the bill, the server approached us and said, "I'm so sorry. If my mom came from the Philippines, I'd be upset too." Even he acknowledged how terrible the service had been. What an incredibly disappointing experience. They failed to honor our requests, showed no care for our special occasion, and displayed poor customer service from start to finish. We will never return to this restaurant, nor will we recommend it to anyone. What a shame. Your lack of empathy and poor customer service, speaks volumes about the future of this restaurant. Wow wow wow, I almost didn't want to write this review to keep a bit of a secret spot. Yet many already know so you should as well. I went on a Monday, hands down a top choice for happy hour. I showed up at 4pm, smart choice. Cocktails premium and small plates on the happy hour menu creative and quite tasty. The decor, design, quality of service and THE VIEW, amazing. If you want to impress someone or treat yourself like we all deserve, try it out, you will be impressed as well. I had never heard of this spot...I was in the area and did a quick search for a bar that served cocktails. Searching for it made me a bit skeptical. It's definitely worth the search, though. You enter and immediately go up the elevator to the restaurant/bar. There was a hostess both at the bottom of the elevator and the top. We arrived around 4:45pm and sat at the bar. There was already a good crowd in there, but as the evening wore on, it became a hot spot! The ambiance and lighting is very cool, but the view is extraordinary! The bartender was very attentive, and the drinks excellent. We had several drinks and had what I would say were the best fried artichokes I've ever had. I definitely want to go back for dinner or brunch. I can imagine that in the summer this place would be even more popular...around the holidays it felt cozy and warm, even with the windows open. I really wanted to love this place. It's a beautiful restaurant with an amazing view, excellent service, and a solid wine selection. Unfortunately, the food was extremely disappointing. We started with the Brussels sprouts and potatoes -- neither dish was anything special, and the potatoes were far from crispy. For our main courses, we ordered the lamb chops and the eggplant dish. The lamb chops came as three pieces laid on top of some lettuce, with no sides or vegetables, and about half of the meat was pure fat and inedible. As for the eggplant, it was completely undercooked -- practically raw. The kitchen offered to redo it, but the second attempt came out just as undercooked as the first. For the high prices, I expected much better. Despite the great ambiance and attentive staff, the food quality simply doesn't measure up. Sadly, I won't be returning. read more

Food: The food portions are just way too small. You look at the menu prices and think "it aint cheap but it's not too to bad", then you see your entree size and you feel like you just got robbed. Besides that, the food is cooked well, well seasoned, and is quite creative when it comes to plating. However, I felt a few of the dishes were a bit too creative and lacked cohesiveness of flavors (hamachi crudo, eggplant) We had: focaccia, hamachi crudo, and the octopus for apps. Like the kind of people who yell as their normal inside voice. The management opened up the patio blinds a bit more which helped a bit letting their sound disperse. These places don't typically turn a profit in the first year, sometimes even two" but it seems this place wants to nickle and dime anyway they can while still being "upscale" . To their credit, they did put a full service restaurant on the top of an apartment building. So, really hard to blame them for the cons. Final thoughts: You've got to try it at least once and be sure to ask for the patio for the best views. If you're prone to being too cold, even with the heaters, I'd suggest inside but they are very limited in tables, i only saw two tops inside and bar seating. Maybe if they could just give a bit more bread since you have to pay for it (I make focaccia at home for my family and it costs pennies to make) and increased portion sizes for those of us not on ozempic. read more
