This place was very cute as you walk through the downstairs area to get to the elevators. When you walk in there is a bar in the middle of the room but we got seated in the outdoor rooftop bar. The view was amazing. You could see the water as well as part of downtown and it was so nice to just sit there with the glass railings. As for the food, we ordered the tartar appetizer, mushroom omelette, and katsu. Tartar(4/5): the flavor was really good and the crisp cracker was definitely different. However the cracker got really hard after awhile. I'd try it again but definitely not something I craved. Mushroom omelette(2.5/5): they were definitely not your normal mushrooms in an omelette. I wouldn't eat this again but the potatoes were small and crispy, my fave type of breakfast potatoes. Katsu(2/5): the look of it was better than the taste. They cooked the egg to perfection so that was good. However the katsu was dry. They had a good sauce and flavor to the katsu but it did not make up for the dry meat. The rice was also undercooked and hard. I couldn't even eat it. Id give this place 3.5 stars for the feel and the customer service (which was spectacular) increased the rating. But If I had to give the food a rating, I'd rate it a 2/5. We also got coffee which tasted watered down. This was possibly the worst meal of my life. I do not understand how it has 4 stars on Yelp. Every single thing we had was under-flavored. When we asked for chili oil, even that had no flavor. We had to douse everything in salt and pepper. We legitimately left sad because we had such high hopes since the menu looked great and the restaurant itself is beautiful. Bread rolls: When these came out cold we immediately felt nervous about all the food we ordered. Bread should be the easiest thing to get right, but nope. Genuinely believe these are probably some mass produced bread rolls that they serve because of the way it came out. I think store bought rolls would even be better than these. Triple Brie: This was fine but executed poorly. I also think it was fine because of how bad everything else was, so it was one of the least bad items. Somehow all the fruit on the plate was not sweet. Barely any of the sauce/jam. Hamachi Crudo: This was fine, but also really hard to screw up. They would have had to actively try to mess up crudo so not surprised this turned out to be the best thing that came out. Brussels Sprouts: Burnt. No seasoning. Awful. Ate out of pure hatred. Pasta: Zero flavor. Lamb Lollipop: Mediocre. Didn't really taste like anything. Seabass: This was what I was most excited for, and again, bland. Outside of the food, the service was also incredibly slow. The server also dropped my steak knife on my hand and it stabbed me. Thankfully I didn't bleed but it definitely hurt. I've been for both brunch and dinner and while i recommend the dinner menu over the brunch menu both are tasty. Service is great and the bar tenders are quite talented. Communion is tucked away on a little rooftop place off Goldfinch, where this location has been a few things...but I think this place is here to stay. Went here with a few friends and had a few cocktails, a martini dry and an espresso martini. I cannot remember the name of the dessert but it was almost like a cocoa filled tiramisu martini with a yummy cookie! It was a spontaneous stop after dinner in the area. Let me be clear: I will gladly pay 5% more to order food and drink but it is not my responsibility as your patron to pay your server's and staff's wages. THAT'S YOURS, if you own a restaurant. If you can't take full responsibility for doing that, you need not own a restaurant. I will no longer be subsidizing your cost of doing business. It's your responsibility to pay livable wages. As a result, I will be having conversations with on-duty managers about this issue and requesting that surcharges be removed. There's no service or product associated with the surcharges. Bamboozled... but with a view... On a whim, last night we went to Communion in search if a dirty martini with blue cheese olives. We sat at the bar, views were lovely. The drinks were Hendricks dirty martinis and met expectation. We ended up staying for dinner. Ordered apps: Octopus Risotto (good) Jerusalem Artichoke (awful) Ordered entrees: Steak Frittes (very average) Halibut in Coconut broth (beyond bland) So the service, was OK, (pretty sure the bartender was new) kitchen was very slow to get out entrees. The bamboozle is this... the steak frittes and the halibut were both upwards of $50. The quality and value in the entrees provided was not there. Basically paid rediculous pricing for wildly average, honestly, diner food. Lastly, I'm not exactly sure how their liquor pricing works as they didnt have a cocktail menu, but just had liquors that stated hendricks gin was $17, but each of our non-vermouth dirty martinis came out to $25 each. In closing... go for the view, have a drink. Eat elsewhere if you care about flavor and getting a quality meal for a premium price. read more

Breathtaking views the moment the elevator doors open then take you into an elevated space with a delicate blend of traditional gothic elements with contemporary materials and lighting. I decided to check out Communion for my birthday after a few friends recommended the place and, honestly, it exceeded my expectations. Our party of 2 had a fantastic view of downtown San Diego from our table inside near the bar. We ordered a few drinks and then came in about 10 minutes, which was ok since the bar was slightly busy. The drinks had a cute presentation and were tasty, yet strong. I got the Angels Redemption and Divine Garden. For appetizers, we got the Wagyu Beef Carpaccio and the Spanish Octopus. Both were probably some of the best appetizers i've ever had. The octopus was crisp along with the risotto which was so flavorful. The carpaccio was nicely designed and had a great taste as well. Both were perfectly portioned as well for two people. For an entree, we split the 45oz Prime Porterhouse. They said it would take 45 minutes to prepare, but it ended up coming in probably 25 minutes? But wow, it was so flavorful and the butter with it was spectacular as well. Nice, crispy edges and mostly cooked to perfection. A few slices were a little undercooked but not terribly. First time patron. On a Wednesday night. Very trendy atmosphere. However I don't think I would go back. Our party of 5 with a reservation was sat at a small 4 person table. There were many empty tables when we arrived and when we left so it was possible to give us a little more room. We had a table of 4 loud women to our right and a table of 6 loud women to our left. Too noisy overall. Service was slow. Food was slow. No one asked if we wanted another drink. The only positive was the food was good. Everyone in our party enjoyed their entree. What wasn't good was someone from my party asked for the house Chardonnay as we were all ordering from the Happy Hour menu and the bartender didn't say anything about it not being part of the happy hour menu. We called and spoke to someone who told us that the happy hour white wine rotates daily and it wasn't the happy hour white for the day. Not sure why the bartender didn't happen to mention that when everything ordered was on happy hour menu even when we spent about $100. Came here a couple weeks back with a friend I haven't seen in a while without a reservation early on a Friday night and were able to be seated at the bar right away. The staff was more than friendly, helped up pick out drinks and gave us plenty of time to order. The restaurant itself is gorgeous! The decor, the seating, the views! All of it was so well done and thought out perfectly. Now the food on the other hand--- both of us found it lack luster. We ordered a steak tartare which both of us have had our fair shares of at many restaurants around the city. We found it flavorless and could have done without. I showed it to another friend of mine who was a head chef for many years in Chicago and moved to San Diego as a General Manager for a Consortium Holdings restaurant and she immediately asked why did the meat look oxidized. We split an entree which I can't remember what it was exactly-whatever the eggplant dish was with ground beef and chickpeas. While the chickpeas, beef and sauce tasted great- the eggplant which is suppose to be the start of the dish was undercooked and difficult to chew. For something named after the ingredient I at least expected the eggplant to be the star of the show. We decided to skip on desert as the price of everything was already up there in the mid hundred realm for our couple of drinks and food. All in all- a beautiful restaurant but poor food. Much like my thoughts about all of consortiums properties- this seems like another restaurant group which spends lots of money on the interior design and the food is just an after thought. If you're coming for drinks, you'll love it. If yoye here for aesthetics, this is your place. If you're a foodie coming for a good meal you should check another restaurant. read more

Went there for happy hour and here are the notes: PARKING Parking took some time to find, but it wasn't impossible. The parking situation looked more intimidating than it actually was. The paid parking wasn't too bad (~$5 for ~2 hours; digital payments accepted) and there was neighborhood parking. Not something that would deter me from returning. DECOR/AMBIANCE Impeccable. The downstairs lobby was cute and everything upstairs was impeccable. Even the restrooms were thoughtfully designed. You know the architects and interior designers were flexing because of how much intention they put in the bathroom alone, an area that is treated as an afterthought in many food places. That spoke volumes about how much care was put in this place. Of course the views were amazing, the music was fitting, and I loved how they didn't rely on the views and vibes only to "carry" the restaurant. The basics--food, customer service, and cleanliness--were actually good, which makes this place easily a new favorite worth coming back to repeatedly. The views are a reason to come the first time and the food and customer service are reasons to *return.* ELEVATOR (CON; reason for 1 star deducted) They had news playing in the elevator. This exposure to negativity put a damper on things for my friend and I, as we were looking to have a great time and not be reminded of problems that are not within our control at the moment--we weren't sure why the news was on the screen and what the restaurant intended for us to do with negative headlines that we LITERALLY had no ability to impact. It was an unnecessary attack with negativity right before we were planning on enjoying ourselves. It was extremely counter to the emotion that the restaurant was seemingly trying to have guests feel when they interact with the restaurant. While there is a place for news, this felt super out of place and unhelpful to the nervous system. If there is any urgent information, it will find its way to us otherwise--we didn't need to have the news as we rode in an elevator. BAR and HAPPY HOUR FOOD Ladies, *deep* underneath the bar are hooks for purses (we discovered this late in our visit--I wish the bartenders announced this so we could have sat more comfortably without squeezing our purses in our seats, etc., but I'm just glad they put this detail in the bar)!!! The happy hour menu was good, with group favorites being the fries (seasoned with curry) with sauce (basil pesto aioli, I believe. It tasted similar to a green goddess dressing, but more addictive) and fried artichokes. Least favorite was the chicken skewer--it came cold and flavorless. STAFF Incredibly helpful, informative, and friendly. Willing to chat with guests and make things happen for guests. Shout out to Elvia (apologies, I know I'm not spelling that correctly) for getting my friend the name of the Spotify playlist that was on (the music added to the wonderful vibe). Bartender and the hostess downstairs were friendly, willing to take questions and laugh with us. The view is Amazing - five stars. Ordered five entrees - ended up sending one back - which, I cannot recall the last time I did that. I just about never!!! do that but the Thai Seafood Curry was served with unopened clams - always a bad sign, and before noticing that, a mussel was clearly "off." The cauliflower was serviceable the celery root - well celery root but worth $30 dollars - no. You want to like the watermelon- it looks beautiful - like ahi tuna but tasted "odd." Not a desirable taste. But, like coming back to the fridge at home - even though you need to go shopping and there's nothing in there you really want to eat, I kept coming back trying yet another bite and again - disappointment. Our table of three left it unfinished. If there was a dish we liked it was the eggplant with beef. If this had been the only entree served I would give this place a four star review. It wasn't wow but it was tasty. Tipping the scales to two stars was the service. After the Thai curry disaster I asked that my plate be removed. It was. And then I sat and sat and sat waiting for another plate. I tried signaling people but the overwhelmed staff's attention was very hard to get. Finally got our server as she was clearing another table and she was "ohhh yeah ... sorry." A plate then hastily appeared. We asked for serving utensils for the entrees, that we were supposed to be "enjoying" family style. The server brought one serving utensil for four entrees and looked at us as if we were truly odd to be asking for serving utensils for ALL the entrees. On the way out the host asked how we liked our meal and I started to share my thoughts shared herein. At that point it would have been a really good idea to, ask; "would you like to share your experience with my manager." We did get a sweet apology. The dinner cost $320 including four entrees we paid for, plus a replacement entree, cocktails and a bottle of wine and tip. I feel really annoyed having spent that much for such a mediocre meal, in spite of the view. read more

I've been excited to try this restaurant after seeing pics and videos online. The plating is creative and elegant but the food was mediocre and disappointing. When looking over the cocktail menu, the descriptions were incredible, they sounded creative and cutting edge. The flavor of 3 of their signature cocktails that my group tried were underwhelming...whether too much bitters, too much lime, whatever the case, the foundational element was lost in a medley of ingredients and the flavors didn't compliment the alcohol or each other. If you're paying $20 for a cocktail, you should feel like you're getting a solid drink. Additionally the portions were small. If I'd strained the drink from the ice, I'd be surprised if there was more than 2 ounces of liquid. When I return I'll stick to beer or wine. The food was so below par for a high end restaurant. The fresh focaccia bread seemed dry and chewy like it was leftover from a couple nights ago, the yellowtail crudo was drowned in olive oil so that olive oil is really all I could taste. The fingerling potatoes were under cooked and under seasoned. We had a couple other apps that looked incredible (5 stars for plating) but were terribly disappointing. We intended to stay for dinner but after the appetizers, thought it best to go elsewhere. I will return in a few months and hopefully they have figured out their kitchen deficiencies. There is not a chance that a kitchen manager or chef would've been proud of the food we were served. I was embarrassed for them. Again, the service was outstanding. So I came down from Orange County to hang with a friend and found this listed as a great new place to try. Didn't know it was voted best SD for 2025. Had a great time and loved the food. Seating....book for the terrace. Heaters out there and is very comfortable. Indoor seating is nice if you cant get terrace. Its in the bar area and still nice. Drinks..really tasty! Had the white negroni. These are sorta rare right now. If you dont mind a little bitterness, its really fantastic. Lauren at the front desk is just a great young lady. Jade was our server and was so helpful .recommended the drinks and our food. We went with the potatoes appetizer. VERY good!! I had the sea bass special.
