I am extremely disappointed by my experience here today. A group of four of us came in for happy hour around 5:15 PM on a Monday. We were genuinely excited to be there, as we hadn't all gotten together in over six weeks. We sat at the bar, ordered drinks, and ended up trying nearly every item on the happy hour menu as well as multiple regular menu items. While I personally found most of the food overly salty, the view was beautiful, the atmosphere was enjoyable, and the drinks were good. Unfortunately, the entire experience took a shocking turn. As my friend and I were about to split one final glass of wine, a red-haired employee who had not been our bartender approached us, dropped off the check, and informed us that we would not be served any additional alcohol. No explanation was provided. The entire group was stunned. I have worked in the restaurant industry for over 20 years and am also a small business owner. Because of my background, I fully understand the responsibility that comes with serving alcohol and have absolutely no issue with establishments refusing service to guests who are visibly intoxicated or have had too much to drink. Responsible alcohol service is important. That is precisely why this situation was so confusing. I had barely finished my second drink, was speaking normally, sitting upright, and simply enjoying a conversation with friends. No one in our group was displaying any signs of intoxication, disruptive behavior, or anything that would reasonably justify being cut off. As someone who has spent decades in the industry, I am genuinely struggling to understand what prompted this decision. Because there was no obvious reason given, it left us questioning why our group was singled out in the first place. We were not loud, disruptive, argumentative, messy, or causing any issues whatsoever. We were simply catching up with friends over food and drinks after not seeing each other for weeks. To make matters even more confusing, while leaving we spoke with two gentlemen in the elevator who mentioned they had each consumed three drinks each and appeared significantly more intoxicated than anyone in our group, yet they had been served without issue. That contrast made our treatment even harder to understand. A manager eventually came over, but the conversation did little to address our concerns. Rather than offering a clear explanation or attempting to resolve the situation, it felt as though our concerns were brushed aside. Even after speaking with management, we were left with no real understanding of why this happened. Our group spent approximately $300 on food and drinks, and we had every intention of continuing to enjoy our evening there. Instead, we left feeling embarrassed, confused, and unwelcome. What's most disappointing is that I have dined here before, including for a birthday celebration, and previously had a wonderful experience. I came back expecting the same level of hospitality and service, which made this experience all the more surprising. Whether this was a misunderstanding, poor judgment, or simply poor communication, the situation was handled in a way that left a lasting negative impression. No paying (and always tipping) customer should be abruptly cut off and presented with a check without a clear explanation, especially when there are no visible signs of intoxication or inappropriate behavior. Because of how poorly this situation was handled, I will not be returning, and I will be sharing my experience with others. Everything about this restaurant is so well considered. The dishes range from globally-inspired classics to their own unique creations, which to me indicates that they make what inspires them, and that makes for a fun and impressive menu where they totally nail every dish. And you can tell they prioritize the quality of the ingredients. And with cocktails, too, they do not rest on the laurels of the classics! Though they do classics really well too -- I had an awesome Negroni. Their cocktail list is fun even just to read. The high priestess is INCREDIBLE if you like something a little different, and something with a little heat. Makes me very excited to try the rest of their cocktails. None of them sound like anything I've had before, and many had ingredients I never would've thought to put in a cocktail, but the ones I tried gave me full faith in their craft. I have to give a shoutout to their wine list too. They do not miss, and some serious deep cuts on there. Very knowledgeable staff who can explain what something is when you're not familiar. My favorite thing they told us was that the Tete de Moine cheese is made by monks in the alps. We had a party of 14 and they were very attentive and gave great recommendations since it was all of our first visit. We were there during sunset and wow. You have to go early for that this time of year but I recommend. Then we got the nighttime city view which was fun to identify the different lights of. The outdoor patio seating was plenty warm on a winter night (we actually had them turn our heaters down). And the indoor space is so beautiful. Between the ceiling over the bar, the curling candles, the mural, the butterflies (ask the manager about them -- we were sitting by them so she told us about it!), the bathrooms(!!!), etc., the little design details make the place feel like an art piece you get to enter into. Also, I'm a sucker for the Aesop hand soap... Food & drink highlights: focaccia, High Priestess cocktail (I will dream about this), Spanish octopus, coconut poached sea bass, and sticky toffee apple cake. We went on Valentine's weekend and they'd decorated for the occasion, which honestly looked amazing: romantic without feeling cheesy, and it made the whole room feel special. Service was a highlight from start to finish. Attentive, warm, and well-paced--exactly what you want for a nicer dinner where you're settling in for multiple courses. The cocktails were genuinely good, but this is definitely an "expense-account" kind of cocktail menu. You're paying for the setting and the execution, and while the drinks delivered, expect the bill to match the vibe. Food-wise, the appetizers were a mixed bag. The chicken nuggets with caviar sounded fun and indulgent, but it landed as...fine. Not bad, just not something I'd order again compared to the rest of the menu. Where Communion really shines is the mains. The pork belly was delicious--rich, well-cooked, and satisfying. The duck was the star of the night: outstanding, the kind of dish that makes you say yum! The lobster risotto was another win, comforting, flavorful, and exactly what you hope a splurge dish will be. One complaint, though--and it's a strange one: they were burning a scented candle. The space looked beautiful, but the fragrance was distracting and threw the whole dining experience off a bit. In a restaurant, especially one at this level, the food should be the aroma. It didn't ruin the night, but it was noticeable enough to mention. Bottom line: If you want a date-night restaurant with great views, excellent service, strong cocktails, and truly impressive mains (especially the duck), Communion delivers. This means street parking is your only option, which can be quite frustrating for locals. During my visit, I opted for just a glass of Prosecco (they didn't have champagne flutes available yet!), but the atmosphere was lively and inviting. It seems the Lamb Lollipops are a popular choice, as I heard neighboring diners rave about them. Interestingly, the restaurant is also known for its Baked Triple Cream, which has generated quite a buzz. I appreciated their commitment to local ingredients, featuring Escondido Oyster Mushrooms and Local Yellowtail in their Crudo. The outdoor patio offers the best seating, providing an unobstructed view of downtown, complete with heat lamps for added comfort. Located in Mission Hills, the patio offered stunning views that added to the ambiance, making it a wonderful spot for a special meal. What We Tried: Beef Tartare: Fresh, flavorful, and a strong start to the meal. Escondido Oyster Mushrooms: Earthy and cooked to perfection--such a satisfying side. Beet Fillet: Creative and full of depth, a surprising highlight. The carrots were spicy! Dry-Aged Duck: Unfortunately, this dish missed the mark. While the plate was beautifully presented, it lacked flavor the flavors we expected. We suggest they put in a little seasoning or even a tiny bit of a Himalayan salt or any seasoning to bring out some flavor. Escondido Oyster Mushrooms: The absolute star of the evening! Creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced with the oyster mushrooms and parmesan polenta, we'd return just for this dish. The service Kay was another standout. I was fortunate enough to dine with a large group so we tried many menu items and we were all impressed with every one. From the moment we entered the space we enjoyed the design details, but once we were led to our table on the patio the view set the tone for the experience. There were many dishes I decided were my favorite, only to decide the next was actually my favorite. Topping my list at the end of the meal for me were the Lamb Lollipops, Mushroom Risotto, and the Coconut Poached Seabass. Others at the table loved the Brie dish, but being gluten free I wasn't able to try it. Server was very knowledgeable and menu was clearly marked for allergens! Overall I didn't have to pass on many dishes given my gluten intolerance, which was a bonus. This brings me to dessert...every single dessert was gluten free and I did try them all. It was hard to pick a favorite because I loved them all so much! Great experience from start to finish! read more
