What a great addition to Mission Hills. The staff is always friendly and very attentive. Eliza at the bar doesn't hesitate to ask what kind of drinks you like and what flavor profile you're looking for. Then she gets her creative juices flowing and makes incredible cocktails. This is proven by the specialty cocktails listed on the menu. I've had a few of them and have yet to be disappointed. But don't stop at the cocktails. The food is delicious. I especially like the wagyu carpaccio. The lollipop lamb chops are great to share as is the peas and artichoke salad. You'll see everyone eating the foccacia for good reason. Beautifully fluffy bread with a mixe crisp crust. The only distraction is that it can be noisy. Though I haven't sat on the heated patio as yet. The place is beautiful, the food was tasty, but there were multiple parties around us who were fully consumed in their phones, to the point it was very distracting to our experience. A child was listening to a phone on full volume and a couple were individually on FaceTime calls, while the woman also was taking endless selfies (with a second phone!) getting us in the background. These behaviors were very disruptive to the "vibe" of the place. Our servers were kind and apologized after our meal, but at no point did any manager come in to stop the behavior. I went there with my friends, the bartender had a very bad attitude that day and did not treat us well. There were more workers than customers at the bar. I talked to the manager about the customer service I was getting she stated that she would compensate me but I never heard back since. I will never go back here. Stopped by with my girlfriend to check out the big pink building in mission hills, and the hostess downstairs was so kind and welcoming and insisted we head up for happy hour after showing us the menu (and recommending the pork wings which were delicious). You have to take an elevator to the rooftop and the views are some of the best I've seen in San Diego by far. A second host greeted us warmly as we arrived upstairs snd took us over to the bar where the seats were filled pretty quickly. I forget our bartenders name but the drinks were amazing and we will definitely be back. Great hospitality and food. read more

We were excited to try the new restaurant in our neighborhood, but unfortunately Communion cannot compete with its stellar Mission Hills neighbors. The Good: Pink is my favorite color and this restaurant is basically the Barbie dream house come to life. It's very cute inside and the views are fantastic. The server was lovely and so was the wine (our first bottle of Mourvèdre from Australia). The cocktails were good too (the server's advisement about "spirit forward" was accurate and appreciated). The highlights of the meal were the caviar and the baked triple cream. I wish there had been a bit more caviar and the portion on the baked triple cream was tiny--but I would eat it every single day. The chaat masala potato dish was also good, but the flavors were very subtle (it's basically potato chips and dip). The best part of the whole experience was the dessert: a mind-blowingly delicious Basque cheesecake with perfectly salted caramel. I wish the pastry chef cooked everything. The Bad: With the exceptions noted above, the food was not good. Everything was under seasoned to such a degree that we wondered a) if there was any salt in the kitchen and b) if anyone was tasting the food. The truffle risotto was a travesty: huge chunks of truffles on a watered down risotto with absolutely zero flavor. We each took one bite and sent it back. There were some good flavors in the dolmeh eggplant but it was crying out for salt. I can count on one hand the times I've asked a waiter for salt, and when we did, we received an embarrassingly small salt shaker. Our server comped the eggplant even though we ate it all because they were embarrassed by how many times we tried to salt the dish. I agree with the other reviewer about the hamachi crudo drowning in oil; it also needed salt and more citrus. The tomato strawberry salad was good but under seasoned and the ratio of ingredients was off (it needed more radishes and cilantro and had way too much dressing). It was also clear from our server that it was not the first time they heard complaints about bland food and lack of salt. We ordered five dishes initially and, despite a promise that things would be coursed out, received the first three dishes at once. Thank goodness we had a large enough table but we felt rushed and couldn't enjoy the individual dishes. This is one of our least favorite things that happens at a restaurant (not sure if it was the front or back of the house). It's very loud inside, both the music and the packed bar, making it hard to have a conversation with your table mates. Luckily we had a four-top so we could sit together on one side. The other bizarre thing about Communion is that you have to wait downstairs on the uncovered patio before you are allowed in the elevator to the restaurant. Between the open air and the wind tunnel created by the long hallway, it was a very, very cold wait. We arrived about five minutes early and weren't seated until 10 minutes after our reservation, and we were both freezing by the time we made it in. I imagine that this set up will be just as uncomfortable once the summer comes and folks are roasting in the sun. I don't understand what the owners are thinking here and hope they work out the kinks. The Ugly: High prices and small portions seem here to stay. We don't mind paying for great food. But paying this much for mediocre food left a very bad taste in our mouths, and we won't be back. Especially with rockstars Wolf in the Woods, Fort Oak, and Cardellino close by. I can't see this restaurant being open for long. Side note: it sure seems like the majority of good reviews come from "Yelp Elite" folks. Take those with a grain of salt (but bring your own because you won't find any at Communion). read more

We live 3 blocks away and hated the building (Pepto Dismal) from the moment it was finished, and avoided the restaurant because of it. Bad! We gave it a try this evening and it was the best non-sushi meal we have had in San Diego, totally beating out Born and Raised. Of course, as advertised, the views were amazing, but the food was better. The teriyaki pork belly appetizer was the best pork belly dish we've ever had, and the main Chateaubriand was, again, the best we've ever had. It is more than enough for two. This was a pleasant surprise, restaurant is very pretty without being over the top, service was attentive and communicative, drinks were solid with many different options and the use of some great smaller brands. The food was really good, Everything we had was well presented and a lot of thought went into it. I think the Gnocchi was my favorite. The basque cheesecake was also amazing. Also the view is amazing, One of the best in San Diego! Great spot for a drink and appetizer especially in the warmer months. Will be coming back here soon!!! While I am not a fan of the 4% surcharge I have had conversations with a couple restaurant owners and the amount of people blasting them on yelp when they up their prices along with the work it takes to change their pricing on all platforms of their menu does not motivate them to change their menu pricing. We can't have it both ways. Please ask questions, be open to a restaurant changing their pricing due to increased costs and support your local restaurants because they need it. read more

This place is definitely a hot spot ! It was my first time . I had already had lunch nearby , but wanted to go for an evening libation. I was nervous about how casually I was dressed because it looks super nice ( which it was ) on the inside . I was first greeted by the two hosts by the elevator. I expressed to both of them that I felt underdressed, and they immediately put me at ease. My party and I walked in and were taken back by the beautiful view overlooking San Diego. I instantly felt better seeing that people were dressed up and down! The bartenders immediately greeted us in a very friendly fashion, which made us feel at home. The drinks were made with not only good quality and fresh ingredients, but strong like I like them. Sage was our main bartender and he was AWESOME! He chatted with us while making several drinks . A must visit for the amazing views and good food. For the best views try to get a table on the patio, and watch the planes land with the downtown skyline as the backdrop. On to the food. We started with some focaccia and the baked brie- with berry compote. Delicious! The ahi poke was served with generous portion of avocado and seasoned just right. The pork dish was cooked perfectly but the rice that accompanied it needed to be cooked more and had some hard pieces. First visit to this new restaurant, the locale is great, the interior design good but the food and drinks a "work in process". Wife and I have different opinions on the overall experience, she would give them 4 stars. First, we ordered a drink to start with her a glass of wine and me a cocktail. The had only 1 chardonnay and the mixed drink on their list with bourbon was worth a try. However, they brought me the wrong cocktail, it didn't seem right but what do I know, this is some wild drink with many ingredients (most of which I was not familiar). I tasted the drink they brought and thought it strange tasting from what I anticipated. After 2 or 3 sips they finally recognized their mistake and brought me the correct drink, much better. OOPS! A bad start and experience will remedy some of this as the staff is more aware. Ordered the focaccia bread with olive oil butter, good bread but the butter could use some work (quality French butter from Normandy is a fav). Octopus dish was excellent-tastes very good. Ahi Poke dish also quite good, super fresh Ahi, super ripe avocado and well prepared with a good presentation. We finished with lamb lollipops, a dish I have made a thousand times, theirs was good quality meat and well cooked at med rare. However, the 2 lollipops were too large for a small dish presentation-more spices and smaller size with 4 smaller portions. I know I made this sound like a disaster but it wasn't, I recommend anyone try it and as time passes all these issues will be resolved. First, let me say that Communion is a nice addition to the neighborhood. Also, the service was very friendly. The view is spectacular and the ambiance is great. I enjoy pricey restaurants so the bill didn't bother me. However, the menu is a little too exotic for my tastes. I much prefer the happy hour menu at Ruth Chris or Eddy V's. Both the size and taste were not what I would expect for the price. It's a nice place to take out of town guests for a drink but not a place where I would go to on a regular basis! Still, glad it's in Mission Hills and will return when I have visitors. read more

The 1 star is for the asthetics. First time visit made a reservation noted there was a birthday and wanted the patio. Walked in not very busy Sat us at the table directly behind the host stand. I decided not to make a big deal and ask for the patio. The server was definitely not into his job. I can just summon up in 1 way there was no pep in his step, he was checked out. No recognition of a bday at the table. Drinks took forever -we were ready to order, but he didn't give us that option at all -quickly walked away. That was the only time he quickly did anything. As far as drinks go one of my friends never got a coffee refill or even the option to ask we had to ask the hose to get our server to order more drinks. We have been empty for far too long. Ordered my steak medium came out extra well done I just gave him my feedback. I didn't ask for another, but they nicely cooked another one and it was cooked. Pretty good. There seemed to be one good dish at the table. The pork was dry, almost like it was triple fried my friends omelette was decent. You can't really mess up an omelette. We could not get our servers attention../supposedly in the end they said there was a staffing issue. We didn't see him the last hour whatsoever. It's all about communication and the only communication going on was with myself asking the host twice for something and asking someone if they were the manager. Instead of getting charged to something 200. My friend was charged 325 and got a notification on her phone, we inquired about that, which is when I looked at the bill and noticed I was charged for my birthday dessert which I did not ask for-my friends towards the end of the meal had mentioned it was my birthday. The manager was nice, but really no taking ownership, my friend who paid had to call back the next day and still not really an apology. Just excuses. It was literally fish, apple, grapefruit, and olive oil. Maybeeee some salt flakes. Had no flavor. Three creamed cheese dough (forgot what it's called) - this was yummy and presentable. Fingerling potatoes - they were fine ish. Just potatoes Lamb lollipops - my friend ordered that and didn't care for it. I did not like. I originally ordered the sea bass but after 1.5 hours of being there and three plate/dining changes it still wasn't ready. We waited about 30 minutes from the last shareable that came out and the sea bass still hadn't come out. That part was disappointing. We were very excited when this restaurant popped up close to where we live and really wanted to love it, especially after we heard positive reviews. We were seated at the outside patio and the view was obviously stunning-a beautiful location in the heart of Mission Hills and a unique concept. After we were seated our server took our drink orders and encouraged us to order everything at once and the dishes would be coursed out. We started with the mussels escabeche and beef tartare and she seemed put off that we didn't order our entreés-a palate may take a different direction based on the starters/drinks-a customer should never feel rushed in their dining experience. Ironically, minutes after the mussels arrived our tartare also arrived. Another server apologized when we said we wanted to enjoy each dish one at a time and promptly took the tartare back but when it reappeared it obviously had been sitting and the chicharrones were soggy. We then ordered the lamb lollipops which lacked salt/flavor and was overall underwhelming with a strange side salad. The lobster risotto had good flavor but felt rushed and arrived slightly warm. To cap off the night we did enjoy a delicious apple crumble, perhaps the best part of the dinner. Overall I feel the decor with the faux marble tables appeared cheap, combined with food that was 'almost there' but lacked salt, acid and imagination made our experience just ok. With so many amazing restaurants in San Diego our experience at Communion was mediocre. read more

This was...just okay. The decor and view is what you're paying for, but even so the venue was very loud despite it not even being all that crowded. We were seated at a table on the north side of the restaurant, but south side or bar has the best views. We tried the pea and artichoke hummus (3 out of 5) and the chaat masala potatoes (2.5 out of 5). Based on the appetizers we weren't enticed to eat anything else. We were interested in the dry aged duck, listed in the online menu, but it's no longer available. For drinks we tried the Shakti, Supreme Sacrifice, Divine Garden, High Priestess, Yama's Reign, and Sherry Sherry Lady. Despite us preferring "spirit forward" drinks we both felt the Yama's Reign and Sherry Sherry Lady were the best of the cocktails. For dessert we had The Ritual, which was gritty and underwhelming with the (creamed/whipped?) ice cream eclipsing the more interesting cake and pudding base. Service was attentive and polite without being intrusive: well done. We spent over $200 overall but there wasn't a single thing that would really make me want to come back. read more
