Impeccable. I popped in here for a late lunch and settled for the Arugala and Fig salad, $16. The blend of arugula and greens, hazelnuts, figs, goat cheese with a fig vinegar drizzle was very good. The bread basket was also wonderful and had some surprise additions that I wasn't expecting with toasted Italian bread garnished with rosemary, a mix of olives and chunks of Parmesan. The friendly hostess seated us immediately. This beautiful restaurant sits atop The Newbury and the exterior walls and ceiling are glass. We will return!
The first and second time I came here from NYC I was literally obsessed with this place! Coming to Contessa is always the highlight of my trip. This time around it was a bit lackluster. We were seated on time for our 8:30 pm reservation on Sunday. Our server and hostess were kind. I can't complain about the service. Disappointed they took the pizza off the menu. We had the meatballs, which I was not a fan of, and squash carpaccio for apps. I did enjoy the squash carpaccio. The meatballs were okay and I didn't love the cabbage on them. I ordered the lobster capellini, which I ordered twice previously. It was very ok. For $50 I was expecting more lobster. I had an aperol spritz which was good and my friend had the raspberry cobbler which she enjoyed. I will say I do appreciate the focaccia and cheese that comes with the food. We finished with the nutella cake and coffee and hazelnut gelato. All in all it was a good meal, but definitely not as good as it used to be in my opinion. Its a great place for photos and drinks if thats what you're looking for. I do recommend trying this place out though at least once.
Had reservations for 2:30pm father's day... parking wasn't the greatest when we arrived so I went in a few minutes before our reservation time with the kids while hubs looked for parking which only took him about 10 mins. Going over the menu, we realized it was only a brunch menu (which we didn't think of when we made the reservation but we were fine with that), but what was upsetting was being informed at 2:45 (a few minutes after we ordered or drinks) that they're kitchen was closing in 10 mins. I wished this was information that was given when making that reservation that way we would have made the reservation earlier or made dinner reservations instead. Hubby had the salmon dish 6/10 I had the french toast 3/10 Bellini drink 8/10 Kid 1: had fruits and gluten free bread 7/10 Kid 2: had spaghetti with butter 9/10
We came here with a reservation for brunch on a Sunday and were seated immediately. The decor was lush and gorgeous, with floral wallpaper, velvet seating, and views overlooking the Public garden. I was worried that this spot might be an overly hyped Instagram spot, but that turned out not to be the case at all. Despite how busy it was, service was attentive, with our servers taking our orders, serving our food, and refilling our waters promptly. The food itself was also delicious and a reasonable price with large portion sizes. I would definitely come back for brunch again or to try their dinner!
I really loved the ambiance and vibes of Contessa! Also probably one of the real selling points of this restaurant is its rooftop garden-isque atmosphere. I came here for a work dinner and had reservations prior. We were seated promptly towards the back. I can see how lovely this restaurant would be during the day and during sunset. Unfortunately for us, it was gloomy and rainy. The glass walls do border all sides of the perimeter so despite it being rainy, it was really nice and warm inside, while being unbothered by the rain. We ordered the pesto tomato burrata and the squash melon carpaccio to share. Both dishes were very refreshing to eat so it was really nice on the palate to have something lighter before something heavier. Tomatoes and burrata were both very fresh as well as the squash carpaccio. The carpaccio literally tasted like fall - yum! I was recommended to try the lobster pasta. Wow, it was delicate yet bold! Angel hair made it feel light and easy without overpowering the lobster pieces. The sauce seems like it's tomato based so very light to balance off the heaviness of the lobster. It looked small when it was served but it was quite sizable as I wasn't able to completely finish it. Definitely come for the great vibes and scenic view from the rooftop but also expect it to be a bit on the expensive side.
Great views, you can see the prudential from this place. The decoration was elegant, and they have a coat check on the bottom floor if you need. The food tasted good and fresh. The fusili pesto had a solid taste, and the pesto tasted very fresh. The squash carpaccio was amazing and a solid appetizer that I would definitely get again. The ricotta was a pleasant surprise. It was a small portion, but it had a really good taste and texture, and it was pretty sweet. The lemon tart tasted great and honestly you can't ask for better. The Nutella cake was a solid cake with a straight-up chocolate taste. The ribeye was solid, and I liked the roasted garlic that it came with. The rosemary potatoes had a nice taste, seasoning, and texture. The broccoli was not bad either. It was a little tightly packed, but there were still a lot of seats. We were able to make a reservation only 1-2 days ahead for a Thursday night for 7 people, which was surprisingly easy. Overall, a really nice spot with good food, good views, and a great atmosphere.
We got a reservation just a couple days before for a late night dinner. So so so pretty and great vibes all around. Everyone was saying how expensive it is, for 2 including 3 alcoholic beverages it was $180 with tip- not bad for an upper scale dining experience at all. We had the sweet corn ravioli and fried calamari- so delicious! Great vegetarian options, the drinks were strong, and the dessert was so so so good (and sweet).
I highly recommended the apps, but the entrees I'd skip on personally. Highly recommend the burratta, trio of dips, and the feta 2.0 is so delicious best thing on the menu! Would come again for drinks and starters.
Now, I cannot speak about the food at Contessa just yet because I have not tried, but my roommate and I headed up for a drink to kill time while waiting for a spot at the Street Bar and I was blown away by the vibes and my martini. It is truly such a beautiful restaurant. I normally am the type of person who makes a lot at home, particularly drinks, because I like to make it how I make it, and I must say this martini was the closest to the one I make. I loved it and I can't wait to go back.
My friend and I came here for drinks during the day and it's such a vibe! It's definitely the move to sit at the bar and sip on a refreshing drink with an insane backdrop of Boston behind. Look at all that natural light?! The entire place was so bright and lit up during the day which added such a nice ambiance to everything. The Sgroppino is the perfect drink on a hot day (it's kind've like you're sipping on an Italian ice). Will be back!
This was my favorite meal of my entire week in Boston. I just felt so peaceful & pampered the whole time. The views were incredible. The food was amazing. The service was impeccable. The complimentary bread basket with balsamic-drizzled Parmesan and the biggest olives I've ever seen was such a nice surprise. Even better was the dessert! I never order dessert, but this was so good -- probably the best vanilla ice cream I've had in my life. And yeah, the espresso martini -- definitely the best I've had in my life. The shaved chocolate on top was absolute perfection. This is my new favorite absolute-must-visit spot in Boston.
I came here on a beautiful snowy day with my BF, his parents, and my parents. This is kind of like a rooftop bar, but enclosed, so the view is gorgeous. The ambience, furniture, and decor are so fun--it's a great place to go for an upscale brunch. We made a reservation for 6, and it did take us about 10-15 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated, service continued to be somewhat slow. It took a few more minutes for us to order our coffee and then for the coffee to arrive. It seemed like the servers were switching around tables, which may have contributed to the slowness. The food was really tasty! I ordered the Florentine Benedict, which I actually loved and felt like worked so well. My BF's French toast was HUGE so we all ended up eating some of it. It felt like the portions were a bit lacking -- most of us had only one thing on the plate, without any home fries or decorative fruit or anything. I kind of would expect more from a restaurant that holds itself out to be more high-end and charges so much for its dishes. Like not even a piece of parsley to make the plate less empty? Overall, I really did like this place and would love to come back. It's right by the Common and Newbury Street, so I feel like it's a great place to get dressed up, get brunch/dinner, and then stroll around a bit.
We came on a snowy Sunday morning so the rooftop view was stunning. Felt like being in Paris even though the food had an Italian flair. My Florentine Benedict was delicious although not generous. We agreed the French toast was the hit of the meal. What kept it from being 5 stars: 1. Service was slow- took forever to get coffee and even longer to get refills. And then even longer for more cream. And the coffee wasn't that good 2. Even though food was tasty, prices are so high that feels like portions should have been a little more generous (or a lot more generous), or should have had more oomph. I guess you come because of the view and ambience.

had a lovely dinner at contessa! sat by the window and the view is nice same with the overall vibe of the restaurant so would love to come back and take friends here!! however i will say the food was lacking for my personal tastes and i think the pastas were alright but specifically the lobster capellini which is super popular was pretty subpar as the overall flavor lacked depth and for 50 dollars you would expect more lobster! then again price was expected from a nicer end boston restaurant and service was good so overall not my favorite but also not that bad! read more

My god, I don't think I've ever had a better experience at any restaurant ever in my whole life! The waitstaff was phenomenal, and made sure I was well taken care of! The restaurant was immaculately decorated, and the views from the rooftop were to die for! Although pricey, my food was worth every single dollar. I would've paid twice as much for my pasta. Even the bread basket (which included fresh baked bread, an assortment of olives, and cheeses drizzled in balsamic vinaigrette). I was so relaxed, comfortable, and felt like I could have stayed there eating and drinking all day! Can't wait to come back! read more
Contessa is a literal vibe and definitely a must if visiting Boston. While it is on the pricier side, you are paying for the aesthetic and great view of the city. I ordered the fusilli genovese which is essentially a pesto pasta. The flavors were amazing and the pasta cooked perfectly al dente. Had brunch at Contessa on a recent Saturday. Beautiful space, but the food is is pretty basic and way overpriced for the quality of the food. we only had access to the brunch menu which was pretty sparse and not particularly appealing and again very basic. I had salmon carpaccio, which is basically salmon you could buy from the store on a plate with some cut up cherry tomatoes, and cut up cucumbers I've done this at much better myself. My friend had granola which was just granola with some fruit, and there was a lot of confusion over whether it had dried fruit (he's allergic to raisins) and the server should've known without having to go check with the Kitchen about it Although everyone is extremely polite the service was not great with during our brunch. They forgot to bring the pastry basket, when they brought it didn't bring any silverware which, and didn't bring any side plates to eat the pastries on which isn't goodService... . . but on the plus side matchbooks who does that anymmore?! My friend in Boston wanted to treat me out for a nice fancy brunch and brought me here, it had been a while since I last saw him, and I had traveled all the way from SoCal to see him. Apparently, he previously had a good experience, but alas, our time here was quiet subpar this time around Food: we went a little early on a weekday, and they had breakfast menu instead of brunch. Several of the listed dishes including the benedict were actually not available. So we ended up ordering frittata verde, carbonara scramble, and a side of smoked salmon. Frittata was just OK, nothing special, it tasted like egg white with just a little bit of pesto mixed in. Scramble was again, egg with a just a little bit of cheese mixed in, along with a huge amount of salt. The smoked salmon was good, but I think I can get the same at trader joes for cheaper price Price: so unnecessarily expensive for breakfast that was underwhelming. Each dish ranged $21-24, I'd rather go somewhere else honestly Ambiance: I guess most people choose to come here for the view and vibes of this place, rather than food. The entrance is tucked away, and you have to take a tiny little elevator to go up. Once inside, the restaurant itself is pretty big and spacious with many tables and seats. The boston skyline from the windows is beautiful and definitely elevated the luxury experience. But the morning sun was shining down on my friend's face and eyes, it didn't look very comfortable. I guess this would be a good fancy date night sorta place Service: the waiter was OK, he was a bit cold and curt, not the most friendliest person. But he got our orders and served our food. The food was great! We had a reservation for 7 pm but didn't get seated until about 7:15. We ordered a bottle of wine, the artichoke, the beef carpaccio, fettuccine bolognese, and the ricotta gnudi. WOW. Have been trying to go here for so long and unfortunately couldn't find a suitable time for dinner, which seems very popular, but went for lunch instead and honestly a very underrated time. Not only is there beautiful sunlight flooding into the beautifully and intricately designed restaurant, but their food is absolutely delicious as well. I got the macaroni with wild boar ragu and it tastes like they put a lot of care into making it. It was amazing and I loved the thin sheets of the noodles that really added to it. Btw it's not the macaroni noodles you're thinking of. The service matched the ambiance and quality of their food. Our server was super sweet and chatty, carrying a nice balance of formal but kind and invested in our table. He even gave me a congratulations pastry for graduating! As for the bathroom, it definitely deserves a 5/5. One of the most beautiful bathrooms around Boston, equipped with all your needs, the thick paper towels, and just beautiful decor all around that showcases that they were really thorough and intentional with the restaurant. read more
Contessa is a stunning restaurant. The interior is adorable and the rooftop setting has one of the best views of Boston I have seen - it is definitely a great place to wow visitors or have a cute meal with the girls. However, the food is very overpriced - I thought the tuna crudo appetizer was pretty delicious but my main dish of the Genovese fusilli was just fine and a small portion. The service was great- very attentive and accommodating to give us a seat with the view and open the window on a hot summer day! Sadly Contessa did not live up to my expectations. The restaurant itself is gorgeous with beautiful lighting and photo ops, but the food was extremely average... and especially for the prices, it was definitely not worth it. We came for brunch, and there is no complimentary bread as it's only offered during dinner. We ordered: Spicy Lobster Capellini Panetonne French Toast Margherita Pizza These were some of their top items, yet none of them stood out. Very average tasting and nothing special. Service was also not great, they are not attentive at all and it was difficult to track someone down. I wouldn't come back here, but it was nice to see what the hype is all about. read more

So many friends recommended Contessa that we had to fit it in to our short Boston stay. We opted for breakfast there and loved it! The space is stunning, from the gorgeous view over the Public Gardens to the beautiful tiled floor. We felt pampered as the service is good but not rushed and the food was delicious. One friend said her avocado toast was the best she'd ever had. The tomatoes tasted like summer tomatoes and it's only April. I had the frittata with pesto and avocado which was a treat. Creamy avocado sliced over an egg white frittata with just the right amount of pesto. Great way to start the day! read more

I've been to Contessa twice. First time I went for dinner. The view was nice. The service was fine. The food was mediocre. I was most confused because I'd order tortellini..it must have been tortellini brodo (in broth)..and they bring out a plate of 12 tiny tortellini's..not a single touching..and pour chicken broth over it. It was listed as a primi I believe. At many restaurants primi and secondi are often both entrees, so it's really confusing when it's certainly not the case here, especially when it's listed next to other clear entrees. I don't think that would be a problem if the wait staff assisted guests more, but since at this time and even more recently the staff make themselves sparse...you don't have a chance to order anything else to compensate when these things happen. More recently, going to brunch there was what seemed to be a wide disparity in the plating of what ended up being very modest eggs Benedict's and a massive avocado toast. So while 1 person was stuffed, the rest were leaving hungry and looking up coffee shops to amend lacking fare. It's most unusual for eggs Benedict to not be a satisfying safe choice. The continuity in general is lacking. While the setting is nice, the rest is not well thought out and I imagine you'd need to try a few times before you figure out how to avoid the pot holes in their dining experience...like one person being over served and the other being far underserved. I do like coming for the view, but with many other great restaurants in the area it'll be some time before we give Contessa another try. read more

I've been wanting to go for quite some time. My girlfriend and I went for an impromptu dinner and was pleasantly surprised that reviews on atmosphere was on point. Beautifully decorated overlooking Boston. Our waiter (didn't catch his name) was funny and extremely attentive. The best dish of the night was the squash carpaccio followed very closely by the octopus. I would come back just for these dishes! We also ordered the salmon, mushroom side, lobster pasta. All came out to be $200 before tip (neither of us drink). Would definitely go back again for a nice dinner. read more

I had a lovely brunch at Contessa with my mom today! We have been wanting to go for a while and finally had a special occasion for it. We came on a Sunday at 12:30 for brunch and it was pretty crowded so definitely make a reservation. It is very expensive but worth it. Great drink and food menu. A standout dish was the ricotta gnudi. Unique and delicious. Would definitely recommend that. The ambiance is stunning. Gorgeous rooftop vibe. Views of the whole city. Amazing service as well. As the first people to welcome you into an establishment, they don't do a good job of making guests feel happy to be there We had girls day brunch at Contessa and we enjoyed the vibes and overall aesthetic. Our server Phil was awesome - so attentive and provided great recommendations and answers to our questions about the menu. We got the tuna crudo and the squash carpaccio as our starters. For our entrees, we shared the spicy lobster capellini, fusilli Genovese and the veal Milanese - we enjoyed them all! We got the pastas gluten free style and they were both delicious. read more

Stop everything and book a reservation at this restaurant! Seriously, reservations need to be made at least a month in advance. I booked in mid-September for my birthday dinner in late October and could only secure a 9:30 PM seating. It was late, but absolutely worth it! The restaurant is located inside a hotel on Newbury Street. You take the elevator up to the rooftop, where you're treated to stunning views of the Boston skyline--depending on where you're seated. The ambiance made it a perfect spot for a special occasion. As someone who's gluten-free, I was happy that they could accommodate me with a delicious lobster pasta and even a birthday dessert. Their drinks were both strong and incredibly tasty, making it all a truly memorable dining experience. read more

Hmm, this is a tough review as there are many things going for Contessa and my expectations were set fairly high. We dined here with friends to celebrate my wife's birthday. Getting a reservation is ridiculously hard. You will need to set a calendar reminder to look for a spot 30 days before you want to dine and try to secure one at the moment the reservations open that day. Then you will likely only be offered a 5:30 or 5:45 slot, or something very late. I presume most tables are reserved for their hotel guests. Despite comments to the contrary, we were greeted by very friendly staff who assured us we would have one of their best tables, and they did not disappoint. They wished us a good time celebrating my wifes birthday. The views from the dining room are fantastic, and while it was a brutally cold Boston night, we were very comfortable with heat radiating from above and aside the windows. Our server was also very nice, but there were a number of small missteps which I would not expect when dining at this price point. Let me say there is a reason that there are no prices posted on their website! Cocktails start at $22 and you can even find an entree for over $200. The wine list is stratospheric. SO, yes at that point expectations are high and while our server was good, the delivery was not there. My wife had to ask three times for a beverage. Our side of vegetable never arrived, nor was anybody around to check on that. Coffee came well after all our desserts were delivered and consumed. At the end of the meal, we mentioned the missing vegetables and our waitress said "she would remove that charge for us". I sure hope so, for something that never arrived! How about the food? Good, some very good, but nothing exceptional. The meatball appetizers were a delight, but the tempura fried calamari was hard , overcooked and rubbery. A real let down. Whipped Ricotta spread was very good. My entree of gnudi were light and feathery, but I think some might find the dish overly sweet. One of our dinner guests ordered the veal which he said was just OK. So, again a difficult review. We experienced very friendly and welcoming staff, but with some missteps, the room is beautiful but the food is not exceptional. The price point sets expectations that are simply not met. With some more attention to detail, I think Contessa could be a fine restaurant. read more

Contessa Boston's original location on The Newbury Boston's rooftop is an elevated gem in the city's dining scene. Get it... Elevated . The glamorous setting offers an exceptional Italian dining experience. The made daily burrata and squash carpaccio are musts. Forbes' endorsement as the place to swap sweatsuits for high heels or suits is spot on. Boston Common rightly crowned it the "crème de la crème," and Boston Magazine's praise for the terrific food, views, and an impressive Nebbiolo-centric wine list is well-deserved. read more

How kid friendly is this place?
Contessa has one section with a full bar area and the atmosphere is pretty high end. I wouldn't call it "kid friendly" and definitely not in the evening hours. If I had an infant in a car seat, I may consider it but definitely wouldn't think it…
What is the dress code?
I'd say casual dressy. It's a mostly fashionable crowd with many of the men wearing jackets. I wore a sport jacket with an open collar and was very comfortable. Err on the side of dressy and you'll fit right in. It's a great spot!
Are there vegetarian pastas?
They claim to and sometimes they do but they aren't consistent, or honest!
Where can you park when going to Contessa?
Newbury Street parking has a lot of movement. I'd look for parking on Newbury and general area... Boylston and cross streets. I've always found a space, and it seems easier now than before covid. Great spot, enjoy!
