OK, I've lived near this place for the past 15 years and have never gone in. Probably because it has always looked like the kind of place that Morty Seinfeld would go to for an Earlybird Special. But today I had a hankering for a Lox & Onion Omelette and I wanted to try a new place (usually Once Upon a Grill or Max & Benny's are my Lox & Omelette hangouts). So it hit me that Continental might be the perfect spot and I headed over. The service was quick - kinda loved that as I wasn't in the mood to linger. Prices were a bit less than what I would've paid at the other two joints, but there were some notable differences. The tomato juice was more watered down than what I am used to - usually TJ leaves traces of itself down the glass as one drinks it, but the juice at this place did not. Then there was the omelette. The ones they serve are of the "puffy" variety which simply means that three eggs look a lot bigger if you power blend them before you cook them. I also noticed that there was less lox than what I am accustomed to at other restaurants. The hashbrowns were good and a fair portion was offered. My "lightly toasted" English muffin came out a little charred - but it was soft rather than crisp, so no complaints there. Price was $13.46 pre-tip - cheaper than the other places - but as noted, not quite as good or as much. You get what you pay for. read more

Went there for Mother's day brunch today since they offered a buffet of lamb, prime rib and chicken along with a whole bunch of other stuff. So very disappointing. The prime rib which was the selling point, was pre-sliced in a warming tray and was super well done. The lamb was ok. The omelet station made omelets swimming in oil. This is another garden variety breakfast joint run by Italians or Greeks most likely Greeks. Not that t matters. Just a trend that I have noticed. The hostess was very nice , polite, and quick to seat: the service as a whole was good. Nothing that blew me off my seat as being fantastic just good service. I got the Protein Platter. 4 egg whites with tomatoes, and a huge slab of turkey sausage. I'd given this place a 4 star but the turkey sausage, while a huge portion, was pretty tasteless. My family usually visits this restaurant about once a month, so I picked up lunch today for us all and could not be more impressed. Their carry out service is so convenient! They still have their full menu available, and you can find their daily soups posted on their Facebook page. I was able to pay for our order over the phone and simply called the restaurant when I was outside. They deliver your meal directly to your trunk! You may not be able to sit at a table in the restaurant, but the quality of food is the same even while eating at your kitchen table. Same generous portions and same great quality! Five of us went for lunch on Sunday. I and another person ordered the Broasted Chicken Meal. It finally came after waiting and was huge with a dish of broccoli. The chicken was so dry both us us who ordered it couldn't eat it. The waiter argued with us about it and didn't offer us a replacement chicken nor any other choice. We consequently didn't eat anything but the side wing and chicken leg. It came with potato choice and a bowl of soup. The soup was great. Neither of us ate our potato as we were so frustrated by waiting no one would do anything to help us. We were waiting interminably long for our check. They removed the uneaten chicken and had he nerve to charge us for the soup and potato which was part of the meal. They then charged us ala crate and it was $15.00 for the soup and potato ( which was part of the meal ( and for a cup of coffee). The owner basically had come over and said there was nothing wrong with the chicken and that's the way the broaster machine makes it. Nasty and very unaccomodating! Needless to say we left hungry and felt taken. They should have at least replaced it with a salad or sandwich to go! So I left with an uneaten baked potato, a check for the whole thing for $15. and rude restaurant experience. read more

Absolutely love this place. Great service and amazing food! We love the soups, fries, and sandwiches- the monte cristo is a fave among our family. They also have the BEST rice pudding!! You always get an extremely generous amount of food too. My boyfriend can eat a lot and even he can't finish all of the food in one sitting, so we always have some left for later which is great. They offer curbside pickup right now which has been really convenient especially during Covid. We will continue to order from them regularly and I definitely recommend giving them a try. What happened to this place? We used to love coming here. Came here for my boyfriends birthday which happened to fall on Father's Day. I called ahead to see the wait time and I was told 15 mins. We showed up 10 mins after I called and we were told the wait is 30-45 mins. Are you kidding me ?! I'm not concerned about the wait but just be honest when people are calling in ! We decided to stay and when our name was called (are you ready for this??) she told us we can sit down but we can't order yet. I asked her how long until we can order and she said oh I don't know . 30 mins later.... still no server !! Once we were finally able to order our food came out cold !! I'm done with this place. You know it's a holiday- staff your restaurant better. I understand people may call out of work... have someone on call as a back up !! read more

Went to lunch here today. All went well until the food arrived. My daughter's soup had a struggling fly in it. She spooned it out to show the server who offered her soup to take home. Daughter turned her down on that - server said 'Oh well.' Oh well indeed!! My sandwich came with three hairs on the side. I pointed them out and was told that they looked about 'my length.' No, I said 'my hair is not that long'. 'Oh well', she said again. She declined my request for the Manager. Oh well!! is right. Never again. We will not be recommending the Continental to Anyone. A 1 is too good, but I can't give a negative number. When we paid, we were asked if we wanted to leave a tip - we told the cashier about our experience - she apologized. Dear Management at the Continental, Twice in the last month, I've had breakfast for dinner at your establishment. Both times, I've had the same server, a snarky, rude, middle-aged woman who prefers to bark at your customers rather than speak to them pleasantly. She's not happy if you're not ready to order the second you sit down, and let's be honest, with a menu the size of yours, a few minutes to look it over isn't too much to ask. Said server will question you when you say your order is wrong. She will LITERALLY tell you you ordered scrambled eggs because that's what she brought you, when in fact, you ordered over medium. And she wrote down over medium. She just doesn't care enough to give you the benefit of the doubt. Here's where you're really going to get upset, Management at the Continental. She's turning off your "open" sign and locking your doors 30 minutes prior to your businesses listed "closing" hours. Yes, that's right. I was in at 10pm on a Wednesday a few weeks ago, and at 10:30, she was barking at other servers to lock it up and turn off the sign so no one else could come in. Has business been down lately, Continental Management? This may be why. If I come in again and get this woman, AGAIN, I'd rather leave than sit through a meal where I'm treated like a leper. read more

My cousin took grandma and I here the morning we arrived into Chicago. They didn't open until 6am and it was only 5:45!! We had to wait outside in the car! We all laughed about this because obviously living in Vegas, we never have that problem. Our server was friendly, but very slow. She was the only one working this particular morning and was trying to serve more people than she could keep up with. Anyway I ordered the potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream. I was disappointed that what I received was not your traditional potato pancake, but an actual pancake with a weird filling on the inside that wasn't reminiscent of potato. I was surely disappointed in this and sent my meal back. The server offered to get me something else, but I was jet lagged and tired so I just ended up eating some of grandma's lox omelette which was really good. My cousin ordered the hopple popple and I wish I would have ordered that. A funny name, but a yummy dish consisting of scrambled eggs, green peppers, onions, salami and potatoes. This was my neighborhood spot with friends and family when I used to live in Wheeling. I really miss this place. Sometimes, my friend SJ and I will invent excuses just to swing by, such as "Hey let's go to IKEA ....but let's stop at the Continental for breakfast!" Or, "I have a coupon for Kohl's -there's one in Wheeling -let's go to the Continental!" Something like that. The food here is a 4 or 5 star experience, but the waitstaff here is a 1-2 star experience. I come here occasionally for brunch. The place is always busy whether its 10 am on Sunday or 2:30pm on Saturday. There generally isn't a wait to be seated. I love their breakfast menu. The corned beef hash skillet is one of my favorites. This past Sunday I came in with a friend and my wife. Our waittress was running around like crazy. I assume she was very busy from having so many tables. She took our drink orders while we looked over the menu. When she brought back our drinks, it was like she threw them on the table. I was amazed at how rude she was. Not even a here are your drinks, just dropped them and ran. I understand being busy, but to be rude to a table seems extremely counter productive. I would rather have to wait then be treated like this. When she came back to take our orders, she was grabbing the menus out of our hands mid-order. I couldn't believe it. My wife ordered a monte cristo sandwich. She specifically said that she wanted only turkey on the sandwich. When someone says they only want turkey, that means only turkey. No cheese, no ham. I ordered a spinach omelet with ham and cheddar cheese. My friend ordered a denver omelet with cheddar cheese and a side of corned beef hash. Our food was delivered, and as soon as it was on the table she was off. She didn't ask if we needed anything else. Luckily she quickly came back to refill my friend's coffee, but in her rush she spilled coffee on his freshly cooked omelet. He was hungry, and it wasn't much coffee but it was still pretty ridiculous for wait staff to treat customers like this. My wife's monte cristo sandwich came out with cheese, and my wife was afraid to send it back. I flagged down the waittress and asked if she could have them remake it with out cheese. The waittress immediately said you didn't say no cheese. I calmly said she said to only put turkey on the sandwich. She said ok and kind of stomped off. Even if we said make sure to put extra cheese on it if we weren't happy about the sandwich and asked to have it remade, you should just do it. We weren't complaining or upset, my wife is lactose intolerant and can't eat cheese. Once we were finished eating, the waitress came back to our table to give us the check. She also made a half-hearted apology about her service because she was so busy. I appreciate the effort, but it was too little, too late. Luckily, the food here is always enjoyable otherwise this place wouldn't stand a chance of staying open. read more

The service at this restaurant is great. Everyone is really helpful and very friendly. So I feel really bad for giving it only 2 stars but the food is not good. I ordered the corned beef hash skillet with pancakes. The skillet was okay but had a lot more hash browns than corned beef and the pancakes didn't have any taste. I went with two friends who also said their fried chicken and burger were bland. The atmosphere is really nice and friendly so if you are just looking to relax and chat with a cup of coffee (but no food!) I would suggest this place for you. read more

Why doesn't this delightful place have more reviews? I gotta say, since moving away from the 'burbs....well, I miss this place. I sometimes wake up in a cold sweat, having dreamt of their amazing soups (their cream of chicken with rice is just perfect. So is their matzoh ball!). I just adore Greek-owned family restaurants, and this is one of my favorites, by far. You can always rely on friendly service (the owner always seems to be there, and he's a great guy!), HUGE portions, and a free show. Where do these customers come from? They're a riot. Overheard, coming from an Alan Alda look-alike at the table next to us: "So, I was at this BRIS last weekend......" Fortunately, I tuned out after hearing the word "bris", as our food came up just then..but you get the idea. This place has personality! Besides the filling, delicious soups, you can't go wrong with any of their sandwiches. Burgers, French Dip, Hot Turkey..they're all gigantic and full o' flavor. Their fries are always crispy and flavorful,too. Oh Continental. The gem of sleepy Buffalo Grove! I'll be back. No one does soup like you do. I walk in and get greeted by a young girl she says hi. Then cuts me off and is talking across the way and says "don't freak out." Then she was like sorry how many? So we get seated and our waitress is taking my order and I ask her what can I put in an omelet? And she says anything..so I start naming stuff and I asked what else can we put, and rudely she says you can put whatever you want as if I was burdening her. They recently took over the former martial arts space next door and made a private party room...very swanky and the bathrooms are amazing. I thnk the menu is new, prices went up and now they have the build your own salad...i think they only had build your own burger before. The I'm-a-coffee-shop Pie Case has been removed from the front. There are now two upholstered benches for waiting diners, so you don't get a woman drooling over your shoulder for a roll and butter (see one of my previous reviews). Booths are spacious for fat asses, like my spouse and I. Server was attentivie. I did overhear a snarky comment about "talent show moms", not sure who said it. My daughter was in the private room for the variety show cast party. No, it was NOT a talent show. I take offense at that comment. But other than that, good experience. read more

This is a nice family restaurant that is very popular on Sunday mornings. They even have a balloon artist on some Sunday's to make balloon animals for kids. The service is good as is the food and the prices are fair. I haven't eaten lunch or dinner there but if you want to go somewhere casual and be waited on this isn't a bad option. Too bad you have to give it a star at all I WOULD GIVE IT NO STARS. We went there yesterday because our family was getting together. One of the persons in our party said, not that place it is terrible but I said lets go it for the family and I vaguely remembered it being ok. (must have been the quick breakfast I had back then) because last night nothing was good or right about it. First we asked questions about the menu and the waitress did not know the answer to any of them, mostly common questions like is this burger in this picture on the menu or from the make your own menu side, and she said Don't know never saw one like that come out of the kitchen. Then we asked if you could get a side of potato pancakes and she said no you get 3 in an order then she said wait and looked and said for 6.99 you get 4 but that is a meal. Then she said let me check to see if you can get a side order but never told us if you could or not. This comes up again later. Then one of us orders a ruben sandwich with the potato cakes and about 15 minutes later she comes back and says WE ARE OUT OF RYE BREAD. Yikes, not only out of rye bread but connected to Dominick's next door. Can't someone run over and get rye bread? Then she says you can order something else. So my friend orders grilled cheese and soup instead and the waitress says you still want potato pancakes right and my friend says no I changed my order and the waitress rolls her eyes TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT OUR WAITRESS WAS NOT THE PROBLEM AND ENDED UP TAKING GOOD CARE OF US BUT THE WHOLE THING WAS COMICAL. When the food arrived the grilled cheese was not buttered or crispy and the cheese must be from generic generic generic cheese processor because it tasted bad and was not melted. The soup tasted like dish water, I got a burger with canadian bacon that tasted like rubber and the fries were soggy and full of grease. My daughter ordered spaghetti and the sauce tasted WORSE THAN Chef Boy-Ar-Dee. What an improvement! I was here recently and it seems like the restaurant has gone back to how it used to be when it first opened. The quality and taste of food has improved immensely since my last visit last year in November. I ordered the chicken gyro that came with fries and soup. The matzo ball soup was more flavorable than last time. The matzo itself was a little insipid, but overall the soup was good. The chicken gyros were very good. The meat was tender with a nice added seasoning. The fries were done well this time, not too greasy. A nice ending to the meal was a chocolate shake. Their shakes are old fashioned made with real ice cream. The restaurant itself has been updated since last time I was there. What a difference. It looks clean and more modern. The addition that is used for private parties is beautiful. Perfect for birthday celebrations, anniversaries, confirmations, etc. The owner himself is always pleasant. As I am new to the area, I visit many local businesses. Tonight I tried The Continental Restaurant. I ordered a Swiss cheese hamburger. My server, who was absolutely not at fault, asked me how I would like it cooked. I ordered medium. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd burgers all came out well done. The "manager on duty" decided to argue with me, and told me that the cook said that they were all cooked medium. She even brought out 2 of the 3 burgers that I had sent back "as proof that they had pink in them." I went there for a burger and a dinner on the patio, not to argue with the MOD. What was an old standby has gone down the tubes. I went twice in the past few months, both times suffered from terrible service and below mediocre food. This most recent time, a simple order of pancakes, soup, and a hot dog took at least 30 minutes to prepare, with no sign of the waitress during the long wait. Im mere minutes away, so ive had food from this place a bunch of times...and I'm shocked to see 5 stars given out on this place. It's a straight Greek joint that piles on free old bread and inedible soups to your order to make you feel like you got some great value....breakfast is decent, but hardly cheap as some suggest(10dollar for an omelette with toast), but it's good and comes with hash browns. As far as dinner or lunch, i suggest you give it a pass. The food is underseasoned and just not very good even if the portions are somewhat generous. Some of the people who have spent decades in the burbs obviously can't even tell what is half decent fare anymore. Tip: If you are like me and like your Hashbrowns crispy, then order them EXTRA crispy when ordering. Usually its mushy and without bite at all. The omelettes are huge....definitely splitable...
