They say you get what you pay for. I'm this case, it was true for 1lb of king crab, potatoes, sausage and corn $50+. The crab was BAD, mushy, had a terrible odor almost like ammonia. My husband and I saw this place as we passed by once. We decided to give it a try after reading the great reviews. Unfortunately it was not what we expected. I ordered to-go, 2 lbs of whole shrimp in cajun sauce -medium spice level and honestly it was disappointing. The sauce and shrimp were flavorless; it tasted like pure oil. I wish I could have better things to say but it wasn't flavorful. I'll probably give them another try later and hope for a better outcome. At the moment my review of 3 stars is due to the flavor. Horrible experience the third time around. Had dinner with friends and they waited over 25 minutes for their order of fish and chips after we had all received our food (total of 6 of us). Someone else in our party ordered fish and chips at the same time we all placed our order and they received their food at the same time we got our cajun seafood. For some reason 2 orders had to wait longer. The sauce in the bag for the cajun seafood was not tasty and flavorful as it has been in the past. Very oily and not as thick. I'm in no hurry to go back. This place is in a very "shady" part of Bakersfield, but it's worth the risk! Been here 2 or 3 times with a friend, and the food is SPECTACULAR! The tables are covered with white "butcher" paper, so you dump your food from clear, hot plastic bags onto the table and dig in barbarian style. First, you order at the counter and "suit up!" Customers are given bibs and cracking/digging tools after they order, rolls of paper towels are on the tables, and gloves and condiments are available in each of 2 dining areas. The service was great! The food was great! Only reason for the 4 stars is because of the location. Location works for a typical lunch hour, but not for dinner. And let's be honest. Just like my first experience, the family is very hospitable. 5 stars for being friendly and personable. Where this visit fell flat is the amount, quality and price for it. I ordered 1 pound of King Crab. It was sparse compared to my last visit. The 1 pound looked so huge last time...well, not to be this time. Very tiny. Also, the quality tasted as though it was lacking. Not sure if they switched the brand of legs or what, but I noticed. Tasted old, some were overcooked. Lackluster. And at $17.99 per pound, which was the the market price, I have to apologize here, but I would rather be served consistently fresh for a few bucks more, somewhere else. The clam chowder was watery instead of a chowder thick broth. I hope that the chowder was just having a bad day and is the thick base on my next visit. The one really big drawback is the north wing eating area--hopefully at some point they can begin to add some charm It feels like my aunt Bertha's kitchen. ----------------- What did go right: The staff did acknowledge my concerns and very pleasantly too. This is a fun new spot to try in Bako. I love a low country boil and think this is a great addition to Bakersfield. It is located by an underpass on Union so by definition, it's in a bit of a "sketchy" area but don't let that deter you. Eat local! There is parking all around the building in the lot. The inside is casual with multiple booths which are best suited for parties of 4-6 with one additional person sitting in an individual chair at the end. There is one section with a larger table which might seat more people. Once you enter the restaurant, you put your name down at the counter. Once your name is called, be ready to put in your order. You will be given a number and then seated. Your order will be brought to your table when it's ready. Each table is equipped with a roll of paper towels and white butcher paper which is changed between patrons. You also get your very own "Grab Some Crab" disposable bib. We ordered a pound of shelled shrimp and the king crab in the Cajun Medium and the Garlic Butter, respectively. Both were delicious. There was tons of minced garlic in the Garlic Butter sauce. All bags come with a small corn on the cob, a potato and some slices of sausage. Separate sides can be ordered ala carte like fries, loaf of bread etc. Drinks are your typical sodas with free refills. I was really happy to find out that Thursdays are Thirsty Thursdays here and drinks are 2 for the price of 1. The food was amazing. I honestly felt like my dining experience compared to awesome places I dine at when on vacation. The owner (I'm assuming that is who works the counter) has a cool personality. The prices are high, but for the type of food it is, it's costly to keep the quality high and I'm willing to spend a little more for great quality and taste. I've eaten Crab In A Bag multiple times but have waited to submit my review....the reason for that is the first few times I've enjoyed CIB I've had the same dish: the pound of Peeled Shrimp with sausage and corn, medium heat. Only recently did I branch out and try the pound of mussels with sausage and corn, Hot. And in my opinion, it's delicious!! The seafood is always tender and not over cooked. The corn and sausage are beautiful little sides to accompany the main dish. I really like that while the broth that the seafood is cooked in is extremely flavorful ( I often treat it as soup at the end of the repast, sipping it while a lovely slow burnin sensation coats the mouth), it doesn't overpower the flavor of the sides or the seafood.
