We arrived Sunday, January 26, 2025, at about 1:30-45pm. This review does not reflect our server whatsoever. He was a super nice tall slim young gentleman and I feel horrible I don't remember his name. He had very intricate braids in his hair and he was the only positive thing I can say. As soon as we entered the building, we strolled through the gift shop for a few minutes, then we went to the hostess stand and asked for a table. There were two female employees, both had dark hair and one was wearing a pink zip up hoodie. Boy did she ever have a mouth on her. She was complaining and cursing about her shift and in front of the whole line of people said "they f*cking gave my shift to f*cking (whoever)" and we (party of 4) all stopped and dropped our jaws and looked at each other trying to figure out if what just happened was really happening. The other woman that was up there barely acknowledged us and then we were escorted to the dining room. The restaurant and gift shop and bathrooms were all clean, and our very nice waiter/server came to take our drink orders. He brought them promptly and then took our food orders. I ordered the hash brown casserole shepherds pie. This was my very first time in a Cracker Barrel and have heard over and over again how I "have to have the hash brown casserole! It's the best" and I wanted to try other things as well so that dish seemed the best choice. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak with white gravy, mashed potatoes and a cup of the chicken and dumpling soup. When our food was delivered, the hash brown casserole topping on my shepherds pie was so SO burnt, I couldn't believe it. It seemed like they were trying to make toffee/brittle/jerky with it. I peeled the top off and saw raw shreds of potato under it. Then I just decided to eat around it. I'm not sure if this was normal, but there was a dollop of mashed potato goop on the bottom but it was more like raw dough. The texture of it was so gross I couldn't even eat it. The sour cream on top had curdled and now I feel like it was bad. My husbands potatoes were like paste, the soup was like unseasoned yellow gelatin and he was only able to get down about 1/2 of his chicken fried steak. I tried a bite of his CFS and couldn't figure out what the weirdness of it I tasted was. Then I tried it again and I couldn't even pretend it was good. It's like it was frozen, cooked, put back in the fridge, and cooked again. The breading didn't have any chance of staying affixed to the steak. And I'm aware that this restaurant uses frozen items and nothing is made from scratch but I figured it would have at least been better quality. No plate for hard biscut and cold gravey. The small dry sausage was hard and dry same as ham. The chicken noodle soup was like gravey no broth. The house salad excellent. The pancakes were decent. The waitress was rude and manager took breakfast away from a person actually eating it because I complained about not getting a plate to set the biscuits and graveyard on instead of the basket. Phenomenal Service from Armand at Cracker Barrel! We had an absolutely amazing experience during our visit to Cracker Barrel today thanks to our exceptional server, Armand. From the moment we sat down, he delivered the kind of service you rarely find -- attentive, thoughtful, and genuinely caring. Armand anticipated our needs before we even voiced them. He brought extra napkins, condiments, and drink refills without us ever having to ask. Came here for my mom's birthday lunch, so we ordered a lot of food! It was my parents first time, so it took a while to order, but our server Chris, was really patient. I wanted to try the Broccoli Cheese Casserole, which was advertised for this season, but they were out of it. I was a bit bummed since I was looking forward to it. Not sure if they "ran out" for the day, but to give you an idea of the time of day of this visit, it was lunchtime on a Sunday in January. To put things in perspective, it was not too busy. The service was good, food was decent, and the ambiance was homey. I think what would've made the visit better or even stellar would be to include dipping sides with the chicken or fries, as they seemed a bit dry. Came here early Sunday so no wait. It's very conveniently located off the freeway so it was the perfect stop before we headed back to LA. I ordered the steak and egg hash brown casserole and wow! It's so flavorful and delicious! Pancakes were fluffy and had a sweet crispy layer on top! Biscuits and gravy was good but gravy needed more pepper and flavor. My only gripe is the menu calls for thick bacon and it was super thin and flavorless. Service was fast and friendly and I like the peg game to pass time before the meal comes. I gave 3 stars because I've had good food there and I love the gift shop. However, they have the worst salads I've ever had, so I'll avoid those in the future. The last one I had - the house salad - was clumps of what appeared to be almost the core of iceberg lettuce. I pulled apart some of the leaves so I could eat them. It had one crouton, and no cheese. Hard clumps and tasteless. I told the waitress about it and she said she didn't make it. The baked potato wasn't very warm. The beans were soggy. Breakfast is good here but dinner is hit and miss. The waitress was unfriendly but other waitresses have been okay. I should have said take the salad back. When asked about how the dinner was I said it was hardly edible so they subtracted the price of the tea. In the future I'll probably just go for breakfast and browse the gift shop. read more

Stopped at this Cracker Barrel as we were traveling from NorCal to SoCal. I've been to dozens of different locations in various states. Well, I'll have to say that the Bakersfield store on California Ave. was superior. The service was great (that's the usual), but the chicken and dumplings were hands-down the best I've ever had, large dumplings, just the right amount of fresh gravy, and tender chunks of chicken. Finally got a chance to stop by last weekend and give this place a try. The staff was a bit slow and not super welcoming but they did get us seated fairly quickly. The biscuit benny was really good, I enjoyed that and it's something I'd definitely come back for. The food came out pretty quick and everything was hot. My dad really enjoyed his pancakes as well and liked the hot syrup bottle they give you with it. My wife didn't love the grits, I tried them and they were definitely overcooked. We had really poor service. The waitress didn't get our order right and gave us attitude when we said it wasn't what we'd ordered. My husband and I each ordered a soda and halfway through the meal we needed a refill. We finally got her attention after several minutes and asked her for refills but she never brought them. It was our grandson's birthday and she'd told him early on he would get a dessert but she also never brought that...even when we reminded her. We finally left, thirsty and annoyed. When I asked the checkout person if they could take the sodas off the ticket because we'd never gotten refills he said he had to ask his manager. When the manager came he said he couldn't do it without asking someone above him. I said that this was all ridiculous and I just paid and left upset and frustrated. read more

I'm surprised Yelp hasn't tossed me off the program. My wife and I are out running errands, getting things done, when we realize we are starving. I never remember to take the photo before I start devouring the food. Sorry! We had a gift card for Cracker Barrel on California Avenue. It's right off of Fwy. 99. They seated us right away. It was 10:30 am and they were still serving breakfast. I learned later you can get breakfast anytime. My wife orders pancakes and I order the Bacon n' Egg Hashbrown casserole without onions. Our waitress brought us some biscuits and gravy to start. The service is friendly and accommodating. It's a "whatever you want" kind of place. The food came quickly. I was a little disappointed that they didn't "hold the onions". Luckily, they were fried onion rings and very easy to pick off. The servings are huge. It was a really good value. My wife and I could have easily split a breakfast. If you're hungry this is a good place for you. There is also a country store as part of the restaurant. Always been a fan of this chain restaurant. Been wanting a Cracker Barrel restaurant in my hometown for years now. It has been over a year since they opened in Bakersfield, and we finally got an opportunity to give them a try. This branch looks like all the other ones we've visited all over the country. I like those rocking chairs sitting on their patio outside. The country store is cool, but I was disappointed they did not have my favorite candy bar that I've always been able to purchase at their other old country stores. The decor inside is like all the others as well. I like it. We were seated right away. Don't know if they get busy, but there were plenty of available tables on a Saturday at Noon time. How was the service? Our server was alright. The cashiers could be better. One person was assisting the customer ahead of me, but was talking a lot to the customer even after the transaction was finished. I was waiting at least 5 minutes for them to finish talking. There were about 3 other employees behind the counter, but none of them assisted me. They were having their own conversation among themselves. How was the food? Started with the Biscuit Beignets. That was underwhelming. It tasted stale, and it was hard. Good thing it was free for signing up on their App. I was so excited to order their pancakes! So, I ordered my favorite entree which is Momma's Pancake Breakfast. It comes with (3) buttermilk pancakes, eggs, bacon or sausage, and their homemade syrup. Never been too impressed with their eggs, bacon, or sausage which is all pretty ordinary. Have always loved their pancakes, though. Oh I was so DISAPPOINTED with the pancakes I received. They did not taste nearly as good as the ones I've had at their other locations. There had always been a bit of crispiness to the edges of the buttermilk pancakes that I've always enjoyed. The pancakes I received that day was not like that. It tasted like buttermilk pancakes that I could get at McDonald's. Due to this disappointing experience, it is doubtful that I will be a regular at my hometown Cracker Barrel. Maybe we will give them another opportunity, but it will be awhile. Woke up this morning not wanting to make breakfast and asked the hubby if he wanted to give the new Cracker Barrel a shot. I figured it's been a few months and I've heard a couple of good reviews in the last couple of weeks. The hubby said Let's Go, so Off we went! On the way there I thought Oh lord it's Sunday. We're never going to get in this place. When we got into the parking lot it was packed but not crazy. A lady in front of me put in her name for a party of six and the girl told her the wait would be from 1.5 hours to 2 hours! The lady turned around and walked off lol! When I put in for 2 she said 20 minutes. The hubby and I went inside the gift shop and bought loads of stocking stuffers for family members. I definitely made sure to get some pancake mix and biscuit/dumpling mix. After about 10-15 minutes my name was called letting me know it was time to Feast! I've said it time and time again, but I do not understand restaurants that serve breakfast but do not give my non-pork options! This time, they do offer a couple, but they would not allow me to exchange. So instead of trying Grandma's Sampler, I had to Build my Own Homestyle Breakfast and add pancakes. I went with the Premium meat option of the Hamburger Steak with a garlic glaze and scrambled eggs with grits and cheese. The hubby decided to give the Grandpa's Country Fried Breakfast a the country fried steak and biscuits and gravy. Overall, the food was meh...except for the pancakes, they were amazing! I was so excited to try this American staple but I am sadly very disappointed... This place was really hyped up for me. I love breakfast! But sadly I don't think Cracker Barrel delivered. The only visually appealing dishes in our party had was the Homestyle Chicken and the Chicken Pot Pie. The pot pie had a good crust, and the chicken was fried very well I must say. However I am disappointed in all the other dishes we had. The Country Fried Steak barely had any gravy, and the eggs weren't cooked to our varied preferences. I'm glad we had salt and pepper cause we definitely had to season most of our food more. This includes the Chicken N' Dumplins, the grits, and the biscuits and gravy. I felt so sorry for my friend that ordered the Grandma's Sampler (see photo below).. Everything about it just looked very depressing, and sadly did not fill him up. Gotta Say, I'm disappointed in you Cracker Barrel. We've been waiting for a long time to "Finally!" Try the legendary spot, and what we got was not Legendary at all; it was bad. Real bad. We ordered the new Fresh Berry French Toast Bake, I ordered the Build your own Homestyle Breakfast, plus I paid an extra $4.99 for a side of sausage. We also ordered The Biscuit Beignets and lastly they have cinnamon apples "reminiscent of Boston Markets" which were very good! But these apples still had the skin on some of them. Oh and to drink, half gallon of OJ. Now let's break it down. The French toast 1. Did NOT look like the picture, it was not a solid block, but more like they tried to braid it and then cook it, mind you, it came out undercooked and had a weird taste. Automatically a "No". Especially when it was $12 dollars. The Build your Own Breakfast was "ok". Eggs were good, I asked for the bacon to be "crispy", cause they have an option on the app to do so; they were not. I got them very soft, almost like they were just thrown on a grill for a sec then pulled off. Plus the side of sausages were "ok" but not warm. The biscuit Beignets were "meh". not worth the price, just tasted like mini biscuits covered in powdered sugar with a side sauce for dunking. better off sticking with the apples. I would say the Peach Cobbler, but we didn't get that this time, the way it's looking, might never get to experience it lol. Apples were the best! nice and warm, soft and delicious, but they do have skin on some of them, so you get a little bit of bite every couple of scoops into it. not bad. The best thing to both of us was the Hashbrown Casserole! Yum! Now that thing was delicious! Cheesy, soft, a little added crunch from the hashbrown. Delicious! But Overall I gotta say, this was a huge let down! The Ambiance we couldn't tell you, cause we got curbside, but even that was something we wouldn't miss. Parked on the side of the building. Showed up a few minutes after our pickup time and still waited an extra 10min and we got to witness a dozen cops handling a situation a parking lot over lol. Cracker Barrel is a place for Bakersfield. I have visited this place in other states and always wondered why we didn't have one. Well, we don't have to worry about that anymore. It's a pretty classic look and all of the CB's I've visited look the same. Love how you walk through a retail store to get to the food. We did not have to wait to be seated, but it's nice to know there will be a great activity should we ever need to wait. There have been a few new places that have opened in Bakersfield, so we decided to head over to CB for breakfast on a Sunday before church. We arrived around 8:30am and had no problem getting seated right away. They open at 7am. Nice to know they close at 10. That's unusual since most places tend to close at 9. Our waitress was friendly and took good care of us. Everyone was kind and looked as if they enjoyed working at CB. The biscuits that come before your meal are so amazing. Our food came out quickly and the wait staff was concerned that we got everything we ordered and the way we liked it. Tons of food. I will likely not order something for myself next time and just eat from other's plates. Very good...all of it. read more
