Came in by myself to grab a drink and waited near the host stand to make sure and let staff know i was going to the bar (with covid I like to be very clear with what's ok) and was completely ignored by the longer haired server standing there. Like no eye contact, no hello, nothing. Definitely a first for me. As I asked him if I could sit at the bar he barked back at me no! and pointed at a table... ok. Server who took my drink order was nice thankfully, as I tipped her appropriately. Sucks because I live down the street and was hoping this could be my neighborhood bar, guess I don't fit the mold or something. Summary: Undercooked meat and long knotted hairs tucked under the lettuce. Poor service. Tasty barramundi though. Feel like taking a chance with your health?! Came here Friday night after a playdate: party of five, two moms and three kiddos. The place was busy, especially the bar. We were seated quickly with boosters and crayons and paper to keep the kids busy. The moms ordered the barramundi upon our server's recommendation; the kiddos all wanted burgers. Our orders arrived...two orders of delicious barramundi and two burgers....for three children. The server explained she thought we only ordered two burgers. Well we ordered one burger first and then as she made her way around the table added two more which would make three... The kids were hungry and getting ready to throw an all out tantrum so we focused on triaging the situation, offering fries all around and slicing one burger in half while the server put in the order for the third child at the table. As annoying as that hiccup was, it turns out that it was a good thing all of this happened because the burger I was about to serve my kids was hot pink on the inside. Cripes! I asked for it to be cooked more thoroughly, it's not a steak after all and these are kiddos. The second burger arrived with the first one. My friend told me to slice open the second burger just in case. I thought there's no way the second burger has issues after we sent the first one back but to sate my friend I sliced it open too. That burger was even more rare than the first - hot pink and jelly consistency in the middle. Blech! All I could think was that the cook was intentionally trying to give my children e. coli. We sent that one back too. The server tried to argue that the burgers were in fact medium well. Hmm..they couldn't have both been medium well as the consistency was not the same and according to every other restaurant I have been to in SF, NYC, Chicago and LA, and a visual chart accessible via Google, the burgers were medium rare and rare. Who serves a rare burger to a child? As we finished up eating and stacked the plates I spotted a tangle of long hairs (something you might find in the corner of the bathroom after blowdrying) on my daughter's plate between leaves of lettuce. Absolutely disgusting!! I almost lost my dinner on the table. It's a good thing my kids don't eat lettuce on their burgers. I didn't bother bringing it to management's attention. The kids were at their breaking point and the food was already consumed. Not even money back could have made us whole at that point. I am NEVER coming back and I'll be surprised if they continue to pass health inspections. Thanks for your response Mike. The burgers were corrected/recooked at the restaurant. Had a really good evening having dinner at Crogan's. Really great atmosphere, everybody at the bat seemed to be having a great time. Noise level was perfect, staff very cordial and professional. It's really easy to come to Crogan's. If you're looking for a place to have a drinks on evenings/weekends or looking for a place to eat, it's a pretty good bet Crogan's will have you covered. If you've got more than three people and trying to agree on a place to go, they've got a bit of everything. And it's the cornerstone of Montclair Village, so it's easy to find and park and such. We waited for 10 minutes in the dining room and NO ONE came over to take our order or at least offer a glass of water. The wait person ignored us repeatedly as I know he saw us. Trying to find a venue where we could host a large party had been frustrating and challenging until I contacted Crogan's in Montclair. After contacting numerous local restaurants, and either receiving very delayed or no responses, I was happy to speak with Mike, who was so responsive and accommodating to our needs. He couldn't have been any nicer or understanding in helping with the menu and allowing our party in the back private room. The variety of menu items we chose gave our guests many options, the calamari and Brussel sprouts appetizers very tasty , and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal ( the fish tacos were a big hit!) and drinks. The service was very attentive and non intrusive, and a big shout out in particular to Eduardo for his excellent service and Carole as well. Highly recommend to anyone looking to host an event! I have been coming to Crogan's for a a few month's now. I have always enjoyed the friendly service and the food has always been better than top-notch. Rocky's chicken is a consistent favorite of mine, and don't forget to try the chipotle mussels as well, you won't be disappointed. Had a late dinner last night glad that the kitchen was still open. My wife ordered the Fish & chips commented probably the best she's had I even tried a little didnt taste fishy at all to me and all fish taste fishy to me. We both shared the french onion soup very delicious For me I had the Flat Iron steak little surprised for the added charge from brussel sprouts to green beans but all in all enjoyed the food and would go back if in the area We also took some carrot cake to go good but seemed to have a pumpkin spice in it, thought it took away from everything, but would order it again! read more

Crogan's was a place that had a horrible rap for years and I've stayed away for quite some time. Yesterday was the first time back and its just ok. My beer was great (you really need to try hard to screw that up) but the burger was just ok. I ordered the Crogan burger medium rare and following the trend of all restaurants to overcook meat, it was closer to medium. Seared outside and almost devoid of pink center. The lettuce was just a huge piece of green leaf that had a huge rib and very hard to get onto the burger. Fries were a bit greasy. So would I go back? Maybe. Would it be my first choice? Probably not. I think the burger at the Montclair Driving Range are better and more reasonably priced and probably more consistent. read more

I don't even know where to start. I've tried to talk to the owner; Mike Williams, but he will only speak to my husband. I have several friends, and myself who have had problems with being groped or verbally attacked and when help was sought from the barstaff it was ignored. (at least one time it was the bartender that was doing the unwelcomed touching). I also had my wedding reception there in 2017. The bartender was hammered to the point that he was serving my program sober friends who asked for soda water full pints of vodka. That is beyond messed up, but not important enough for him to apologize or even speak to me at all? My very close friend relapsed badly that night because he asked for water and got Vodka. Mike refused to speak to me or apologize for that too. And I paid him $10,000 for the favor. read more

I've gone here many times to eat, usually at dinner and I enjoy the food. This review will mostly be about tonight's dinner. Tonight I got the House Walnut Apple Starter Salad and their French Onion Gratinee Soup. Usually I get a regular house salad that most restaurants have however Crogan's changed their menu since the last time I've gone. I was a little disappointed to see that they changed their menu because I enjoyed their old house salad. However, I decided to try their new house salad and it did not disappoint. This salad had caramelized walnuts and apple slices (hence the name). I enjoyed this, especially the apples. They were extremely fresh. The salad usually comes with a vinaigrette dressing however I am very picky with vinaigrette dressings so I decided to get ranch. The vinaigrette was probably good but I am more comfortable with the ranch. I enjoyed the salad very much. (Pictures attached, also a side note, the salad doesn't seem to have a lot of dressing in the picture however when I ate the salad I thought it had the perfect amount of ranch dressing on it.) Now onto the French onion soup. I LOVE their French onion soup. It is probably the best French onion soups that I've ever had! Usually I keep my meals safe and order the same thing when I find something I enjoy at restaurants but with their new and improved menu, I saw a couple other items I wouldn't mind adventuring out and trying. I also got the brownie for dessert and that was delicious as well. It tasted a little more cakey than a regular brownie to me but I enjoyed it. The flavor was amazing. Sadly after 30 years I am bidding farewell to one of my favorite hangouts. Not because of the food which is always great, or the service especially from the wonderful Tyler. However a dear friend of mine was "86ed" from here because she took a picture on Sunday. She was verbally assaulted by the manager, her food and beverage were taken away and she was told to leave. Upon our arrival last evening we were instantly accosted by a very rude young lady informed my friend that she would not be served and was never to return. In a immediate phone conversation with the owner my friend was told that there had been other instances of inappropriate behavior by her and that these and the picture taking on Sunday culminated in this decision. Well this is all preposterous as my friend is a prominent member of the community and one of the most gracious women I know. Hmmmmmmm, I wonder if it's because she's black. Thanks for the memories. I ordered the fried chicken dinner delivered to my home. It came on time but I honestly have to say that it was the worst fried chicken dinner I have ever had. The outside was burnt and the inside wasn't completely done. I have ordered from here several times and never has the food been so poorly done. We've been told by Crogan's their breading has not changed but we can't help but wonder.....it just doesn't seem the same, now having quite a bit of what tastes like cornmeal in it. Fried chicken stays juicy but since we don't like the batter, we wouldn't order this again. Haven't been here in years and decided to stop in after a morning at the local park with the kids. After a longer than expected wait for our brunch dishes my huevos rancheros eggs were hard boiled consistency and my friends omelette looked like it was cooked the day before and sat in an oven. We asked for our dishes to be redone and within 10 minutes we had fresh plates with properly cooked eggs. ( how hard is that?) We were the only ones in the dining room. It had to be one of the most boring and bland huevos rancheros I ever had. No salsa, a dallop of tomato sauce on top along with shredded lettuce. No cheese and about a teaspoon of beans. Come on now, we are in California and this is in Montclair! We were told they were out of jack cheese for the omelette and also out of pizza on the kids menu, seriously? The only highlight was their $7.50 Bloody Mary. And the waitress was very sweet and trying her best. With all the great restaurants in the east bay I'm amazed this place is still going. read more

It's time this restaurant closed their doors. It was the worse experience last night. They charge the prices of a high end dining establishment and their quality is like fast food on 80% of what we ate. I'll start with what was good from others in my group. Positive: The drinks, calamari and fish and chips, beet salad Negative: Stained old dirty menus, Shepard's pie with glutinous and full of flour or corn starch. Felt like it was made days ago, Rocky chicken was raw around the bone and all the veggies on my plate were soggy and over cooked, salmon was frozen,tasteless and tasted like below average supermarket fish, shrimp Avacado salad was overpowered with a mayo sauce on the shrimp and the salad dressing was something that they good in a bottle from a food service company. They are used to bulk cooking. There is no chef, just a bunch of line cooks who make the same inferior food every day. I would never go back here and I suggest you stay away too. read more

I'm disgusted at how rudely, insultingly & shockingly horrible I was just treated tonight by restaurant manager ANNIE. Here's what happened. I placed a Door Dash order & scheduled it for delivery for the next day. Crogan's cancelled the order w/ no explanation. I called to inquire. Annie explained it's their policy to not accept advance orders. She gave some lame reason like they may run out of ingredients/menu items. I asked for an exception since the order was placed, accepted & my credit card billed. She said absolutely no because it's the owner's policy & she can't authorize exceptions. I shared my disappointment that as a member of management she's not empowered to fix my issue to ensure I have a positive customer experience. She said I should take it up with the owner Mike & abruptly hung up on me. I called back to share my frustration about being hung up on & my overall dismal customer experience. That's when Annie came allllll the rest of the way unglued. She yelled something like "you were rude saying I wasn't empowered.....blah blah blah." 1 - It's ridiculously Crogan's doesn't accept "PAID FOR" orders for next day delivery via Door Dash. 2 - It's unbelievable they can't order sufficient quantities to ensure they don't run out of anything. 3 - Crogan's should not be on Door Dash setting false expectations that they accept advance orders when they don't. I'll be complaining to Door Dash next. 4 - And I don't even know where to begin with ANNIE. She absolutely ZERO: - emotional intelligence - ability to effectively resolve customer issues in a respectful, diplomatic manner - problem solving ability - courage to stand up to the owner to advocate for the customer - self-confidence to empower herself to create effective solutions for the customer - credibility w/ the owner to challenge policies that hinder customer satisfaction & influence a change I'm calling Mike tomorrow. Stay tuned for an update on how he responds to the above feedback I'm going to share. Hopefully Mike can make this situation right & not worse giving me more ammunition for Yelp. In the meantime, STAY AWAY...FAR FAR FAR AWAY....FROM CROCAN'S!!!!!! *****UPDATE!!!***** I'm happy to report Mike "made it right." He sent me a message inviting me to call, which I did. He sincerely apologized over and over for my bad experience & Annie's behavior. Mike explained Door Dash doesn't carry over orders from one day to the next, which is why they stopped taking advance orders. He also shares he thought advance ordering had been disabled from Door Dash, & was surprised to learn that functionality was still enabled. Mike agreed to provide gift cards as a gesture of good will. I'm truly appreciate Mike contacting me, taking accountability, agreeing Annie's behavior was unacceptable & making it right with an apology & gift cards. Thanks Mike!!!! read more

A friend introduced me to Crogans in January of this year for my birthday. It was my first time dining here. I was amazed at how delicious the food was. I went to New Orleans for a month and while there, in the city of fabulous food, I found myself thinking of and discussing this restaurant. I ordered through DoorDash four days after returning to Oakland. Once again I was amazed at how wonderful the meal was. They even threw in a thank you gift for ordering. Such class. A friend and I go to Crogan's about once a year because we like the idea of the place--older people go there, it's quiet and the food is supposed to be reliable. It's an older man's pub, basically, and we're not old so we go there. It's ironic. Plus I have a soft spot in my heart for Montclair. So we go and try to take it easy. First, the good: atmosphere is quiet, classy. Service is always good. The Guinness tastes like it should. But I think I'm ready to find a different pub for this annual adventure. The food is just not good. I ordered the fried chicken. While it was filling, it was also salty and greasy. The mashed potatoes were fine. The broccoli was soft. The other veggies were fine. My friend got the steak and it was quite good. The brussels sprouts were cooked right but they were salted heavily. My observation about the steak was that it was expensive for what it was. Bottom line: Crogan's reminds me of a cross between a Morrison's Cafeteria and an airport Cheers. I'd recommend going to Barclay's for your pub food, but that's unfortunately not an option anymore. All this said, I'll probably end up here again in a year. Hopefully things will swing around in the kitchen by then. read more

Excellent service, food and atmosphere. The ownership change a few years ago really improved many aspects. Glad the menu was updated. Dined here three times since December and had one to-go order. The table bread is great. I've never had any issues. It's a great go-to place that has I prefer the dining room for meals over the bar. There are very few decent, affordable and good places to eat in Montclair. Well, really just one, Crogans. Groupon got me in the door. I was a little skeptical, as I started to put together many places on Groupon suck and are offering the deal as a last ditch effort. However, I was wildly impressed with Crogans. I am new to the East side of the Bay, and still exploring all that Oakland has to offer. This was my first experience in Montclair and it is a really charming cutsey part of Oak. Probably really expensive to live in, but great to dine in. We went around 6pm on a Sunday and it was quiet except for a few old timers getting in that early din. You have the option to sit in the sports bar area or the white table cloth area. We chose white table cloth, even though the sports bar looked really nice too. The hostess seated in a HUGE comfy booth. This right here already gave Crogans many points. We were seated by the kitchen which was mostly open and it was clear between the cooks, servers, runners, this place was working really hard to ensure their patrons enjoyed themselves. Our waiter was enthusiastic and attentive. Their menu is extensive and has all the crowd pleasers I grew up on and reminded me of a place you would go to as a kid for a nice family dinner. Bubba had a hankering for french onion soup and was very happy with the cheesy goodness of it. I went for the roasted chicken. The waiter thoughtfully informed me that it takes about 20 minutes to prepare, and I appreciated that so I wouldnt get all butthurt and angry when it was taking a while. The chicken was worth the wait. It is freakin delicious and the best roasted chicken I have had in awhile. It came with mac and cheese which bubba liked and veggies. A great dish and I will be back for it. Bubba got the rib eye which was also really good. By the time we were leaving the place was pretty full and doing a great business. Our first visit here was not the best. The owner contacted us promptly after our first review and asked to make it right. We came in today for dinner and we're blown away with amazing food and service. We were treated to high class service and food. My wife had the ribeye which was tender and flavorful, I enjoyed the half rack of ribs that was piled high and the meat fell right off the bone. My son had the chicken which he claims was amazing, and my father had the Fish and chips which was great. We finished our meal with an amazing Sunday. Based on my Saturday afternoon lunch experience in the bar area, this must be the checklist for the Crogan's crew : 1) Make sure microwave is functioning (or we might as well shut down the kitchen) 2) Decide on the soup of the day and open the can 3) Remove the lettuce from the plastic bag and leave it on the counter-top so it becomes room temperature and wilted 4) Open the 5 gallon container of salad dressing (don't worry about leaving it out since it's mostly soybean oil and high fructose corn syrup anyway) 5) Embrace your "I don't want to be here" attitude 6) Mark up the prices to ridiculous proportions because most of the tipsy sports fans that come to watch the game won't even notice There were 4 of us and we all had something different. The only tasty dish was the beef dip sandwich, but at $14.95, it was too pricey for a roast beef sammy. I think people go here because as far as I know, it's the only sports bar in town. Crogan's used to be an East Bay tradition, but ... Their new staff is terrible and clearly untrained. They lack manners, they are discourteous and forget watching sports games there. The staff didn't know how to operate the machinery and thus the first quarter got lost. Since Francisco is not there any more the place took a turn for the worse. The new "manager" will allow staff to take reservations only to tell the patrons that due to supposed company rules - and some nebulous person called Mike - they can't honor the reservations. The new bar lady, who looked positively underage , tried to do us a favor and told us we are better of to find a different place. Shawn you need to pay more attention as to what is going on.
