My go to food is: esquite (corn with crab and lemon mix), pork belly bao taco! Any taco when its on the menu. Steak is yummy and if the pork chop is on the menu, try it! There burgers are good and big and cooked good with flavor. My 5 year old son always gets a plain burger with cheese and fries and or the calamari, sweet potato tater tots. Highly recommend. My new favorite restaurant! Chef Tony and his staff kick ass! My husband and I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time and we finally went. We ordered the petite platter that came with a medley of fresh seafood - Shrimp cocktail; ahi tuna ceviche and oysters, all accompanied with sauces, dips and lemon wedges to enhance the tasting experience. Delicious! We also ordered some bevies to relax and unwind. I ordered the mojito. I was a little sad that there wasn't any muddled mint in it but the drink itself was very tasty and different. I also ordered roasted Brussels sprouts and that was a large portion in itself. We ordered our entrees and I ordered the wagyu steak, medium and my husband ordered the shrimp & crab pasta. We both loved our dishes. I cannot explain the wonderful complex array of flavors. They were sooooo delicious and almost intoxicating if there is such a thing. Euphoric. I never use that word. Lol! Absolutely LOVE coming here. It really is a hidden gem in Whittier. We suggest eating here to anyone who will listen and we always bring people who are visiting us to eat here. Love that the menu has new options often and you can tell they have been curated with the utmost care and love. It's a plus that they usually have Russian River beers on tap! Buyer Beware. As an oyster lover, I tried this restaurant for the first time this weekend. I tried the Kusshi oysters based on the menu pricing of $28.00 plus $2.00 for Kusshi. What they don't tell you is that $2 is per oyster. So if you order a dozen, the $28.00 order is now $52.00. Why don't they just show the correct pricing instead of gougin the customer on the way out the door. Their transparency is appalling. Won't get fooled again! read more

Very disappointed with our most recent visit here on St. Patrick's Day. It's unfortunate because the food is amazing, but the customer service from the wait staff is always off. First off the servers always look as though they hate their jobs. They don't smile they don't welcome you as you enter no acknowledgment nothing just a how many and they seat you that's it. Yesterday when entering the restaurant and waiting by the "please wait to be seated" sign I walked in a bit further to see if anyone would notice me and at least nod to let me know they would get to me. Nothing, the server literally walked around me and my son to serve a table a bottle of wine. I would have been totally fine with give me a second, I'll be right with you, or even a nod just something to let me know that they are going to help me! I went to the bathroom and when I came out my husband and kids were still standing around now closer to the bar and no one had even acknowledged him at all. I walked up to the bar finally to get some attention and the staff still just walked back and forth and said nothing to us! If you are parents with young kids, you can understand the anxiety that comes with eating out with them because you're worried about what other people around you are thinking and trying to keep the kids entertained while enjoying an evening with good food and atmosphere. We really don't get out that much but when we do CGK was one of the places we would spend our money because it is pricey but you pay for what you get and here you get good food. It was my husbands birthday, of course on St. Patrick's Day but we still attempted to enjoy a good dinner. I literally wanted to cry when I finally got someone's attention after being ignored for like 5 minutes. The waiter stated that they had 2 tables and that they were both high. So our kids would not be able to sit. Why when you clearly see we have 2 kids would you offer us high tables and then say that the short table is reserved for someone else. He didn't even offer us a wait time he just said sorry that's all I got, so you guys can take it or leave. That's honestly how it came off. After this experience we will no longer patron this establishment, maybe in a few years we will come back when they get better customer service standards and wait staff. Ended up going to dinner in Uptown where we were seated at a high booth and the servers took 2 high chairs one on top of the other to allow my daughter to sit comfortably while we all ate. Totally different customer service experience. Maybe they can learn something from other local restaurant owners about customer service and just over caring and kindness in general. I apologize for the long post, but I have always felt a type of way about the servers here and yesterday on my husbands birthday was the last straw. What a shame. . read more

On this day I enjoyed these lite but fulfilling shrimp tacos, my son had a succulent steak that's so tasty and tender you'll not want to ruin it with steak sauce; my granddaughter had a burger that I regret not ordering every time. We came for dinner Thursday, 9-29-22 and had a excellent dinner & service from Ernesto. We had 1/2 dozen oysters which were excellent. I had the Russian River Pliny which was fresh and tasteful. The Octoberfest pretzel, Chefs Special Japanese Pumpkin Salad, Tuna Poke Tostada, and Fish & Chips. Everything was on point, Chef/Owner Tony, as always was running the kitchen and making sure everything came out fantastic. No one should complain about prices when it comes to seafood, it is a very difficult product to anticipate pricing, especially for a small restaurant like Crooked Gaff, but the Gaff does a terrific job in providing quality seafood (and meat) to our Great City of Whittier! The Oysters were sweet and delicious, the corn was a great appetizer, it was savory and had a strong lime flavor. We also ordered the clam chowder and burger which were also great. The beef patty was full of flavor and the chowder was delicious! I do wish that the texas toast that was served with it was more of a garlic or cheese toast style, but still awesome! The bread pudding was my favorite though. It took about 15 minutes to make fresh (I'm guessing) and it was worth it! It was soft, milky and moist. The strawberries were sweet and the blueberries and ice cream paired perfectly with the bread pudding! Definitely check this place out if you're in the neighborhood. read more

The happy hour prices are more like regular prices. Half a dozen oysters is $25, and the price for a full dozen is $50. How can you consider these prices happy hour? The best oysters I have ever had were at Kings Fishhouse in Long Beach, and their full price was still cheaper than CKGs happy hour. I am going to dream about their shiitake and truffle risotto for long, long time. My husband and I arrived around 4:55 (before they opened at 5) but the waitress graciously met us at the door right away and got us to a table and took our drink order. The black and blue cider on tap was very tasty. They had some wonderful happy hour deals, so we got a dozen oysters and the pork belly bao to start. I'd read about people complaining about long waits for food, and items not arriving all at once (which they disclaim on their menu--items arrive as they are ready) but our appetizers came together, and later both of our entrees came together so I don't know what the fuss was about. Also, everything came at a perfect moderate pace--I hate when restaurants rush and ruin the sense of occasion when dining out! We observed throughout the evening that many diners seemed to be regulars, it really set a warm atmosphere. My one (ONLY) sort-of complaint was that the tres leches bread pudding wasn't what I hoped for. It was a nice, standard custardy bread pudding with ice cream. Call that one and a half leches tops lol Overall we had a magical evening for under $100 (before tip which the friendly and attentive staff more than earned) and will definitely be back to try more. read more

Although we've been to Crooked Gaff several times since I posted my first review nearly two years ago, I wanted to circle back and provide an update. With COVID protocols still lingering, the restaurant has set up a cozy, well lit and warm covered dining section in their dedicated lot. It's perfect for "times like these" (won't you be happy to never hear that phrase again?!). One of the great things about this spot and Chef Tony in particular is that the menu is constantly evolving. While there are mainstay entrees for sure, the exciting parts of Crooked Gaff's menu change every so often. I'm pretty sure I've never had the same thing twice. Let me cut to the chase and say that this place remains a wonderful food option in Whittier. It's just off the center of 'Uptown'. I wish there was a more prominent sign to drive walk-in traffic, but what do I know? The best part of this place remains the craft coming from the kitchen. Chef Tony is the best. The staff remains friendly and helpful. And for what it's worth, they follow Covid protocols to a tee while allowing guests to relax in comfort. This update will focus on two otherwise forgotten sides. Yes, sides. Why? because it illustrates the level of detail and imagination coming from the kitchen. My wife ordered the seared Salmon and I had a two taco plate (it was Tuesday). Mine came with rice and beans. No big deal, right? Wrong. The beans are black beans and they were divine. BACKSTORY: I am from Tampa, where Cuban food reigns supreme. Black beans are a staple and a personal favorite of mine. These black beans were incredible. My wife's meal was served with something called, Forbidden Rice. It was a black rice offering that was off the charts delicious. I sat trying to identify the specific flavors and I'm pretty sure I could only identify one or two. Seriously, this rice is magic - black magic! A strange review update, I know, but there is nothing on Crooked Gaff's menu that isn't worth your time. No matter what you order, try asking for a side of the black beans or the Forbidden Rice. read more

The staff here is absolutely the sweetest group of people I have encountered! The food was very good. I absolutely LOVED the Crispy Poke Taco. I can't describe it but the taste was very fresh! Oysters were very good too. I really liked the Ogopogo beer even though hubby didn't. Their red sangria was super refreshing (I recommend squeezing the lime into it, it gives it a slightly different taste)! We shared the crab and shrimp pasta which was incredible. Hubby had the shrimp Po'boy and he seemed to enjoy it. We ordered a lot of food not realizing the portions were bigger than we thought. Highly recommend it overall! read more
